Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 9

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

While Fate and Miracle relaxed, their friends were busy working in the enormous space skimmer bay.  The space skimmers are lightweight, twin-engine ships that are used primarily for transportation and exploration.  They are heavily armored, but have no real weapons with the exception of a frontal electromagnetic wave gun.  On the sides of each ship is a bright violet symbol of a comet going through a segmented circle.  Inside is a thin hallway with monitors, buttons, and cabinets.  The cockpit is like that of a jetliner, but there is nothing dividing it from the rest of the ship.

“You had to have come here for more than a simple apology.  Hand me the hammer that’s on the left wing.  It’s the heavy sledge,” says Hydrana from under one of the spaceships.

“That was the main reason I came down here.  But SEAS had told me to drop off that new kind of scanning device that Miracle had made for the space skimmers.  I also wanted to see how you were doing after tonight’s incident with Fate.  Here,” explains Infinity as he hands her a very heavy sledgehammer.  The sound of banging metal echoes throughout the entire room for a few minutes before Hydrana rolls out from under the space skimmer.  Her short and slender body is covered in sweat and sticky engine grease, but she quickly makes a hot blast of water erupt from the floor to clean her.  To dry off, the Neptune guardian simply has the water that is on her evaporate.  When she finally turns to her companion, her face holds an icy stare.

“Were you spying on me, Steve?” asks Hydrana in a voice that is about as cold as her stare.

“No.  I was watching the space sensors when SEAS showed me what had happened.  He recommended that I should talk to you about it.  That machine sounds more human than the four of us at some times,” replies Infinity.  He fidgets a little under her cold stare and takes a few steps back.

“Hold on to that thought.  I really want to set this new scanner up to the sensor array in the rear.  Like I said before, I really should check to see if it is worth the time we put into creating it.”

Hydrana opens up a nearby biohazard box and pulls out a lightly tinted, glass sphere.  Inside is a fully matured human brain with small pieces of red metal and pink wires embedded in it.  The sound of sloshing liquid is clearly heard as Hydrana carries it into the rear of the space skimmer.

After she carefully pulls out another metallic sphere from a console and replaces it with the glass sphere, Infinity says, “What is that thing supposed to do?”

“Funny that you should ask.  Miracle genetically grew and engineered this brain from a few of your brain cells.  But she replaced its telekinetic capabilities with some telepathic capabilities.  It should act as a long-range scanner and prevent anyone from trying to deceive us.  The sensor monitors the brainwaves and thoughts of anyone that we meet in outer space.  I know it sounds a little on the intrusive side, but it could be very helpful.  Unfortunately, it looks like the brain will decompose within a week because our novice scientist couldn’t seem to replicate the correct type of preservative liquids.  This kind is much too acidic for the brain,” explains Hydrana after she installs the sphere.  She quickly leaves the skimmer and leaps up to the twin engines on the roof before Infinity can say anything.

“When did you ever learn about genetics, Hydrana?”

“Never.  But every liquid is somehow connected to water.  I can easily tell how acidic any liquid is and figure out approximately what it will do to a solid.  You wanted to talk to me, then talk to me.  I’m only reconfiguring these nuclear and solar cells in order to make the ships move faster.  It’s relatively easy, so start talking, bird boy.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about your family problems?  I would have gladly helped you solve them,” says Infinity as he stands under the wing.

“Too late now.”

“Is it?”

“Look, Steven.  I’m sorry for not telling you, but I can’t change my past.  No matter how much I want to.  Of course, thanks for caring.”  She leans over the side of the space skimmer, upside down, and kisses Infinity on the lips for a long time.  When a sharp alarm goes off in the skimmer bay, she quickly goes back to her work.

“Whoops.  Almost nuked us into the next millenium.  Silly me.  Can you give the ship a telekinetic jumpstart because the energy cells need a little energy for me to continue the reconfiguration?  It normally takes electricity, but I figure that your birthright powers will be close enough.  Anything else on your mind?  And if you want to share a room like the lovebirds, then shut up and leave.  I told you the last time you brought the subject up that a girl has to have her privacy,” says Hydrana as she fills an empty coolant tank with ice water.  She seals the engine tanks and backflips off the space skimmer just as the engines roar to life.

“What did Fate say to you that caused your little break down?” asks Infinity, who is picking up the tools with several telekinetic hands.

“Hey, SEAS.  I want a glass of Saturnian elixir with a slice of an Earth-grown lemon.  Put a little umbrella in it.  Do you want one, Steve?  Tastes great after you’ve been working hard in the space bay,” she says while pretending to ignore the other guardian’s words.

“Answer the question.”

“No.”

“What did Fate say to you?  You don’t cry or whimper that often and he couldn’t have hurt you with that throw.  It wasn’t strong enough.  So, what did he say?”

“The usual stuff.”

“Answer the question.”

“I don’t want to and I don’t have to.  So there.”  She sticks her tongue out at the Earth guardian and grabs a drink that appears on the floor.

“Answer me!”

All he gets is death-like silence from the redhead.  As soon as she starts crying and tries to run, Infinity gently grabs her arm and hugs her.  At first she tries to resist, but he quickly gets a better grip of her.

“Just tell me and maybe I can help you.  You’ve told me that he mentioned your parents, but why was it brought up?” he questions.

“Eddie said I was irresponsible because I never told my family about me being one of the new planet guardians.  They still think I’m dead or that I ran away.  I thought that it was a stupid thing to do since no one on Earth really knows, or even gives a damn, about our existence.  Only a few people on that planet know we exist and there is no reason for my parents to find out.  Remember that Earth is a sort of off limits area because neither us nor Adriana want to damage it,” Hydrana whispers when she slowly calms down.

“Fate didn’t know about your past,” says Infinity.

“That doesn’t matter.  Fate was right about me.  Not confronting my parents was a mistake and I’m paying for it.  Sooner or later it’ll be too late to get rid of my internal . . .demons.  I won’t be of any use to the rest of you if I keep them locked up.  It’s weird how these things never bothered me before I found out I was immortal.  Now all my problems are turning into monsters and won’t leave me alone.”

“So, you’re going to go talk to your parents.”

“No!”

“Then, what?”

“I don’t know.  I’m so confused.  But seeing him can’t help me.  He’ll just yell at me and try to control me like he always did.  Or he might do what he always did to me whenever I made a mistake.  My birthright powers would mean absolutely nothing to that monster except another way of making money.”

“You sound like a little child.  You’re nineteen and old enough to talk to them on even ground.  You have nothing to worry about.”

“I just want to be alone.  So, please leave.  I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.  I’ll see you tomorrow.”  She pulls herself out of the hug and goes back into the quiet space skimmer.  She hears the sound of a door slamming close and soon after that nothing is heard at all in the large space bay.  When she is sure that she is alone, Hydrana stumbles to a corner of the ship and rolls into a tight ball on the ground.  Now, the only sound is that of her mumbling, “I don’t want to go.  He’ll take away my life again.  I don’t want him to touch me.”

“Excuse me.  Are you okay, Ms. Mandervale?” asks the all around voice of SEAS.  The guardian jumps to her feet and bangs her head on a bulkhead.

“I’m fine.  Except for the fresh bruise on the top of my head.  You’re not going to tell anyone about what I was doing.  Are you?” Hydrana replies as she starts to tamper with the new telepathic scanner.

“I have known about the mental breakdowns since I discovered you were an immortal.  Even then, I did not tell the others.  It was never my place or right to say it without your consent.  I saw that you would a powerful guardian and I had hoped that taking you away from the old life would start your recovery.  But you have been put through enough tonight.  I will tell one of the others about a potentially dangerous problem that I have found.  Goodnight, water sprite.”

“No.  Wait.  I can handle it.  Fate and the others want me to prove myself to them and so do I.  Tell me what’s wrong,” orders Hydrana.

“Very well.  A space shuttle has just left the far side of Pluto and it is heading on a semi-direct course toward Earth.  It jammed all of my scanners before I could determine the exact location of their arrival.  Also, the shuttle has disappeared on visual, so it is impossible to find out where they are at this present time.  Do you know how to solve this little problem?” reports the computer system.

Without a word, the guardian turns on the new type of scanner.  The enhanced brain lets out a slight buzzing, which grows to an almost deafening roar once it finds the shuttle.  Its noise sounds exactly like a cheering crowd after their favorite team has gained a big win.

“It can’t tell us their location through a shadow field, but I can find out what they want on Earth.  We have Draveon, Tegam, Cybro, and Adriana in the shuttle.  Three of the big guns and the immortal pest.  Why would the psycho slut take that prankster along with the cyborg and ultimate weapon?  Eh, I don’t think it matters.”

“What are they thinking about?” asks SEAS.

“Tegam is thinking about practical jokes and every now and then a picture of this woman, named Brina, pops up from his subconscious.  The picture is fuzzy.  Cybro has several weapons and the sight of mutilated bodies in his head.  That’s truly disgusting.  I really don’t want to know anything that the nymphomaniac is thinking because I have more than enough nightmares.  Now we just have to look into the big boy’s mind.  And we have a very big problem,” explains Hydrana as slightly distorted words and pictures appear on the scanner screen.

“Your readings say that Draveon is thinking about getting the sword of light back while on Earth.  He is obsessed with it, but that is not a problem,” states SEAS.

“It’s a trap for us.  They’ll attack Earth in order to draw us out and kill us.  All just to get their hands on that damn magic sword.  We should have seen something like this coming months ago.  Where are the other three guardians?”

“Fate and Miracle are finally asleep in their room.  Infinity. . .is in his own room doing some type of meditation.”

“They’re obviously very busy.  Looks like I’ll have to go after them alone.  I can take this space skimmer and leave a message for the others to follow me later.  I can see my parents too.  Kill seven birds with one sword,” whispers Hydrana to herself.

“I fail to understand that particular phrase.  Is the cliche not ‘kill two birds with one stone’?”

“So, I adlibbed a little.  Here is my plan.  If I take the sword of light and go back to Earth, I can prove to Fate that I’m not irresponsible and selfish.  Then, I can finally confront my parents and put my mental demons to rest.  The other four birds are those immortals that I’m going to stop.”

“Not if I stop you, Delila,” announces Infinity, who is standing in the space skimmer’s open side door.  The startled Neptune guardian stares at him with a face that is half-angry and half-happy.

“I thought you were in your room!” exclaims the redhead as she tries to dive out of the rear doorway.  The pale-eyed boy quickly blocks her path with a telekinetic wall and then he corners her against the hull of the ship.

“I told SEAS to lie.  I heard the entire thing about Adriana’s group going to Earth and setting a trap for us.  But you are not going after them by yourself.”

“Fine.  Then I’ll only take the sword of light and meet with my parents.  If those four idiots get in my way, I’ll simply leave the planet and get you guys.  Of course, I will have to leave through them and show my parents what I have turned into.  After all, they are the ones who made me what I am.”  A feral smirk starts to cross her face as she speaks and Infinity takes a slow, cautious step back.

“And if your parents get killed during the fight?  What happens after that?”

“That’s their problem.  Now, if you truly love me, you will let me go and not tell anyone about this.  You do love me.  Don’t you, Stevie?” she asks in an innocent voice while she puts her slender arms around his neck.  She kisses her fiercely before she lets go and turns to leave.

“I love you enough not to let you go.  Nobody will be doing any suicide missions this year.”  Infinity suddenly has to dive out of the way of a group of large icicles as soon as he stops talking.  They shred his cape, but a telekinetic shield keeps his body in one piece.  The Earth guardian rolls to his feet in time to see a large fist of ice repeatedly smash down on his face.  He remains conscious for a few seconds after the fist melts away, but he can’t get his eyes to adjust.  Eventually they just close and the only thing he can do is listen to the Neptune guardian.

Hydrana carefully drags the young boy and props him up against the wall before whispering, “You may not believe this.  But I’m doing this for everyone, Steve.  It isn’t safe to have me around right now.  I can just feel my sanity slipping away from me.  Please don’t be mad at me.  And if you want to try and stop me from killing anyone then you will have to kill me.  I don’t care how, but do it if it’s necessary.  Why am I even bothering with these words?  You won’t remember any of what I say and SEAS isn’t paying any more to us attention.  So, I guess this is it.  Bye, lover.”

With a final kiss, Hydrana slips out of the space bay in order to steal the sword of light.

7 Tips to Raising Supporting Characters to the Spotlight

Lego Robin (Also Lego Batman)

When writing a long series with multiple characters, you’re bound to have a few that stay in the background.  They get to do some things and a few big scenes, but you forget to draw them out.  At least until an adventure comes up and you realize that they’re perfect for the job.  That’s what happens in War of Nytefall.  Of course, the challenge is that they’re seen as supporting characters, so the spotlight might not fit them perfectly.  Adjustments must be made in some fashion to make sure it works.  So, what can you do?

  1. Even though the characters have been around, you shouldn’t take for granted that the audience knows them.  They may be an afterthought and barely remembered since they haven’t done much.  Of course, you can’t go for a full introduction like you would for a new one.  Accept that the basics such as name and general description are recognizable.  Then work from there by utilizing their skills, powers, and fleshing out their personality.  This can be done at a faster pace than normal because you already have the foundation.
  2. Keep in mind that these characters might not be expecting to be given the reins of an adventure.  They may be more prone to make mistakes and get lost than the more established heroes.  Consider that they were supporting or used less often for a reason, which was because they’re rather nuanced in abilities and focus.  This means that they’re lacking leadership experience in some fashion.  Don’t make them inept, but have them stumble with their new responsibilities.
  3. This is the perfect time to get these characters to grow.  A reason they might be stunted or evolving slower than others is because they were overshadowed.  We’re back to that lack of experience.  Well, here’s that experience they need to become a stronger character for the rest of the series.  Even if it doesn’t make them complete equals with the heavier hitters, they have to be better.  If not for them then for the fans they may make with this adventure.
  4. Have them solve the problems in their own way.  These characters are entering the spotlight for a reason.  Their skills and habits are what you have deemed necessary for this adventure.  They might have to expand their skills and push through their current limits, but they are the heroes for the job.  If they’re solving things the way the other characters do and meeting no resistance then you’ve wasted an opportunity.  Worse, you’ve destroyed a character because they can never be anything more than a shadow of others since they showed no individuality.
  5. Allow them to see their paths to the end and don’t hand the journey off to one of the bigger characters.  That’s an insult to them.  Even if they’re only doing this to help their stronger friends get into a better position for the final battle, you need to make this adventure theirs alone.  Think of it this way:  You’re writing your book and it’s guaranteed to get you success.  You’re on your way and starting to get attention.  Then, the last chapter is snatched by an established author, who is given top credit and you get a tiny thank you in the back.  Not fun.
  6. Don’t throw them away as soon as your done.  If they die then you don’t have a choice, but they should still be mentioned.  After all, these are characters who have actually been there, but now they’re getting attention.  This doesn’t guarantee success or survival, but it should lead to them having an impact on the story and the other characters.  Otherwise, what’s the point of them?
  7. Have as much fun with it as possible.  Using a supporting character for a big adventure can create curiosity with minimal expectations.  Nobody will be sure how things will go, but they’ll know that things will be different.  Mistakes can be epic and funny without being costly.  Successes can be unexpected and confusing even to the characters.  There may be a lot at stake in the story, but that doesn’t mean it has to be dry, serious, and dire.  Throwing a little fun, even without comedy, can go a long way.

Music of Quest of the Brokenhearted

Cover Art by Sean Harrington

Quest of the Brokenhearted is what one would call a spin-off.  This story shows what happened to Kira Grasdon after the battle with Baron Kernaghan.  She grew from a one-scene character that I created on a whim to a central figure in the overall story, so I wanted to give her a time to shine.  This story was heavily influenced by the Castlevania videogame series too.  The thought of a single warrior entering a castle or city of monsters to do battle felt like a writing challenge.  I also had to show how much Kira has changed in the years since the finale and explain why she would go on a suicide mission.  Of course, the songs had to show this as well and that was harder than it seemed.

Kira enters this adventure having no fear of dying.  In fact, she’s at the point where she is almost looking forward to it.  This gives her a disturbing level of strength and cunning because she doesn’t see anything as too risky.  I think the oddly upbeat tone of the song fits as well since Kira is kind of happy about this prospect.  Either she comes out a hero or dies in the shadows, which both seem like wins to her.

A fight song that really fits this story.  I can’t tell if I’m connecting it to Kira wanting to burn Lacarsis the monster city down or her own life.  There is a sense of someone being pushed too far and go berserk, which is kind of true here.  Kira has been pushed to her limits and is on the verge of breaking, which is why she goes on this quest.

These songs really aren’t requiring as much of an explanation as I expected.  Kira is standing alone here.  She does get a few allies, but they aren’t combat-related.  For every battle, she is on her own.  The ‘I stand alone inside’ part is true too because she struggles to remain distant from others.  After all, she really doesn’t want to get hurt again like she did in the Legends of Windemere finale.

Questions 3: Mutual Enemies in a Series

Megatron and Optimus Prime being awkward

A few times in War of Nytefall, Clyde and his enemies have to unite against a common enemy.  It’s been pointed out as ridiculously common and thrown their war into disarray.  After all, how can you maintain a civil war when you have to keep working with the other side?  Part of this is because the war is really a grudge between Clyde and Xavier, so they are able to put their differences aside for their kingdoms when a third party steps in to cause trouble.  Nobody said these two were rational when it came to each other.

This continuing interruption has made me consider a lot of questions about enemies coming together for a shared goal.  You do see this a lot in series, especially superhero tales.  Seems like it’s inevitable too.  Yet, it isn’t very easy to pull off.  These characters are supposed to hate each other, but now they work together.  There has to be some friction, but not so much that they can’t operate.  On the other hand, you can’t have them be best friends or their rivalry won’t make any sense after the shared threat is over.  It could end the major plot before it’s time.  So, I’ve had to create these tentative alliances or have them inadvertently work together.  Thankfully, it’s worked out so far.  Don’t think I can pull it off again since I’m heading for the end.

Still, let’s see what people think about enemies working together.

  1. Do you like it when enemies work together against a common foe?
  2. How would you write such an alliance?
  3. What is one piece of advice you would give an author who wants to attempt this?

War of Nytefall: Savagery Blurb Test

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Time to test the blurb out . . . I should probably write it too.  Not sure why I was dragging my feet here.  This is going to go on the Amazon and Goodreads sites.  So, here goes:

*

For the first time in over a century, Clyde will know what it means to feel powerless and weak.

Headless bodies appearing across Windemere is only the beginning as Clyde faces the terrifying Alastyre.  Able to match the Dawn Fang leader in power and ferocity, this new menace shows no sign of weakness or mercy.  With both friends and enemies getting dragged into the battle, Clyde will have to find a way to become stronger.  For that, he will have to accept an ancient challenge and pray that those he cares about and trusts can hold Alastyre at bay.

Which monster of Windemere will claim the top of the food chain?

*

This one is really tough to put together because I used Clyde knowing fear in a previous blurb.  At the time, I didn’t realize he’d be even more terrified of Alastyre.  Yet, he does feel a greater sense of frustration and powerlessness this time.  Probably because he can tell that he’s facing a stronger enemy.  Fingers crossed, I guess.

This May Be Shorter than Usual

Warning:  The video above has a lot of cursing and a few strobes effects.  Still, I find it funny and the radio keeps playing the safe version.  Besides .

.

.

This week was bad.

You know, I keep saying things are rough and I have expectations for the following week, but . . . this was bad.  Worst part is that the future doesn’t look to be any easier.  Anxiety will be running high and anything short of an elephant tranquilizer won’t solve that problem.  Can’t talk about it in public either, so you get vagueness on the blog.  I can’t even think of anything else to talk about here.

The blurb for War of Nytefall: Savagery will be up tomorrow for a test.  Not sure how it came out.  I might do a final editing run at nights since I’m just doing it to see if everything feels right.  That’s all for that.  Absolutely no luck finding an artist for cover and interior art for Do I Need to Use a Dragon? (Fantasy Writing Tips) either.  Don’t even know where to look anymore.

I’m watching ‘Record of Lodoss War’ because I’ve seen it before and my heart isn’t really into anything else.  Might watch the final Rurouni Kenshin movie tonight or tomorrow if I can muster the desire.  It could be best to wait until next week though.

Can’t do any outlining at work right now because of what’s going on.  Breaks are minimal or I’m too out of it to attempt things.  I could push a little harder on the ‘Brian Hunter’ stuff to get it done.  Maybe I should do that instead of trying to edit my next release while I’m stressed so much.  I might just try to finish the April blog posts and start in on May if I have any topics.  Feel free to suggest any subjects that I can touch on for May.  Think I’m stretching my topics a lot.  Any topic that I can revisit?

Yup . . . That’s really it.  Life took an unexpected and rough turn in many areas.  This could have easily been the worst week of my life if not for the one where I learned I was getting divorced.  On the plus side, I get a haircut today, which I desperately need.  That’s pretty much it.

Goals of the week:

  1. Survive

How to Kill a Dawn Fang

Yahoo Image Search

Way back, I was asked by Chris the Story Reading Ape about how one would kill a Dawn Fang.  It seems very difficult since they can regenerate and continue fighting with severe injuries.  At the very least, they’d escape to heal and come back within a few hours or the next day.  Funny thing is that this issue comes into play with Savagery and it’s the perfect time to answer it.

First, you need to know what the two most important parts of a Dawn Fang are:

  1. The Brain–  This is what controls their powers and maintains their life.  Not that different than a mortal’s brain.  Although, this can be healed albeit slower than other organs.  That’s as long as the Dawn Fang is still considered alive and the brain is still attached to the rest of the body.  Otherwise, the vampire goes into a coma until the brain is returned, which is usually a third party reattaching the head.  A Dawn Fang could feasibly spend eternity in this coma if their head is cut off and lost while the rest of the body is preserved.  Rather embarrassing.
  2. The Heart–  Classic vampire weakness, but this won’t kill them.  It can weaken a Dawn Fang immensely by turning them back into an old-world vampire.  This means they’re affected by the sun, are about halved in physical abilities, and their special skills are either lost or minimized to a fraction of their power.  Unlike the brain, the heart can be regenerated even if it’s completely gone.  It takes a year, so the Dawn Fang will go into hiding until they regain their power.

Note that neither of those two sections stated that destroying the brain or the heart would kill a Dawn Fang.  It was a coma and a devolution.  Both of those can be undone if enough time and help are granted.  Of course, beheading and staking are the two most common ways to destroy classic vampires.  This means that a hunter who isn’t aware of the difference may go for one and forget the other.  They could decapitate and walk away, which doesn’t solve the problem.  As for staking, a Dawn Fang may go along with it in order to end the fight and then leave once the coast is clear.  Remember that most Dawn Fangs don’t really want to get into this type of trouble.  Easier to play possum and leave to report the hunter to somebody who can do something about it.  So, how exactly do you kill a Dawn Fang?

Step 1–  Make sure it isn’t Clyde because you’d be dead before you can start.
Step 2–  Also make sure it isn’t Mab because that isn’t any better.
Step 3–  See Step 2, but for Lost . . . Okay, I’ll get to the steps.
Step 4–  Decapitate first.  This will leave the Dawn Fang defenseless due to coma.
Step 5–  Destroy the heart, which turns it into an old world vampire, which can be permanently killed by decapitation.

That’s the easiest way to do it since you need both organs destroyed or removed.  You could go for the heart first, but then you still have an active vampire on your hands.  It will be a lot more panicked and ferocious too since it’s a step closer to death.  A weakened Dawn Fang is still a Dawn Fang, which means you might not be able to finish the job before you’re killed or it runs away.  Not to mention, going directly for the heart and then preparing to decapitate will make it clear what you’re attempting.  So, you won’t have much time to deliver the second blow.  Incapacitate and then kill is a smarter way to do the slaying.

Of course, you’re still talking about a creature that’s fast, strong, and cunning.  They also have three powers that you probably won’t know about.  This makes Dawn Fang hunting incredibly difficult and dangerous.  Probably not the best way to make your money, especially since they’re trying not to cause any trouble.  Any Dawn Fangs that are causing trouble tend to get handed by their own as long as they’re reported.

A funny thing in War of Nytefall is that it took a while for the Dawn Fangs to realize that decapitation didn’t permanently kill them.  So, many of their enemies who they killed prior to that were able to be revived as long as they found the head.  A big reason for this is because Clyde had a habit of pulverizing his opponents.  His strength made it that he was killing any Dawn Fangs who tried to kill him, so his friends thought they were doing the same thing.  Nobody ever thought to question this until later.  The knowledge didn’t change anyone’s behavior though.  To them, it was a war and they saw their opponents as irredeemable enemies.  Well, one person thought differently.  Read the books if you want to find out who.

“You can’t possibly be serious!” yells Fate.  He has just started to relax in the bedroom that he shares with Miracle.  It is a lot bigger than most of the other living quarters and the room has more than the usual bed, chairs, and table.  As always, a large, floating crystal supplies light that is as bright as ten lightbulbs.  One corner of the room is filled with tall, multi-colored flowers and a circle of soft, cushioned chairs is placed near the other side of the room.

“I am serious.  Just give her a chance and then we will all be happy.  You know what she’ll do if you keep saying no,” responds Miracle as she puts on a long nightshirt with a picture of a roaring tiger on the front.

“She is the least responsible out of us all.  Anything I can think of and more could go wrong with that spoiled brat in charge.  I’m supposed to relax and I can’t do that if I’m worrying about the base imploding.”

“Listen to you.  You’re treating her like the stuck up pest she was a year ago.  We both know that she’s changed.”

“Not that much.  Hydrana is much friendlier and not as obnoxious as she used to be.  I’ll admit that to anyone who dares to say otherwise.  But she still tries to avoid most of her responsibilities.  And she doesn’t seem to care who gets hurt in the process.  Whether it is one of us or one of Adriana’s gang, it doesn’t matter to her as long as she does what she wants.”  Fate goes into the large, walk-in closet to find his nightclothes before Miracle can get another word in.

“Do you hate her?” she suddenly asks when he comes back into the room wearing a pair of black boxer shorts.

“No.  After we spent a full month together, fighting an army of those immortal hunters, I trust and respect her.  She is a very good warrior, but that doesn’t make her a leader or a second-in-command.”

“I thought you just said that you trusted her.  Look, Fate.  We can discuss this at a later date.  Come to bed,” says Miracle as she slips under the thick, gray blanket.

“I trust her to a point.  I simply told her that she had to prove herself.  I want her to show me that she can handle leader-like decisions,” mentions the Mars guardian as he starts pacing back and forth.

“I should have expected this on the first night of relaxation.  You are not going to let this thing go any time soon.  Just don’t pace anymore because it’s making me nauseous.  I said stop.”  The black-haired immortal uses her birthright power to create a metal wall in front of her boyfriend.  Since he is still lost in his thoughts, Fate walks right into it.

“Ouch.  What was that for?”

“For not paying attention to me, which is becoming a life-threatening habit of yours.  Now, tell me what happened when you talked with Delila.  All I know about is the practice session and what she had said.  Something in your little story is missing.  Was she in a bad mood because she had a fight with Steve this afternoon?  He got on her case about being irresponsible and mentioned . . . her . . .parents.”

“What’s wrong?”

Miracle gracefully jumps out of the bed and looks Fate directly into his deep, blue eyes before saying, “You didn’t.”

“Didn’t what?” asks Fate as he collapses into a nearby chair.

“Did you by any chance mention her parents?  Be honest or else I’ll throw you through the wall and into the sun.”

“Yes.  I did.  Then, she attacked me and I had no choice but to throw her over the bar.  Next thing I know, she’s crying and telling me about her childhood, which wasn’t a happy one.  She was really scared of her father and I have a strange feeling far in the back of my head why that is.  It’s like one of those dark ideas that one doesn’t want to believe is true.”

“Never mention Hydrana’s parents in front of her.  She either breaks down crying or makes Psylon look like a harmless nun.  Her parents treated her like an unwanted dog instead of a human being.  The worst is that her father sexually abused her when she was a small child and he also beat her mother.  I’ve been privately talking with her about handling the memories.  She feels safer talking to another woman about her problems.  But, how could you do that to her?  She was only asking if she could help you by taking away a few of your problems.”

“You knew about it?  You knew about her past and didn’t bother to tell me about it?  And I’m the one that is being blamed here.”  Fate jumps to his feet and walks over to Miracle.  She sticks out her arm and calmly shoves Fate back into the seat before staring him down.

“Yeah.  It’s called keeping a promise, Edward.  She first told me when we were returning to Earth and she made me promise not to tell anyone.  She really didn’t want you and Steve to find out.  But since she told you, I don’t have anything more to do with keeping it a secret,” says Miracle as she sits on the edge of the bed.

“A small warning would have been nice,” mutters Fate.

“I guess it would have helped.”  Miracle yawns and slowly slips back into bed as Fate gets up from the chair and massages his neck.

“You’re not as sorry as I am.  This morning she mentioned that she had something to do to one of the space skimmers.  She was going to test some new improvements on the engines and adding some weaponry.  I should go apologize.”

“Do it tomorrow.  Now, come to bed before I make a bullet train run you over several times,” orders Miracle in a tired, yet utterly playful, voice.

“But I’m not tired.  Sleep can wait,” Fate replies.

“Maybe it can, but I can’t wait.  Besides, who said anything about us sleeping tonight?”
