Big Sale for War of Nytefall

Charles is holding a big sale for the month of October. This is for his fantasy vampire series, so you can see the Halloween theme behind it all. This is a great opportunity to jump onboard.

Goal Post: Fasting on the Horizon (Don’t Forget ‘War of Nytefall’ Sale)

First, War of Nytefall is on sale for the month of October.  All 3 books have gone down to 99 cents.  If the response is good then I might keep it longer or even make Legends of Windemere 99 cents across the board.  So far, I’ve seen a small blip and I’m not going to do more than mention it on social media.  Pick up copies or mention it to people who are looking for some vampire fun.

This was an odd week because it was a 4-day weekend and then 3 days of work.  So, I spent more time with my son than at school.  The trade-off is that he’s with his mom for the next 2 weekends.  I made sure to do a lot of fun things for him.  I’ll just do the day by day to make things easy:

  • Saturday–  We went to see ‘Abominable’ in theaters.  This was a great movie and I think I prefer Dreamworks animations to all others.  Fun story, memorable characters, great action/effects, and genuine tear-jerking moments.  Nothing feels forced here.  After that, we played Super Smash Brothers Ultimate to relax for the day.
  • Sunday– Went to see ‘Lion King’ on Broadway with my parents.  My son had a blast and this means he’s seen all the Disney shows.  Now, he says he has no reason to go back to Broadway.  We’ll see what happens there.  The show was amazing even though the story didn’t have the same action as ‘Aladdin’ or set pieces as ‘Frozen’.  ‘Lion King’ wins in terms of costumes and the actors including animal actions in their movements.  The lion actors do kind of move like you would expect a lion to.  The combination of puppetry and costumes helped immensely with this.  Seeing the elephant (pretty close, if not exactly, full sized) come up the stairs out of the audience area was surprising.  I knew they were dressed like animals, but this was something else.  My son got a little antsy in the second act because it’s the longest of the 3 plays, but he made it to the end then devoured his dinner when we got back to Long Island.
  • Monday–  This was a resting day because I promised LEGO Harry Potter time.  I needed to do laundry too.  We watched ‘Teen Titans Go to the Movies’, which was okay.  I heard it was better than the episodes, but I guess that isn’t saying much in terms of story and characterization.  At least my son enjoyed it, but he went right back to the more serious original series by dinner time.
  • Tuesday– The last day of the 4-day weekend was at the zoo.  We saw a lot of the animals and even got onto the monorail without having to wait.  Not much else can be said other than it was a fun day.  It left me tired for the work days, but we haven’t been to the zoo since the Spring.

I can’t really say anything about work since I don’t want to share the lives of my students on here.  Next week is Yom Kippur, which is on Wednesday.  That means I’ll be off on that day and not eating.  I think I have another Windemere Monster post ready to go, but I’m going to be a rarity until that evening.  My son is going to be home and he’s hard to keep up with when I’m starving.  Might just toss ‘Symphony of the Night’ into the PS2 and play that.  I don’t have many other games and the Nintendo Switch is my son’s, so I can only do those with him.  I wish I still had ‘Prince of Persia: Sands of Time’, but that went with the ex-wife.  Offered her a trade, but she didn’t agree.  Before anyone suggests it, I’ve tried writing during Yom Kippur and that’s always a mistake.  I’m too used to eating and drinking while working, so it doesn’t work as a distraction.

My plan for this weekend is to do a few more of the Tuesday profiles for Legends of Windemere today.  I will go back to the War of Nytefall: Ravenous outline tonight and tomorrow.  My hope is to finish it up and start writing next weekend.  It’s difficult because I did a 75% rewrite.  A big part is that I gave a character a drug addiction and I’m still not sure how that is going to work out.  In fact, I paused at the point where I had them do something big.  I have a haircut appointment in 30 minutes, so I’ll be thinking about it once I get home.  Once I finish the outline, I plan on either finishing more of the profile posts are tinkering with the fantasy tip book.  Contrary to what I thought, I haven’t had any time during school to look at it.  Weird since I have a free and lunch period, but I socialize at those times.

Goals of the week?

  1. Do more of the Legends of Windemere profiles.
  2. Complete War of Nytefall: Ravenous outline
  3. Yom Kippur survival.
  4. Fantasy tip book tinkering.
  5. Willy Wonka puzzle.
  6. Various appointments.
  7. Probably should do laundry.
  8. Really try to do the biking more often.
  9. Watch more ‘Disenchantment’.  Not bad, but I like ‘Futurama’ more.

Resurrection of Monster Maker Fun 2019: Creatures Donated by The Storyreading Ape and C.S. Boyack #October #monsters

Stein’s Lab in Soul Eater

I know we forgot last year, but the Monster Maker is back for 2019.  Every Friday in October, we’ll see what creatures have been forged with the help of those volunteers who gave me the names.  Enjoy the fun.

The following three creatures have been donated by Chris the Story Reading Ape:

Bantersnipe

These creatures are found in the confectionery forests outside of the village of Cantawolster.  The locals harvest the naturally growing treats for food and selling in the stores, so they are in competition with the Bantersnipes, which only eat things that are high in sugar.  They are large heads with wide eyes and a sack-like body that is really nothing more than a stomach.  With no limbs, they move around using seven prehensile hairs that allow them to swing through the branches.  On the ground, they are helpless against predators, which includes humans who may cut a Bantersnipe open to get at a special candy that is formed in their bodies. This is not a common practice since these creatures have close knit families and will avenge a murdered member by coaxing children into the forest. After feeding a child enough sweets, the Bantersnipes will devour them. This is why humans only harvest ones that they find dead on the ground or use dogs that the beasts don’t realize are working for the village.

Groanyhorn

Thriving in the bowl-shaped hills of Jagarune, these fleet-footed beasts get their name from two things.  One is the flat horn that the females have and the edged one of the males.  The other is the noise them make during mating seasons.  Unlike other antelope where the stags battle, the Groanyhorns have a different ritual that involves the clashing of horns.  Males and females gather to charge each other and the noise made from the edged and flat horns moving against each other is reminiscent of a human groan.  Each sound is slightly different and these animals continue until they find a mate who helps them make the perfect pitch.  Aside from the horns, they are slender with four legs and a spinning tail that helps them get a boost if they try to run up the steeper sections of their environment.

Kaleidopus

As one would expect, this is a very colorful animal, but only when it wants to be.  Hiding in the deepest depths of the ocean, the Kaleidopus spends most of its time gray or black.  It is a crustacean that has no pincers and only three spindly legs to help it move around. A thick slime is on its shell, which is too soft to give it much protection.  Instead, it opens up to reveal a prismatic inside that has absorbed sunlight.  This unleashes a stunning display of colors that will scare away predators and shock prey long enough for them to be swallowed whole.  It is unclear how these deep sea creatures get the sunlight, but scientists have never found an immature specimen.  All that has been found are adults, which is why they believe that juveniles resemble clams or mussels.  They hide among these other animals in the shallows and spend years absorbing enough sunlight before returning to the depths to grow into an adult and breed.

The next three creatures have been donated by C.S. Boyack:

Gullet Snipe

A distant relative of the Bantersnipe, these creatures is allergic to sweet foods and live far away from human civilization.  They can be found in the deepest part of most jungles, but are hard to identify.  Their skin is colored to make them blend perfectly into their surroundings while they move in search of food.  Pictures have shown that it is a pillow-shaped torso with its face on the underbelly.  Being the size of a spider monkey and having extendable hooks at each corner, it can stay still to resemble a seed pod.  Unlike their cousins, the Gullet Snipe is entirely carnivorous, but it does not eat the meat of the animals it attacks.  Instead, it projects a straw-like organ from its mouth that delivers a paralytic.  With its prey stunned, the creature drains the bile and stomach acid. There have been many cases of it leaving enough for its victim to survive, so it is believed a Gullet Snipe might have a collection of animals that it regularly feeds on.

Butterfume

Found on within the rocky land of Marson, this is a fungus that gives off a foul odor to ward off most predators.  To specific species, it has the scent of buttered popcorn that becomes more potent after a rainstorm. It resembles a puddle of yellowish liquid that is sticky if anyone touches it.  The residue that remains on the skin are spores that are dormant and wake up when mixed with water.  They do not leave the skin and will coat the entire body of its host without killing it.  The Butterfume will take control of the other organism and have it travel to what it deems a safe place.  Once there, it sloughs off and pares itself down to a smaller size.  The pieces that are discarded will harden and can be boiled down to make a rich caramel-like coating for ice cream.  Many people in the area believe it is a blessing to be taken over by a Buttefume because of what they can collect afterwards.

Gravedigger

This strange undead creature is not a threat to humans.  It is scary with its hulking form, maggot-infested wounds, and a head that resembles a boulder with eyes.  Carrying a large shovel, it wanders the world following spirits that call out for help.  The problem is that they are either buried in the wrong place or have some other issue with their final resting place.  The Gravedigger has also been known to collect abandoned bodies and bring them to where they want to be laid to rest.  It digs perfect graves and carries a large sack with blank tombstones that he can carve on with his sharp, agile fingers.  If approached by a living human, it will walk away and always manage to be ahead of any pursuers even though it never increases its speed.

Derailing Bedlam: Day of the Landlubbers Part 2 #fiction #adventure

As usual, here is your warning that this story has cursing, sex (not graphic), innuendo, and violence.  It’s my Rated-R action adventure called Derailing Bedlam.  This is the fourth outing (third official) for Cassidy and Lloyd, so feel free to click on one of the two covers to see how it started.  Each one is 99 cents!

“I did? What’s a link?”

“Please excuse Twiggy folks. She doesn’t get out much.”

“Yeah. I wish Mom would let me out right now.”

Windemere Monsters: Oakind #fantasy #adventure

Ent

Here we are with the first of the Windemere monsters.  I think we’ll all recognize these creatures, which I call Oakind.  They are also Ents or Treants, which are the sentient trees found throughout fantasy.  Walking and talking as they travel the wilderness or stay in one place for a long nap.  Now, what did I do different with the Oakind?

Not much on the surface.  I couldn’t change a lot since they were supposed to be giant trees that could move if they felt like it.  If they are standing still or sleeping then they resemble a forest.  Oakind are always in groups, so you rarely run into a solitary one unless they escaped a massacre.  Unlike Treebeard of LOTR (Beat you to it, people!), these monsters aren’t wise protectors of nature.  They can be fairly territorial and simple-minded.  For example, the ones that Sari and Kira Grason ran into in Ritual of the Lost Lamb were upset that they were taking herbs from their branches.  They had a sense of property and didn’t want to give them up.  This resulted in a strange ritual that they had to perform, which brings me to the big and only change I really did.

Sari and Kira are forced to fight each other after drinking a potion, which has them hemorrhage a sweet blood whenever they are struck.  It’s to saturate the ground and give nourishment to the Oakind.  Yeah, these walking trees can get food without this, but they crave the crimson serum of the living.  It’s very much like a vampire and I never made the connection until I wrote War of Nytefall: Loyalty.  In this, Clyde and his friends run into a strange grove of trees in the middle of a desert.  Turns out, these are Oakind that have been turned into vampires, which had been unheard of.  Even though they were destroyed, their seeds were spread and the desire for blood gradually became etched in the DNA of those found on Ralian.  The Oakind of other continents don’t eat this, but they have other names since they are different tree types.

Really wish there was a big story behind their creation.  I simply waited for a point where I could use sentient trees and then ran with it.  My notes were funny though.  I had marked down a ritual that involved fighting, but no reason why the Oakind would care.  It was a final chance to get Sari and Kira to fight, which wasn’t enough.  I had them take a potion on a whim and then . . . blech.  No idea where I was going with it when I started, but that’s how it went.  I’d actually forgotten about it when I had the Oakind return in my vampire series.  Again, I had no notes beyond wanting a strange, big threat for Clyde to be faced with.  Put the forest in the desert and considered having a beast hiding in there, but that didn’t work.  Just had the trees start attacking when the moment was right.  One could say the Dawn Fangs’ confusion at there being vampiric Oakind was genuine because I didn’t expect it either.

#October Sale: War of Nytefall for 99 cents each #vampires #fantasy

War of Nytefall (CLICK ON IMAGE FOR AMAZON SITE)

For the month of October, all three War of Nytefall books will be available for 99 cents each.

I’ll be posting about this once a week and keeping up a pinned Tweet for the entire month, which is really it for promotions.  If anyone wants to host a simple promo post or copy/paste the above then let me know.  I can put some posts together for people, but I really can’t do anything complicated due to time restraints.  We can discuss things in the comments if you want to help.

There’s an ulterior motive here as well, which is why this isn’t working exactly like a big announcement promotion:

If I see enough movement of War of Nytefall with the new price then I will consider dropping all of my books to 99 cents ($2.99 for those Legends of Windemere bundles) for an extended period of time.  So, for all those people who wanted to read my books, but thought $2.99 was too much, this is your chance to sway me into an across the board price drop.  With my job, I can pay my bills, so I’m pushing for exposure on the books instead of royalties.  That means, this is a fairly easy contest for that crowd to win if they convince their friends to join in.

Do I expect there to be a lot of movement?  I have no idea, but October is the best time to promote my vampires.  So, have fun, enjoy the stories, and thank you to anyone who is willing to help spread the word.

A Few Author Myths Debunked (I Hope)

This is coming late because I missed this day on the scheduling.  I think.  Anyway, I had a post I was going to do Sunday that I’ll do now.  It’s kind of a rant, but I’m sure people can relate in some fashion.

One of the most FRUSTRATING things in my life is that people seem to assume they know how I function as an author.  Others believe they know everything about writing even though they don’t do it themselves.  A lot of assumptions are made and this leads to invasions of what little free time I have to do writing.  For example, I get events sprung on me when I get a weekend that my son is with his mother.  People see this time as me being ‘free’ to hang out the whole time, but I see it as potential writing time.  I can try to do both, but everyone pouncing on me destroys the whole thing.  I’ve come to realize that this is because of some myths that they believe about authors.  I’m going to argue against those right now:

Myth: You Can Just Sit and Write Whenever Time Appears

Some authors can do this, but it isn’t as common as one thinks.  Even those who claim to have this power show that they need to be in the right mindset.  You can’t just stumble onto a free hour and dive right in, especially if it’s been a long time since you touched your project.  I’ve found that many who do this end up rewriting or junking what they’ve made during this moment because they rushed.  Better quality is made when an author is able to get in the right mindset and not be thinking that they will be interrupted at any moment.

Myth: An Author Works Alone

This one hurts the most because of who used it a lot.  There is this odd belief that authors don’t need connections beyond those with readers.  Editors, promoters, fellow authors, and publishers are acknowledged as existing, but they aren’t seen as part of the overall process.  The truth is that we need people to help us.  It’s rare when you find an author who can wear all the hats and those tend to have more money or time to do so.

Myth: Promoting is Easy

I don’t even know where to start with this one.  First of all, what works for one author will not always work for another. You have to factor in comfort zones, personal ability, and market saturation.  If everyone is jumping on one promo site then you won’t be able to stand out, but you won’t reach many on a small site where you’re the only face.  It takes a lot of research, trial and error, and creativity.  When you’re run down emotionally, this area will suffer too.  It isn’t like we toss out a promo and the money rolls in.

Myth: Writing Is Not Art

Not even sure how to respond to this one.  It takes time, energy, imagination, and results in the creation of something that will hopefully bring joy.  It’s hard to get attention for writing since it requires more focus and effort to test out than other arts.  One can look at a movie or show with a few seconds to know if it’s good.  Same goes for music and less time for a painting.  We talk about the first line having to hook the reader, which we try our best at, but that isn’t always successful.  I believe that you really need a solid opening chapter to really grab a reader and that requires an artistry of words.

Myth: You Can Always Write When You Retire

First of all, this follows the assumption that one will have the ability to retire or even live to see that day.  Not to mention you can retire then be in such a physical or mental state that it simply isn’t going to happen.  Why do we think artists, especially authors, can simply wait until they shoot for their dreams?  I don’t hear people telling doctors or lawyers to wait until they’re in their 70’s since those professions take a lot of time, energy, and money to achieve as well.  Yes, society doesn’t really take books seriously unless they have a movie or TV show attached.  Yet, they had to be books first . . . I assume.  Hard to tell these days with all the reboots.

Myth: Write What Is Popular and Then Jump to What You Love

Been told this from the beginning and I still think this is a dangerous path.  Trends last only for so long and many of the recent ones revolve around franchises instead of general ideas.  You can’t make a ‘Star Wars’ clone and get the same success as you would have had doing a vampire book during the vampire boom.  You also run into a problem if you’re favored genre isn’t the same as the trend.  If you build yourself up as a romance author when you really want to do Western action then you need to pray that the audience jumps with you.  In reality, they’re romance readers and might be more loyal to the genre than the author.  So, you can end up falling back to square one and all of that previous work went to waste.

Those are the big ones that I can think of.  I’m sure some people will disagree on some of my arguments.  Do you have any author myths to mention and debunk?  I’ll even add them below with a link to your blog.

The Future of Tuesdays and Thursdays

So, I’ve been thinking about what to do with Teaser Tuesdays after the last scheduled one goes up on October 15th.  (It was the 8th, but I pushed back for a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT THIS TUESDAY!)  I considered another poll, but know that I’ll see the same books win that did last time.  Only so many times I can go do Ichabod Brooks teasers before they’re either memorized or I’m forced to put the entire collection up here.  Don’t cheer because I do have bills to pay . . . Not that writing pays any of them these days.  Where was I?  My plan is this:

Next year, I’m going to return to Teaser Tuesday with a section of each book in 2020.  That should give it a break.  Unfortunately, it means I have 11 Tuesdays that I need to fill with something.  More if I come up with something that takes longer, which is what I’ve been toying with.  I’m considering doing character bios and location write ups for both Legends of Windemere and War of Nytefall.  Could be more the former than the latter since the Dawn Fangs are still active.  Odd aside: That series doesn’t sell, but the earlier one does . . . In the UK?  Not that I’m going to kill off the Dawn Fang story since everything is overshadowed by Legends.  Anyway, here is a small list of what I could put in here:

  • Champions: Luke Callindor, Nyx, Sari, Delvin, Timoran, and Dariana
  • Friends: Fizzle, Kira, Selenia, Aedyn, Fritz, Nimby, and Isaiah.
  • Enemies: Trinity, Baron, Stephen, Lich, Hellfire Elf, Vile, and Nyder.
  • Champion Temples
  • Gods: Gabriel, Uli, Zaria, Cessia, etc.
  • Cities: Gaia, Gods’ Voice, Rodillen, etc.

That’s just an overview of the series.  Some of those would be grouped together and others be alone.  (An alternative is also to go back and repost all of the Character Origins from Legends of Windemere to save myself some work and avoid repetition.)  Feel free to give your opinion and suggest something in either series that you are wondering about.  I’m talking more explaining in it instead of how to write, the philosophical side, and other parts of the author side.  This is going to be more world informative than anything else.  (I’m willing to do one or two posts for Ichabod Brooks if people have big questions.)

2020 is going to see a change in Thursdays too.  Derailing Bedlam will be done by the end of the year.  Cassidy and Lloyd are going on the shelf.  That means I have another schedule opening and I was thinking of posting my first 2 books (from high school days) on here.  One was vanity pressed and the other never released.  I’m a little scared about doing this only because they’re really raw and I fear people will think that’s my current style.  I’ll put a disclaimer at the beginning to point out that these are my first works and done before I went to college and worked on my skills.  This could be fun, but I’m nervous about it.

So, this is what’s going on right now for these days.  I’ll have to get working on the Tuesday stuff fast since I only have 2 more Teaser posts to go.  Hope everyone has a fun weekend and I’ll be back to see the comments tonight.

Goal Post: A Short Week of Work and a Long One of Parenting

Let’s hear it for a 4-day weekend!  (ADD-ON:  BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1ST!)

As much as I love my job, I’m happy that I get 4 days with my son.  Going to a movie today, Lion King on Broadway tomorrow, video games, Bronx Zoo, movies at home, and spending quality time together.  We don’t get moments like this as often as we used to and his mother gets most of the 3-day weekends because of timing.  I don’t even know how the extended breaks (Holiday, Winter, and Spring) are going to work because I keep getting heads up about possible trips that she’s going to take with him.  That’s far in the future, so these days are about having fun . . . I’d like to say sleep is on the agenda too, but I’ve already been told that napping isn’t allowed.

This past week was busy and left me more exhausted than I expected.  Part of it came from getting private messages from people asking when I was going to publish again.  This still hits pretty hard because I can’t get that off the ground.  Was thinking of dropping War of Nytefall down to 99 cents for October to see if that helps.  Can’t promote it beyond the blog due to funds, but it might do something.  People want more Legends of Windemere, but there’s nothing else there.  I can’t come up with any prequels that don’t come off as cash grabs.  The finale made it clear that the champions have settled down and the next generation is going to rise up.  I moved on to the vampires to set things up even more for the ‘Age of Heroes’ and thought it would work since people liked Mab when she showed up helping Delvin.  Seems people walked away as soon as I focused completely on the vampires.

Eh, we all know that song and dance.  Work was busy to the point where I didn’t get to touch my pocket notebook.  The program I’m in began the work site experience, which is us going with the students to various businesses.  It’s an amazing program that I was excited to be a part of.  Then I got there and remembered that I had to work too and helped guide whoever I was working with.  Not that I had to do a lot since these kids are great.  Think I was learning more from them this week than the other way around.  The apples I picked last weekend with my son were turned into a cobbler too, which was delicious.  This is why I don’t bring a lunch beyond a yogurt drink that will push me to the end of the day.

Speaking of food, I really need to start snacking healthier.  There’s a large container of pretzels on the counter that I keep digging into because it’s less effort than digging through the fridge for pickles.  We have apples, of course.  Keep telling myself that I’m going to reduce non-seltzer soft drinks too, but I keep failing.  Think I’m going to put the effort in this weekend.  Small steps, so I’ll only get a sandwich from McDonalds or Subway instead of the combo.  This could backfire because I’m running low on seltzer and I don’t plan on shopping again until Friday.  Jumping back a bit, the thing with fruit is that I don’t think I like it when it’s from the super market.  At least with apples, I don’t like the taste when compared to the ones we picked.  I do like pears, so I might have to get some of those or look into places that have fresher produce.  I’m dreaming big here, but I’ve failed to lose weight so often that I think this counts as a delusion.

There isn’t much that I’m planning for next week.  Only three days of work and then my son is with the ex-wife for the weekend.  Co-parenting therapy starts on Thursday too, which will be . . . interesting.  My plan for next weekend is to finish the War of Nytefall: Ravenous outline regardless of people telling me to junk the series and return to Luke Callindor.  If I can do that on Saturday then I can write up the prologue on Sunday to get the ball moving.  A 3 day weekend can net me 2-3 chapters if I only write, so I have a small chance of getting it done in early 2020.  Keep in mind that I’m being optimistic because I’m surrounded by people who have no problem curb stomping my writing time then wondering why I can’t get it done.  Is there a rumor going around that authors can magically create a book in their sleep instead of writing it when awake?

Only other thing I want to mention is that there’s an important post going up tomorrow and it might change my plan for next weekend.  Teaser Tuesday only has 2 more scheduled posts and then I need to figure something else out.  There are suggestions and ideas since I want to give the Teaser concept a break.  It means more prep work for me, but I can use my weeknights to get things set up.  Much of it might be grabbing old posts too, but we’ll talk about it tomorrow.

So, goals of the week?

  1. Fun time with son.
  2. Possibly sleep.
  3. Exercise bike if I can.
  4. Work when 4-day weekend is over.
  5. Stare forlornly at eBook sales . . . or lack thereof.
  6. Do a few more December posts.
  7. Begin getting 2019 Tuesdays set up.
  8. Finish watching ‘Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’.
  9. Respond to comments below.
  10. If possible, work on outline or fantasy tip book idea.
  11. Drop War of Nytefall books to 99 cents.  Maybe.  I don’t know any more.
