Peace or Loneliness

Alone
No voices, but my own
The chaos dies
Giving me my time
Thoughts bubble
As my mind churn
Bringing peace

Alone
My voice echoing
Chaos killed by dull
Forcing time upon me
Emotions bubble
Making my heart churn
Bringing loneliness

Alone
What we want
And half us fear
Time with our thoughts
To dwell and sort
Finding oursevles
While feeling lost

Dragon

Smaug from The Hobbit

Red wings

Golden scales

Breath of death

Claws that rend

A gruesome sight

Eating everything it sees

Blackened sky

Caused by the smoke

From deep within

The belly of the beast

It still hungers

Ever lingers

Like a ghost that’s trapped on Earth

The dragon lives forever

This was a simple I did in Israel to prove I was a fantasy author and not just a moody teenager.  I had written a similar poem in high school for a poetry club, which led to my frustration.  At the time, I didn’t like it when people read too far into my poetry.  It was a dragon and nothing more.  Now, I’m over that issue.  Still, it is a dragon and nothing more to me.

The Oldest Man in the Universe by Tuan Ho (Free for 5 Days!)

I recently read The Oldest Man in the Universe by Tuan Ho.  This is a short story available on Amazon Kindle and it is free for the next 5 days.

This is a very quick read, so I can’t go into any plot details.  I’m talking 10-15 minutes, so it’s worth giving a look for free.  Tuan Ho creates a deep world that I would hope gets used in future series.  This story showed his imagination and talent, but there isn’t a lot of meat to it.  One can see so many stories in here that you finish wanting more from him, especially with the twist ending.

One thing that was off-putting is that there are a few gross items mentioned that seem out of place.  This all personal preference and assumption, but it felt like they were added to shock instead of evolve the story.  Also, there are a few areas of extraneous detail that one would mistake for foreshadowing if it was a longer work.  In the shorter work, they are kind of there.

Overall, it was a fun, quick read and introduced me to Tuan Ho’s writing style and world.  I think this is a great showcase and teaser for a bigger story or a series.  So, I hope he puts out more stories from his galaxy.

City Poem: L’Dandrin River

Weaving through Ralian
From Gaia to Freedom
Full of rapids
Rocks
And serenity
Great ships float upon its form
A river deep and long
Few dangers thrive
Upon its shores
Few beasts can break the trees
Yet a hero must be careful
The river is not always kind
Adventure is within its current
For the L’Dandrin River
Is the hero’s trial

What Do You Look For in a Rivalry?

The above might not be the most famous rivalry, but it’s what came to made when I wanted a video about the topic.  Probably because Nyx and Trinity have the same power-level of fights.  At some point, I need to put them in an abandoned city where they can go all out on each other.

The rivalry between Nyx and Trinity has become a big part of the series and some of my favorite scenes to write.  The trick is to not overdo it.  Have a book or two between fights and only make them essential to the plot.  Otherwise, the rivalry gets diluted.  Nobody likes a boring, over-used rivalry.  I always ask how many times can you watch Spider-Man fight Doctor Octopus since both have been around for decades.  It gets tedious because eventually, you need a winner.  That’s something I look for in a rivalry.  An eventual ending because that brings closure and stops the rivalry from becoming stale.

The biggest thing that I look for in a rivalry is realism or as close as one can get.  I want the opponents to be equal in some way, so I don’t know who is going to win.  Even Superman has enemies that can match him or beat him in intelligence.  Superman versus Lex Luthor is brains versus brawn.  You still get a sense of ‘he can win’ from Luthor.  That’s what a rivalry really needs.  The idea that the villain can possibly win brings the threat to the hero and makes their fights much more interesting.

Another important part to a rivalry for me is that there has to be a reason.  Luke and the Hellfire Elf are at odds because the Hellfire Elf was ordered to kill him.  Nyx and Trinity are on opposite sides of a struggle and have found a worthy opponent.  These are simple sparks for a rivalry, but I think simple can work.  Not everyone rivalry has to be about the bad guy killing the good guy’s father after a misunderstanding that led the villain to go into jail where he made a deal with a demon for the power to crush the one he blamed for his life going to hell.  Sometimes two characters simply hate each other.  As long as a reason is given and it makes some sense, I’m good.  One spark that I can never get behind is the ‘I love you so I’m going to kill you’ thing that I’ve seen from time to time.  That comes off as the author wanting to write an angry sex scene.

So, what do you look for in a rivalry?

So You Want to Write Fantasy (A Pessimistic Approach?)

thSo you want to write fantasy.  Well, let me load you up on everything you need to get yourself started.  Have some elves, dragons, dwarves, gnomes, magic, warriors, spellcasters, medieval weaponry, orcs, trolls, griffins, political intrigue, religious intrigue, thieves, and all the other standards you need.

Have all that?  Good.  Now throw and alter as much of that as you want.  Will it cause problems?  Of course it will.  People will tear into you for not respecting what came before you.  Keep all of it?  You can, but people will tear into you for being cliche.  Welcome to the genre, kid.  Each camp of fantasy fan thinks they’re the modern ones.  Kind of funny how they don’t realize they’re all old hat.

What’s the difference you ask?  Popularity, kid.  It’s whatever is popular now.  Give it some years and the other side of the coin will touch the sun.  For now, people think politics and religion are the fresh parts of the genre.  The truth is that those are being spiced up the best.  After all, I remember those types of stories from my youth.  Why not jump on the bandwagon?  Go right ahead.  It depends on what you want to do with your own story because in the end, you have to enjoy what you write.

Let me give you some pointers for both:

  1. Going political?  Remember the whoever starts as king must be killed.  Not too early and not too late.  That way you have an empty thrown with all the established heirs and jackasses killing each other to get it.  Your choice if you want to reveal the winner beforehand.  Who’s the winner?  Typically, the guy that the narrator follows.  You can switch it up by continuously killing all your main characters.  Not a bad thing, but you have to be prepared for fallout.  A fan loses his or her favorite character and you’re going to get hate mail.  Also, you really should have some endgame in mind or else you’ll wake up one day with no clue who should be the new ruler.
  2. What about the evil advisor?  It’s been done to death, but I’m sure it’s still there. Toss a few in and don’t make them look evil.  Only the people reading to see how you screwed up will take offense.  Be adventurous and have him win.  Don’t forget the facial hair too.  Probably go for the gusto and make him religious as well.  Whip up a dark god that used to be worshiped during the ‘bad times’ and have the advisor be one of the secret followers.
  3. Heroes on a quest?  Now you’re going old school and are in for a world of hurt.  Carry around some dice because you’ll be accused of playing too much D&D.  It’s not as much of an insult as they think since D&D is based on Tolkien, whose epic tale is a quest involving good versus evil.  Guess the oldies are respected, but not to be imitated.
  4. What kind of hero?  Well, you can go boyscout and have been complain about the cliche.  You can go anti-hero too, but people will complain about it being a cliche.  In fact, you’ll probably be accused of having a boring hero with no development that is similar to another character.  Expect that for everything you do because people love that accusation.
  5. What kind of monsters?  Let’s skip this question because you’re fucked no matter what you do.
  6. A lot of magic or no magic?  Whatever your heart desires. You’ll get in trouble for it some point.

Why am I talking all doom and gloom?  Because that’s what fantasy writing is these days, kid.  You pour your heart onto the page and enjoy the read.  Just gotta remember that everyone has different tastes and you’re not going to be enjoyable to a lot of people.  If you go against the current trend, you’re fucked.  If you follow the current trend, you’re fucked.  The goal should be to carve out a fanbase and write what you want to write.  Always think of yourself as your #1 fan because if you love what you write, it will show through your words.  The naysayers can suck a troll for all you care.  You’re not going to use trolls?  Your choice, kid.  It’s always your choice.

Character Poem: Gabriel

God of Destiny
Lord of Hell
Master of the black unicorn
Progenitor of the Song Casters
The Tri-God
Gabriel is a god of many names
And a single reputation
Power and coldness
With warmth when he feels need
He is the puppeteer of fate
Forging hero and villain
Leaving room for mortal push
A game of chess
Forever playing against himself

Staring at a Dream Killer

One works so hard
To go for gold
Rising
Above their station
Taking that risk
With sweet rewards
A slower path
Filled with brambles
Every cut well-earned

What happens when it ends?
All work has gone to waste
Devoured
By our albatrosses and ogres
We wonder how they do it
As if they do not care
Leaving pain
And delicious misery
My blood is on their hands

The albatrosses might be worse
At least the ogres do not hide
I would rather noise
And open doubt
Than the one that sinks me
With their own incompetence
Broken deals
Forcing me to turn away
Giving up the path

I see them every day
To take my beatings
Made to feel
Like I’m the fuck up
Perhaps I am
I stay with them
The albatross was mine to choose
While I returned to the ogre
So maybe I’m to blame

I do far too many of these poems, but I need the emotional release before I go back to the novel.  The issue is that promises are being broken around me and they may force me to quit the author game soon after the second book.  I’m trying to find ways around this, but the paths are getting closed off as time progresses.  I’ve done the ‘work and write’ life and it doesn’t happen with my family.  Too much chaos, noise, and selfishness here.  Yes, I know me wanting to be an author at all costs is selfish, but I’ve waited well over a decade to make this move.  I feel I’ve been patient.

I get the feeling that everything in my life is going to be different by the end of the year.  I couldn’t say if it’s good or bad.  I do have a feeling it will be painful because of the way things are going.  So, I do apologize for slipping in poems like this.  I try to be the happy, positive person that everyone seems to want.  Yet, depressed Charles exists inside me and comes to the surface at times.  I haven’t fully killed him off yet.
