When You Want to Hamper the Telepath

Yahoo Image Search

There was a challenge I didn’t expect in War of Nytefall: Anarchy.  The villain’s plan involved a lot of subterfuge and traps.  This isn’t surprising considering you’re dealing with an army hell bent on destroying the Dawn Fangs.  It shouldn’t have been too hard except for one problem:

Nytefall has Lost and her telepathy.

Originally, Lost’s powers weren’t supposed to be this strong.  In the notebook, it was simply a mind jacking ability.  She could take over someone’s body and have them do whatever she wants.  Yet, this also allowed her to read their thoughts and alter their memory, so they didn’t know what happened.  I realized that this is basically telepathy without calling it so.  Not sure which book I gave up trying to make it seem like it was something else, but it happened.  This helped to show how the powers of a Dawn Fang can evolve with practice too.  Well, that’s the story I’m going with since I do it with other characters.

Of course, I didn’t realize Lost became a massive obstacle to get Anarchy off the ground and not destroyed immediately. As I said, the paladin army and those attacking temple members weren’t going to get far once she scanned their brains.  She had become too powerful for this specific story, so I needed to figure things out.  I know other authors would kill the troublesome character, but Lost plays a major role in the finale.  Didn’t make sense to make one story work by crippling another.

Something that I remembered with telepathy and psychic powers in general is that they work a lot off emotional stability.  If a telepath is stressed or gone through trauma then they might lose some of their power.  It isn’t gone for good, but they have to work through the problem to regain their strength.  Keep wanting to say it’s like a car needing a tune-up, but you’re still on a road trip.  That analogy is kind of clunky though.  It’s really just a person with mental health issues, which are getting in the way of their abilities.  This just happens to involve the ability to read and alter minds.

With Lost being so happy-go-lucky, I found it hard to give her a reason to fall.  I gave myself a little time before I had her reveal the reason for the block.  Mostly because I didn’t have a clear idea until I had written her for a bit.  Turns out that Alastyre coming so close to destroying everything she loves created the block.  It isn’t connected directly to her powers, but I only needed some trauma.  This means she isn’t at her best, so the villains have a better chance at success in their plans gaining ground.  Being aware of her doubts also means she isn’t straining herself, so distance becomes an issue too.

This does come off a small plot point, but it has a big impact.  It also gives Lost a minor path to follow on her own.  It’s been a while since she’s been more than a sidekick to other characters, so she deserves a little extra attention here.  This way she will be at her best for the finale too.

War of Nytefall: Eulogy is on the Horizon

The piece are swiftly coming together for a December release of War of Nytefall: Eulogy.  This will be the final volume of the series, which means I will be retiring the Dawn Fangs.  Sort of.  The survivors could always turn up in future series, especially since I’ll be jumping to events occurring both of my series.  Still, feels weird coming to this point once more.  That’s not the reason for the post though.

First, I’m going to be asking for blog tour volunteers again.  I know it’s so soon after the last one, but this is to see if anyone will jump at a casual inquiry.  I’m going to make a bigger push for volunteers in November as I get closer to the release on the first weekend of December.  At least that’s the plan.  I really need to edit the book and I have to write up a blurb.

The big thing I want to ask is the following:

What would you want to know about War of Nytefall?

I made a list of blog topics to tie into the book and series once December hits.  Some of them are kind of weak because I’m too focused on dodging spoilers.  Well, I figure a better source of questions would be people who don’t already know everything about the series and characters.  It can be about the process or anything that you would want to know if this was your last chance to get information.  After all, I won’t have any more volumes to publish and open the door for other Dawn Fang tidbits.  So, it might just be the last chance to get answers.

Post a question in the comments and I’ll try to use it for a post in December.  Thanks.

Goal Post: Survive Until the Next Weekend

Today is my niece’s first birthday, so I won’t be replying to comments that quickly once things start.  Big party with lots of people.  I’ll be busy and won’t be able to sneak off to my laptop or use my phone much.  I won’t mind.  It’s a nice ending to a really rough week that I will need time to recover from.

Week was busy and that’s the best I can do as far as details.  My schedule got changed around, so I needed to adapt and change.  Sadly, I screwed myself up a few times early on in the week.  Specifically, I headed out on Tuesday with no breakfast and forgot to bring something for lunch.  In my infinite genius, I thought I could muscle through, but it didn’t go well.  Didn’t eat a lot for dinner the night before, which meant I ended up running on empty faster than I expected.  Managed to snag a bite or two of a sandwich that didn’t taste that great.  Gave me enough energy to make it home though.  My blood sugar definitely bottomed out and I had no water, so I genuinely wrecked myself.  Still feeling the effects today even though I stashed two containers of snacks in my desk and made sure to hydrate better.

Being an idiot aside, my week was just one of handling situations until night fell and I could pass out.  My son had several quizzes, a test next week, and a variety of projects that I needed to help him with.  Things didn’t get explained by him very well, so we had some juggling and rushing after talking to teachers.  Plus side, he got good grades on everything he did and I only acted as a supervisor instead of doing the leg work.  Hoping this is only us getting back into the swing of things.  I’m sure we’ll get more zaniness once clubs start up, but that might not be for another few weeks.

Should talk about writing too . . . I got nothing done.  I now remember one of the downsides to hand editing.  While you can bring the manuscript around and work on it when you have time, it means you’re doing it out in the open.  Editing while sitting in the faculty lounge during a free period doesn’t quite work when people are talking.  I don’t want to be antisocial here.  It’s a pet peeve of mine too because I can’t have music like I normally do.  So, I’m waiting for a perfect situation that might not come.  Good thing I have time on editing War of Nytefall: Eulogy since I still have half the book to go and then putting the edits into place.

By the way, I don’t have as much time as I thought on editing War of Nytefall: Eulogy since I want to publish at the beginning of December.  Oops!  September got away from me and now I’m looking at only October and November to hand edit, computer edit, write a blurb, set up December promo posts, and give the book to my usual reader for a final opinion.  This is on top of work, parenting, and whatever else comes my way.  It doesn’t help that I can’t bring my laptop anywhere because the casing is coming apart, so I can’t close it.  Kept together by gorilla tape and I can’t afford to buy a new machine.  It works, but the casing comes apart even more if I close it.

That’s really it.  I watched an anime called ‘Muyho & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation’, which wasn’t too bad.  It’s a show that I’ll remember a little for a bit, but I think it’s going to fade.  Interesting in concept, but it would suddenly jump to creepy and mild gore.  Kind of threw me off.  Although, it’s about ghosts and characters who are basically supernatural lawyers sentencing the ghosts to various punishments depending on the crimes.  I never really got the idea of how those things were decided since I rarely saw a repeated move.  Oh well.  I’ll finish it this weekend and then wait until next weekend before I finish ‘Seven Deadly Sins’.  I should probably edit at night this week.

Goals of the week?

  1. Birthday party today!
  2. Work and play.
  3. Help son study and do homework.
  4. Try to rest my shoulder.  Hurts around the clavicle and lower edge of the blade unless I ice it.
  5. Editing if I can.  Maybe I’ll get some done tomorrow.
  6. Cook Taco Pie for dinner tomorrow.
  7. Hydrate
  8. Bike . . . Why do I even bother with this one?

Clyde and Mab on Marriage

Munsters!

Clyde–  He’s not even trying with the pictures any more.

Mab–  At least one of them is a vampire.

Clyde– So, we’re really going to do this?

Mab–  He locked us in a room, so we don’t have a choice.

Clyde–  This is kind of private.  Is he wincing as he writes this?

Mab–  Somebody has issues.

Clyde–  Let’s get this over with.  In War of Nytefall: Anarchy . . . He really made me say the whole title.  Fine.  Mab and I are revealed as married with the level of celebration one would expect from the mail being delivery as expected.

Mab–  We understand why.  We also know that we weren’t that easy to work with on this because we were rather bland about it in his head.  There were notes about it being a bigger deal at one point, but it didn’t fit our personalities.  I mean, you’d think he never met us when he wrote those.

Clyde–  I know.  Regardless of what we are now, we were thieves at the start.  That means we don’t want a lot of attention.  So, a simple ceremony between books seemed like the best way to do it.

Mab–  To be honest, it doesn’t feel like anything has really changed.  Not between us anyway.  Your average Dawn Fang who knows about it will treat me with a different level of manners.  I’d say more respect, but that was never an issue.  It’s more that they act like they’re talking to a Queen instead of their ruler’s partner.  So, the title definitely has some advantages.

Clyde–  I don’t get that, but I will admit it is nice to say wife and not have to explain the partner or girlfriend thing.  Everyone was wondering when I’d make her my bride as if I could order that to help.  Just figured it was time to step to the next level.  We discussed it . . . put it off for a year and then did it.

Mab–  I don’t even remember who started the discussion.

Clyde–  It was Chastity.

Mab–  I meant between us.

Clyde–  Think it was me asking you about it because I was tired of Chastity bringing it up.

Mab–  Nothing says matrimonial bliss like getting hitched to shut a friend up.

Clyde–  We aren’t doing very well with this.

Mab–  Well, it’s nobody’s business really. Why do people get so invested in the marriages of fictional characters?  He didn’t show people getting married in his previous series.  Does this guy not know how to write a wedding scene?

Clyde–  He wouldn’t be the first fantasy author who screwed up a wedding scene.  Best for him to not touch it if he’s unsure of himself.

Mab–  Seriously, I don’t think our marriage scene would have given the books anything.  If done at the end of Savagery, it would have been awkward since the book was about Alastyre coming in to nearly destroy us.  I was still recovering from the torture at the end of that, so not the time to put me in a dress.

Clyde–  You didn’t wear a dress.

Mab–  Nobody would have known that if you hadn’t said anything.  Let them imagine it.

Clyde–  True.  Putting the wedding at the start of Anarchy would have been clunky since part of the story is our union being solidified for a while.  Can’t do it in the prologue and then jump ahead a few years.  So, there really wasn’t anywhere to put this thing, which means we simply act like ourselves, but married.

Mab–  Definitely makes us seem stable.

Clyde–  We’ll end on that silver lining.

War of Nytefall Factions: Paladins of Windemere

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Welcome to another War of Nytefall: Anarchy poem.  Hope a few people have picked up a copy of the book for 99 cents.  Now, let’s meet the paladins in a way.

The greatest
Of holy servants
Feared and revered
Across the lands
Small in number
Vast in power
They are the banes of evil
*
For every order
A paladin has sworn
Vowing
To sustain their creed
Whether it be the heal
Or to harm
*
Never have they merged
All orders stand alone
Until today
Paladins are uniting
To smite the rumored fangs
In their greatest crusade

Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 30

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

On the huge deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid, Adriana waits for her very late allies.  She has spent the past six hours wandering around the aircraft carrier’s hallways and she has gotten lost countless times.  When the voluptuous immortal does find the way to the deck, her head hurts from being constantly hit against low hanging pipes and painful falls down the steep stairwells.  Before she takes a long, impatient breath of cool air, a semi-transparent ship lands on the Intrepid.

“Nice choice.  One has to relish in the irony.  An ancient ship of mortals to hide a new ship of immortals,” mentions Tegam as he jumps out of the space shuttle.  The prankster is no longer wearing his comical jester outfit.  In its place is a decent pair of jeans, a button-down shirt made of silk, and cowboy boots.  All in all, the redheaded immortal looks pretty handsome.

“What took you so long?  And, why are you wearing normal clothes?” asks Adriana.  A few yards behind her, a large form climbs onto the slick deck and starts hacking up gallons of seawater.  Draveon steps into the light while shaking both water and some slimy seaweed off of him.

“Hello, Draveon.  I take it that you’ve encountered some, if not all, of the guardians.  As you can both see, I’m a changed man.  My memories are starting to come back to me.  So, I won’t be with your team for much longer, Adriana.  I estimate that you can count on my services for less than an hour.  It is so good to be a free man once again.”

“Good for you, prankster.  So, I guess it’s finally time for you to join your old friend.  Tell Solix that we say rot in hell,” mutters Draveon.  He is about to move toward Tegam, but Adriana steps in his way.

“Let me handle this.  Just go into the shuttle and call the backup transport.  Try to dry off as best you can because you smell like a wet dog.  So, Tegam.  What exactly do you remember?  Your connection to the guardians?  Your, now dead, true love, Brina?  I’d really like to know,” whispers Adriana while she wraps her arms around Tegam’s neck and stares into his deep, blue eyes.

“To be honest, not everything has returned.  Only my connection to Brina has come back, but even that tends to disappear every now and then.  If I were you, I would not try to seduce me.  It is a pointless move, Adriana.  Just let me leave this fake life behind me.  We were friends before all of this happened.  I would request in the name of our friendship that you let me go.”  Without warning, the busty blonde kisses the prankster and wraps her legs tightly around his slim body.

“What were you saying about my powers?”

“I said that your powers are useless if used against someone with as much willpower as I have.  But I guess I said a half-lie.  My body is yours to command, but my mind is still mine to regain and control.  God I hate hormones.”

“Who cares about your mind?  As long as that sleek, slender body is under my power, I don’t give a damn.  You know, Tegam, I never noticed how sexy you look in a good set of normal clothes.  Maybe after this is all over, we can ditch the muscle and the metal.  Take a nice vacation in the Bahamas.”

“Excuse me.  Should I go somewhere else and leave you two alone?” Draveon asks.  Adriana unwraps herself from Tegam and walks over to a nearby jet.  She pretends to ignore both of the men, who are carefully whispering to each other.

“Are you still with me?” whispers the larger man.

“Not anymore.  Even if I was not going be to what I was before I joined this group.  I’ve . . . learned some things that must be said before Adriana dies.  She has a secret that even Startrix could not have predicted,” responds the redhead.  He sits on the space shuttle’s wing while Draveon paces in front of him.

“So tell me the secret and then you can help me kill her.  Now, do we still have our original deal?”

“No.  It’s not my secret to expose.  Only Adriana has the right to tell you.  And she has decided to die before any of us can find out.”

“Then that is exactly what will happen.  Why did she tell you this big secret anyway?  You may not be the annoying disease that you used to be, but, in my personal opinion, you can’t be trusted.”

“I can be trusted a lot more than you, Draveon.  The only reason she told me was that I was there when she discovered the truth.  Hard to lie about the truth when I have already seen the evidence.  But I do have something to tell you that is of major importance to your current plan.  Major being an understatement.”

Draveon laughs and asks, “What could that possibly be, jester?  Adriana is weak and nothing she does can stop me from eliminating her.”

“Oh, really?  There’s a hidden reason Adriana brought us to Earth.  You see, Startrix knows about your little assassination plan.  She had told Adriana about it and that was when this plan to attack Earth was thought up.  Our cunning leader is trying to trick both you and Fate into fighting each other to the death.  Once that fight is done, she will simply pick off the weakened survivor.  It’s a very clever plan, isn’t it?  Get you and Slane to do most of the work for her while she watches from nearby with a bag of popcorn.  Actually, I think she brought some peanuts for the fight instead of popcorn.  I forgot to ask.  Although, certain current events may change her plans ever so slightly.  But you will still be her primary target.  The guardians are nothing but an excuse to get you killed,” explains Tegam.

“My prey is trying to hunt me?  How adorable is that?  Well, it seems that I will have to eliminate both of my enemies at the same time.  Fate and Adriana will inevitably do battle during this little trip.  That cannot be prevented when they are this close to one another.  I will catch them and torture them before I gladly finish the job.”

“Incoming!” yells Adriana as a silver form flies toward the Intrepid.  The object hits the boat’s deck and bounces into the side of the villains’ space shuttle.

“I am having a very bad day,” mentions Cybro, who has become nothing more than a smoking piece of scrap metal with a head, that is slowly putting itself back together.

“You and me both.  What happened to you, Cybro?  And, where the hell is your hand?” inquires Adriana.  The cyborg stands up on injured legs to reattach his arms while the woman picks up his rolling head.

“Draveon and I ran into all four of the planet guardians in the middle of Times Square.  You will be happy to know that Hydrana and the lucky guardian are back to normal.  We had already stopped three of them, but then Draveon left me alone with the water sprite.  She knocked me into an electric billboard, which shut down most of my systems for hours.  My body managed to bond itself to the scrap metal around me, so this is why my body is messed up.”

“Hey!  I didn’t leave of my own free will.  Hydrana used a geyser to launch a chunk of the street into the ocean.  It just so happened that I was standing on that particular chunk.  Besides, Cybro said that he could handle the brat,” says Draveon.  He helps Adriana put Cybro’s head back on while the robot replaces his missing hand with his large stomach claw.

“You’re going to have to get a different kind of titanium claw when we get home.  That one is far too big to put on your wrist.  By the way, where’s your hand and the Neptune weapon?” questions Adriana.

“The hand should still be sitting in Times Square unless some of the rats that I saw took it away.  At least, I think they were rats.  Honestly, they looked too big for normal vermin, but they acted like rodents.  Anyway, it was not my real hand, so I do not care.”

“Neither do I, metal head.  But I do care about that magic ring.  Please tell me that you managed to get that weapon back.”

“Well, I was a little busy.  The high voltage that was continually shutting my body down preventing me from acting.”

“That’s not a good excuse,” laughs Draveon.

“Stay out of this, Draveon.  Just stand there and look menacing, which is the only thing that I think you were created for.  Now, who do you think has the ring, you glorified toaster oven?” the blond immortal says while Draveon wanders off and grumbles to himself.

“Since Hydrana is the Neptune guardian, I would assume that she has it.  But we cannot do anything about it, so we should not bother worrying.  What is your plan to finish off the guardians?”

“Simple.  Each one of us will take on the guardian we’re more suited to fight.  I will take care of Fate, although that should go without saying.  There are some things I found that can be used against him.  Draveon and Cybro will confront the water sprite and bird boy.  But first, I want Cybro to lead our backup in order to weaken the planet guardians.  So, Draveon will be on his own against the two guardians if the tin can get knocked out.  Tegam’s target is going to be Miracle,” explains Adriana.  She goes into a nearby doorway and takes out a gift wrapped box.

“I have a question,” Cybro announces.

“This present is a little something for Fate and it is none of your business.  All you should know about this thing is that I have had this surprise prepared for fifteen years.  Startrix helped me get this ready.”

“That was not what I was thinking about.  Would it not be better to tell Tegam his part in our plan when he is here?”

“He is here.  He’s probably just invisible as usual.  Didn’t you see him when you crash landed?”

“No.  I have always been able to pick him up on my heat scanners even when he was invisible.  He is not on this aircraft carrier.”  The expression on Adriana’s face turns savage as she yells so loud that one of Cybro’s glass eyelids shatters.

“Are you okay?” asks Draveon with a smile.

“No!  This is an historic first, guys.  I have just met the first man that I can say I truly despise.”  She storms off into the space shuttle and tries to get some sleep while the others rest outside.

“What is the problem?  It is only Tegam,” states the cyborg, whose body is finally back in one piece.

“Tegam didn’t fall for her powers.  And, you know how well she takes that kind of rejection from men,” replies Draveon.  A look of extreme pain crosses his face for a second as a distant, agonizing memory returns.

“That jester is a dead man.”

The Royal Couple of Nytefall: Clyde & Mab Hitched

Dracula and Mina

Is this a spoiler for War of Nytefall: Anarchy?  I doubt it only because anyone who follows the series would know this is where it was going.  If a person starts here then it would simply be that Clyde and Mab are married from the beginning.  This is constant for how they’ve operated.

I never threw a big ‘will they or won’t they’ scenario to their relationship.  It was always more of a ‘when’ question.  Mab believed Clyde was still alive for 50 years after everyone else had given up.  He has protected her when she’s been injured as if he was the one under attack.  She has done the same.  They’ve trusted each other through everything, so marriage felt like the most natural course.  Given how the last two books are back-to-back, it was Anarchy that needed this to happen.  Otherwise, it would have to occur after the adventures were over.  Didn’t want it to go that way.

Through this change, I was able to evolve Clyde and Mab as individuals too.  With Mab, she’s now working towards being a more active ruler instead of the thief lurking in the shadows.  You see her pushing herself into leadership roles and trying to expand on the title Dark Mistress.  She was always a co-leader with Clyde, but it’s like the marriage made that feel more real.  Prior to this, Mab would go off on her own and act like the other council members with simply giving advice.  I don’t know if I would say this happened directly from the marriage, but that and her newfound desire to be more politically involved certainly go hand-in-hand.

Clyde was more subtle in his change after marriage.  He’s starting to show his own thoughts on where he belongs after the war.  Being a combat-based character with a battle lust, he’s fully aware that peaceful world might not have a place for him.  That’s a problem if someone is going to live forever.  With being a married man, he’s able to put his energy and focus on something else. Clyde won’t be ruling alone and he will have the person he trusts the most to help him through eternity.  He also knows that she won’t let him get bored and always has a heist or challenge in mind.  It isn’t that different from their dating level, but there’s more clarity in his mind now.

All of that being said, this was a hard path to follow.  Clyde is one of my core surrogates since I played him for a while in college Vampire games.  Mab was the character played by my ex-wife, which I did some big alterations on.  So, the divorce certainly kept popping up in my mind when I was under stress or writing tired.  There was a temptation to not having it go there and undo the change.  Yet, I shouldn’t be taking my personal issues out on fictional characters who have nothing to do with reality.  Let this be a lesson in using surrogates for yourself and loved ones.  They can evoke some harsh emotions if you aren’t careful.  Double-edged sword there.

Should I have shown their wedding?  I wondered about this after I edited the book, but realized there was nothing to show.  These two didn’t have a ceremony.  They ran off with the council and go married in secret.  They couldn’t elope since Lost would figure it out before they left and Titus would want to see his big sister get married.  Gregorio was the one who did the ceremony and Chastity did the catering.  They rode off on a horse made by Bob because he insisted.  Oh, and Lost would have thrown flowers and overdone it to the point where she got in trouble.  All of this has been made up on the fly because it wouldn’t have gone that way.  It would have been dull, simple, and quick because they’d feel it was just a formality.

Huh, wonder what that says about my own thoughts on marriage.  Well, time to end this post before I go too far.

How can I do a month of War of Nytefall: Anarchy teasers without including one with Clyde and Mab?  This one was really fun to write solely because a typo resulted in a running gag with Lord Adam of Crego.  Enjoy.
