New Release: Eternal Road by John W. Howell #thriller #ghosts

Take a step on the Eternal Road!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog, Charles, and thank you for helping me launch this book. I know you are busy preparing a launch of your own, so I am grateful to be here. Speaking of the book, let me describe it. Eternal Road is the story of two people finding their way through the selection process leading to the place where one will spend eternity. Yes, it is true. They both have passed away. James Wainwright just died in an auto accident. Samantha Tourneau died seventeen years before. Sam is James’s guide to help him decide where to spend eternity. This is not your usual thriller or paranormal romance. It is a piece of fiction that is a combination of inspiration, adventure, time travel, sci-fi, a touch of erotica, and a dash of spiritual. In short, it is a lot of things, but hopefully, a story that will make you happy to have read it.

It is now available on Amazon in paper and Kindle. The Kindle edition is introductory priced at 99¢ until October 15th

The blurb

James Wainwright picks up a hitchhiker and discovers two things 1. The woman he picks up is his childhood sweetheart, only Seventeen years older. 2. He is no longer of this world.

James began a road trip alone in his 1956 Oldsmobile. He stops for a hitchhiker only to discover she is his childhood sweetheart, Sam, who disappeared seventeen years before. James learns from Sam falling asleep miles back caused him to perish in a one-car accident. He also comes to understand that Sam was taken and murdered all those years ago, and now she has come back to help him find his eternal home.

The pair visit a number of times and places and are witness to a number of historical events. The rules dictate that they do no harm to the time continuum. Trying to be careful, they inadvertently come to the attention of Lucifer, who would love to have their souls as his subjects. They also find a threat to human survival and desperately need to put in place the fix necessary to save humankind.

The question becomes, will James find his eternal home in grace or lose the battle with Satan for his immortal soul and the future of human life with it? If you like time-travel, adventure, mystery, justice, and the supernatural, this story is for you.

An Excerpt

Through the gloom, he makes out a long bar on the other side of the room. When his eyes become accustomed to the low light level, he notices lamps hanging from the ceiling, which give off a smell that he doesn’t recognize. One or two near the bar are lit, and a thin layer of smoke hovers near the ceiling.

“Over here,” Sam calls. She stands at the bar with one foot up on a brass rail. The bartender has a wrinkled forehead and doesn’t look pleased, so James decides he better get over there and clear up any misunderstanding.

“Everything okay?” James looks first to the bartender and then to Sam.

“I was just telling the lady that women aren’t allowed at the bar. Just not ladylike, and the boss doesn’t want any trouble with the womenfolk in town.”

Though taken aback, James manages to give Sam a look that broadcasts, ‘behave yourself.’ To the bartender, he says, “Well, sir, I guess we better move to a table, then. Will that be okay?”
The bartender smiles in relief. “Yes, it will. I’ll serve you from there.”

“It’s not okay with me.” Clearly, Sam has her hackles up.

James takes her by the arm and half drags her over to a table. He plops her down and pulls up a chair for himself. Other people in the bar stare open-mouthed at the two of them.

“Sam, for heaven’s sake. Quit grumping about the bartender and take a look around.”
“What am I looking for?”

“These people appear as though they’re from the 1800s. Look how they’re dressed. There’s not a zipper in the place. All buttons and suspenders.”

Sam glances around the room. “I see what you mean. The women look like Miss Kitty from the show Gunsmoke.” Sam pauses. “Oh, no.”

And That’s a Week Wrap!

(I should just make this one my theme song.)

Hey, anybody hear that I released a new book?  It’s called War of Nytefall: Ravenous and it’s a really good read.  Just click on the cover:

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Now, I feel like I’ve done some author stuff.

So, when was the last time I made one of these posts?  A week ago . . . Feels like an eternity since so much has happened.  I can even tell you about some of it.  Not all because of what it entails, but it was one of those weeks where every day had a new surprise either at work or at home.  Sometimes it was a ‘ugh’ surprise and other times it was a pleasant one.  In the end, I truly believe that I deserve pizza for dinner tonight.  Need to really pick up some wine one day.

School has seen a lot of changes as we learn more about our situation.  I’m used to things shifting from day to day, so that doesn’t stress me.  Helping out wherever I can without driving myself into the ground.  I’ve gathered 3 masks and I’m trying to build up more of a collection since it’s kind of fun to have choices.  So far, I have:

  • Phoenix and Dragon fighting over a sword
  • Marvin the Martian
  • Spaceballs the Face Mask
  • (on the way) Fairy Tail symbol
  • (on the way) Roaring dragon

I have to make my own fun at times since you never know what’s going to happen.  There have been schools in other districts with Covid cases.  Some have shut down for a few weeks while others have simply quarantined those exposed.  Really hoping my school and my son’s school don’t have to deal with any of this.  Time will tell and I’ll keep doing my job in any way that I can.  If I’m not focusing on that then I’m either writing or helping my son with his homework.  He’s gotten much better at his hybrid system, so things are settling down in this arena.

Unfortunately, I have had a bunch of hiccups.  Dealing with unpredictable people can really wear one down.  You never know what you’re going to get with them.  Will they be working with you, against you, or not do anything at all?  There’s no telling what will trigger a shift as well.  Eventually, you hit a point where every encounter with these people is met with apprehension.  That’s why I’m glad to get a little ‘me’ time this weekend, which will help me to reset.

Might get a little writing done too.  War of Nytefall: Eulogy hasn’t been touched for a while if you don’t count the two sections I snuck in this week among the chaos.  One of them ended up causing me to delete another section because I was halfway through when I realized that I was using the wrong characters.  Didn’t want to redo everything and the scene still worked, so I changed things around.  My hope is to finish 2-3 chapters this week since I can write at night.  The only other thing I’m working on is the preparation work for a future spin-off of The Ether Thief.  Get to work on it when I have lunch or a free period, which isn’t bad.  The spin-off is going to be short with only 6 short stories with 8-10 sections each.  Shows how one of the recurring characters got to the point where Sin meets him.  I might finish it by the end of September and then I can move on to the next challenge.  Have to stay productive somehow.

Let’s see . . . work . . . parenting . . . chaos . . . writing . . . I don’t know what else I could write about without boring everyone.  People tend to focus on one section here anyway, so I don’t think I have to make these very long unless something big happens.  Only other thing I did was finish watching an anime called ‘Black Butler’.  It’s about a boy who is a nobleman that investigates the underworld doings for Queen Victoria.  His butler is a demon that he made a deal with and they have adventures.  There’s a lot more nuance to it, but that’s the gist.  The butler looks entirely human, but is very powerful.  I think what drew me to it was the catchphrase: “I’m just one Hell of a Butler.’  It was short and I enjoyed it.  Got rather dark and creepy, but that isn’t too surprising.  Think I’ll start in on a longer series next like ‘D-Grayman’.

Well, that’s really it.  Feel free to comment, suggest future post ideas for the blog, or whatever you like.  I’m so drained that I might even take a nap.  In fact:

Goals of the week

  1. Take nap.
  2. Work hard.
  3. Sleep enough.
  4. Pizza tonight!
  5. Write.
  6. Enjoy the one night I have with my son.  (Dinner and cartoons, which I’ll happily take.)
  7. Start another anime.
  8. Maybe set up a puzzle post for a future Sunday.

How Do Dawn Fangs Hide?

As I’ve previously said, War of Nytefall: Ravenous deals a lot with Clyde not wanting the Dawn Fangs exposed to the mortals.  I’ve explained his plain many times.  In case you missed those posts, he has Dawn Fangs living among mortals and will eventually reveal his people to prove that they are not a threat.  Not the perfect plan, but decades of living in harmony with neighbors can help his case.  So, how are they hiding?

Honestly, this is an odd question to answer because I think it’s kind of obvious.  Yet, I have been asked this.  Well, the Dawn Fangs can be in the sunlight, eat mortal food, have heart beats, and look mortal.  All they have to do is move into town, find a place to live, and forge a niche while getting to know their neighbors.  These people may be powerful, but they aren’t warriors.  They are vampires who have more of a background in farming, smithing, and other trades that they possessed before turning.  Many have kept up with changes in their old professions while others have retained lost skills, so they are rare artisans.  Dawn Fangs arrive as couples, single, or in small groups.  A recent change is that they arrive as families now that there are teenage womb-born that are able to function in the real world.  Nobody would know they’re anything other than mortal.

That doesn’t mean this is easy.  Dawn Fangs still have trouble with holy magic, especially if it’s combat-related.  Healing spells don’t have much of an effect on them and they can’t touch holy items.  So, they have to be careful about discussing the gods or goddesses that they follow.  Safest bet is to claim a deity that doesn’t have a shrine or temple in the area, so you can say you pray in private.  It gets difficult in the big cities where a large presence is needed and many temples have locations.  The saving grace is that nobody really pries too much into that part of one’s life.  An exception would be Gods’ Voice where every deity has a shrine or temple.  Only Dawn Fangs who were born with or developed a resistance to holy magic can go there until the world knows they exist.

Another issue is that Dawn Fangs don’t age.  So, Clyde’s plan definitely has a time limit unless he does something.  While it isn’t mentioned in the books, he has had people fake their own deaths and leave their children in their place.  It isn’t hard to bury a Dawn Fang that has turned off their life signs and retrieve them later.  Most simply tunnel out and head for Nytefall or the Scrumptious Siren.  Some go back to Nytefall for good because they aren’t ready to create a public life and lose it again.  Others will pick a new town far away and try a new path.  With so many immortals, it’s easy for them to jump into a totally different life because they have multiple skill sets.  Even with this system, it is taxing on the spirit of these beings that wish to join the open world.  That is a big reason that Clyde is pushing for the war to end.

Immortal Wars: The Summoning Part 36 #fiction #throwback

(Previously on Immortal Wars.)

(Again, we shall revel in my teenage originality.  Everyone groan in unison.)

Disclaimer: Immortal Wars was the book I came up with and wrote in high school.  I hadn’t even hit college by the time I wrote the first two books.  That means I hadn’t developed my style yet, wasn’t good at self-editing, and the story was fairly basic. So, you’ve been warned that this is the ultimate author throwback segment for my blog and will show my author origins.  FYI-  I put the first book (The Summoning) through a Print-on-Demand publisher and the second one (Light, Blood, & Tears) never saw the light of day.  Enjoy!

After silently landing the space skimmer, both teams go their separate ways.  Solix and the girls have a much shorter distance to travel than Fate and Infinity, so they take their time getting a feel for the terrain and looking for ambushes.  It takes them ten minutes to cross the desolate three miles and arrive at the edge of the busy construction site.

“What is that ugly thing over there?” whispers Hydrana.  The three guardians decided to hide behind a large pile of cold boulders.  They could see almost everything that is going on in the villains’ camp and still stay out of sight.  None of them notice the cold winds and desolate landscape that surrounds them.

“The large, black reptiles are a primitive race called Maviks.  They’re known for their extreme strength and hurricane breath.  I thought that I would never have to see one of them again.  You see, they originally lived on the Earth’s moon until they were all taken and somewhat tamed by Adriana and the others,” answers Solix.

“I wasn’t talking about those things.  I was pointing at the golden guy standing next to the giant lizard.  Who is that?”

“I’m not really sure.  It definitely looks like it could be Hellax.  I can’t be positive from this far away,” says Miracle.  They watch as a worker that is carrying some heavy equipment, which is the size of a large truck, accidentally trips the gold garbed figure.  When Hellax gets up, he grabs the bulky alien and uses his birthright powers on it.  The big creature slowly melts from the inside out and gets turned into a puddle of disgusting mush.  Unfortunately, the heavy equipment has nothing holding it up anymore and falls on top of Hellax.  It takes twenty of the strongest members of the Clan of Fire to get the machinery off of him.

“It’s definitely Hellax.  I don’t know anyone else that could possibly be stupid enough to kill someone that is holding a heavy object over their head,” whispers Solix.

“I think I may have dated a few who were that stupid.  Doesn’t say much for me.  So, any ideas on how to distract them?” asks Hydrana.

“I have a good one.  Watch and laugh,” responds Miracle with a mischievous grin.  She effortlessly creates a flock of giant eagles over the construction site.  The large birds silently swoop down and start tearing into all of the alien troops.  One of the large birds knocks a piece of the Black Tower onto a retreating crowd aliens before it is shot down by the warship.  In a few minutes, the eagles are destroyed.  But not before they cause a lot of chaos and confusion among the Clan of Fire.

“Good one.  But check this move out,” laughs Hydrana as she puts her hand to the frigid ground.  A low and growing rumble begins to come from deep underground.  The entire surface of Pluto rapidly begins to heat up after a couple of seconds.

“Be careful, Hydrana.  You’ve never tried this power stunt before,” cautions Solix.  He watches steam begin to rise from the ground and everyone nervously listens to the increasing sound of rumbling, which is beneath his feet.

“Relax.  I know what I’m doing.  I think.”  Suddenly, steaming geysers begin erupting from underneath the construction site.  Screams of burning pain and intense surprise fill the air as the alien members of the Clan of Fire scurry around in order to avoid getting scorched by the boiling water.  Hellax gets knocked into the side of the warship by a large geyser that erupts directly under his feet.  He quickly stands up, but the idiot hits his head on one of the ship’s gun turrets and collapses.

“Let’s see someone beat that,” challenges Hydrana.  In response, an orange hammer soundlessly flies through the air and hits Hydrana in the back of her head.  The Neptune guardian flops to the ground and without her, the geysers stop.  Her friends can see that she is still breathing, but the redhead is out cold.

“Looks like your vision was off by a couple of hours!” shouts Mindtrigger from a few feet above the guardians.  His black gloves each have a glowing circle of gold on the backs that disappear once he puts his hands together and carefully lands next to Solix.

“Does it really matter?” asks Startrix, who has a crackling arrow aimed at the unconscious guardian.  Solix and Miracle both realize that she is holding Uranus’ mystical bow of scorcher arrows.  Once the black string of the pure silver bow is pulled back, a magical arrow, composed entirely of solidified heat, will appear.  This arrow is capable of going through almost anything that gets in its way.

“I don’t think it matters.  What do you think, microwave?” says Tegam, as he becomes visible on top of the boulder stack.  He flips to the ground and slowly walks around Miracle with a crafty smile.  Faster than she can react, Tegam grabs her elbow.  The sly jester pulls the guardian as close as possible and kisses her on the lips.

“Get off of me you little twerp!” yells Miracle.  She open-hand slaps Tegam a couple of times in the face and stomps down on his foot with her boot heel before aiming her freeze ray at him.  She is about to shoot the jester in the chest when he hits the gun with his glowing whip and turns the freeze ray into a harmless grasshopper.  A laser arcs over everyone and hits the insect as it hops into the air.

“Well, aren’t you are a feisty one?” laughs Cybro as he grabs the Venus guardian’s arms with his metal, stomach claw.  Miracle struggles to get away, but she can’t seem to escape his robotically enhanced grip.

“Who in the galaxy are you?  I don’t remember ever meeting, much less exiling, a robotic immortal,” states Solix.  The remaining villains grab him and the unconscious Hydrana in order to take all of them to Adriana.

“You do not recognize me, ancient one?  Consider me the new and improved Cybro.  This is what your Solstar medallion’s power did to me and I blame you for my transformation.  Now, I can cause much more death than ever before,” growls Cybro in his electronic voice.

“Hello, old man!  Just forget about Cybro!  He is the least of your worries, my old teacher!” shouts Adriana as she approaches the three captives.  She seductively strides up to Solix and kisses him right before spitting in his face.

“Adriana.  Still as charming and egotistical as ever.”

“And you’re still as serious as ever.  I see you’re also still interested in spending time with teenage girls.  You know, I really thought our time together during our private sessions enabled some of my personality to rub off on you.  Along with some other things.  But I guess I was wrong.”

“Too bad none of my wisdom rubbed off on you or you would know that you can’t win this fight.”

“Solix, Solix, Solix.  You poor deluded old relic.  You and your novice guardians are seriously outnumbered, outgunned, and outsmarted.  I’ve already won this battle and, in a few hours, the Immortal Wars.  I like the sound of that, which will be talked about all over the planets as the final days of their guardians.  I’ve won this part of history and it isn’t even the afternoon yet.  This galaxy is finally going to be all mine.”

“Excuse me, voluptuous one?  Don’t you mean it will all be ours, Adriana?” interrupts Mindtrigger.

“What?  Oh, sorry about that little slip of the tongue.  I meant our galaxy.  Really.”

“You forgot something, Adriana.  There are still two more guardians out there.  They can beat you no matter what you do to the three of us.  You haven’t won this fight,” says Miracle while she continues trying to wriggle out of Cybro’s grip.

“This black-haired one seems to have most of her heroic cliches memorized.  You’re the one called Miracle.  Am I right, loud mouth?” asks Adriana when she turns to the struggling Venus guardian.

“Yeah.  What does that have to do with the others?”

“Well let me just say this.  You, my dear enemy, are living in a dream world if you truly believe that the last of the second-generation guardians can defeat all of us.  Your friends will encounter one of the most vicious immortals in this galaxy and will be destroyed long before I’m done talking with you three.  Do you understand?  They’re probably taking their last breath right about now.  So stop being ignorant and just accept the fact that it’s over before it began.”

“What makes you so sure that they won’t win?”

“Good doesn’t always triumph over evil in the real world.  The death of the original guardians proves that fact a thousand times over.  Fate and Infinity are just two harmless, young boys pretending to be superheroes.  Actually, I’m going to enjoy seeing their barely recognizable corpses dropped into an incinerator a lot more than killing you losers,” whispers Adriana into Miracle’s ear.

“I’m going to enjoy ripping your throat out once your neutered, metal pitbull of a cyborg lets me go,” growls Miracle.  She bites Adriana on the cheek only to receive an equally savage punch in the face.  Adriana puts her hand to her wounded face and feels her warm, red blood trickle down her flawless skin.

“Cybro wasn’t kidding about you.  You can be extremely vicious when you’re angry.  Of course, I’m not the one that you’re going to end up murdering like a piece of livestock.  I have a much better idea, which will ensure either your gruesome death or your complete obedience to me.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You’ll find out soon enough, Miracle.  Now I want one of you brainless idiots to go get my healing staff, so I can restore the unconscious redhead.  We do want to be fair after all.  I want someone else to find out where Psylon is hiding on this waste of a planet.  She should be done by now,” orders Adriana at the top of her lungs.  Miracle and Hydrana are carelessly tossed into a huge pit while everyone stands around to watch them.

“You know exactly what I’m going to do to them.  Don’t you, Solix?” asks Adriana with a soft, cooing voice.

“Of course.  I also know that I cannot get involved or you will kill all of us,” replies Solix as he gets pushed into a cage.  The rectangular cage has a rotating, spherical device installed in the top, which hums to itself.

“Wrong as usual.  Whether you get involved in this little demonstration or not, the three of you will still die.  Eventually, all heroes die.  It’s just that I enjoy this type of execution more than a sloppy slaughter.  In fact, this kind of thing reminds me a lot of my childhood.  The games were one of my favorite things to watch.”

“You’re one very disturbed immortal, Adriana.”

“Really?  That’s one of the nicest things you have ever said to me, Solix.  Keep the compliments up and I’ll have your immortal head mounted on a very nice plague on my bedroom wall.  Anyway, that little device in the top of the cage will prevent you from using your powers as long as you or any other immortal is inside the cage.  Have fun.”  Adriana grabs her healing staff from a blue, seven-eyed fish-man.  She aims it at the groaning Hydrana and fires the blue shaft of light into the limp body.

“Ouch.  Where am I?” asks Hydrana when her eyes flutter open.  She sees all of the grinning aliens above her and she looks over to Miracle for a good explanation.  When absolutely nothing is explained, Hydrana scrambles over to where her friend is standing and she gets helped to her quivering feet.  In a nearly audible whisper, Hydrana asks her question again.

“Where are we and what’s going on?”

“You don’t want to know, Delila.  You really don’t want to know,” replies the Venus guardian as she looks up at their excited captors.

Do the Dawn Fangs Have Laws?

Occasionally, a question comes up that I want to answer on the blog.  Not always from other people like this time.  I realized I haven’t really talked about the laws of Nytefall, which come into play a lot in War of Nytefall: Ravenous.  I haven’t really been one to create detailed laws for my fictional locations.  I tend to make things up as I go along because it isn’t like someone is running around yelling the rules.  Even in reality, we don’t always know the specific laws of our society until we face a specific situation.  That being said, Nytefall should be talked about.

Clyde is still more a thief and leader of a gang, so he hasn’t been strict.  He knows Nytefall has to be kept in order, but they’re hiding in the shadows of Windemere.  This means that he needs to be strict and loose.  If he has too many rules then it can lead to exposure because Dawn Fangs won’t be flexible in emergencies.  Too loose and you get total chaos, which means exposure will happen really fast.  As confident as Clyde is, he’s still really unsure of himself as the leader of a kingdom and blossoming species.  His instincts are primarily about raw survival, which might be a good thing.  It means, he’s less likely to attempt world domination, which I’ll touch on near the idea.  For protection, he has made some rules:

No Hunting or At Least Killing When Feeding

Since Dawn Fangs can sustain themselves on mortal food, blood isn’t a daily necessity.  It is still needed at some points to keep their strength up, but they don’t have to drain a person entirely.  Clyde sees this as an important factor in mortal/Dawn Fang relationships because it means mortals aren’t prey.  Since people are used to vampires killing their targets, they’re less likely to assume they have been bitten if they are still breathing.  Still, it’s dangerous as time progresses, which is why he has urged those living among mortals to find trustworthy donors.  Chastity helps with this and they always have Lost to clear memories if things go wrong.

Do Not Mess with Holy Warriors

Vampires have always had this in some ways, but Clyde has changed it a bit.  It isn’t only to prevent another crusade against his kind.  Once the Dawn Fangs are revealed, they will need to be accepted by the various temples.  The Garians are on their side thanks to a species tome being created for them, which has given them an understanding into their nature.  They don’t share this because the more doubtful holy orders could learn about the weaknesses.  Honestly, this comes more into play for Anarchy than Ravenous.

Do Not Reveal Our Presence to the Mortals

I shouldn’t beat around the bush here.  THIS is the big one!  With Clyde’s dream being to prove that mortals and Dawn Fangs can coexist, he feels that they have to be careful and remain a secret.  Having his people live among mortals for several decades with no incidents will give his argument a solid foundation.  Unfortunately, all of these problems turning up and be against him, which extends the existence of this law.  So far, his gang has been able to eliminate all exposures and keep the Dawn Fangs as a rumor, but this is where he is most strict.  At the beginning, he executed all who made a mess, which nearly got Lost killed during her debut.  Now, he executes those that purposely try to start with mortals and pulls those who have accidents back to Nytefall for lessons.

Please Let Gregorio Know You’re Pregnant

This is an odd one and a result of Lost showing up.  Once Dawn Fangs learned that they could sexually breed, the womb-born became a normal piece of their society.  The difficult thing is that child vampires aren’t easy to control.  They’re fine when babies because they don’t talk and only possess the ability to create strong followers called Utukku.  Baby Dawn Fangs don’t have to if they have their parents.  It’s when they get their special abilities that they go to Gregorio Roman for training in control.  The excuse given is that they’ve gone to one of various boarding schools that Chastity has created with no real locations beyond what it says on paper.

Do Not Show Mortals or Our Enemies How to Get to Nytefall

No explanation needed on this last one.  It’s kind of a duh.

Do NOT Piss Off Gabriel the Destiny God

Now for that world domination thing.  This isn’t really a rule, but it’s become an underlying guideline for Clyde and the Dawn Fangs.  He isn’t an idiot and has pointed out that his transformation might not have been part of Gabriel’s designs.  This means he could be on thin ice with the most powerful god of Windemere simply for existing.  If he added an attempt to conquer the whole world then that’s just asking to be wiped out like the Hejinn.  Those are the original elves, which were tainted with demon blood and enslaved the other races before being sealed away.  Clyde is aware that those who push for too much power end up getting undone by chosen heroes that Gabriel creates to retain the balance of the world.  He doesn’t want to get involved in something like that, which is another reason he pushed for coexistence.  Secretly, he hopes that doing this doesn’t only convince the mortals that his people aren’t a threat, but that Gabriel acknowledges this as well.

The Nutshell Set-Up Wants

Staci Troilo's avatarStory Empire

Comedy Tragedy

Ciao, SEers. We’ve been talking about Jill Chamberlain’s Nutshell method of story development. If you missed earlier posts, you can find them by clicking these links:

Last time, we ended by mentioning the catch is related to the desires of the protagonist. Today, we’re continuing this series by discussing the set-up want.

Honestly, the term is pretty much self-explanatory. A “set-up want” is something the protagonist desires that sets up the next part of the story.

Yes, that was obvious. I apologize. But this next part might not be. A set-up want is one thing the protagonist wants. And your protagonist may—and probably does—want a lot of things. So, whatever you choose, you need to be sure the set-up want leads to the catch. It doesn’t need to be the most-desired thing. It doesn’t need to…

Teaser Tuesday: Monster in the Ballroom #fantasy #vampires

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Welcome back to another teaser for War of Nytefall: Ravenous.  Today, I’m bringing back Desirae and showing part of the inside of the Pleasure Shadow.  She seems to be having a small issue though.  A criminal mastermind who runs a secret brothel and is going up against Clyde never gets a break.  This might be the first time I’ve shown this repeated monster.  Enjoy.

The Continuing Evolution of Clyde and Mab

Yes, I know I’ve done this kind of post before, but the relationship between Clyde and Mab is a central part of the story.  War of Nytefall: Ravenous will see a really big twist in this relationship.  There will be a brutal test for them to get through and it’s going to get messy.  Let’s be honest, folks.  People enjoy romances more when they aren’t clean and unchallenged.  It’s the perfect spot for drama.

Now, I can’t go into details because the book needs every bit of curiosity I can build to get some sales.  In Eradication, Clyde and Mab suffered a really big blow.  They’re still kind of standing, but it’s definitely awkward.  Strained is another way to look at it.  This creates a dangerous situation because of Clyde’s condition.  He can be very monstrous and violent when his temper is unleashed, which puts his humanity at risk.  It’s his mortal-like relationships that keep him grounded with the biggest one being Mab.  Even if they are only partners and not lovers, he depends a lot on her emotional and physical support. I know some might consider her a crutch, but she has something similar.  While not to Clyde’s extreme, Mab being with him helps give her a sense of belonging.  Otherwise, she would be a lone thief wandering around without any real connections.  Not a good thing for Dawn Fangs who can have emotional surges.

So, why do I like messing with these two?  Well, have you met me?  I did the same think to Luke Callindor and Kira Grasdon in Legends of Windemere.  It’s actually rare that I leave a relationship untouched.  Xavier Tempest and Nadia Sylvan might end up being the exception.  Putting relationships to the test help to make the reader believe that they are real and effort is being put in to maintain them.  If the characters become a couple and never have a challenge to that status then it doesn’t hold much weight.  Not unless that’s the end of the story.  Emotional drama and anguish stemming from relationship turmoil is very juicy because many people can relate to it.  Might not be to the same extent as the characters, but we all know a little about heartbreak.

An added challenge with Clyde and Mab is that I’ve trying to write a love story arc with a broken heart.  Yes, I’m noting the divorce again.  My blog and I can admit when it’s been a factor.  It makes it difficult to write romantic scenes, especially here.  This is the only relationship I had planned that was based around my own marriage, which one would think should result in me crashing it into the ground.  Yet, I can’t really take it out on the characters because their strong relationship is needed to keep the story going to the final volume.  That has resulted in me being a little more brutal to the characters.  It’s developed into something rather different than me being mean though.  I’ve turned it into a story where these characters will go through utter, mind-crumbling, heart-crushing hell and stay together.  I’m fine with this spoiler.  Mostly because I think this can give readers hope that you can make it through rough patches as long as you have the following in a relationship:

  • Love
  • Honesty
  • Trust
  • Humor
  • Empathy
  • Hope/Faith
  • Humility
  • Support

There might be more to add onto the list, but I’m going for myself.  You can even maintain one without all of those as long as you have some stability.  Those are what I see behind the Clyde and Mab relationship when I step back to write them.  It’s going to be something I try for in future stories where romance is going to happen.  As far as War of Nytefall goes, this is at the core of the connections.  I’d say this goes for Xavier and Nadia as well, but their relationship has enough of the first category that faltering in the others doesn’t make a dent.  Seriously, those two are blissfully enamored with each other, so it’s like an eternal honeymoon stage.  Funny how they’re also on the villain side of things.

So, what aspects of a relationship do you look for in a fictional relationship?  Do you enjoy them simply to see them fall apart?  Do you hate them entirely and wish romance would stay in its own lane?  (Pretty sure I’ll get more answers to that last one.)

Destruction of Potential

Born with a goal
Yet not with a promise
Every human
Given a plan
Shown by dreams and skills
That society denies
Crumbling their truth
Until a husk remains
Smiling with pride
At basic survival
Ignoring the scar
Of what has been removed
I wonder how many
Have been destroyed
Never to touch their truth
Driven away
From what they were born to do
Dying unfinished

I’ve been thinking a lot about this, especially as schools reopen.  While it isn’t a popular opinion, I do believe in destiny.  Every person on this planet exists for a purpose and they have the skills to achieve this goal.  All they need is the opportunity, which is where things go wrong.  Society doesn’t really nurture dreams.  We label things as practical and impractical, which leads to discouraging certain paths.  You can’t make money doing that?  You can do that when you retire!  It’s time to put childish dreams away!  These are the phrases that have crushed many people.  We wonder why mental illness is on the rise while stamping out dreams.  This comes a lot from being a member of my generation, which doesn’t really have a name.  Growing up, all of us were told that you can do anything if you work hard and get a good education.  It was a lie.  Those of us who didn’t go for the ‘practical’ jobs found that working hard didn’t get you as far as nepotism and luck.  Even those who did follow the ‘right’ path found that hard work wasn’t the guarantee for success.  This mixed with us rushing off to college, incurring debts, and graduating to find that it didn’t really help.  We all know people who are working in fields that have nothing to do with their degree.  It makes one wonder what the point of all the hard work and education was if you end up somewhere that you didn’t plan.  Society forces most of us to strive solely for survival of the body while the mind and spirit are left to drag themselves along for the ride.  Then . . . one dies.  Whatever they were meant to do goes unfinished and the world loses whatever it would have gained.  It makes me wonder how many souls are on the other side wishing they had their chance to shine.  This rings exceptionally true during when you see people dying who didn’t have to die.  Did the cure for cancer just die of Covid-19?  Did the next great novel just die in a war zone?  What would that have child become if they weren’t shot while playing with friends?  Sure, this is dark and it’s a winding rant.  Yet, I can’t help, but feel like humans created a world where dreams and potential are crushed more than nurtured.  This is at the root of so many problems for the individual and society as a whole.  I mean, wouldn’t the world be a happier place if everyone got to follow their dreams?
