Inanimate Objects with Personality

The Going Merry from One Piece

I was going to do a ‘Ye Olde Boat Shoppe’ until my son and I reached a specific episode of the anime called ‘One Piece’.  I’d already chosen the Going Merry picture, but this episode focused on her.  If anyone has watched the anime or read the manga, you might know what part I’m talking about.  (No spoilers in comments!) This spot really brought out how the ship was a character alongside the human (and Reindeer) ones.  This got me thinking about how inanimate objects can have personality in fiction.

This goes beyond the literary tool of personification.  That’s when you connect a human trait to an inanimate object, but it’s kind of brief.  This is taking a long-term object and making people feel for it.  Not easy and many times it’s done by accident.  Yes, personification does play a role, but I would say that this is the next level.  Maybe you start with that, but then it evolves to something more.  This item now has a presence in any scene that it’s shown in.  Not enough to steal the scene, but the audience will know it’s there and care about its fate.

What are some trends with this concept?

  1. Typically, this is done with constantly used items such as transportation, weapons, and other pieces of gear.  It can be something small, but it’s usually something big with a common use.  This way, the object can be included in events more often than one with a narrow focus.  For example, a warrior’s sword will have a better chance of this happening than a favorite whetstone.  The audience is going to see the former in action and with more focus than the latter.
  2. There may be a backstory to the item like it belonging to someone important prior to the current owner.  It could have been a gift, which creates a scene that establishes its emotional connection.  Another option is it being a family heirloom and having it involved in events from the beginning.  This type of item doesn’t even need a use so much as a presence.
  3. These items tend to get named as well, which helps to bring attention to it.  A reader will differentiate this one item from others of its kind.  For example, the Going Merry is specifically the boat of the Strawhat Pirates.  It does have a unique aspects such as the figurehead, flag, and tangerine trees.  Yet, it’s still a ship and giving it a name makes it stand out.  You can have an entire fleet of ships that are each different in appearance, but the Going Merry will stand out if it’s the only one with a name.

One of the reasons this is done is to create an emotional bridge if the object is broken or lost.  The owner is going to be upset for obvious reasons.  By giving the object a personality and/or presence, the author can make the audience feel the same way.  Not to the same extent, but enough that the event has more impact.  Clearly, this is easier with living things because we naturally feel bad when something dies.  If we’re talking about something that was never alive to begin with then it’s harder to create that gut punch without getting the audience to care.

So, what do you think about this?  Ever have an inanimate object that people really cared about in the books you read or wrote?

Calendar and Holidays of Windemere

LOTR

Originally, I was going to make a 7 tips list for designing holidays in fantasy worlds.  Then, I realized I never really used them in my stories.  Part of the reason is that I always forget to keep track of Windemere’s calendar beyond the seasons.  I may have mentioned a few months here and there, but it slips my mind.  Shame since I spent a weekend in college coming up with this thing.  Yeah, I’m a hack.  Then again, I don’t hear months get mentioned much in real life unless it deals with deadlines.  Adventurers are going to be more concerned with seasons.  Anyway, here’s what I created and may use in the future or add to.  After all, I made this before I added Calicos, Chaos Elves, and Fireskins to the primary race list.  Barbarians too.

Windemere Calendar

Month                                     Days                            Season

Aberdon                                  34                                Tavon’s Touch

Dandor                                   30                                Tavon’s Touch

Morgrid                                  32                                Canst’s Blood

Kruma                                     31                                Canst’s Blood

Hanjur                                     31                                Canst’s Blood/Vir’s Curse

Jeldon                                     42                                Vir’s Curse

Flaxen                                     25                                Vir’s Curse/Ult’s Breathe

Juniper                                    32                                Ult’s Breathe

Xoren                                      30                                Ult’s Breathe

Leryna                                     29                                Ult’s Breathe/Tavon’s Touch

Holidays (With Some Notes)

Human:

  • New Year- Aberdon 1st
  • Feast of Canst (Harvest Time)- Xoren 28th
    • Not sure this works since I made different harvest times around Windemere.
  • Birth of Humanity (Day they believe they were made)- Jeldon 37th
  • Alliance of the Three (Dwarf/Elf/Human pact made)- Hanjur 13th
    • This one no longer makes sense since Elves have no central kingdom.
  • Trade Pact Celebration (Halfling/Gnome/Human pact made)- Leryna 9th
  • Winter Solstice- Leryna 28th
    • This one seems so normal compared to the other holidays.

Elves:

  • New Year- Morgrid 15th
  • Reckoning Fast (fasting days of apology for violence)- Aberdon 12th-14th
  • Summer Solstice- Hanjur 19th
  • Noble Games (choosing of royal members)- varies
    • But . . . why?
  • Dragon Tribute (celebrate spring and dragons)- Morgrid 32nd
    • This one really should be a Fireskin one.
  • Birthday of Jora Dasti (savior of the elves)- Jeldon 35th
    • This one is news to me.
  • Feast of the Bow (archery tribute)- Kruma 10th

Dwarves:

  • New Year- Flaxen 1st
  • Thanksday (time of ale maturation)- Dandor 17th
  • Day of the Stone (origin celebration)- Flaxen 15th
  • Smith’s Day- Leryna 20th
    • Definitely not being original here
  • Aphrodite’s Night- Morgrid 14th
    • First, why is Aphrodite here since that’s not a Windemere deity?  Second, why did I put the orgy holiday with the dwarves?
Third, I had to have been drinking at this point.

Halflings:

  • New Year- Aberdon 1st
  • Neberith’s Birth (origin of their favored god)- Kruma 11th
  • Ocean Tribute-Xoren 23rd
  • Feast of Home- Morgrid 1st
    • The first list that makes sense!

Gnomes:

  • New Year- Leryna 29th
  • Feast of Knowledge- every 15th of the month
  • Invention Convention- Hanjur 16th
    • Must have sobered up at this point.

Orc:

  • Revival Day– Dandor 3rd
  • The Dragon Feast–  Flaxen 23rd
    • Again with the dragons?
  • Death March (yearly marathon)- Jeldon 21st
    • I so need to add this to a book!

Shared Holidays:

  • Day of Darkness- all moons cover sun for 24 hours; does not fall under any months
    • The only holiday I every remember because it has its own zodiac sign.
  • Merging of the Deities (all pantheons joined)- Aberdon 13th

Post-Birthday Goal Post

As if my brain needs any other reasons to be confused, I’m doing a goal post on Sunday instead of Saturday.  This is because yesterday was my birthday.  Think it was 42, but I’ve had trouble remembering ever since Covid erased my 40th birthday plans from the face of existence.  Seriously, the elimination of a milestone ‘not dead yet’ day really mucked with my sense of time.  Heck, I actually didn’t realize I was on my birthday last year until the first Facebook message.  Probably should worry more about this mental decline than I really am.

Nah, I’m still recovering from going out last night.  It wasn’t drinking that got me since I only had 2 Hennessy-based cocktails over the course of the night.  It was the hot wings that may have gotten to me and caused some really bizarre dreams.  Also a state of being pseudo-awake or pseudo-asleep.  Thankfully, I have no plans today other than this post, hydrating, maybe biking, and starting a new anime once I watch the last episode of this other one that I’m not that into.  Having a low key day is just what I needed after the previous week.

Last week was . . . I really think I’m going to be dragging myself into the summer at this point.  Work was fine if not a little busy at first, but that’s par for the course.  The mayhem came from the home stuff.  It was the last week of a tumultuous third quarter for my son, so we had tests and projects all over the place.  On top of this, he surprised me with a change in the days and time of a club he’s in.  So, the schedule is off and will remain so until the end of May.  Means a lot of juggling and working hard at night.  Even my birthday required some homework time after we saw ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’.  I’m just really hoping we can pull this whole thing off and go right into enjoying our Spring Break.

On the plus side, I finished the posts for July.  I’m going to start in on August this week on my continued quest to prep my blog in a way that I only have to worry about the weekends and can focus on writing during the summer.  Given everything that’s going on, I probably won’t be able to return to Darwin’s adventure until Memorial Day Weekend.  Most of the big events should be done by then.  So, I might prepare September too since writing time might not be a thing once the next school year starts.  It might seem silly to people for me to do this, but it puts my mind at ease.

Spring Break is going to be busier than expected.  It starts with Passover, which means cleaning and family.  Later on, my son and I are going on a trip.  I’ll talk about it once we get back, but it means I won’t be responding to blog comments that quickly.  Might have to put a place holder for that week’s goal post too.  Might just be a list of what I plan to do once I get back, which won’t be that interesting.  We’ll see what happens.  Should probably do an Easter post for next Sunday too.  I keep forgetting about that since I’m Jewish.  Still unsure what egg-laying rabbits who went to college for art degrees have to do with Jesus Christ.  Eh, I’ve heard of weirder beliefs.

Dang.  I wanted to use a new song I heard at the top, but the radio played ‘Insane in the Brain’ by Cypress Hill.  Can’t let that one go for the post.

With there only being 3 days of work/school, I don’t have much in the way of plans.  I’m going to be busy anyway.  Thursday is going to be about cleaning and spending time with my son in preparation of guests.  So, it won’t be that exciting.  Might get some biking in at some point.  Should probably do that today once I finish this post.  Could give me some thoughts on more post topics.

My mind is just wandering now.  Got a bad feeling this day is going to go to waste if I drop my guard.  Good thing I didn’t plan on tackling the next Darwin outline.  Saving that for Spring Break.  Well, I’m off to actually get my butt in gear.  Definitely feeling older since I’m moving so slow.  Though, it’s more a mental sluggishness.  Fun!

Goals of the week:

  1. Work with son on projects and studying.
  2. Work hard at work.
  3. Finish the ‘Witcher’ puzzle I’ve been struggling with for months.
  4. Start the Batman Lego set my friend got me for my birthday.
  5. Use my B&N birthday coupon
  6. August posts
  7. Make list of things we need for the trip

Oh yeah!  My son picked his Halloween costume for this year.  It may be early, but I’m thankful for it.  This is my year for buying or making him a costume.  He picked out a doozy for me:

Soul King Brook from One Piece

Yup.  This one is going to take some work.  Thankfully, he’s okay with having the character’s purple cane instead of the shark guitar.  Funniest part is that the sunglasses are going to be the hardest . . . Wait . . . That should work.

GOAL #8- Make list of things needed for this costume and plans for modifications.

A Simple Birthday Post

So, it’s my birthday.  I thought I’d do a goal post as usual, but I think I’m going to do it tomorrow.  I’ll be busy today.  I hope.  So, I’m just going to post some funny stuff about about getting older.  (All images found in Google Image Search.)

The Risks of Noble Intentions

Yahoo Image Search

“Their heart was in the right place.”

“They meant well.”

“It’s the thought that counts.”

The road to Hell may really be paved with good intentions.  Probably a lot of potholes too since it’s bound to be a bumpy ride.  Still, it’s made from people making a situation worse while thinking they’re helping.  Betting we can all think of a few times we’ve seen a person do this.  If not then you may very well be that person.  So, how does this relate to writing fiction?

First, what am I talking about?  These are situations where a person tries to fix a problem from the goodness of their heart.  It typically is done when they don’t have a full grasp of the situation.  The person sees negativity and steps into the middle out of genuine concern, which is different than doing it to be seen as a savior.  The latter isn’t a noble intention at all.  The person truly wants to help.  Of course, there might not even be a problem until they get involved, but that won’t be clear until they get involved.  In the tend, the noble intentions of one person has turned either a small issue into a big one or created a problem where there wasn’t any.

This happens in fiction all the time because heroes naturally try to get involved in the problems they see.  It’s why they’re called heroes, which doesn’t require a full understanding of the situation.  Authors tend to have this work out unless they want to throw a twist into the plot, which is when noble intentions lead to issues.  A common example is when a superhero causes damage and injuries by their actions.  Sure, they were trying to stop the villain, but they broke a lot of windows.  Of course, this has become more popular since ‘The Incredibles’ made it a plot point, so now it’s almost part of the overall genre.  Yet, it’s proof that meaning well doesn’t guarantee 100% success.

Aside from punching problems into submission, character interactions are a large arena for noble intentions going wrong.  One person is trying to help another talk to their crush, which leads to rejection and depression.  A person suspects abuse and calls the cops on a friend’s spouse only to find that they’re into BDSM.  That second one is comical, but put it in a drama to find that you now have a broken friendship and the couple may be more guarded with their private life.  Again, we see that a character is injecting themselves into a situation with the urge to help and they make a mess.

There are two common ways this happens in drama/comedy stories:

  1. The one with noble intentions is the stronger personality and is urging a more timid character to act.  They’re pushing them out of their shell for their own good, which touches on how society thinks shyness is bad.  This is done with no or minimal support from the timid character, who is shown to be uncomfortable.  If it fails then the noble intentions character may feel remorse, but the real damage is done to the person they were pushing.
  2. The one with noble intentions is outside of a situation and perceives a problem that doesn’t really existed.  Just a silly misunderstanding that people can laugh off as long as that’s the genre.  Maybe the cops were called or a surprise was ruined by the intrusive figure.  You find consequences for the nosey character in these scenarios more often than others.  Though, they typically get to bounce back in an epilogue unless they’re going to be shown as the true villain.

This is another aspect of noble intentions gone wrong that you’ll see.  The person being helped tends to be the one who suffers more than the helper.  Unless there is something illegal being done, the helper isn’t going to get arrested.  They might lose a friendship or respect from others, but that’s easier to recover from.  Just move to a new social group that doesn’t know what they did.  Maybe even find one that agrees with the help, which is a move I’ve seen occur in real life.  Meanwhile, the person who was to be helped is in a bad situation.  They won’t trust others as much or take risks because they’ve been burned by someone they felt was a friend or wanted what was best for them.  This is why I think the ‘noble intentions’ path should be taken with care and consideration.

I know I’m taking fiction, but also think about this in real life.  Read the room and tone before trying to help.  You may think you’re immediate action is what’s needed, but it could make things worse.  Sometimes a person simply needs to be heard or to be asked what is wrong.  Never be afraid to ask if someone is okay if you think they’re not.  If they refuse your attention then don’t push them into a corner.  Not everything is a life or death struggle, but you can turn a small bout of tension into an anxiety attack if you’re noble intentions are misplaced.

Isn’t dealing with other humans who possess complicated emotions fun?

Literary Larceny & Why People Should Be Ashamed – By Kristen Lamb…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Literary larceny is a new ‘trend’ that is normalizing stealing from authors. Stealing from authors—or anyone for that matter—is NOT okay. I know, I know. Some topics I shouldn’t even have to blog about. I mean what’s next for blog topics? “The Great Wonders of Using Toilet Paper,” “Why Kicking Puppies is Wrong” “Top Five Reasons Not to Eat Tide Pods.”

Yet, here we are. I know I just posted, but this couldn’t wait. It’s…it’s a problem.

Some people—not all people—should be deeply ashamed that I even have to post on this.

What is literary larceny? Other than a clever use of alliteration? This is when people believe, for some odd reason, that it is perfectly okay to buy an ebook, read it in full then return it…and just keep doing this repeatedly without ever actually paying for a book.

Poetry Day: Apprentices

Harry Potter Meets Constantine

(This poem is self-explanatory.  Apprentices are used a lot in fantasy stories.  I don’t know exactly what prompted the poem, but here we are.)

Chosen by their thirteenth year

To follow in a master’s steps

They wave farewell to youth and home

While preparing for their tasks

Some will sweat among the anvils

While others ache within the woods

Many learn of herbs to cook

Or heal those that fall to pain

Warriors and thieves will grow

From those that find these paths

The lucky ones will find the tower

Where magic is their trade

All will grow to be true masters

And earn apprentices of their own
