 Tis the Day of Pranks
Where nothing is what it seems
Or everything is true
Paranoia settles in
With no escape until the dawn
Traps are lurking
Yet maybe they are not
Is that friend genuine
Or coaxing you into their web?
For one day
Everyone is out to get you
Unless they are not
The real truth is
You will never know

Questions 3: Changed By Fiction

Ayn Rand and Tolkien

Books have power.  Things are as simple as that.  You read a book and it can change you even in a minor way.  Maybe just a smile whenever you think of a favorite scene or a curse when you remember the horrible ending.  Those are rather ‘cosmetic’ compared to a book that makes you see the world differently.  So, let’s get on with the fun:

  1. What book created a positive change or influence on your life and why?
  2. Has a book ever had a negative effect on you that continued after you stopped reading?
  3. Can you think of a story that would benefit from the addition of orcs?

Lisa Burton Radio, now with Goblins

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to today’s edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa Burton, the robot girl. We have a very special guest with us today, Talla the goblin girl.

Today’s show is sponsored by The Goblin Trilogy, by Jaq D. Hawkins. Our Guest, Talla, appears in these stories. Welcome to the show Talla.

“Um, hello.”

“This story takes place after a geological polar shift. This leaves kind of a mess. What can you tell us about it? Listeners want to know what’s lost, and what’s left.”

“What you call a polar shift, we call the Turning, because the planet turns over. Land masses change and high winds destroy much of what is on the surface. The place above the caverns where I live was a great city of humans, now the buildings they made are all damaged, some reduced to rubble. It is a cleansing process, because the technology the…

7 Signs You’ve Gone Too Far With Your Advertising

A big chunk of an indie author’s life is promoting their books.  Whether it’s available or about to come out, you need to spread the word.  Yet, sometimes an author might go too far and things begin to unravel.  At least mentally.

  1. Your dreams appear in Twitter form and you are being chased by hashtags.  Trending topics fly through the background, most of them either politics or celebrity gossip.  The plus side is that you no longer have that nightmare about winning a badminton tournament and realize you’re naked.
  2. You proudly declare that you made 14 tweets, 3 Facebook promos, 1 blog post, 4 Google+ promos, 2 author interviews, and 10 guest posts before lunch.  Thankfully this declaration was on-line.  That way nobody knows you failed to shower, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, get dressed, let the dog out, pack a lunch for the kids, get them to the bus, and have invested heavily in adult diapers.  Still, each tweet has 4 retweets, so you’re sure it was worth it.
  3. Your next book is 90% catchy phrases that can be used as promo quotes.  The story line is in ruins because every sentence is no longer than 140 characters and you’re pretty sure the characters no longer have personalities.  Still, this will make it so much easier to find quotable lines for the marketing campaign.  I mean, who has the time to hunt through their own novel for such things?
  4. You have run out of celebrities to bug on social media for endorsements and send copies of your book to.  Some of them still talk to you, but mostly along the lines of threatening further legal action.  Good news is that you now have the Guinness World Record for most active restraining orders held at one time.
  5. After months of promoting the upcoming release, you are finally ready to show it to the world.  The cover art is praised and desire is running high.  People email you in the hopes of getting an early copy, but you don’t want to risk spoilers being leaked.  One more day and you’ll give everyone what they want.  Except for one problem:  You may have forgotten to write the last of half of the book because you were so busy promoting it.  So that’s why your editor kept asking for the real story before saying you aren’t funny and quitting.
  6. You donated all of the family’s clothes to charity and replaced them with versions that show your book covers and sale links.  Sure, it might have been a bad idea to send a 5-year-old into class with a shirt depicting a terrifying zombie.  Yet, all of those kids will remember the title and spread the word to their therapists for years.  At least that’s what you’re going to tell the Judge looking over the divorce proceedings.
  7. You do this:

Fragile Muse

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Our spirit of inspiration
Gentle pixie on our shoulder
With her ink-stained wings
And body cloaked in paint
Flitting on the edge of thought
Heard just enough to guide our dreams

Her power is at our cores
Dwelling in our mind and heart
She balances upon a scale
Held aloft by our self-worth
Easily tipped to madness
And swallowed by despair

She is a fragile creature
That can break at any moment
Leaving us a twitching husk
Adrift in harsh reality
With no wings to help us soar
No voice to call us home

She cannot die for good
Unless we will it to be so
We can fight to bring her back
Absorb the pain that made her fall
Using it to forge new strength
And revive our fragile muse

(An old poem from my files.)

One Day I’ll Make These Posts about Goals . . . Not Today

Okay, I understand I’ve been turning this into a weekly rant.  This is really the only place I put aside for life stuff, so crap tends to come out.  This week isn’t any different and I’m going to be trying to explain the most recent mess.

My wife does temping and I do writing, which means no health insurance from those.  We have been under a state program since the job loss of 2015.  This isn’t something we’re happy about, but you can’t survive without insurance unless you have enough money to buy a private island.  Yeah, I’m getting bitter.  Anyway, we found out Monday that we’re getting dropped by the end of the month.  There was crying, rage, cursing, and the usual stuff that comes with getting a steel-toed boot to the groin.  We spent the week trying to get our newer information in and begging to be made a priority.  The wife did most of the talking since my job confuses them and it was clear that I was more interested in screaming at people.  This is a time where those automated telemarketers come in oddly handy.  I yelled at ‘Bridget’ for a good five minutes to feel better.

Now the crux of the issue revolves around the kid.  He has a dentist appointment in late April, which is both a cleaning and the start of something harrowing.  Last time, we found out that he had a 25th baby tooth (most people have 24) and the extra was heading in an odd direction.  From the look of the x-ray, it was going up to his eye or something.  We’ll find out more in April, but that tooth has to go no matter what.  That means oral surgery this summer and we really would like insurance to cover some of that.  He’ll have to be put under, which is stressful enough.  Adding the fear that the whole thing will cost an entire college fund doesn’t help.

So, it’s been a really bad week that resulted in me doing more errands and cleaning than writing.  So Ritual of the Lost Lamb is still in the works and should be done at some point next week.  I have 1.5 chapters left and today is out because it’s a zoo day as long as the weather holds.  Tomorrow might allow me to get a little work done.  I won’t be holding my breath since every speck of time seems to call for the universe to bend me over the coals.  There are other headaches going on that are keeping my mood down and not much chance to be free of it.  You can only shrug off so much.

Hoping to see ‘Batman vs Superman’ next weekend since my birthday weekend (April 9th) is busy with appointments.  That and a birthday party for a younger generation of cousin that Aidan is very excited about.  If only they had stuff like bouncy castles for adult parties, which sounded cleaner in my head.

So, what’s the plan for the week?

  1. 2 more days of Aidan’s break.
  2. Finish writing first draft of Ritual of the Lost Lamb
  3. Review outline for Path of the Traitors
  4. Start character designs for Chasing Bedlam.  Yes, I’m going to write the sequel even though the first one is bombing.
  5. Prepare for a special change in April.
  6. Go over the superhero stories because they’re bugging me again.
  7. The usual stuff.
  8. Pray things go smoothly for once, but accept that 2016 is shaping up to be a shit year.

Guest Post: Lisa Burton Talks About Magi-Tech

Today I have a special treat for everyone.  C.S Boyack’s lovely assistant, Lisa Burton, is touring blogs to promote his latest book: The Playground.  She is here to give her opinion on the combination of magic and technology.  As a very advanced robot herself, I’m sure Lisa has some unique insight into this.  Also, I should make another apology for anything Lloyd said when she interviewed him.  Welcome, Lisa.

Hi Charles, thanks for inviting me. Craig said you wanted to know about the mixing of technology and magic in stories.

As a robot girl, I never would have believed it possible, but the more I read the more I come across it. There is a bit of mixing in The Playground too.

This story involves a series of high-tech dolls for children. They contain access to The Playground Network, designed especially for children. These things talk to the kids, and understand just like a real person. You know, high-tech.

There is also a high-tech drug in the story called Microbe-Bots lotion. This lotion is programmable and can target specific amino acids, cancer cells, and other things.

That’s all right in my wheelhouse as a robot. That’s stuff I can get behind. Craig added the netherworld, with an angel of death, ghosts, and a Hoodoo practitioner that does strange things with a human finger.

Somehow, Craig managed to pull it all off and it makes a pretty good story. I think there is no limit for a creative author. If you want to mix technology with magic there’s no reason you can’t. Craig did it once before, in Panama, only that was all steam tech. The trick is to sell it well, and that usually involves research.

Don’t let Craig fool you, I do most of his research. He filters through it for the pieces he likes.

While I’m here, Craig always makes me bring posters to his hosts. This one is me with a dog that plays a prominent role in the story. We were supposed to have a nice hugging pose, but he’s kind of a bad dog.

There is a cherry 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge in the book. I have a swag deal that lets me keep everything I pose with. I didn’t want the stupid dog and sent him back. He would have scared Bunny, my pet rabbit. I would have kept that GTO though.

Thanks, Lisa!

Blurb

The hottest toys of the Christmas Season are the Playground Network dolls. They contain a worldwide social network for children. Except, the network is controlled by a ruthless businessman with dreams of power.

To reach his goals he turns to the occult. Will our children make up his personal army? Could we have an enemy soldier in every home?

Gina Greybill is a cancer survivor who stumbles into her own brush with the paranormal. She wants nothing to do with it, but may be the only one who can bring down the Playground Network. To do it she’ll have to embrace her new situation, and recover the next generation of Playground software.

There is competition for the software in the form of a brutal thug named Clovis. He’s bigger, more ruthless, and more experienced. To top it all off, he has a head start.

The Playground is suitable for more mature readers, due to violence and mature themes.

Third year in a row, I would like to, on this day of my birth, leave you with some poetry to read. Read it out loud and let it echo through whatever  season, time of day or night you are, in hope that all the good lives we are not yet living do not crack our bones with their weight!
