War of Nytefall Interviews- Clyde and Mab: Partners in Crime and Life #vampires #fantasy

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Every Monday in October, I’m going to present two characters from War of Nytefall to answer questions in the comments.  Hopefully, this gets a lot of responses and we have some fun.  To check out the books in this series, here are the links:

  1. War of Nytefall: Loyalty
  2. War of Nytefall: Lost
  3. War of Nytefall: Rivalry

Starting everything off is the duo of Clyde and Mab.  He is the progenitor of the Dawn Fangs, which are powerful vampires that can retain their powers in the sun.  They also have heartbeats.  This happened due to Clyde being executed by sun beams just as the Great Cataclysm struck, which transformed him.  He was buried for 50 years before he was helped out and discovered his changes.  After a betrayal, he created his own kingdom of Nytefall and declared war on the old-world vampires.  Clyde is fairly violent and fears succumbing to the monster that lurks in his soul.  Prior to all of this, he was a vampiric thief who ran a very infamous gang alongside . . .

Mab (Winthrop, but she hates her last name) is Clyde’s partner and the one who never lost faith in him surviving the Great Cataclysm.  She is the first one he turned from an old-world vampire into a Dawn Fang.  Although, it was an accident.  Her powers are more thief-like than Clyde’s illusions and monstrous strength.  She can enter shadows and travel through a side dimension to come out of another shadow.  Her other powers are speaking with the dead and growing claws, which makes her a great stealth operative.  (By the way, Mab shows up in 3 of the 4 interviews this month.)

The relationship between Clyde and Mab has been difficulty, especially since it spans more than a century.  They began a short rivalry as thieves, but they swiftly joined forces after Clyde stole a corn-shaped necklace on a dare from Mab.  For a while, they were a duo until Mab’s brother joined them along with some friends to add mercenary work to what was now becoming a gang.  Many other vampires joined, including Chastity who specialized in blackmail.  Eventually, Clyde and Mab became lovers, which lasted for a while until a misunderstanding led Chastity to believe she had permission to seduce Clyde in the form of Mab.  They were caught and the relationship ended, but the partnership remained since they agreed they made a good team.  The spark was still there, which is why Mab never lost faith in Clyde’s survival.

Now, the two of them are seen as the leaders of the Dawn Fangs even though they are only partners.  Well, they may have become something more, but Mab isn’t big on forgiveness and Clyde has other things on his mind.  So, ask whatever questions you want and see what they say.  Have fun.

Time for More Completed Puzzles . . . Well, I Have to Be Proud of Something Creative

I feel like I might have shown some of these before because I’m surprised I’ve finished 10 since the last one.  Sorry if that’s the case.  I’ve got 17 puzzles sitting in my ‘To Do’ pile as well.  Having trouble finding new ones in stores, so I might be slowing down.  Especially since I’m just gluing them and piling them up in the basement.  Don’t have any way to display them, which is a shame.

I showed a picture of this before, but this is the finished one.

Big Sale for War of Nytefall

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Charles is holding a big sale for the month of October. This is for his fantasy vampire series, so you can see the Halloween theme behind it all. This is a great opportunity to jump onboard.

War of Nytefall (CLICK ON IMAGE FOR AMAZON SITE)

For the month of October, all three War of Nytefall books will be available for 99 cents each.

I’ll be posting about this once a week and keeping up a pinned Tweet for the entire month, which is really it for promotions.  If anyone wants to host a simple promo post or copy/paste the above then let me know.  I can put some posts together for people, but I really can’t do anything complicated due to time restraints.  We can discuss things in the comments if you want to help.

There’s an ulterior motive here as well, which is why this isn’t working exactly…

Goal Post: Fasting on the Horizon (Don’t Forget ‘War of Nytefall’ Sale)

First, War of Nytefall is on sale for the month of October.  All 3 books have gone down to 99 cents.  If the response is good then I might keep it longer or even make Legends of Windemere 99 cents across the board.  So far, I’ve seen a small blip and I’m not going to do more than mention it on social media.  Pick up copies or mention it to people who are looking for some vampire fun.

This was an odd week because it was a 4-day weekend and then 3 days of work.  So, I spent more time with my son than at school.  The trade-off is that he’s with his mom for the next 2 weekends.  I made sure to do a lot of fun things for him.  I’ll just do the day by day to make things easy:

  • Saturday–  We went to see ‘Abominable’ in theaters.  This was a great movie and I think I prefer Dreamworks animations to all others.  Fun story, memorable characters, great action/effects, and genuine tear-jerking moments.  Nothing feels forced here.  After that, we played Super Smash Brothers Ultimate to relax for the day.
  • Sunday– Went to see ‘Lion King’ on Broadway with my parents.  My son had a blast and this means he’s seen all the Disney shows.  Now, he says he has no reason to go back to Broadway.  We’ll see what happens there.  The show was amazing even though the story didn’t have the same action as ‘Aladdin’ or set pieces as ‘Frozen’.  ‘Lion King’ wins in terms of costumes and the actors including animal actions in their movements.  The lion actors do kind of move like you would expect a lion to.  The combination of puppetry and costumes helped immensely with this.  Seeing the elephant (pretty close, if not exactly, full sized) come up the stairs out of the audience area was surprising.  I knew they were dressed like animals, but this was something else.  My son got a little antsy in the second act because it’s the longest of the 3 plays, but he made it to the end then devoured his dinner when we got back to Long Island.
  • Monday–  This was a resting day because I promised LEGO Harry Potter time.  I needed to do laundry too.  We watched ‘Teen Titans Go to the Movies’, which was okay.  I heard it was better than the episodes, but I guess that isn’t saying much in terms of story and characterization.  At least my son enjoyed it, but he went right back to the more serious original series by dinner time.
  • Tuesday– The last day of the 4-day weekend was at the zoo.  We saw a lot of the animals and even got onto the monorail without having to wait.  Not much else can be said other than it was a fun day.  It left me tired for the work days, but we haven’t been to the zoo since the Spring.

I can’t really say anything about work since I don’t want to share the lives of my students on here.  Next week is Yom Kippur, which is on Wednesday.  That means I’ll be off on that day and not eating.  I think I have another Windemere Monster post ready to go, but I’m going to be a rarity until that evening.  My son is going to be home and he’s hard to keep up with when I’m starving.  Might just toss ‘Symphony of the Night’ into the PS2 and play that.  I don’t have many other games and the Nintendo Switch is my son’s, so I can only do those with him.  I wish I still had ‘Prince of Persia: Sands of Time’, but that went with the ex-wife.  Offered her a trade, but she didn’t agree.  Before anyone suggests it, I’ve tried writing during Yom Kippur and that’s always a mistake.  I’m too used to eating and drinking while working, so it doesn’t work as a distraction.

My plan for this weekend is to do a few more of the Tuesday profiles for Legends of Windemere today.  I will go back to the War of Nytefall: Ravenous outline tonight and tomorrow.  My hope is to finish it up and start writing next weekend.  It’s difficult because I did a 75% rewrite.  A big part is that I gave a character a drug addiction and I’m still not sure how that is going to work out.  In fact, I paused at the point where I had them do something big.  I have a haircut appointment in 30 minutes, so I’ll be thinking about it once I get home.  Once I finish the outline, I plan on either finishing more of the profile posts are tinkering with the fantasy tip book.  Contrary to what I thought, I haven’t had any time during school to look at it.  Weird since I have a free and lunch period, but I socialize at those times.

Goals of the week?

  1. Do more of the Legends of Windemere profiles.
  2. Complete War of Nytefall: Ravenous outline
  3. Yom Kippur survival.
  4. Fantasy tip book tinkering.
  5. Willy Wonka puzzle.
  6. Various appointments.
  7. Probably should do laundry.
  8. Really try to do the biking more often.
  9. Watch more ‘Disenchantment’.  Not bad, but I like ‘Futurama’ more.

Resurrection of Monster Maker Fun 2019: Creatures Donated by The Storyreading Ape and C.S. Boyack #October #monsters

Stein’s Lab in Soul Eater

I know we forgot last year, but the Monster Maker is back for 2019.  Every Friday in October, we’ll see what creatures have been forged with the help of those volunteers who gave me the names.  Enjoy the fun.

The following three creatures have been donated by Chris the Story Reading Ape:

Bantersnipe

These creatures are found in the confectionery forests outside of the village of Cantawolster.  The locals harvest the naturally growing treats for food and selling in the stores, so they are in competition with the Bantersnipes, which only eat things that are high in sugar.  They are large heads with wide eyes and a sack-like body that is really nothing more than a stomach.  With no limbs, they move around using seven prehensile hairs that allow them to swing through the branches.  On the ground, they are helpless against predators, which includes humans who may cut a Bantersnipe open to get at a special candy that is formed in their bodies. This is not a common practice since these creatures have close knit families and will avenge a murdered member by coaxing children into the forest. After feeding a child enough sweets, the Bantersnipes will devour them. This is why humans only harvest ones that they find dead on the ground or use dogs that the beasts don’t realize are working for the village.

Groanyhorn

Thriving in the bowl-shaped hills of Jagarune, these fleet-footed beasts get their name from two things.  One is the flat horn that the females have and the edged one of the males.  The other is the noise them make during mating seasons.  Unlike other antelope where the stags battle, the Groanyhorns have a different ritual that involves the clashing of horns.  Males and females gather to charge each other and the noise made from the edged and flat horns moving against each other is reminiscent of a human groan.  Each sound is slightly different and these animals continue until they find a mate who helps them make the perfect pitch.  Aside from the horns, they are slender with four legs and a spinning tail that helps them get a boost if they try to run up the steeper sections of their environment.

Kaleidopus

As one would expect, this is a very colorful animal, but only when it wants to be.  Hiding in the deepest depths of the ocean, the Kaleidopus spends most of its time gray or black.  It is a crustacean that has no pincers and only three spindly legs to help it move around. A thick slime is on its shell, which is too soft to give it much protection.  Instead, it opens up to reveal a prismatic inside that has absorbed sunlight.  This unleashes a stunning display of colors that will scare away predators and shock prey long enough for them to be swallowed whole.  It is unclear how these deep sea creatures get the sunlight, but scientists have never found an immature specimen.  All that has been found are adults, which is why they believe that juveniles resemble clams or mussels.  They hide among these other animals in the shallows and spend years absorbing enough sunlight before returning to the depths to grow into an adult and breed.

The next three creatures have been donated by C.S. Boyack:

Gullet Snipe

A distant relative of the Bantersnipe, these creatures is allergic to sweet foods and live far away from human civilization.  They can be found in the deepest part of most jungles, but are hard to identify.  Their skin is colored to make them blend perfectly into their surroundings while they move in search of food.  Pictures have shown that it is a pillow-shaped torso with its face on the underbelly.  Being the size of a spider monkey and having extendable hooks at each corner, it can stay still to resemble a seed pod.  Unlike their cousins, the Gullet Snipe is entirely carnivorous, but it does not eat the meat of the animals it attacks.  Instead, it projects a straw-like organ from its mouth that delivers a paralytic.  With its prey stunned, the creature drains the bile and stomach acid. There have been many cases of it leaving enough for its victim to survive, so it is believed a Gullet Snipe might have a collection of animals that it regularly feeds on.

Butterfume

Found on within the rocky land of Marson, this is a fungus that gives off a foul odor to ward off most predators.  To specific species, it has the scent of buttered popcorn that becomes more potent after a rainstorm. It resembles a puddle of yellowish liquid that is sticky if anyone touches it.  The residue that remains on the skin are spores that are dormant and wake up when mixed with water.  They do not leave the skin and will coat the entire body of its host without killing it.  The Butterfume will take control of the other organism and have it travel to what it deems a safe place.  Once there, it sloughs off and pares itself down to a smaller size.  The pieces that are discarded will harden and can be boiled down to make a rich caramel-like coating for ice cream.  Many people in the area believe it is a blessing to be taken over by a Buttefume because of what they can collect afterwards.

Gravedigger

This strange undead creature is not a threat to humans.  It is scary with its hulking form, maggot-infested wounds, and a head that resembles a boulder with eyes.  Carrying a large shovel, it wanders the world following spirits that call out for help.  The problem is that they are either buried in the wrong place or have some other issue with their final resting place.  The Gravedigger has also been known to collect abandoned bodies and bring them to where they want to be laid to rest.  It digs perfect graves and carries a large sack with blank tombstones that he can carve on with his sharp, agile fingers.  If approached by a living human, it will walk away and always manage to be ahead of any pursuers even though it never increases its speed.

Derailing Bedlam: Day of the Landlubbers Part 2 #fiction #adventure

As usual, here is your warning that this story has cursing, sex (not graphic), innuendo, and violence.  It’s my Rated-R action adventure called Derailing Bedlam.  This is the fourth outing (third official) for Cassidy and Lloyd, so feel free to click on one of the two covers to see how it started.  Each one is 99 cents!

Windemere Monsters: Oakind #fantasy #adventure

Ent

Here we are with the first of the Windemere monsters.  I think we’ll all recognize these creatures, which I call Oakind.  They are also Ents or Treants, which are the sentient trees found throughout fantasy.  Walking and talking as they travel the wilderness or stay in one place for a long nap.  Now, what did I do different with the Oakind?

Not much on the surface.  I couldn’t change a lot since they were supposed to be giant trees that could move if they felt like it.  If they are standing still or sleeping then they resemble a forest.  Oakind are always in groups, so you rarely run into a solitary one unless they escaped a massacre.  Unlike Treebeard of LOTR (Beat you to it, people!), these monsters aren’t wise protectors of nature.  They can be fairly territorial and simple-minded.  For example, the ones that Sari and Kira Grason ran into in Ritual of the Lost Lamb were upset that they were taking herbs from their branches.  They had a sense of property and didn’t want to give them up.  This resulted in a strange ritual that they had to perform, which brings me to the big and only change I really did.

Sari and Kira are forced to fight each other after drinking a potion, which has them hemorrhage a sweet blood whenever they are struck.  It’s to saturate the ground and give nourishment to the Oakind.  Yeah, these walking trees can get food without this, but they crave the crimson serum of the living.  It’s very much like a vampire and I never made the connection until I wrote War of Nytefall: Loyalty.  In this, Clyde and his friends run into a strange grove of trees in the middle of a desert.  Turns out, these are Oakind that have been turned into vampires, which had been unheard of.  Even though they were destroyed, their seeds were spread and the desire for blood gradually became etched in the DNA of those found on Ralian.  The Oakind of other continents don’t eat this, but they have other names since they are different tree types.

Really wish there was a big story behind their creation.  I simply waited for a point where I could use sentient trees and then ran with it.  My notes were funny though.  I had marked down a ritual that involved fighting, but no reason why the Oakind would care.  It was a final chance to get Sari and Kira to fight, which wasn’t enough.  I had them take a potion on a whim and then . . . blech.  No idea where I was going with it when I started, but that’s how it went.  I’d actually forgotten about it when I had the Oakind return in my vampire series.  Again, I had no notes beyond wanting a strange, big threat for Clyde to be faced with.  Put the forest in the desert and considered having a beast hiding in there, but that didn’t work.  Just had the trees start attacking when the moment was right.  One could say the Dawn Fangs’ confusion at there being vampiric Oakind was genuine because I didn’t expect it either.
