The Ghosts of the Mountain: Snow Leopards

The first time I heard about a snow leopard was when I read about them in Zoobooks.  I got the whole set of those magazines.  I can’t remember if they had their own issue or it was one for big cats.  All I remember is that they were said to have the greatest long jump of the big cats.  Not sure why that stuck with me for years before I bothered to learn more about them.

Snow leopards are considered vulnerable with there being 4,000-6,500 left in the wild according to the WWF.  As you can expect, they are poached for their beautiful furs, which look better on them than people.  Human activity and climate change is fracturing their habitat as well.  This puts them into conflict with humans and can result in retaliatory killings.  This is when a snow leopard hunts a farmer’s livestock and is hunted down in response.  Humans who do this live in very rural areas, so they only know that a predator is threatening their livelihood.

Education is a big part of protecting the snow leopards here.  Groups have set up pens and protection for livestock in areas that have snow leopards.  While doing this, they try to educate the locals about ways to stop the snow leopards without killing.  This goes alongside breeding and monitoring programs, but the species is still declining due to climate change and dwindling prey numbers.  So, they still have a really big uphill battle even after retaliatory killing and poaching is severely reduced.

So, what are some snow leopard facts?

  • Their fur is thick to help keep them warm.  It can be 5 cm thick on the back and 12 cm thick on the sides.
  • Their long tail helps with balance and can be wrapped around them for added warmth.
  • Snow leopards’ white with black rosettes pattern allows them to perfectly blend into the landscape.  This is why they are called ‘Ghost of the Mountain’.
  • They have short forelegs and long hindlegs to help with swiftly moving along steep cliffs and rocky terrain.
  • They live in elevations around 3,000-4,500 meters.
  • Instead of roaring like other big cats, they have a high-pitched yowling noise.
  • Snow leopards have large, wide paws that act like natural snowshoes.
  • Snow leopards can jump nearly six times their body length.
  • Some have been found to have ranges up to 1,000 square kilometers and can travel around 40 kilometers in one night.
  • They can get to 4 to 5 feet in length with a tail up to 3 feet long.  They can weigh from 60 to 120 pounds.
  • The snow leopard’s wide nose warms air before it reaches the lungs.

Let’s get to some the pictures and videos of these amazing animals.  Found all pictures in a Google Image Search.

Goal Post: Starting to Feel Functionally Human Again

For anyone who paid attention last Saturday, I haven’t been feeling great.  Nothing contagious that means I need to stay home.  For a little over a month, I haven’t been sleeping well and keep waking up around 2 AM having panic attacks.  The stress has been high and life keeps battering me.  So, I’m struggling to get myself back to being a functional human.  Definitely a long path.

This week was rough because it’s the one before midterms.  So, my son has had a ton of work on top of various doctor appointments.  Work has been busy whenever I’m not with life skills.  Juggling all this while trying to heal has been brutal.  It’s forced me to go to bed around 9:30 with the help of Zzzquil, which has been a godsend.  I still wake up around 2 AM, but I’m getting more sleep since I go to bed earlier.  I got an herbal calming pill from Amazon after some research, which I’m trying to add into the routine.  It makes me drowsy, so morning hasn’t worked out.  Zzzquil is at night, which means I don’t need the pill.  I might just take it when needed and eventually move on to Magnesium supplements because my cortisol levels are probably high.  The anxiety is only really bad in the morning, so I’m leaning towards that theory.

Due to appointments, fatigue, and my son having his Winter Concert (he did great), I didn’t get to touch Darwin & the Demon Game until last night.  Didn’t get to set up any April blog posts either.  I’m hoping this weekend lets me finally get across the 1/3 mark on the book.  I’m two chapter sections away from that goal and I’m feeling like I have energy.  For some reason, writing takes a lot out of me, which might be because I get excited during action scenes and that ups my stress levels.  I’m feeling like a talentless hack too, so that isn’t helping me.  Another reason I’m not rushing to find a cover artist since I’m trying to get over that hump.

Last weekend was pretty wild too.  My son had another Bar Mitzvah to attend, which meant Saturday morning trip to the Synagogue.  I always feel uncomfortable because I haven’t really gone to services since I was a teenager.  Still, we made it through and then got home to do homework.  The party was the next day, which was a source of stress.  My son was going and I wasn’t, so he was nervous.  Last time, he only made it 1.5 hours, so we had to create a system to help him relax.  That meant I spent the afternoon texting or waiting for messages, so no writing.  He made it to the end though.  Hopefully, it’s a sign that he can make it through the next party with more ease.

I wish I had more to talk about, but life is pretty routine and busy.  I tried to get extra sleep today after dropping my car off, which is why I’m doing this now.  If I can get the next book section done before lunch then it’ll be a good step.  That’s really it for the weekend since family is coming over again.  Darwin & the Demon Game might be something that I won’t finish until right before the summer.  Oh yeah . . .

Summer is looking like it’s going to be a challenge.  I’m aiming to be working at my school’s summer session.  Unfortunately, my son has aged out of all affordable summer camps.  We’re trying to find something for him, but it might be him staying at home with my parents.  That’s going to be a problem since I don’t want him playing video games all day.  He won’t if I make a deal with him, but I want him to have some experiences this summer.  This has been one of the bigger sources of stress this week and even thinking about it now is making me dizzy.

Next week shouldn’t be too bad.  Monday is a regular day with a really late appointment, but the rest of the week is midterms.  My workdays will be easier to handle and my son doesn’t look like he has any big tests after Tuesday.  That means we can rest up and relax in the evening instead of rushing around.  I promised him a low key weekend next week with Pokemon Legends: Arceus and maybe a streaming movie.  Both of us want some quiet days with no homework and errands.  If the weather is good, we’ll take a small walk at the park and chat a bit.  Gotta get some fresh air.  Big dreams here, but I’m still trying to revive my energy.

I did start a new TV show, which is another anime.  It’s a magical romance/comedy thing called ‘Fruits Basket’.  I watched an older version back in college, which my female friends enjoyed.  Saw a new and longer version on Funimation, so I’m giving it a try.  Not that bad since it has interesting characters.  It’s about a girl who makes friends with a family whose members are cursed to turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac if they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex.  They don’t change as much as I imagined, so it’s really about their lives, relationships, and past.  A relaxing series to watch even though it’s not my usual interest.  Helps keep me calm as I let the Zzzquil kick in and start falling asleep too, so it might be helping.

Goals of the week:

  1. Finish Chapters 5 and 6 of Darwin & the Demon Game.
  2. Help son with homework and studying.
  3. Keep eating fruit.  Why does everyone scream SUGAR at me with this?  I’m not devouring candy.  It’s like every food I eat is going to kill me.  This is why I give up on diets and eating better.
  4. Watch more ‘Fruits Basket’.
  5. Work on a puzzle.
  6. Tinker with ‘Phi Beta Files’ notebook, which I haven’t touched in a year.
  7. April blog posts.
  8. Appointments and errands . . . Boo!
  9. Continue getting decent sleep and working on anxiety.

Writing an Invasion Storyline

Black Clover

My son and I are watching a series called ‘Black Clover’.  It involves magic and the story arcs have been rather simple.  That is until the underlying story hit the gas and an invasion of the kingdom happened.  One bigger than the previous ones.  Multiple characters were possessed by the spirits of murdered elves and united to tear down the kingdom.  We haven’t reached the end yet, so I don’t know what happens.

This got me thinking about invasion storylines.  Specifically, when a story has it happen in the middle of the adventure.  I don’t mean after the first chapter, so the majority of the story takes place during or afterwards.  This is more about invasions that occur after world-building has been accomplished.  Everything is thrown out of whack and chaos rules until some form of order returns.  Maybe the heroes are part of it or they’re trying to accomplish their quest in spite of the mayhem.  Either way, the mid-story invasion is a plot event that can’t be taken lightly.

An invasion changes a lot of what has already been established:

  1. Safe regions are now dangerous.  An active invasion is really a war, so the heroes will find themselves on battlefields.  These can even be in familiar cities and regions.  So, there is a higher sense of danger and being on edge.  The heroes can’t casually walk around and relax due to what is going on around them.
  2. As I said, the danger has increased.  This means there is more tension.  You need to have the invasion deliver an impact.  Heroes need to stumble into conflict either as combatants or witnesses.  The landscape has to change for the worse and their success/survival needs to come into question.  Otherwise, there’s no reason to have the invasion in the first place.
  3. Pacing can be altered as well.  Prior to the invasion, the heroes might feel like they can take their time.  Once the fighting breaks out, they will feel the need to rush, especially if their quest is connected to the invasion.  Putting in casual, restful scenes that show the characters at ease no longer fits the change in tone.  It makes them come off as not taking the kingdom’s or their own situations seriously.
  4. Tone takes a hit as well.  Invasions are scary, brutal, and violent.  This will inevitably reduce the lightheartedness of a story.  Humor may become darker or be eliminated entirely until the event is over.  With all of the tension and fear, it makes little sense to have them be cracking jokes.  The exception is if they do it to remain calm, but having every character become a punster in the face of danger gets silly.  Not everyone has the same emotional defense mechanism.
  5. On a physical level, the entire world will get changed.  Villages can be wiped out and areas can no longer be accessible.  Forests may burn down while rivers are contaminated or diverted.  Famous landmarks could be targeted by invaders to reduce the locals’ morale.  You have to think like an invader and decide what they would do to beat the locals into submission.

Don’t think I have much else to say about this type of storyline.  It doesn’t have to span the entire book, but it needs to make an impact.  I think it works better in a series, which allows an author to shake up what they’ve already created.  Brings the world building back to an earlier level, which means future adventures can start rebuilding.  That comes with a heightened sense of curiosity as fans discover which locations and characters made it through the event.

So, what do other people think of this plot event?  It isn’t that common, so I might be alone on this one.

Poetry Day: Death Throes

Wednesday Addams

(This is based on a real event.  I got really sick and had trouble sleeping because it felt like I was being suffocating by mucous.  Kept jolting awake to handle it, which was ignored by other people.  It left me tired and annoyed that I was suffering and nobody was trying to console or help me.  Believe I spent the night sitting in the bathroom because I couldn’t stand the dark and I routinely had to spit up the gunk.  To further explain, it was a combo of extreme pollen allergies and an upper respiratory infection.  It’s why certain shades of green make me anxious.)

I wake up gasping

Feeling cement within my throat

A gurgling noise

Escapes my mouth

The only sound I make

I thrash upon the bed

Scrambling in panic

I force myself to cough

In hopes of catching breathe

Goo dislodges within my lungs

Then sticks within my throat

Making death come nearer

And through it all

You sleep next to me

Ignorant in your dreams

As I struggle to keep living

The Curious Coffee Cafe

Google Image Search

Welcome to our little coffee shop.  Now, I just opened up and have no idea what I’m doing, especially since I drink tea.  All I know is that a voice told me to open this place and a bunch of coffee trees grew in my backyard.  We can make regular coffee, lattes, espresso, and everything else on that list.  Take a look at the bean list and let me know what you would like.  Feel free to tell me what I’m doing too.

  • Arabica– standard coffee that helps you stay awake.  Grants ability to summon horses until digestion is complete.
  • Robusta– Grants heightened endurance and durability, except in the gastrointestinal arena.
  • Liberica– Grants the ability to shapeshift, but you cannot grow more than a foot larger than your natural height.  NO GODZILLA FORM!
  • Blue Mountain– Turn skin into stone-like armor, but creates mild sadness when in this form.
  • Bourbon–  No powers . . . In fact, I don’t even think this is coffee.  Yeah . . . It’s just booze.
  • Starmaya– Grants the ability to fly up, but you have to let yourself float back down as the coffee goes through your system.
  • Timor– Drinker can turn invisible, but they will lose their sense of sight until they become visible again.
  • Kona– Grants drinker the ability to control the weather.  You will be hated by all meteorologists and sunbathers.
  • Bonifieur– Enhances the strengths of the drinker.  No promises on it being clear what abilities have been enhanced since you might not be aware of your strengths.
  • Geisha– *no longer avoid due to protests*
  • Sidamo– Stretchy fingers that can be controlled regardless of length.
  • Maragogipe– Drinker doubles in size, so best to enjoy outside and while wearing spandex.
  • Pache Colis– Grants ability to sprout ripe fruit from shoulders.  Fruit must be chosen prior to first sip or it will always be durian.

War of Nytefall Paperbacks and eBooks Available!

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

For anyone new to the site, this was my second series.  War of Nytefall involved the unique vampires of Windemere, which are called Dawn Fangs.  An accident caused Clyde to turn from a normal vampire to a sun-immune, incredibly strong, functional heart Dawn Fang.  This prompted a civil war between the traditional vampires, led by Xavier Tempest, and the new species led by Clyde.  Check out one of my favorite teasers below and give the series a look.  Each paperback volume is priced at $12.

*****

Noticing that Clyde is barely moving even with the current, Mab throws a rock and watches it bounce off her friend’s head. He vanishes for a second and reappears next to the startled burglar, who is left wondering if she hit an illusion or not. Watching him move, she cannot shake the feeling that there is a bigger difference in him than she originally thought. A slight flicker of bloodlust repeatedly appears in his eyes, the sensation unlike the usual predatory aura that vampires give off when hungry. There is an eerie grace in Clyde’s steps, but it comes in stutters as if he is restraining himself. His footsteps switch between being silent and thudding, the effect seemingly ignored by the man himself. Mab reaches up to touch her shirt and finds tiny holes from her partner’s fingers, which also pierced her skin. As her friend cuts his hair short enough to tie into a comfortable ponytail, an idea pops into the burglar’s head and she opens her mouth to speak.

“I think I’ll ask you to help with this later because I don’t like it anymore,” Clyde states while holding out his hair. With a shrug, he slashes it off near the base of his skull and lets his remaining hair rise into a slight mess. “A deal is a deal. My plan was to use my execution as a distraction and make off with the Orb of Durag. You must have figured that out and know how everything went wrong. By all rights, I should be dead and I was probably a few seconds away from that fate. Those priests wouldn’t stop even as the ground swallowed us all. Everything is a blur as their magic stopped and I found myself healed. I’ll admit that I didn’t know what was going on at first. There were hundreds of people trapped with me and nobody’s magic worked except for my illusions. It was easy prey and a lot of rationing, but I must have still gone unfed for at least the last twenty years. For some reason, I couldn’t dig my way out without something dragging me back under or the earth collapsing around me. That is until those idiots made such a large hole. After that, I waited until I caught a familiar scent. Didn’t want to come out into a new world without someone I trust by my side.”

“Do you still trust me?” Mab asks with a crooked smile. Pulling out a comb, she beckons for her friend to lean forward and does her best to make him look presentable. “Not to point fingers, but you should have sent me a clear message or contacted Xavier. All of us talk about the old days and how we miss you, but it got too painful for the others to believe you were still alive. It became a distraction and a few of our younger friends got killed because they weren’t paying attention to the present. That’s why I stopped trying to convince the others to follow me. Too many members of our gang died listening to me before I learned my lesson.”

“What happened to Titus?”

“Xavier uses him and the Vengeance Hounds to go after holy threats.”

“And Decker?”

“Switches between training new turns and leading squads in battle.”

“Any word from Chas . . . you know who?”

“I assume she’s off somewhere with her legs wide open.”

“Where is this somewhere since I’m sure you know?”

“She has an establishment on the far side of the kingdom.”

“Is the old man still kicking?”

“Pretty sure that hermit is going to outlive us all.”

Clyde chuckles at the comment and moves away from Mab as his head feels like it is being squeezed. He falls to his knees as the sensation runs down his entire body, the nearby cauldron the only thing preventing him from collapsing into the mud. A banging in his ears causes them to bleed while his chest aches with every shallow breath. Feeling nauseous, Clyde presses on his stomach to help eject a spray of white foam and solid clots. The blast dissolves as soon as it hits the grass, which turns black and rots into the soil. Exhaling slowly, he gradually regains control of his body, but has trouble standing again.

“Let me give you a hand,” Mab says while taking him by the wrist. She immediately jumps back and lets her friend fall to the ground, her eyes wide with fear. “You have a pulse! What is going on here, Clyde? You can’t be human again after what I saw you do, but vampires don’t have heartbeats.”

“This is new to me too, so let’s keep it between us,” Clyde requests as he puts his fingers against his neck. He is about to gesture a spell to cover the unexpected change, but he finds that the trick appears with the merest thought. “Okay, I have it masked and we’ll get it checked out once we can visit Gregorio. I did say that things felt really weird down there, right? Well, I’m saying it now if that counts. Anyway, we don’t want to keep Xavier waiting. He might not be expecting me, but he’ll want to know where you are. I’d rather meet him on friendly terms than running into his men. What’s say we grab a bite and head out?”

Cocking her head to the side, Mab casually reaches out with growing claws and calmly tears open up her friend’s chest in one movement. “Yeah, it’s beating. Looks tasty, which is kind of gross to think about. I mean, I’ve seen vampire hearts before and they’re usually dull red with black veins. This reminds me of the time mine was nearly torn out by that troll and you had to hold it in while fighting since I was dismembered too.”

“Do you mind, Mab?” Clyde asks, smacking her hands away. Pushing his ribs and flesh together, he has his heart quickly pump blood through his veins and heals the wound faster than expected. “Looks like I can produce my own blood too. Probably explains why I haven’t been starving and pouncing on anything edible. That might change after I get more active and maybe this little wrinkle will go away too. We’ll have to stop on the way to Nyte since I need a new shirt now. Did you have to open me like a wardrobe?”

“Sorry, but now we’re even.”
