Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 20

Because I don’t want to leave this unfinished.  We’re back to this unpublished story, which I have nothing else to do with.  Gives me time to figure out a Thursday replacement for when the time comes.

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

“She has been lightly sedated.  You can put her on the bed, Draveon.  What exactly happened when you returned to the shuttle?” asks Cybro while the villains stand in a fancy hotel room.  Adriana is quietly drugged and laying peacefully on the bed while the others watch over her.

“I already told you everything I know.  Hydrana attacked us and the sword of light temporarily blinded me.  When my eyesight returned, Adriana was slipping in and out of consciousness.  She was still trapped in the frozen lake.  Who ate all of the food in the tiny fridge?  Anyway, Adriana mumbled something about the guardian implanting some bad memories into her brain.  She also said that most of the memories were destroyed by her defenses, but the mental fight took a lot out of her.  She barely had enough energy to talk,” explains Tegam.

“This is not a long-term condition.  It is not even a short-term condition.  She should be fine in a few minutes.  Your explanation does tell us why our leader’s mind was attempting to self-destruct.  It would appear that it was the only way to prevent the memory exchange from doing anything to her.  It was a very drastic, but necessary, action.  I just wonder where Adriana learned such a technique.  Mental self-destruction at that magnitude is not one of our powers.  What are you staring at?”

Draveon snaps out of his trance and replies, “Adriana.  She looks so peaceful that it’s very hard to believe what she really is.  If I were seeing her for the first time, I would actually think that Adriana was a sweet, innocent human being.  Instead, of the cunning seductress that wants to rule the universe for eternity.  She’s probably the sanest of us all, yet she acts more evil than all of us.”  Tegam begins chuckling in the corner as he uses his whip to turn a plotted plant into a pile of chocolate bars.

“It is no act.  She was born evil and will always remain evil.  If Adriana had her way, all of us would have been killed and resurrected just so she could enjoy killing us again.  Adriana cares about no one,” retorts Cybro.

“What about her precious daughter?  You’ve witnessed what happens when Kilanus is either hurt or missing.  If given another choice between being good and being evil, I honestly believe she would turn against us.  That makes her even more dangerous to us.  Adriana’s compassion is what helps her lead us, Cybro.  It proves that even the darkest of souls can hold some amount light,” mentions Tegam, whose voice is suddenly deeper than his usual high-pitched tone.

“Amazingly poetic, jester.  Of course, you’re wrong with that thing about me changing sides.  And thank you for saving me,” says Adriana as she tries to sit up in the bed.  Draveon lets her lean on his muscular shoulder like an innocent child until she can stay upright on her own.

“It looks like sleeping beauty awakes without a kiss.  Course I don’t think any of us would volunteer for that job.  Are you feeling better?” whispers Draveon after he tries to hand her a glass of water.  She quickly starts to shy away from the liquid, but her thirst makes it impossible to resist.

“Water is the last thing I want to see right now.  Slight change to our plan.  Tegam and I have to take a trip to Long Island.  There are some more questions that I need answers to.  You two can start causing havoc with the police like we had planned from the beginning.  I don’t want any screw ups, guys.”

“Very well.  But is there anything you know about the Neptune guardian that Tegam couldn’t tell us?” Cybro questions.

“A little.  Hydrana is still out there hunting us and she is getting crazier every hour.  And Fate may be joining her side at any given moment.  She did the same stunt to him that failed on me.  Thank god I’ve been around long enough to build some psychic defenses.  So, try to avoid Fate and Hydrana unless you know for a fact that they are back to normal.”

“Calm down, Adriana.  They are mere children compared to my power.  Why should I be afraid of them?” asks Draveon.

“Why?  Because I said so, you brainless idiot.  Both of them are dangerous enough when they aren’t crazy.  If I find out that one of you took on either of those guardians, and you happen to survive, I will personally put you out of my misery.  The only exception to this rule is if they hit first and you have to fight to survive.”

“But, Adriana . . .”

“No buts, Draveon.  Now, go before I get really nasty and do something that I’ve wanted to do ever since you were created.  Leave!” orders Adriana.  She slides out of bed and grabs her staff before leaving.  Tegam is a few steps behind her before he turns invisible and closes the door.

“Where should we go, Draveon?  She has left all options open for us.  Well, all except the option of destroying Hydrana and Fate.  But the chances of us meeting either of them are near impossible in a city of this size,” says the cyborg, who is on the balcony.  He flies down to the ground while Draveon silently leaps from balcony to balcony with inhuman ease.

“There is one place that I have always wanted to visit.  But there are many children there and I swear that none of them will be hurt.  Or else I will destroy you, robot,” answers Draveon.

“Fine.  They cry too much anyway.  Where are we going?”

“It will a lot be better if I show you.  Come on.”

Canon vs Head Canon

Doctor What?

I’m not talking about the weapon, which is spelled CANNON.  This one is missing an ‘N’ and gets thrown about a lot.  What is it?

Canon–  A list of works connected to an author, world, or character that are established as the ‘real’ continuity.  All others are either their own universe or considered alternate versions of the main timeline.

Keep in mind that this is my own definition that I’ve taken from just how people use it in conversations.  For example, a new story may come out that involves retelling a character’s origin.  People will ask if the original or new version is ‘Canon’.  This means that the audience wonders which version needs to be more acknowledged going forward.  The other one is considered an alternate and may take a few more stories into a side dimension with it.  Of course, the author gets final say here . . . usually.

There’s another type of Canon that one can run into, which is a newer concept even though it’s been around for a long time.  This would be:

Head Canon–  The plot elements, explanations, and interpretations that the audience has created in their own heads.  There can be evidence of these being possibilities, but these pieces are not stated by the author.

As you can tell, this involves your fan theories and explanations.  Leaving an ambiguous ending or letting readers come up with their own reasons for something happening will result in this.  Authors do this to stir conversation and mystery, which helps draw in readers and convince people to read the books again.  It also causes Head Canons to emerge and get spread throughout the Internet, but that’s definitely a part of the conversation.

Is Head Canon a bad thing?  Not really.  It’s fun to come up with these scenarios, but it can go dark.  Some people will cling to their Head Canon so much that they refuse to believe anything else, including the author.  They like what they came up with because it implants a piece of themselves into a world they love.  Now, they’ve added to the creation and those pieces being disproved can hurt.  It’s not that different than an author getting a bad review, which is odd since a jilted Head Canon person may leave one of those if they’re upset enough.

There are times when an author may read a Head Canon idea and turn it into Canon because they like where it’s going.  It can also be that the audience guessed correctly and what they believed would happen comes true.  This shows that Head Canon can be transformed, but the opposite can’t happen.  You can’t take something that was explained and then turn it into an audience-built theory.  Canon can only fall into alternative history or possible Alternative Canon.  Not sure if there’s a term for it, but the point is that these things are surprisingly fluid.

What do you think about Canon?  Have you ever come up with a Head Canon theory for a story you enjoyed?

What is Plot Armor?

Batman & Darkseid

I was surprised when I ran into people who had never heard of ‘Plot Armor’.  It’s been around for a while and gets tossed about the Internet fairly often.  It shows up a lot when it comes to action adventure, superhero, horror, fantasy, and science fiction stories.  Maybe crime dramas too.  If you haven’t heard of it then you have probably seen it in action without realizing it.  So, what is it?

Plot Armor–  A character, typically main protagonist, is protected from harm and death due to being essential to the plot.  They don’t have any magical items or special skills to avoid these death-defying scenarios.  It’s simply that they’re needed for the story to keep going.

Is this a bad thing?  No because you can destroy a story by wiping out a main character.  If the story is about a hero finding an herb to save their mother then you need to keep them alive to finish that quest.  That is unless the point of the story is that they fail and the author is trying to make a dark point about helping others.  Beyond that, one tends to keep the characters safe instead of offing them on whims.  Well, that’s how it should normally go in my opinion.

Yes, I know there’s a trend of murdering characters like a serial killer and gleefully enjoying the shocking gasps of the audience. Although, even those stories have plot armor characters.  Think of any one of them and you’ll notice that there are a handful of heroes and villains who always seem to survive.  It doesn’t matter if the odds were against them because they get out either on or off page.  This is another aspect of plot armor in which a character in peril will survive regardless of the situation.  If it’s too dire then it happens out of sight with no explanation.

This is what makes plot armor so difficult and gives it a negative context.  Readers and authors look at it as lazy.  Either that you’re too afraid to kill a character or not good enough to come up with a real survival plan.  The hero simply makes it out alive and that’s it.  Both accusations can be unfair though:

  1. First, an author knows if a death will ruin the story while others might not realize the issue.  A reader could have a favorite who isn’t the main one, so they aren’t invested in the one whose existence keeps the story together.  Plot armor is almost necessary here unless you keep the hero out of danger, but then they don’t grow.  So, it becomes a double-edged sword in this scenario.  The events help explain development, but their survival can be seen as stretched.
  2. Second issue is the lack of a real survival plan.  This can be true, but it can also be a misunderstanding, especially if the hero is rescued by a third party.  The author may see this as a great introduction or return of the rescuer while a reader sees it as Deus Ex Machina level plot armor.  The hero should be dead, but this timely interference saved them.  For this, I would recommend being careful with how you get characters out of situations.  Either make them work for survival or foreshadow that they’re about to get help.

Plot armor seems to appear unconsciously.  An author rarely sets out to keep their heroes safe from harm and failure.  Those who do mistake such things for being awesome or think a few ‘arrogant events’ will cover it.  Here is where you can really see the plot armor come about because these heroes tend to be surrounded by other characters who suffer losses and die.  In this way, an author may make up for the inability to punish the hero by overdoing it with the supporting cast.  You really see the plot armor glistening in this scenario, which is why one needs to be more subtle.

Subtlety with plot armor is fairly easy.  The character can survive everything, but they can still suffer failures and fall back a bit.  Scars are acceptable results for mistakes, which makes the hero appear more realistic than a pure ideal.  Failure also means they get to do the very human activity of picking themselves back up and continuing forward.  Plot armor doesn’t have be shining and unblemished.  It can be dented and scuffed by the end of the adventure, which I think would make it more acceptable.

Have you ever heard of plot armor?  What do you think of it?

July 4th Memes: 7 Silly and 1 Serious

Goal Post: First Week of Summer in the Books

You know I’ve had a week if I’m writing this post on Saturday instead of the night before.  I could have done that, but I was tired when I got home yesterday.  Soooo tired.  Summer was supposed to be relaxing and allow me to get my energy back.  I’m the same amount of exhausted as I was when I worked.  So, what happened?

First, the idea that I can sleep in isn’t entirely true.  I spent the entire school year waking up at 4:30/5 AM.  That’s before my alarm, so my body is clearly used to doing it.  Some times I can fall asleep again, but the other times I’m just fidgeting in the bed.  The heat we had for most of the week didn’t help even with the air conditioning.  So, I certainly didn’t catch up on rest.  We’ll see what happens down the road.

I didn’t get any writing done this week.  No editing or outlining either.  The reason is because I had my son the whole time.  A few nights he went to his mom, but I was already drained after a day of adventure.  There were plenty of those:

Sunday–  Father/son trip to the Bronx Zoo.  It was really hot and crowded.  Lots of people without masks, which wouldn’t worry us too much if we didn’t keep seeing people sneeze or cough into the ether.  Guess the whole hygiene thing went away once the mask mandate was lifted.

Monday–  I had the dentist in the morning, but a Mario Lego Set first.  I came back to lunch then Lego DC Super Villains before family came over.  Visited my grandparents’ graves, which we don’t do a lot.  My son spoke of vaguely remembering the area because it’s been a while.  A big accomplishment for him since he doesn’t typically remember these things.

Tuesday–  Walk along an oceanside park with friends and then hanging out in a library when it got too hot.  My son hadn’t seen my friend’s daughter since last summer, so it was great seeing them hang out.  Got to socialize myself too.  Then it was ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’ for lunch followed by another Mario Lego set and then Lego DC Super Villains for a bit.  Way too hot to do more.

Wednesday–  Not much different from before.  Only we played Pokemon Snap like I had promised.  It wasn’t the hottest day, but it kept threatening rain or being too hot. We were tired from the previous days too.  Got a haircut on this day too.

Thursday–  No video games!  Mario Lego Sets were made.  We watched a Hong Kong movie called ‘Dynasty Warriors’ and my son made another drawing.  Slowly getting back into the art, so I might be able to do another of those posts in August.  He starts art camp next week, so we’ll see what he comes back with.  He invited the entire block to his birthday party too.  Eep!

Friday–  Made the last of the Mario Lego Sets.  I’m going to post pictures of them and  video of the whole collection on my Instagram in a bit.  We did video games too, but it was mostly just hanging out because of appointments and being sleepy.  Oh, I had to help my dad move furniture back into the house too.  That took up the morning and we didn’t even finish.  After my son went to his mom, I did errands and got together with high school friends, one of which is visiting from out-of-state.

That brings us to today when I’m going to be heading into NYC soon.  Hanging out with a friend I haven’t seen since before the pandemic.  We have no real plans beyond trying to stay dry and avoiding large, suspicious crowds.  More than likely, I’ll get lost in finding our new meeting place since I can’t hang around Penn Station these days.  One final adventure before I dive into editing War of Nytefall: Anarchy.

Speaking of books, I’m not sure when I’m going to publish again.  Need to make contact with the cover artist for War of Nytefall and see what’s possible.  The series might spill into next year instead of ending in December.  Do I Need to Use a Dragon? is still missing an artist.  With summer camp expenses, I’ve taken another hit that makes this one very difficult.  So, everything is up in the air.  With my son in camp, I’ll be able to get more done.  My hope is to edit the book in a week and then start writing the first ‘Slumberlord’ volume.  I considered tackling Ichabod Brooks instead, but I might start on his second collection if I finish the other book before the end of the summer.   Again, we have an issue with cover art if any of these finish.

Blog-wise, I got everything set up for July and August.  Have a topic list for September too, so I might whittle that one down during when I have only 20-30 minutes.  This would be when my son is taking a shower since it doesn’t give me enough time to write a book section.  Guess I’m going to be busier than I realized during the summer.  Makes all the people suggesting I’m sitting around doing nothing look rather foolish.

Did I watch any TV that wasn’t with my son?  I watched the new episodes of ‘Seven Deadly Sins’.  It was fun, but the show jumps around events a lot.  So, I got a little lost during the moments I turned away from the screen.  Began watching an old anime called ‘Heat Guy J’ and might try ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ after that.  Not sure how much TV time I’ll have now that I’m trying to write a bunch.  Also, there’s plenty of drama continuing to keep me drained.

Goals of the week?

  1. Enjoy NYC trip today.
  2. Start editing War of Nytefall: Anarchy and possibly finish.
  3. Time with son when he’s not in camp.
  4. Rest
  5. Pizza at some point?
  6. Fiddle with another idea?
  7. I got nothing

They shall cross the land
Birthing carnage
That will secure their legend
