Ye Olde Super Henchman Shoppe

James Bond Henchmen

James Bond Henchmen

Welcome to my store.  So, are you here to recruit or upgrade someone?  Sorry, I have to ask even if you have a minion behind him.  Never know if he’s a bodyguard, chauffeur, or a snack.  Well, put this young man on the table and we’ll make him into your new top agent.  Mind if I ask what happened to your last one?  That’s a shame.  If you managed to keep even a tenth of the body then I could have given you a discounted DNA grafting to this one.

So, what were you thinking with this one?  I have a surplus in magical stones, which might not mix with your tech focus.  That is unless, and hear me out on this, you want to go with Magic-Tech.  It’s one of the latest crazes among young villains because it gives them some of both worlds.  The way it works is that we use the stones as power sources for whatever robotics you put in your new henchman.  Judging by the health and age of this one, you could get away with three stones before the risk of insanity or spontaneous combustion is too much.  You’ll try one?  Okay, we’ll choose that at the end.

Now this is supposed to be imposing figure, which means I’ll put some robotic extensions into the body.  Thinking of adding two feet of height and enhance the muscles so that he can lift a tank.  Very standard along with the usual damage resistant skin and a support pump on the lungs to handle the stress.  Hate to ask this, but did you have anybody bigger to use?  Well it is a tough economy and I can see how recruitment is difficult when you have that corporation convincing everyone to be an indie villain.  You know most of those idiots get themselves killed in the first year or even go hero, which gets them dropped from the program.  Yes, it isn’t a volcano.  I take it you read the fine print of the contract online too.

Let’s get to the fun stuff of weaponry.  I have blades, lasers, explosives, guns, rocket fists, psychic implants, and all the toys you can dream of.  Of course the jet pack and control thrusters are on the list since your enemy can fly.  So that’s a blade on one arm, chest lasers, knee spikes, and a regenerative missile system in the thighs.  That was easy and now we . . . I don’t know about that page.  It’s entirely experimental and it would be wrong to test it without the proper paperwork.

Oh, you have a pen and no concern for this man’s safety?  Excellent.  This is the energy reflection system that is supposed to send all projectiles back at an enemy.  Bullets lose enough power to harmlessly bounce off the reinforced skin.  There is even a side-effect of some energy being absorbed and increasing one’s strength.  I can connect that magic stone to this too, which would give it a little elemental oomph upon its return.  I’m fairly certain that won’t cause any issues.  Though I should warn you that there is a small chance the system will tear a hole in the space time continuum.  Not sure what that means either, but the scientist who made it says such a thing is bad.  I said the same thing to him.  Bad is my business.  Please sign here.

Sacha Black's avatarSacha Black

Who Nominate? This is it. These are your Bloggers Bash Awards.  BIG thank you to everyone who made suggestions. The committee spent an entire evening discussing all of them. Lots of them were similar or connected to each other, so rather than take each one specifically we have tried to incorporate as many as possible under the awards we have chosen.

We have a number of new awards this year, and some changes to the old ones.

For those new to these awards, they are part of the Annual Bloggers Bash. A physical get together in London, England, every summer. This year’s is on June 11th, if you’re interesting in attending then drop us a line on:

Questions 3 (Minus 2): Recruitment Time!

A Sign of Some Kind

A Sign of Some Kind

This one is easy . . . or difficult depending on your mood.  This isn’t even a question, so much as a challenge to have fun with.  On your blog or in the comments, it’s up to you.

  1. Write a Newspaper Want Ad for Henchmen.

Enjoy!

P.S.- For any younger visitors, a newspaper is like the Internet news sites, but they’re thrown at your front door and get ink on your fingers.  You may have seen them lining a bird cage.

We go Spying With Lana, on Lisa Burton Radio

A fun interview with a spy who needs a vacation.

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and we’re having a little difficulty getting through to Hogwarts. Maybe we’ll play some music while we wait. I have a Runaways album that’s pretty awesome.

Wait, we have a caller. “Hello, You’re on the air with Lisa Burton.”

“Hi, this is Lana, calling from an empty warehouse in the middle of nowhere. First time caller, long time listener.”

“Lana, as in Spying with Lana?”

“Alas, yes.”

<Squee> “Spying has to be such a glamorous lifestyle. Beautiful locations, pretty clothes, hanging out with high rollers. Maybe knocking down the casino at Monte Carlo.”

“That’s what they tell me. I’m still waiting for the glamour part to kick in. I wonder if the Agency is giving the glamorous missions to someone else behind my back…..”

“Where are you now, and what’s involved with…

Henchmen vs Minions

Goomba from Super Mario

First, I apparently can’t read a calendar.  The henchman post that went up yesterday was supposed to be today.  So I switched the one that was turning up tomorrow to Friday and now I have a gap.  This topic is being stitched together after a comment brought up ‘Minions’.  It was really about the yellow guys, but it got me thinking about how a minion would differ from a henchman.

The truth is that they have a lot in common.  Both work for a ‘bigger’ villain for one reason or another.  They usually follow orders to various levels of effectiveness.  Minions and henchmen seem to be in endless supply. They get taken out very easily and you rarely know their names.  Both get overlooked fairly often unless they are a specialized henchman like Oddjob.  Those can be considered agents or gimmick henchmen or whatever that puts them above the regular goon.  Yet, it is weird to call a basic thug working for a villain a minion.  The word doesn’t sit as well as henchman when it comes to certain genres.

One big difference is that minions don’t have to be human.  Henchman denotes being some kind of humanoid.  A minion can be summoned monsters, goblins, koopas, enslaved zombies, or even animals.  Part of this is because ‘man’ or ‘men’ is in the other word, so our minds might jump to human.  One thing that comes to mind is the final villain of ‘Castlevania: Lament of Innocence’.  You fight the Grim Reaper and one of his attacks is to yell ‘MINIONS!’, which summons ghostly skulls to attack.  I remember hearing goblins described as minions while elves got the henchmen title.  So there is definitely a physical appearance factor here.

Yet in response to the original comment, I mentioned a second difference that might play a bigger role.  Minions are typically simple creatures that follow orders without question because that is what they do.  There is no sense of autonomy with them because that’s simply not how they were designed.  Many minions aren’t even recruited like a henchman might be.  There’s a mentality of having volunteered and retaining some free will when it comes to henchmen.  A Stormtrooper follows orders because of training, but there is always a chance that they could go against those orders.  You don’t normally get that sense with a minion unless the one in question is being pushed to a different role.  That ability to defy a master is an important factor since it means there is always a chance that a henchman will turn.  Then again, you tend to see a single henchman for just enough time to see them die.

And because people would be upset if I didn’t put them in the post:

7 Signs You Are a Henchman

Stormtroopers

Stormtroopers

Not much of an introduction is needed for this.  The title basically says it all.  Though I will say that it looks like the 2nd Stormtrooper from the left is staring at me.  Creepy.

  1. You are wearing the same thing as the people around you.  The uniform might be tailored to your body, but it’s the same color scheme and accessories.  Not like the people barking orders at you and their unique clothing.  On the plus side, getting laundry mixed up doesn’t cause too much of a problem, especially with socks.
  2. Nearly half of your daily duties involve standing around and pretending to look busy. If you’re on guard duty then you also have to daydream.  Orders say that any loud noises should be either ignored or result in you revealing your position.  No guards are allowed to hide because one guy happened to fall asleep at his post ten years ago and a hero got in faster than expected.
  3. All of your training was done by reading a pamphlet and getting yelled at by somebody in a more colorful uniform.  That person has long since been killed for incompetence, which makes you wonder why he was a trainer.  It does explain why the most common suggestion in firearms training was ‘point the gun at the thing’.
  4. You have a name, but none of your coworkers call you by it.  Everyone uses numbers and you’re pretty sure nobody actually has a designation.  It’s whoever reacts first or the higher ups point at while spouting numbers.  You go along with it and are just waiting for the day your boss realizes how foolish he sounds.  Preferably when somebody else is standing nearby to be punished.
  5. There is no retirement package beyond a promise that you will be taken care of.  It never crossed your mind due to the amazing health and dental plans.  Not to mention all funeral costs are taken care of for you and your family.  They also pay for your uniform, weapons, food, board, and training, so it isn’t like you have to spend your salary.  This job is pretty sweet in that way.  Not to mention Tortellini Tuesday, Casual Under Your Uniform Friday, and Sundae Sunday.
  6. You have a list of names and faces that you have to watch out for if you’re on guard duty.  Orders are to shout at and shoot wildly in their direction, which you guess is because a death on the premises would be annoying paperwork.  Though they are labeled as heroes, which is odd.  Not to mention this James Bond guy has 6 different pictures, so you can’t be certain that HR isn’t messing with you.
  7. This is the 10th time this month you’ve been told to throw a bag full of ground beef into the incinerator.  No idea why somebody keeps putting badges with the letters OSHA on it in there either.

Respect for the Henchmen!

Henchman 21 & 24 from Venture Bros.

Henchman 21 & 24 from Venture Bros.

I’m actually working with a theme this week and that is to honor the unsung villains of fiction.  We wipe out henchmen in video games and watch them getting decimated in movies and TV shows.  When the first part of a trilogy is coming to an end, they’re on the wrong end of the final battle and yet there are always more for the next adventure.  It’s like they’re grown in a lab or the recruiters are amazingly good at their jobs.  Either way, where would a villain be without his henchmen?

First of all, he or she would be doing a lot of their own legwork.  Henchmen maintain the evil base and do all the messy stuff that their superiors are too busy for.  This could include cleaning the lair, weapon maintenance, cooking, and whatever else is needed to make sure HQ is ready for the heroes.  Let’s also remember that henchmen slow the good guys down and give their leader time to pick the right greeting pose.  Imagine if you could just walk in the front door without making a noise.  You could walk in to find your nemesis in the bathroom or slumped in his throne watching reality TV.  Nobody wants to start a fight that way, so you’d have to wait in the hallway for a bit and then the whole thing feels awkward.

Let’s not forget about their importance on the battlefield.  Thanks to waves upon waves of henchmen, the good guys have to use up a lot of their ammunition and energy before reaching the big fight.  It’s all about numbers and these people are invaluable to the villainous strategy of creating an unfair fight.  I mean, why would a villain want to fight a fully stocked and well-rested hero?  So much smarter to put an army of fodder in the way and waste some time.  Besides, you never know when an employee will get a lucky shot in on the good guys.  After all, a Stormtrooper hit Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi.  He probably would have been promoted to special henchman if he survived.

So, what do you think about henchmen?  Do they deserve more than an eventual bullet to the head or fiery demise?
