Lesser Known Phobias

Yahoo Image Search

Something that is interesting about phobias is that there are maybe hundreds of official names for them.  I will point out here that phobias are not only fear, but can be a sense of strong disgust and aversion.  Most know about claustrophobia, arachnophobia, agoraphobia, and other more common ones.  What about the lesser known ones?  (Some of these seem to be created as cruel joke too.)

  • Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia– Fear of long words
  • Pupaphobia– Fear of dummies, marionettes, and puppets
  • Trypophobia– Fear of clustered holes and circles
  • Pteronophobia– Fear of feathers
  • Arachibutyrophobia– Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth
  • Plutophobia– Fear of money
  • Nomophobia– Fear of being without your cellphone
  • Xanthophobia– Fear of yellow
  • Scopophobia– Fear of staring
  • Coulrophobia– Fear of clowns (Common, but the name doesn’t get used much)
  • Ornithophobia– Fear of birds
  • Batrachophobia– Fear of frogs
  • Thalassophobia– Fear of ocean or deep, dark water
  • Botanophobia– Fear of plants
  • Kosmemophobia– Fear of jewelry
  • Cryophobia– Fear of the cold
  • Thermophobia– Fear of heat
  • Nephophobia– Fear of clouds
  • Basophobia– Fear of falling
  • Somniphobia– Fear of sleeping
  • Pachydermophobia– Fear of elephants
  • Megalophobia– Fear of large objects
  • Microphobia– Fear of small objects
  • Benziphobia– Fear of gasoline
  • Emetophobia– Fear of vomiting
  • Glossophobia– Fear of public speaking

The list can keep going, but I have things to do.  Anybody have any phobias that others might not know about?

Goal Post: A Little Progress And a TON Of Mayhem (Donation Link Too)

The situation I mentioned last Sunday has been growing, so my week came with a lot of stress.  For the sake of those involved, I won’t go into any details in a public forum.  My hope is that things can come to a safe conclusion, but that’s going to take time.  Got a few appointments this week about it, so we’ll see how things go.

The stress did push me to the point where a cold and my allergies knocked me out of commission.  It was so bad that I woke up disoriented and my blood pressure being dangerously high.  So, I took the day off of work to rest and get myself checked out because I didn’t want to miss the rougher days.  I took the opportunity to work a bit on a chapter section of Darwin & the Joy Path.  Had to keep walking away due to fatigue and getting confused.  A bunch of backtracking and rewrites occurred, but I eventually got it to feel right.  That was around the time the medicine finally got everything under control as well.

I hope to finish chapter 5 today since I don’t have much planned beyond a Pokemon outing at 2 PM.  It won’t be long, so I might even start on chapter 6.  That’s a 4-parter though, so I doubt I’ll finish it this weekend.  I’ll have to figure out how to juggle this because it’s an appointment heavy week.  Getting halfway through chapter 6 shouldn’t be too bad, but I might get lucky and pull off 3 on Sunday.  There isn’t much else to do beyond laundry and getting dinner.  Leaving me with a single section that I might be able to work on next weekend when my son does his own thing isn’t bad.

Work is going to be a little easier than this past week, which probably just cursed me.  A week with Monday off (Diwali) and two field trip days should be smooth sailing.  It really depends on the kids though.  I hope this is the case because of all the personal stuff I have to tackle.  Just staring at the calendar is giving me a headache.  Going to need to get extra sleep and pop those Claritin pills to make it through.

The only other thing going on is a fundraiser for my son.  His high school chorus is doing a trip to Disney World where they will get to perform.  There’s also this thing where they sing the songs of a movie as it plays behind them.  After these events, they get to enjoy the parks, but the main thing are the performances.  So, this fundraiser is a simple donation thing where 80% of the money goes to the student.  Before you shriek, the chocolate bar and other fundraisers tend to be 40-60% going to the student.  I don’t understand why, but the higher return is why his school is doing this.  Part of this is him having people use social media to spread the word, so here we are.  I’m attaching the link below for people to click if they wish.  Figure it’s worth a shot:

Donation

With that out of the way, here are the goals of the week:

  1. Help son with fundraiser.
  2. Write more of Darwin & the Joy Path.
  3. Get more sleep.
  4. Appointments.
  5. Pokemon for daily stuff.
  6. Take time to think about personal issue.
  7. Try not to cry.
  8. Try to be more interesting for next week.
  9. Expect to fail at #8.

Ghost Month: Apparitions

Google Image Search

This is a weird one because it feels like apparitions is nothing more than another word for ghosts.  Yet, there is a difference that turns up on occasion.  So, what is an apparition and why is it really different than a ghost?

While a ghost is specifically a spirt of the dead, an apparition can be a person or even an object.  It takes on a solid, clearly identifiable form in an area that was connected to it in ‘life’.  This doesn’t mean the apparition can interact with physical objects, but you know what you’re dealing with.  They tend to be primarily a visible encounter even though some have been connected to cold patches.

The most common and famous example of an apparition, going by the definition, would be a Haunted House.  There are spirits involved in most stories, but there are others where its simply an evil force in the house.  It can bring in other types of ghosts and does gain an ability to interact with people, but it isn’t always connected to a dead person.  At least in many stories.  Fiction seems to always add a spirit in there, so that makes identifying apparitions that aren’t ‘ghosts’ even harder.

Another wrinkle in the apparition is that it can also be used when one sees the astral projection of a living person.  This muddies the water even more since you can’t say ‘every apparition is a ghost, but not every ghost is an apparition’.  I would say that this addition means we’re merely looking at something that manifests to the eye.  It can interact with people or not, but it’s simply a clear visual of something.  There isn’t any mystery to what an apparition is depicting.

So, what would you say to this whole apparition/ghost thing?  Do you think they really should be considered one and the same?

Poetry Day: Skudger

Young Frankenstein

(Yeah . . . I got nothing on this one either.  Maybe the komodo dragon? Only because of the poison then waiting for the prey to drop tactic.)

Dweller in the muck
Deep beneath the waves
The Skudger wanders
Following the warmer tides
Battling eternal chills

It makes a tiny ping
Barely heard by all around
Searching for food and foes
Avoiding all that moves
And feasting on the frozen dead

Shifting colors
Of mottled black and grey
Dance along its scales
They act as first defense
Against all hungry mouths

Danger soon approaches
A starving Long-Toothed Brill
It flaps its fleshy wings
Kicking up a cloud
To mask its toxic spores

The Skudger waits
For its poison to hit home
Its toothless mouth quivering
In anticipation of a meal
That it will hold for days

Ghosts Month: Demonic Entities

Constantine

I can hear the arguments already and I agree.  Demonic entities aren’t really the same thing as ghosts, but they get connected at times.  This could be why certain ghost categories get moved to demons depending on your definition.  So, how are they the same and different?

  1. A big difference is that demons are sentient beings from another world with an evil goal in mind.  They are either from Hell to do Satan’s bidding or summoned from a void or anything else that makes them non-Earth.  Ghosts are spirits of the dead or created by trauma, so their origins are Earth.
  2. There are some beliefs that demons were once humans, which does mean they are related to ghosts in some fashion.  Some even have them once being the ghosts of people who became corrupted by evil or dark emotions.  In this case, a demon would be an intelligent ghost that has lost its humanity and is now out to cause pain, suffering, and destruction.
  3. Stories have both ghosts and demons possessing humans for their own reasons.  A demon would be to continue their evil agenda while a ghost might be doing it to relay a message or find peace.  This shared ability does mean that demons aren’t always corporeal or they at least have the ability to change to a spiritual form.  I have even found a few tales where ghosts and demons possess each other, but those are rare and not consistent.
  4. While ghosts aren’t always aware of their situations, demons are and they have a more active influence on their surroundings.  Of course, you have wraiths, revenants, and other ghosts that have their awareness and can interact.  So, this isn’t a solid difference between the two.
  5. Ghosts are typically linked to a place or person.  Demons are able to roam freely unless specifically contained somehow.  Usually, the containment of a demon involves magic or some kind of relic.  Yet, if a demon did come from a ghost who became corrupted, it would probably still be stuck in its location.  This is where we get conflicting information on the differences.

That’s really it, which makes it fairly straightforward on them being different.  At least, to most people it would look that way.  Going with the ‘demons are corrupted ghosts’ theory, you end up created a solid connection.  This one probably should boil down to personal beliefs.

Teaser Tuesday: The Madman of Nyte

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

(Don’t think I’ve highlighted much of Archillious from War of Nytefall.  His scenes did tend to be hard to share without spoilers or full context.  Hence the length of this one.  Enjoy.)

“You wish to keep your secrets. I understand,” Leo replies as he fixes one of his beard braids. Nodding his head to the bartender, he receives another mug of ale, which is capped with a triangular cover of foam. “The thing is that you remind me of a rumor that I recently heard about in my travels. Almost twenty years ago, there was a man who dressed like a jester and killed many people. There was never any pattern or reason for his slaughters, so he could never be caught. As quickly as he gained infamy, he seemed to disappear from the world. That’s a man I would enjoy meeting because I feel like we could make a deal.”

“Guess his reputation precedes the terrifying Archillious.”

“That was the name.”

“If you are a fan then you would know what my real job was.”

“Former assassin . . . Currently a Dawn Fang.”

“That explains the sun with demon wings on your chest.”

“I would rather not make a scene.”

“I thank you for sharing your hopes and dreams.”

The ominous tone of his voice causes Leo and his followers to tense up, which allows Archillious to identify his enemies. The vampire takes his time finishing his meal and his hunger drives him to lick the bowl clean. Not needing the spoon, he flicks it at the priest and watches it bounce off a protective spell. A worried look is on the bartender’s face when she realizes that a fight is about to break out in her tavern. Feeling sorry for her and having enjoyed the stew, Archillious rummages in his jacket pockets in search of payment. He hears a footstep behind him and whirls around to stab a knife into an approaching elf’s head. The poison on the blade causes the Duragian to stand stiff and await orders, which are for him to repeatedly punch himself in the face until he is dead. Unconcerned with the stampeding crowd, the assassin leaps over the bar and ducks a mace that is swinging at his face. Finding the cowering halfling under the sink, he places a bag of gemstones at her feet before standing up again. The studded weapon is caught in his fist and he takes his time climbing to the dining side of the counter without releasing the struggling mortal. Keeping an eye on Leo, the cautious Dawn Fang cracks the knuckles of his free hand and places it on the face of his victim. The infected mortal breaks into maddening laughter and runs around smashing the furniture with his mace until he abruptly flops onto his side.

“Mortals always seem to rampage for a minute and then their hearts explode whenever I take their sanity,” Archillious complains while smiling. He hears a woman begin to chant a spell, so he casually fires a crossbow bolt over his shoulder and into her throat. “As you can see, the exciting Archillious loves to make a scene. Not sure what you mean by Dawn Fang though. I’m your basic, yet very special, vampire like you would find anywhere. Can’t prove otherwise since it’s night. Now, how about you hand over that holy orb you’re carrying?”

“I forgot that your kind wishes to remain a secret,” Leo replies, his hand shaking as he reaches for his pouch. He yelps when a dart hits his platemail with enough force to knock him onto the floor. “I tried to use you as an argument for your kind’s destruction. If murderers and psychopaths like you are flocking to Clyde and Xavier then it’s only a matter of time before you try to devour us all. My fellow Duragians swore that that Dawn Fangs were chosen by the sun and my attempts to make you public were undone by my superiors. Yet, here I stand with a monster wearing the skin of a man. One that was evil before he got his fangs. The temptation of such power is intoxicating to those who seek destruction, so it should be erased completely from Windemere. Don’t you agree?”

“Actually, I do agree that wanton destruction is what the world needs,” the assassins states, his eyes narrowing into slits. He watches the priest’s hands to make sure he sees the orb, a slight pang of worry squirming in the back of his mind. “The two of us are similar if you look at the basics. You despise my kind and wish to erase us from existence. I find the world boring and want to kill as many people as I can. The only real difference is that you’re more specific in your goals and my dreams are . . . grander. Now, are you going to show me that orb or will I have to dig through your corpse to find it?”

A burly Duragian with glowing gauntlets jumps on Archillious from behind and tries to restrain him. The sun spells have no effect on the Dawn Fang, who lets the mortal enjoy a few seconds of struggling before turning around. His fangs sink into the man’s neck, but he gags at the blood’s sour taste. Swiftly tearing out the Duragian’s throat, the assassins spits the disgusting ichor into his hand. He chuckles at the sight of red foam and realizes that his enemies have a mild poison coursing through their veins. With a curious sniff, Archillious can tell that it was designed for old-world vampires and that it will do nothing more than give him a week of indigestion. Insulted by the mediocre toxin, he sends a jet of pink liquid out of his right sleeve and into the face of a gnome, who has been waiting for an opening to attack. The razor-sharp discs fall from her hand as she staggers back and screams at how the very air feels like sandpaper against her skin. An itchiness covers her body and she scratches at the sensation until she is ripping into her own flesh for any flicker of relief. Another Duragian rushes across the tavern while casting a healing spell, but is shot in the thigh by Archillious. The poisonous bolt causes him to lose control of every muscle in his body and he collapses in a heap, his glazed eyes staring lifelessly at the ceiling.

It is a faint hum that gives Archillious enough of a warning that he is able to leap away from the Fist of Durag’s blast. Even though he is grinning wide, the Dawn Fang is aware that he narrowly avoided getting killed. Facing Leo, he tries to guess what the dwarf is going to do with the orb that he is holding in his fist. The artifact glows, but the assassin refuses to move until he knows the direction of the attack. Becoming impatient, a purple fog seeps out of his pores to create a toxic curtain that obscures him from view. Archillious crouches low and is about to rush forward when a wide beam of sunlight cuts through his poison. Every deadly wisp is erased from the purified air, which smells like cherries and vanilla. Having not heard the same noise that preceded the first blast, the Dawn Fang feels less confident about his chances of victory. He licks at his fangs and considers spitting one at the dwarf, but knows it will be countered by the Fist of Durag.

The sudden thought of a room-sized wave being emitted from the orb causes Archillious’s mouth to go dry and he tries to judge the distance to the door. A crackle of energy down Leo’s arm galvanizes the vampire into action, the unexpected sprint helping him avoid a sloppy blast that is a few inches too high. Not trusting any of the furniture to act as shields, he continues running and dodging the beams. Several times, the assassin leaps backwards and runs to the side to prevent the priest from getting an idea of his path. It does not take long for Archillious to realize that he will be struck and depowered the instant he reaches the closed door. With no windows to leap through, he sighs and spins on his toes to run in the opposite direction of the only exit. Having been focused on the obvious escape path, Leo is too slow to stop him from barreling through the back wall of the tavern. A series of rapidly fired blasts follows the retreating assassin, but they sail harmlessly into the distance.

“Better luck next-” Archillious begins to say. His word are cut off when the building is destroyed by a giant orb that mimics the sun and sits in Leo’s palm. “That really does give off a lot of heat. Guessing that isn’t going to take away my powers. No, you’re out to kill and don’t care if you hurt others as long as I die. My kind really are nothing more than monsters in your eyes.”

“May your soul be cleansed by the Fist of Durag and enter his embrace,” the priest whispers as he leans back to throw the powerful spell.

Ghost Month: Shadow People

Shadow People

These are pretty self-explanatory.  A shadow person is a type of ghost that is nothing more than a dark silhouette or blob.  They are typically seen through peripheral vision, but people have claimed to spot them from a distance.  They are usually observing people or slowly following without getting too close.  A few stories claim they have glowing eyes while others give them no features.  They even appear in some religious folklore where they are considered shades from the underworld.

Now, there is one recurring shadow person called “Hat Man”.  This is a shadowy ghost that looks like all other accounts, but he wears a brimmed hat.  He has been associated with sleep paralysis and the overuse of Benadryl.  This entity began getting mentioned on the Internet in the early 2000’s and this increased the sightings of general shadow people.  I would keep in mind that they have existed in folklore for centuries, but they achieved a modern push due to “Hat Man”.  There is also a high chance that people seeing the attention the stories got then claimed to have seen it themselves.

The connection to a drug is why people look at the shadow people for an explanation of ghosts in general.  Humans need a solid, tangible explanation, which spirits of the dead doesn’t accomplish.  So, the idea that taking a drug and seeing a shadowy figure under sleep paralysis gives an explanation.  It doesn’t help that they are typically seen briefly through peripheral vision, so people are never 100% sure of what they see.  Has all the hallmarks of psychological trickery induced by heightened emotions, exhaustion, and/or medication.

Even with all of the doubt, there could be some truth to a shadowy ghost.  Just like how the ladies come in different colors, it could be that there are ghosts that don’t glow in the dark.  They absorb light and stick to the darkness.  Though, they could be considered demons as well . . . That’s another post.
