Got that?  Good.  Here’s my second choice of song because my first choice is being saved for next month.  I stumbled onto this by accident and I liked it:

This has been a week.  Finished editing Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and I’m still trying to start in on Allure of the Gypsies.  It’ll go quicker even though it’s longer because it was in this book that I was warned about my repetition and sought to fix it.  Mostly I’m hunting for dialogue tags that aren’t needed, which is dangerous.  I found that I might know who is talking, but damned if I’m sure a reader would.  Guess I’m still learning.  Having a chunk of the series ending fall into limbo isn’t helping me, but that’s a story for 2017 due to spoilers.

Quick question:  What do people think of me pricing Book 1 at 99 cents, Books 2-6 at $2.99, Books 3-11 at $3.99, and Books 12-15 at $4.99?  Just toying with the grand plan here.

I was delayed in starting the next project because my son was home sick on Friday.  One of those precautionary deals because he had a cold and it might have set off his first asthma episode, which was just a wheeze to me.  Either way, he’s on a nebulizer, which he loves because the mouthpiece makes his words impossible to understand.  Yet I still manage to get it right for some reason when I guess.  He’ll be back to school on Monday, but he has Thursday and Friday off.  Wife will be working and parents will be away, which means it’s just me and him.  I’ll also have to cook dinners, but that’s practice for the 3 weeks of me in charge that comes later in the year.  I REALLY want to get the editing done by then, but if it doesn’t happen then it doesn’t happen.

In regards to the THUNDERCLAP campaign, I think I’m using it for an experiment beyond marketing.  Just how useful is social media to me?  Do many of my Facebook friends even care?  Well, the answer so far is no.  I’ve had very few reactions on Facebook and only one of those was from someone that I didn’t expect.  That isn’t an insult, but I know who has my back in the writing.  I got no reactions from others and that has gone for my non-author posts too.  I think all my time promoting other authors since I had nothing worthwhile to say on Facebook has killed me there.  Even the video of my son went relatively unnoticed beyond the usual crew.  Guess I need to post about politics, religion/atheism, war, violence, sex, being vegan (I’m not), or something that will get people upset.  Seriously, that’s all I see on there and people wonder why I don’t comment.  If I want that crap, I’ll watch the news and cry.  Yeah.  This is a long rant that’s been in my head for years.

Oh!  I did finish all of the posts for October except for Halloween Week.  I plan on making a request for another MONSTER MAKER FUN event.  This means I’ll be requesting nonsense words to transform into creatures.  If this falls through then I’ll just be doing a week of music videos and mope in the corner . .  . with a bag of Snickers.

Here’s the tentative goals:

  1. Start editing Allure of the Gypsies.
  2. Help son on homework.
  3. Cook Meatball Grinders one night and Savory Lemon Chicken the other while wrangling the child.
  4. Get back to biking because little guy being home derailed that for a day.
  5. Watch Captain America: Winter Solider.  I own it and I watched it twice in theaters.
  6. Think more about Child of the Hunt and other W.I.P.
  7. Figure out what adventure to go on with the child.  Sadly, he needs to take his medicine every 4 hours until Thursday and Friday is going to be the follow up appointment.  Might just be a trip to the playground or the mall depending on the weather.

Book Promo

Pamela Beckford's avatarPoetry by Pamela

Time for the obligatory book promotion. If everyone would just buy one or more of my books and tell their friends to buy them, I wouldn’t have to bore you all with my self-promotion again. All of my books are only $.99 on Kindle or $7.19 in paperback. Dreams of Love and Love: Lost and Found are chock full of poems of love. They tell the story of new, deep and abiding love. They also tell the story of an unrequited love and a forbidden love.

Poetry for those who don’t normally read poetry. These poems follow many different poetry forms (don’t worry the forms are listed in the back to help out the readers). My poems are short and heartfelt. They are filled with deep emotions that will bring out the love in your hearts.

My book trailer also tells a bit about the books http://voice.adobe.com/v/USjFF45ByPZ

Hunted Hero on the Run

Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack

This type of hero is embedded in a specific story.  He or she is hunted by the enemies for some reason.  They are either constantly moving from one adventure to another or struggling to stay hidden.  Tension and suspense are important attributes to this protagonist because you always need to keep the threat of being permanently caught over their head until the finale.  I guess you can have them get temporarily caught once or twice, but you can only use this trick so many times before it gets stale.

What are some ideas when your hero is hunted?

  1. No matter how strong they are, you need their enemies to be stronger in some fashion.  This can be physical or mental.  If they’re already powerful enough to win then they have no solid reason to be on the run.  You can go with lack of confidence, fear, or something internal, but they can go for only so long.  If you want to have an extended story then you need your hero to evolve into someone powerful enough to face his pursuers.
  2. Give them something that acts as a symbol of hope.  A weapon, piece of information, or a location that will end their life on the run.  This creates more of a story instead of simply running from one encounter to another.  An alternative here is to make them on the run because they have this item already.  Maybe they’re looking for a way to use whatever is wanted or destroy it.
  3. Allies can be very important to this hero.  Deep relationships are a danger to him/her, but that doesn’t mean other characters can’t be involved.  Some people might try to help whether they’re wanted or not.  Others might be single scene/chapter appearances to carry the hero along.  Some of these characters can meet lethal ends because of their associations, which will throw some guilt into the hero’s life.  There is also the possibility of creating an enemy of the main enemy who steps in to go on the run with the main hero.
  4. Try not to mix up escaping for survival for cowardice.  The hero can fight back at first and defeat smaller threats before continuing on.  If you have him/her run from every fight then it becomes doubtful that they will ever step up to the main threat.  Even if it’s verbal standing up for themselves, there should be a spine on this character.  After all, they’ll need to have some level of courage to continue traveling instead of giving up.
  5. I mentioned that the reason can be anything, which is true.  Save a loved one, destroy an enemy, discover a treasure, a prophetic destroyer, and the list keeps going.  Even though it can be anything, try to put some thought into the reason.  This is what drives both the hero and the villain, so it should have some depth.  I recommend writing about the ‘target’ from the perspective of the hero and the villain before starting the actual story.

So, what do you think about hunted heroes?  Any favorites?

99 Cents or Free Books Today

jorobinson176's avatarJo Robinson

There’s a massive short on a power line up the road, and the lights are making like a disco here, so I’m guessing that the power is going to go out for a bit when someone comes to fix it. If they don’t come soon something’s going to go bang – it’s already making some creepy loud noises. So before I disappear – or get righteously zapped, I want to share my little promotion. I’ve decided to have a sale on my scribbles at Amazon only. My two short stories will be free from today till the 24th and Shadow People and African Me & Satellite TV are on sale at 99 cents for now. The links are under the cover pics just in case anyone feels like splurging.

Career Hero: For the Glory and Money

Boost Gold from DC Comics

Booster Gold from DC Comics

Booster Gold is a character who didn’t step into being a hero to help others or save the world.  He traveled from the future to use his higher tech and past event knowledge to gain fame and glory.  I got into him later when he took a central role in ’52’ and he was given an episode of Justice League Unlimited.  Something about his cockiness was refreshing after seeing dour vigilantes, noble heroes, and all other types of heroes that you find all over comics.  This reminded me a lot of Luke Callindor in my books who sets off to be a hero to prove that can do it.  There’s an interesting evolution with these self-centered characters who are still trying to do good.  They either break and give up or become true heroes that do it for good.  They can even become villains too.

So, what can you do with such a character and what are some aspects?

  1. Give them an ego.  You really need to be full of yourself at some level to be a hero solely for the fame.  Everything this character does is about image and they will be defensive if that image is threatened.  You can have them fight another hero who publicly calls them out, accept any challenge from a villain, or do whatever you think an egomaniac would do.  Yet, you always have to remember that they’ll try to save lives and protect others.  So don’t go callous with them because that makes them more of a villain.
  2. Cheating and setting up heroic encounters is perfectly legal for these characters.  They will do whatever it takes to be seen as the hero.  This can include hiring their own villain for a public display, stealing credit from someone else, and lying to be given a chance at something.  Again, these have to be minor infractions instead of something like kidnapping an innocent to save them.  Many times this will backfire and cause this type of hero to retire for a time.
  3. Demonstrate how their success or failure affects their personal life.  Do they make friends among other heroes even with their selfish reasons?  Will they leave friends behind when they make it big or drive them away when they fail?  This is what comes from having a character driven by ego alone.  They will gloat in some fashion, which is another problem if they try for a secret identity.  Honestly, I don’t see that working out too well.
  4. DO NOT make them useless if you want this hero to be taken seriously by the public.  If you want their story to show them reaching their goal of fame or at least be seen as a real hero then they need to be capable.  Even if it’s a glimmer of what they may be really capable of, give it to them.  Otherwise, you get a hero that is nothing more than a joke and any praise that they get for greatness will seem out of place.  For example, the hero has some technological toys or minor spells that they use to some effectiveness to get positive media attention.
  5. Include the media in this story such as interviews, articles, public response to him/her, and whatever else celebrities get.  Remember that this hero is trying to be a celebrity instead of a world saver.
  6. Aim for an evolution of some kind to keep the reader interested.  An egomaniac that remains an egomaniac for an entire story can feel like it’s lost something.  Even if they keep that persona, there should be something that changes like with all characters. An evolution of these characters is where a solitary loved one or item can come in handy.  Have them killed, injured, or harmed in some way to shock the hero to the realization that being a hero is no game.  After all, a big part of these characters is that they see being a hero as a game unlike the more serious heroes.  So shocking them out of that realization will force them into a new role.  Still, you can always have them keep the old persona as an emotional shield.

So, anybody have a favorite egomaniac hero?

Be a dear support a fantasy author

Greatest promo I have ever seen for my books. Thank you, Ionia.

Ionia Froment's avatarreadful things blog

There once was an author

from and island so long

I made his acquaintance

and he sang me a song

“For I am but a poor fantasy scribe

give me a chance and I’ll write you a line

Dragons and wizards and paladins too

Just stay here a moment, I’ll entertain you.”

So I sat for  while and listened to his words

fabulous yarns such as I’d never heard

just one problem at the end of his tale

I was a pauper, so he did not make a sale

I looked him over and said with a frown

I might not be rich but I can spread word about town

then the sky opened up,

with a big THUNDERCLAP

I looked above me and I said:

“Well, crap.”

Still, I knew I would not be deterred

these were the best stories I’d ever heard

So I went past the houses…

The Compass Key Excerpt: Wrong Move (Possible Spoilers)

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

A chorus of guttural laughter is heard before a fist bursts through the wall, striking Delvin’s shield and sending him flying across the room. The attacker screams as her arm turns to ice and shatters up to the shoulder. A tall vampire with blonde hair walks into the room and holds out his hand to stop the others from entering. He grins at the look of fear in Nyx’s eyes and makes a sudden movement, enjoying the sight of her jumping away. The Dawn Fang claps his hands and moves to let his friends join him. The last vampire to enter the room is an Elven woman, who is touching her shoulder where her arm used to be.

“What kind of idiots attract vampires?” the blonde man says, eying Nyx and licking his lips.

“Very dangerous people,” Delvin proudly declares.

“More like people that want to die,” the vampire snaps, flexing his long fingers. Horns grow out of his head and his skin turns red. “I’m tired of this place. Too many of my friends have died here.”

Nyx creates a wall of fire in front of her and prepares for an attack. “Guess Kernaghan didn’t pay you enough.”

“No idea who you’re talking about,” the grinning Dawn Fang claims as he finishes turning into a towering minotaur. He scratches the stone floor with his hooves in an attempt to intimidate the caster. “We were hired by a guy named Stephen. Said he knew the progenitor, which should have been a sign that he couldn’t be trusted.”

“Don’t you hate it when evil employers throw you into the abyss?” Nyx asks. She gestures to her companion, but the Dawn Fangs fan out around the room to surround them. “Where is Stephen anyway?”

The vampire’s anger rises until he snorts and punches the ground hard enough to embed flecks of stone in his knuckles. “The bastard decided that a drite was more important than taking over this mountain. I couldn’t believe it since he wouldn’t shut up about this place for days. Then again, he did mention a drite when he was describing his enemies. I forgot what he said about the critter.”

“He wanted to play with it,” a scrawny calico says, her hairless tail splitting into three whips. “Though his version of play was torture. Wanted to shred the drite’s wings and pick its scales off one by one. Stephen is a sick creature even by our standards.”

“As long as he pays,” the minotaur vampire says with a smirk to his friend. A sudden wave of heat brings his attention back to the caster. “What the hell?”

Nyx is bathed in roiling fire, her violet eyes shining like twin stars that bore into the vampire’s soul. The wall of flame vanishes when she steps forward and reaches toward the large beast. She laughs as the Dawn Fang snorts and bends down to gore her. She lets him get as far as lifting his foot before she snares him with a large hand of flame. Her face is a mask of murderous rage as she pulls the screaming monster closer.

“I don’t have time for any of you,” she hisses in a voice that crackles like a bonfire.
