From the Vault: Test of Man

(Again, this poem is from my angry, depressed period. I’m not really sure what I was going on about here a few years back, so I grabbed a song that might be right.)

I hear them all
Damning fellow beings
To endless suffering
As if they are the judges
The final word on morality

They claim to be the chosen
Spewing hateful sputum
At those they deem the false
Wielding words
Penned by the hand of man

Do any sense the oddness?
Aware that not long ago
Their people were the hated
Condemned by word
And killed by hand

I listen and watch
Noting the hypocrisy
That we are not to understand
The thoughts of gods
Yet we are free to voice them

It leads a man to wonder
Why so much variety
Among our simple species
No two are truly same
Even if they stand united

Would a god do such a thing?
Granting us such differences
Making each of us unique
But pairing it with a curse
A fear of those that differ

I hear people chant
About a holy test
One that we do not know
Yet so many
Claim to have the cheat sheet

What if the test holds no faith?
A test of tolerance and love
Forged by our differences
Purposely created
To see who will love and who will hate

Such a test is blasphemy
It goes against all blinding faith
Because it scares them all
For if such a test exists
Everyone will fail

Cover Chat with the author of the Legends of Windemere Series

Go take a look at my Cover Chat over on Cover Host. It’s a great blog that focuses on book covers, which many people seem to overlook.

intheAMDay's avatarCover Host

Welcome to Cover Host’s “Cover Chat” session! Today we’ll learn about the inspiration and process for Family of the Tri-Rune, book four from the Legends of Windemere series by author Charles E. Yallowitz.

Where did the inspiration for your cover come from?
The inspiration for this cover is the debuting character, Timoran Wrath. He is a barbarian, but is a wise and philosophical warrior instead of the large, stupid berserker. Jason, who does my cover art, was trying to capture that thoughtful nature while retaining the physical description. With this cover, Jason was ‘goofing off’ and made a preliminary sketch that worked perfectly for what was planned.

What was the process like choosing the perfect cover for your book?
Easy

More about the process?
Since Jason lives in California and I live in New York, all of our communication is through email. I send him a detailed description…

From the Vault: Last Time Through These Doors

Today I say good-bye
As I cross the threshold
Joined by others
Who will return tomorrow
While I remain at home

I have bid my desk adieu
Cleared it of my things
My computer has shut down
The screen a blackened face
That will never light for me again

I cannot stop the sigh
A mixture of all emotions
While I get into my car
Ready to join the exodus
For a final time

The taste is bittersweet
As I feel I have to go
To search for a softer place
And regain a sense of mind
That life has washed away

I leave behind new friends
That I will not forget
Even when the stress
Has faded from my bones
Replaced by future toils

The Home Fire is here!

New novella from Briana Vedsted goes live today!

Briana (Vedsted) Atkisson's avatarWhen I Became an Author

Drum roll please! The Home Fire is finally here! Whew! What a long road to publication this little book has had! First written nearly three years ago, it sat-alone and forgotten-for months and months before I began re-writing it. Then came the always fun editing stage, cover design, formatting, and publication date (okay, so maybe not exactly in that order).

So I am very glad I am finally finished with this book. It is a good feeling, to reach a finish line, for sure. Now, I can only pray that no mistakes will be brought to my attention, giving me reason to do any more work on this book. As much as I love each and every one of my books, I only want to have to re-write them once. Don’t get me wrong, spending time with the little bundles of joy is a wonderful thing…unless I’m editing for the…

Call to Kickstarter: The Undone #1

A friend of mine, Michael Dolce, has launched a KICKSTARTER campaign to fund his newest comic project:

The Undone

Art by Soussherpa

Rewind your life…24 Hours At A Time.
What if you could rewind time? Get a do-over whenever you wanted? Would you use your power to strike it rich on the lottery? Bet it all on the underdog to win the Super Bowl and cash in?

Of course you would…but you’d be wrong.

You’d find out the future is in constant flux and nothing happens the same twice. Your numbers are always off the second time around and instead of cashing in on that miracle catch that never happened, you’re indebted to a lot of unsavory folks looking to collect.

So what’s left to do?

The Undone #1 Page 1: Art by Soussherpa

The Undone #1 Page 1: Art by Soussherpa

Easy…you move to New York City and take your powers to the stock market. Because the global actions of movers and shakers don’t seem to vary much from day to day. And from there, you build a life, a good life, rewinding when you have to and slowly, over the course of a couple of months, building yourself up into a mover and shaker yourself.

That is…until they come calling. The Undone…a secret society of traders who have been working this angle for years, with the same abilities you thought only you possessed. And now, they’re pissed. Because nobody likes it when someone muscles in on their territory. Especially not a narcissistic, snot-nosed kid like you.

Sounds like a great story, huh?  Help Mike and his team make this happen by donating even $1 and spreading the word.  There are tons of juicy rewards to choose from.  Click on any picture or this paragraph to go to the Kickstarter page and learn more.

Ye’s Olde Magic Shoppe (On the corner of Dragon Avenue and Peacock Lane)

Yahoo Image Search (Final Fantasy Shop)

Yahoo Image Search (Final Fantasy Shop)

Welcome to Ye’s Olde Magic Shoppe!  I’m Ye, owner and former sorcerer.  So, what can I get you?  Why did I quit magic and open a shop?  I’m not legally allowed to answer that question.  So, what is young wizard like yourself looking for?

We do have a wide selection of spellbooks.  Seeing as your female, you’d want the fancy looking ones.  This one with the unicorn fighting a basilisk should work.  You want a plain one?  That’s not possible, ma’am.  Those are for male wizards only.  I’m not sexist, but that’s how the rules work.  Don’t blame me.  Take it up with the man upstairs.  I warn you that there’s a long line to see him.  Most are female warriors wanting to petition for armor that, you know, protects from damage. Either way, it’s beyond my control.

Are you wand-user, staff-user, or hand-user when it comes to casting?  Hand, but you want a wand, huh?  Well, we have an assorted of one trick wands that you can use if your own magic is lacking.  There’s your standard combat wands, a few healers, one that makes things smell like old cheese, some illusion wands that work more than half the time, and the usual odds and ends.  I do have an odd set of two wands.  You cast them at the same time.  One creates a shower of colorful lights that are harmless.  The other blinds anyone looking at you.  If you use one without the other, you’re cursed to see dancing rainbow goblins for a week.  What’s the point of them?  Ma’am, if there was a point to every magic item in the world then there would be a lot less of them.

What else are you looking for?  Magic weapons for the warrior you’re engaged to?  Well, I have a lot of those, so what does he use? Halberds are kind of rare, but I have three in stock.  A poisonous one that comes with the recipe for the antidote. One that calls lightning down to the tip.  This one keeps getting sent back to me puffing smoke and I don’t know why.  The last one is called Bloodgorger, so you know it’s powerful and unique.  It devours the blood of its victims and increases the strength of the wielder.  A slight case of vampirism will occur, but nothing that an exorcist can’t fix seventy percent of the time.  No on the magic weapons?  You’re very picky, ma’am.  Weapons tend to be cursed.

If the weapons made you nervous then you’d best stay away from the rings too.  Sorry about that.

You can wander around and look for other things.  There’s a wide variety of unique items.  We’ve got boots that cause earthquakes, invisibility armor, a stuffed groundhog that summons snow, a codpiece that probably wouldn’t interest you unless you’re that kind of woman, potions of every kind, and the list just keeps going.  Let me know if you need anything.  Oh and don’t touch the silver cauldron on the top shelf.  It’ll force you to go on a quest to avert the destruction of our world by a swarm of demons.  Why do I keep it out in the open?  It’s not out in the open.  It’s at least 6 feet off the ground on a shelf.  Are you even from this world?

Timoran Wrath: The Wise Wildman (Possible Spoilers)

Cover Art Teaser by Jason Pedersen

Cover Art Teaser by Jason Pedersen

Timoran Wrath is a new character that appears in Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune.  Now, I’m not going to do any themes here that spoil his story.  In fact, there isn’t much I can say about him.  He is a solid wall of honor, loyalty, and muscle.  Unlike Luke, Nyx, and Sari, he doesn’t cause or get into trouble.  His role ends up being keeping them out of trouble, which makes it hard to give him any conflict.  There’s still a few juicy themes behind him though.
