Core of the Champions: Nyx

Nyx is a powerful sorceress and her love of fire shows that she used to simply be called the ‘Fire Hero’.  Wasn’t really sure how this worked in the game because she didn’t learn any fire magic until a year of playing had passed.  It takes a while to get to those spells, but book Nyx never had that problem.  She’s a special kind of caster and her biggest problem is holding back instead of mustering up enough power to fight.  This turned him into the ‘Power Hero’, but that still didn’t work out very well.  So, what has Nyx become in the final incarnation?

Well, I stopped titling heroes, which made it easier.  Focusing solely on the core virtue/emotion helped and it became clear what Nyx was.  She is very defiant and has a strong will, which has been apparent since the beginning.  Like Luke, she rarely backs down from a fight.  The difference is that while Luke will leap with a mental focus on helping others, Nyx enters a fight as if she has to prove herself.  Think about a lot of her big battles in the series.  Trinity, Kalam, the Krypters, and Stephen all put her in a position where she had to prove she was stronger.  There have been several times where she has been put in a position where her magic surges in an act of defiance or willpower such as when the Lich got his hands on her.

There is the opposite side of the coin too.  I mentioned yesterday that powers can wane when the core virtue is damaged.  Think about Nyx and the goblin swarm.  It is established that casters can lose their magic after a trauma like what happened to Nyx.  Still, there were a few odd instances.  She could get sparks at times, which meant her aura was still active.  There was something else blocking her from accessing it.  That would be that she lost a lot of her defiant spirit until she was put in the position where she had to save Luke from the brink of death.  This weakness of the champions does act as a nasty crutch for Nyx and might even give Trinity the advantage in their feud.  It might be one of the few checks that I have on Nyx’s power beyond her difficulty with seeing illusions.

Oh and for anyone thinking this is the big secret behind Nyx’s magic . . . it isn’t.  There’s more to her than she realizes and The Compass Key starts that path.

The Future of Legends of Windemere

So after seeing responses to last night’s post about cutting back on blogging and not knowing what to put on here.  Most people wanted me to talk about myself, which might take a little time.  The main reason is because I’m a dull individual outside of my writing.  Here’s my weekday:

  1. Wake up.
  2. Get son ready for school.
  3. Get son on bus.
  4. Finish Internet stuff.
  5. Maybe bike.
  6. Shower.
  7. Maybe errands that I try to walk to.
  8. Writing, editing, and maintaining Internet stuff.
  9. Son comes home for homework.
  10. Play with son until shower time.
  11. Finish writing, editing, or whatever until sleep.
  12. Repeat in morning.

Doesn’t sound very interesting and weekends tend to include me trying desperately to get away from the house.  I guess what trips me up is that I don’t really know how to present myself here.  The writing is a core piece of my personality even outside of the computer.  I can get into discussions about movies and TV, but that’s usually a back-and-forth.  Again, I think I’m really dull and boring here.  So I’m going to have to try and I’ll start personal posts up in November.  A lot of it might end up being from my past when I actually had some kind of life.  Anything current will probably be a spontaneous post.

So here is what I’m thinking:

  • Monday- Post about myself with a story or something that happened over the weekend.
  • Wednesday-  Some aspect of writing because I do need to be an author at some point on here.
  • Friday-  A fictional skit like my character’s chatting or a scenario like the Olde Shoppe things that at least I enjoy writing.
  • Saturday-  Goal post.

This means the Works in Progress will be going away unless I need feedback.  Character interviews and origins will go away unless someone requests them.  To be fair, I only have one major player in Legends of Windemere left to do an origin post for and that one hasn’t debuted yet.  The focus might end up being more on trying to make myself believe I’m interesting and ignoring the real-world results of talking about myself.

Keep in mind this will be in the future.  October has already been set up to some extent, but I am hoping to do another ‘Monster Maker Fun’ week for Halloween.  I’d drop down to the 4 times a week in November, but dammit I want my 2 years of unbroken posting.

Guess I’ll post life events if anything turns up.

Core of the Champions: Luke Callindor

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen CLICK COVER FOR AMAZON SITE

Back at the beginning, the ‘Champions of Windemere’ were based around the elements.  It still holds true to some extent with many of their abilities being based around this idea.  It is even mentioned that the prophecy is so old that it was made during a time where such a theme was the norm.  Yet, I started seeing how there was something else to each character as I wrote the story.  There was a core virtue/emotion to each hero, which ends up being more important than people realize at first.  In fact, I started seeing how their abilities would be only as strong as this core.  I’m going to do some small explorations this week on the 5 active champions and this concept.  I can’t use the 6th champion because he/she hasn’t made a real appearance yet.

Luke Callindor is the easiest character to figure out because he’s pretty straightforward. This is also why I can use his post to explain the overall concept before the more detailed champions get a turn.  He is a reckless swordsman who will face every challenge to become a hero.  His core has always been his courage.  Even when outmatched, Luke refuses to back down even if he knows it’s smarter to do so.  This is especially true when someone is in trouble, which turns his bravery into a weapon.  His enemies can use this against him, but there is always that risk that he’ll do something dangerously unpredictable.  For example, his tactics in his first encounter with the Lich that nearly got him killed.

You might be wondering what this has to do with his powers.  Well, Luke is strongest when he’s brave.  His prowess, speed, and overall abilities increase when his courage is high, which is part of the champion prophecy.  Unfortunately, this isn’t a part that is known by the heroes and I’m still working on how they’re going to figure it out.  Anyway, the villains know this little fact and it is why there is a lot of mental warfare on the part of characters like Stephen and the Baron.  In regards to Luke, there is a push to make him doubt his own bravery and feel like he’s incapable of defending others.  This weakens him and increases the risk of failure and death.  Again, Luke is rather straightforward, but I’m not sure if he’s the easiest or hardest champion to derail.

Week 5: The Dark Choir Series
Book One: The Curse Merchant
By J.P. Sloan

Dorian Lake spent years cornering the Baltimore hex-crafting market, using his skills at the hermetic arts to exact karmic justice for those whom the system has failed. He keeps his magic clean and free of soul-corrupting Netherwork, thus avoiding both the karmic blow-back of his practice and the notice of the Presidium, a powerful cabal of practitioners that polices the esoteric arts in America. However, when an unscrupulous Netherworker interferes with both his business and his personal life, Dorian’s disarming charisma and hermetic savvy may not be enough to keep his soul out of jeopardy.

His rival, a soul monger named Neil Osterhaus, wouldn’t be such a problem were it not for Carmen, Dorian’s captivating ex-lover. After two years’ absence Carmen arrives at Dorian’s doorstep with a problem: she sold her soul to Osterhaus, and has only two weeks to buy it back. Hoping to win back Carmen’s affections, Dorian must find a replacement soul without tainting his own. As Dorian descends into the shadows of Baltimore’s underworld, he must decide how low he is willing to stoop in order to save Carmen from eternal damnation… with the Presidium watching, waiting for him to cross the line.

Been Doing Some Thinking

Homer Simpson

Homer Simpson

So I’ve been doing some thinking about the future of this blog.  It’s the hub of my social media activity and where I share my thoughts, W.I.P., and other things.  It’s also becoming hard to maintain because the payoff seems to be dwindling.  I don’t pay attention to my blog stats, so that isn’t it.  I mean comments and overall interactions here.  I get some back-and-forth, but not much and I’m posting every day.

And that might be the problem.  Maybe I did too much.  I’m running out of weekly topics and I’m just so burnt out here.  I do thank my usual comment leavers and those who show up from time to time.  That’s a big reason why I’m not closing up shop.  There are some people paying attention.  I’m simply going to dial it back in January.  Here is the plan that I’m considering:

  1. Post Sunday Goals, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  I need some schedule to avoid forgetting this place entirely.
  2. Save full week of posting for Hype Weeks or any other special events.
  3. Post more non-blog stuff on my Facebook Author page to keep it active.
  4. Retire Character Interviews because those get nowhere.  Check other recurring post types to see if they have any traction.
  5. Leave opening for posting on a whim.
  6. Continue reblogging at the same rate to help others.

This means I’ll have made it 2 years without missing a day of posting, but I guess I couldn’t keep it up forever.  I was bound to run out of things to say.  I’ll admit that I’m having a hard time letting go because this place is my main source of social interaction.  I chat with a few people on Facebook, but that’s really it.  Hopefully this doesn’t hurt my books, but I really think it’s come down to me toning it down.  Only reason I’m letting it go for the rest of the year is because I have all the October posts prepped, I have enough topics to cover November, and December MIGHT be a debut month.

Guess that’s it.  Business as usual for now . . . Guess I’ll see if I hold to this or something changes my mind.
