Poem from the Vault: If This Was My Last Day

Long before I stepped onto WordPress, I did a personal challenge on Tumblr.  One poem a day for an entire year.  I’ve put some of them up throughout my time here, but I think I’m going to toss up more.  The downside is that I did this challenge when I was having a terrible year, so many of them are emotionally ugly and deal with hating where my life was at the time.  I had yet to hear about Amazon Kindle publishing as a viable option.  Still, I feel like putting some of them back into the world.

If this day
Was my last day
What scar would I leave
Upon the world
Or would I fade
Into a set of photos
Collecting dust
In tear stained albums
Packed into a box

Would my stories live
Beyond my notes
Finding life
When I am gone
Or would they remain
Trapped
Within their tombs
Of lined paper and cheap binding
Crumbling on a shelf

Would my collections
Of blade and book
Become heirlooms
Passed to generations
With stories told
Or would they depart
Sold or donated
To make some space
For newer toys

Would the key to legacy
Be the son
Carrier of the bloodline
Living proof
That I was here
Or is he too young
To remember his old man
A memory not yet forged
Fading before I cool

Nyx: Weapon or Woman?

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Nyx is the caster who appears in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and is the titular prodigy.  Her power is immense and she is a dangerous opponent.  Along with this is a temper that she tries to keep in check since a tantrum can take out half a village.  Many people have looked at her as a supporting character, but she’s on par with Luke Callindor.  In fact, there are times where she’s more of the main character than he is.  Her themes are rather interesting and I always hope I do them justice since one or two of them are hard to include without pushing her into ‘the crying woman’ cliche.

Building a Family

Nyx started a theme among the main characters in my book.  She began calling Luke her little brother and Sari became her little sister.  As an orphan, Nyx had her adopted parents, but she still seeks to surround herself with a makeshift family.  Possibly a fear of being alone, which hasn’t come up since nobody has an issue with this.  In fact, the other characters find it endearing and use the connections for strength.  In this way, Nyx has turned herself into the matriarch of the heroes and the one that all of them would protect above the others.  Now, she says that Sari is the heart of the group because the gypsy keeps everyone happy and smiling.  If that’s true then Nyx is the soul because her creation of a family is what helps bind these characters too each other.  I’m now realizing that this is what I’ll need to work with in the 7th book when the final champion appears and needs to phase into the team dynamic.

Weapon or Woman?

One of the biggest forces in Windemere is Gabriel the God of Destiny.  Nyx is one of his special projects and she was born to face a coming darkness.  Keep in mind that I said face and not defeat, so it’s not confirmed that she’ll win.  Anyway, with Nyx’s incredible power and this finely crafted destiny, she occasionally feels like she’s nothing more than a living weapon.  Her desire to make a family stems from this idea because a weapon wouldn’t have loved ones.  Still, she has worries about her identity and what others consider her.  I’ll admit that it isn’t an in your face issue because it’s a hard one to set off.  Her friends don’t talk her like she’s a weapon, so this is more for when Gabriel appears or another character has an unfortunate slip of the tongue.

Life After Destiny

All of the champions are destined to face a coming darkness who is named at the end of Allure of the Gypsies.  As previously stated, this doesn’t mean they’ll survive and the heroes are quick to realize this.  Nyx actually figured this out before she ever appears in the story, which she reveals is the reason she doesn’t talk about her future.  In her mind, she could be nothing more than a cow being led to slaughter.  This is a woman with the power to take out an army and she knows there’s a possibility that it might only be so she can die destroying this enemy.  You can see Luke talking about life after adventuring and Sari dreaming of wandering the roads, but Nyx requires some prompting.  Many times she’ll go along with what the others say to avoid their attempts to cheer her up.  The truth is that until a certain character shows up to fluster her, Nyx feels like a dead woman walking and has never given a thought to her life after the final battle.  This ends up being a major point for her and I’m still not sure what will happen to her when she begins dreaming of a life after destiny.

Tough for a Caster

This is a minor theme and I’m not sure how to describe it.  Some people contact me about how Nyx takes hits and keeps on fighting.  Apparently, there’s the idea that a female caster has to go down in one shot.  Luke the male warrior can carry on with broken bones, but Nyx has to collapse from a backhand?  That’s not in her character.  She’s in the fray, so it’s hard for me to rationalize her coming out unscathed or falling so easily.  This leads to a few scenes where she’s physically pounded on and she comes back with a vengeance.  One scene in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower comes to mind where she’s badly hurt and refuses to give up.  Not going to spoil that because it’s one of my favorite scenes and I know a few people who read my blog are reading this.  Anyway, I never went along with the fragile caster for Nyx, so she’s going to be taking some major beatings and possibly earn a few scars by the end of this.

Brain Hecklers

Inner Heckler–  He’s trying to write again.

Mental Heckler–  I know.  I already started in on the beer we stored by the amygdala.  It’s going to be a long couple of weeks.

Inner Heckler–  Why does he keep doing this?  It only makes him mad when he misses deadlines and deals with the others.

Mental Heckler–  Can we really call them deadlines?  They’re so arbitrary and flexible, but he kills himself trying to reach them.  So he fumbles for a day.  He has a kid to take care of after all.

Inner Heckler–  Not to mention the blogging, promoting, wife, parents, eating, showering, biking, and everything else.  I’m exhausted just thinking of everything, so I don’t get why this idiot keeps going nuts.

Mental  Heckler–  Did he just misspell a word?

Inner Heckler–  Yup.  He’ll realize it in a minute or two.  Maybe.  He’s already missed a few small words, which will embarrass him later.  I think he’s figuring it out now.

Mental Heckler–  Oh, distraction by the phone!  Guess that typo is here until the editing.

Inner Heckler–  Where’s he going?

Mental Heckler–  Probably to rummage through the fridge and cabinets for food, but not finding anything he wants to eat.

Inner Heckler–  Such an odd creature.  Did he just roll up his sleeves and roll them back down?  How many tics does this guy have?

Mental Heckler–  We’re talking about someone who has been repeatedly thinking ‘clear across the clearing’ for the last 10 minutes.  He’s one head trauma away from thinking he’s Napoleon.

Inner Heckler–  Nah, he’s definitely the Lincoln type.

Mental Heckler–  Let’s face it.  He’d think he’s a superhero or some fictional character.  The history section of his brain is stuffed with pictures of pizza.  A lot of guilt wafting from that region.

Inner Heckler–  Why does this guy have two hecklers in his head?

Mental Heckler–  That way we can work in shifts and make sure his confidence doesn’t get above a 3.  I like to let him fake it for a while before you come in for the kill.  Tricks him every time.

Inner Heckler–  Well, there’s the other guy who does a much better job.

Mental Heckler–   That’s the boss, dummy.  Looks like he finished a chapter section.  Time to knock him down for an hour.

Inner Heckler–  I’ll get some rest for my turn.  What are you going to do?

Mental Heckler–  A proud Facebook post on his author page followed by a panicky one on his personal page.  I’m trying to see what happens if I shift his gears within seconds.

Inner Heckler–  Leave some for me.  I don’t want to wake up unemployed.

Mental Heckler–  I make no promises.

Julia Burns can’t remember a day in her life when she didn’t have to work. So the ad in the paper sounds perfect to her – even if she does have to marry a complete stranger.
Nicholas Steele isn’t used to being around people since the accident that left him disfigured. Having a permanent house guest isn’t his idea of fun, however, the press would have a field day if they found he and his new wife weren’t residing together.
On paper, their ‘fake’ marriage fits both their needs, giving Nicholas a wife and Julia the security she’s always dreamed of having. In reality, every moment Nicholas and Julia spend together brings them closer to falling for each other.

Excerpt:

The thin sliver of moonlight that filled the room showed her a large shape beneath the covers and the dark hair gave her cause to believe the man was the same one she saw earlier in the library.
He thrashed against the blankets and then let out a bloodcurdling scream.
Julia rushed over, doing the only thing that she could think to do. She slid behind him and cradled the man’s head to her breastbone. “Shh, it’s alright,” she whispered, stroking her hand over his hair. It felt much softer than she imagined it would.
“Wha? Who?” The man sat up and, in a flash, pinned himself on top her. “Who the fuck are you?”
Julia couldn’t see his face in the dark but she didn’t need any light to know he was scowling at her. With her hands held high above her head and his hard, heavy body crushing her to the mattress, thighs pinning her legs where they were, a foul taste rose into her mouth. This man was just like her foster father. The feel of his body against hers evoked dread.
“Answer me!” he bellowed from above her.
“J-J-Julia B-Burns,” she stuttered through tears.
“And what the fuck are you doing in my bedroom?”
Attempting to swallow down the horrid tasting acid that rose up into her mouth like waves proved to be an exercise in futility. “I-I heard…” What had she heard?
“Well?” he demanded.
“Please, I…I need to get up.”
Only when she began dry heaving did he released her arms and move his weight from on top of her. Julia curled into herself, wracking with sobs. Her chest felt tight, stomach roiled. Memories of the past assaulted her, combined with the events of moments ago.
What possessed her to come in here? She should have just left the man alone.
“Go back to your room, Miss Burns,” he deadpanned. “We have a busy day tomorrow.”
Scrambling to her feet, Julia fled from his room and jumped back into bed. Only once she pulled the covers up to her chin in her own room did Julia realize that she just came face to face with her future husband.

Amazon Sales Rank—Why Does It Matter to Customers?

An amazing post on Amazon Sales Ranks. Not a part of this that I didn’t find interesting. Now back to watching my sales rankings feeling justified in my obsession.

chrismcmullen's avatarchrismcmullen

Rank

Obviously, sales rank is important to Amazon. It makes sense to showcase products that are more likely to sell, and those that have been selling frequently have a proven track record. Sales rank factors into bestseller lists, ordering of search results (to some extent), visibility with special features, etc.

Sales rank is also important to authors and publishers. It helps to show how the book is selling.

Perhaps the strange thing is how important sales rank is to customers.

Popularity

Do people like to buy what’s popular? Aren’t there people with their own sense of style, who want something nice of their own that few other people are enjoying? Some clothes are highly popular, yet you still see a large percentage of people who are uniquely attired.

A few times in the past five years Amazon’s sales rank has been down for several hours to a few days. Sales tend…

The Week After Goal Post Apocalypse

This is the first song I heard today and I’m thinking of putting music videos at the beginning of my goal posts.  Anyway, this is a song that I probably needed after last week, which simply didn’t go right.  I’ve been thinking of this post since Tuesday, so I’m hoping I don’t miss anything.

Two snowstorms created two snow days. No writing or relaxing was had on those days, so my vacation kind of fizzled out.  The storms also stopped Greg from visiting and there’s no clue when we can try again.  Things were pretty sucky when you add  bad sales, a few arguments over if it’s time to quit writing, a horrible driving experience, and a head cold into this week.  Hence part of my breakdown on Friday, which I tried to keep hidden from most people.  I’ve always deleted the planned posts of depressing poetry that came from darker days because that wouldn’t help anybody.

The only silver lining on the week is that I started writing Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue and got the first 2 chapters done.  Technically, I ‘finished’ 3 chapters if I’m allowed to count the fact that Nyx destroyed any chance of Chapter 2 making sense.  Anyway, I have this week to get more done and then the following week is Winter Break.  I read the calendar wrong before, so this is my last week of not having to entertain a toddler for the entire day when it’s too cold to go to the park and I can’t afford other outings.  Might spend a lot of time visiting the library, which means I’ll be hit and miss here.  At least all the posts are ready.

Speaking of posts, I’m no longer sure what I’m doing here.  I keep trying to think of interesting things to write about, but I’m running out of ideas.  I have the thought posts on parts of writing and an occasional publishing post, which go well.  The Legends of Windemere posts tend to fall flat, but that’s the name of the blog.  My poetry ability has been flaky as of late and I’m thinking of keeping that to the newly reopened Community Storyboard.  Maybe I’m trying too hard here or I’m still trying to toss off some of the remaining depression.

Goals for the week:

    1. Rest up for Winter Break and pray I can think of some things to do.
    2. Write more of Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue.
    3. If edited file received then fix up Family of the Tri-Rune and format for looming release.  Aiming for March here.
    4. Plan a few things for Hype Week of 4th book.  Suggestions would be appreciated since the one for Allure of the Gypsies didn’t do very well.  Still aiming to do a Twubs Chat, but maybe it’ll be towards me instead of the characters.
    5. Outline more of Elysium Saga.
    6. Really try to hold onto the biking schedule.  Snowstorms somehow killed that.
    7. Eat, drink, and avoid flinging things at people who annoy me.Possibly post the blurbs for

Family of the Tri-Rune

later today to get some opinions on them.  That way I can try to put the Blog Tour package together, which shouldn’t be too hard.  I’m simply going to take most of what I did before and add review quotes for

Allure of the Gypsies

and switch in the new blurbs.  Cover art is making great progress too, so maybe I’ll make a call for the Cover Reveal even if I don’t have a date.  Anybody know how to do one of those Google Forms I see everywhere?Do the one thing I’ll remember I have to do after I make this post.

Review of Retail Memories: When Customers Attack by Papi Z

CLICK FOR AMAZON SITE

CLICK FOR AMAZON SITE

This book reminded me of my time in retail, which I’m still not sure is a good thing.  There was a lot of humor in these stories that kept me smiling.  I read this book for some laughs and I got it.

It was a little awkward reading the book.  The author uses a first person perspective and the tense gets muddled when characters talk.  Since the narrator is a character in each story, he would change from the past tense of descriptive narration to the present tense of dialogue.  This jarred me a few times, but I got used to it once I figured out what was going on.

Paranoia in Self-Publishing?

I had a thought yesterday that birthed a panic attack that my dear friend Ionia had to smack me out of.  I think she rather enjoyed it a bit too much and I’m still looking for my missing contact lens, which is weird since I wear glasses.  There’s also been a phone ringing for the last 24 hours.

Seriously though, take a look at what an Indie Author has to face:

  • Negative Reviews
  • Abusive Reviews
  • Abusive e-mails, FB comments, & Tweets
  • Pressure of writing another book
  • Writer’s Block
  • Marketing failures
  • Finding marketing sites
  • Bad sales days
  • No sales days
  • Amazon rankings
  • People reacting to your rankings falling as if it’s time to pack in the dreams and head for the nearest cubicle.
  • Finding time to write
  • Editing
  • Hate sites if you get that far
  • Haters if you make a wrong move
  • Illegal downloads of your book
  • Returns of your book
  • Formatting issues
  • Friends not talking to you about your book
  • Authors who that think this is a competition and work to sabotage
  • People requesting your book for review and never getting back to you, which costs you a book.

That’s just off the top of my head, but that is a long and nasty list of obstacles.  A traditionally published author might be shielded from a lot of this by a publishing company or an agent.  I don’t believe they see the daily sales and haters are easily deflected by someone else.  There’s a sense of having more shielding from such hardships when you have this benefit.  Of course, you also make less for every sale and have less control over things, so that’s the trade-off.

Sadly, Indie Authors have the fun of being naked to all of these things.  Sure, you can ignore the sales and rankings, but curiosity gets most of us.  Many of us are working other jobs and/or have families, so constant marketing and writing the next book becomes a challenge.  It feels like one obstacle after another and a truly horrific week can do a number on an Indie Author’s confidence and sanity.  That was me last week when I kept wondering what else could possibly go wrong.  By Friday, I was about ready to crawl into a corner and cry because I simply couldn’t figure out what was going wrong.  That’s another issue for many Indie Authors.  Many of us don’t know the high and low times of the book market, so it takes time to figure out if it’s slow across the board or we screwed up somewhere.  This creates a paranoia and you’ll find yourself doing some odd things:

  • Going for every expensive marketing thing you can find.
  • Swearing you’re going to quit.
  • Deleting your book then putting it back up.
  • Fighting with a negative reviewer.
  • Search the Internet for the site that ‘must be’ spreading bad words about you.
  • Voodoo dolls.
  • Taking care of the last of the Super Bowl beer.
  • Spending time with family whether they like it or not.

So, what can an Indie Author do about this?  I’m still figuring that out, but I have ideas.  Focus entirely on the next project is one idea.  Vent in private or to a friend who is willing to listen then beat you with a chair for being an idiot.  Hunt for silver linings or just watch the movie.  It really depends on your personality and stress levels.  I used to play violent video games to get my aggression out, but that’s no longer an option since my son caught me playing God of War.  A final idea that might work is to pick a small, simple project and do it.  Get yourself a victory to overshadow the obstacles and stresses, which will also remind you that you can succeed.

So, any Indie Authors get into this paranoia state?  What did you do to get out of it or avoid it completely?
