WAR OF NYTEFALL: SAVAGERY AVAILABLE FOR 99 CENTS!

As you can see, I published my newest book this week.  It was a nice surprise in that I got everything together.  This meant I got to publish the book in time for my birthday.  Every year that I publish around a big holiday, I forget about the balancing act.  Still, I got everything done when I wanted.  Finished writing up the last of the requested promos last night too.  Now . . . I can try to stay awake for the rest of the day.

I think this post being late speaks for the whole week.  I only had enough energy to do the promos last night before I crawled into bed.  I was up later than usual with my son watching cartoons, which is why I didn’t get to anything else.  He’s with me for this weekend and a little of next week, so we’ve been busy.  Everything we hoped to do during Spring Break is getting handled now since we didn’t get that time.  Clothes shopping, Lego sets, video games, drawing, and the list keeps going.  I always feel like my time with him is so limited.  Need this damn pandemic to be over because I miss the old schedule where we got more time together.

Work was crazy since we came back from break and it was the end of the quarter.  Lots of changes there and my son was in the same boat, so tons of homework.  All of this has been making me think about testing.  So many kids are able to do projects, research papers, or discussions on topics, but fail at tests.  Yet, we make tests the benchmark for grading.  It helps those who are only good at testing and has no effect on those who can excel at all categories.  It only hurts those with focus issues, memory issues, reading comprehension issues, and other challenges that make tests harder.  Sadly, I have no answers for this beyond reducing tests and switching them for other ways of figuring out if a student knows a topic.  Not a popular thing in this country.

You can tell I didn’t do much this week besides publishing a book and working.  My mind is locked on strange things.  Like how some people can get away with being manipulative while others can’t even get away with being honest.  It’s amazing how many people I’ve seen lie, leave out facts, or put on an emotional show to get others to side with them.  It inevitably results in the other party getting made out to be a monster and be shoved onto the defensive.  I’ve noticed when a person is frantically defending themselves and panicking, they end up losing.  It doesn’t matter if they’re right while the other person manipulates the situation.  People see the loss of control as a sin instead of them possibly being provoked.  Very frustrating and sad to witness.

Writing has been rather non-existent.  I finished some editing and never got much time during the week.  My nights were spent handling some personal issues and getting extra sleep.  I got a little of an outline done during one day of school, but I’m not expecting to touch it again for a while.  My plan is to dive into the ‘Slumberlord’ outlines next weekend when I’m not doing any late birthday stuff.  Maybe I’ll do some during the weeknights if I have the energy since I don’t have any blog stuff to prepare.  I don’t know what I’m doing for June with it being all poetry.  Should I use it to promote books or just come up with random topics?  I think I’ve got a post coming up next Sunday about it since I don’t know what I’m doing.

Television-wise, I haven’t done much.  I watched this short anime called ‘Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out’.  It’s a ‘Slice of Life’ comedy that a friend enjoyed reading, so I gave it a shot.  Not bad, but it wasn’t easy to binge watch.  I think it works best if I watch an episode or two then go off to do something else.  Watched the last of the ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ live action movies too.  That finished off Spring Break.  After that, I started watching a classic called ‘Tenchi Muyo’ . . . It’s not as good as I remember.  Can’t put my finger on why I’m not into it like I was long ago.

Next week isn’t going to have anything special.  I have my son for the first half, but we’ll be focused on school.  Last quarter means things are going to get tougher.  I have no novels to work on until I finish outlining things.  There’s a big tinkering I need to do with ‘Slumberlord’.  Basically, I’m changing a female character to male, but keeping their love interest male.  It’ll be my first attempt at a gay relationship, so I’m being very careful even with the outlines.  They’re only in the first book, but I know how people get about these relationships.  It’s not even the main character involved.  This might be why I’ve been dragging my feet on getting to the actual outlining.  That and I haven’t done a big outline in over a year.  I feel rusty, which is made worse by the lingering depression and anxiety I’ve had for months.  Did I say I want the pandemic to end?  The beating my mental health has taken is agonizing.  Anyway, I’m hoping to get the first book outline done by the end of next weekend.  It’ll be a longshot given my energy and brain, but we’ll see.

Decent way to get to the goals of the week list:

  1. Time with son
  2. Work
  3. Outline ‘Tales of the Slumberlord’ books
  4. Try to improve sleep schedule
  5. Go out with a friend for a late birthday thing
  6. Finish ‘Tenchi Muyo’
  7. Puzzle time
  8. Think of June poetry topics
  9. Maybe make a list of July topics to make sure I don’t forget

Happy Birthday to Me?

Well, it’s my 41st birthday.  The 40th wasn’t much to talk about last year because the Covid-19 reactions started around that time.  Parties were canceled, so the milestone passed by fairly quietly.  Wasn’t in the mood for it either.  This year is looking like the same.  Feeling down about it, but what can you do?  Hope this bring some laughter.

WAR OF NYTEFALL: SAVAGERY! New Release on Amazon! #vampires #fantasy

It’s Monster vs Monster and Only One will Keep His Head!

Savagery

For the first time in over a century, Clyde will know what it means to feel powerless and weak.

Headless bodies appearing across Windemere is only the beginning as Clyde faces the terrifying vampire hunter, Alastyre.  Able to match the Dawn Fang leader in power and ferocity, this new menace shows no signs of weakness or mercy.  With both friends and enemies getting dragged into the battle, Clyde will have to find a way to become stronger.  For that, he will have to accept an ancient challenge and pray that those he cares about and trusts can hold Alastyre at bay.

Which monster of Windemere will claim the top of the food chain?

Alastyre disappears for a moment before reappearing in front of Clyde and grinning at how the Dawn Fang does not react. “I have waited many years for this day. You probably don’t remember me since it has been so long. The temptation to tell Mab the truth when she was my captive was so strong that I knew I needed more time to mature. I should only feel happy and excited when we are about to clash. By the way, your enemies put up an entertaining fight. It lasted no more than a couple of minutes, but I enjoyed it. My hope is that your reputation is true and I will get to use my full power for once. The thought of ripping your head off and adding it to my collection is one of the few dreams that gives my life meaning. Is this where we’re going to fight? I see that there is a lot of sand and giant boulders scattered about. Do you use this courtyard as a large rock garden in order to relax? You are a more amusing monster than I expected.”

“I don’t like you,” Mab growls before she is grabbed by the face.

“A drug-addicted worm should watch-”

“Put . . . my . . . partner . . . down,” Clyde growls from behind the hunter. The illusionary vampire fades away as the real one materializes, his gauntlet sword already pressed against the man’s meaty neck. “You say we’ve met before and you’ve been training to fight me. Looks more like you’ve altered yourself to become a freak. The smell of your blood reeks of corruptive magic and demon influence. There’s a hint of Dawn Fang and dragon in there too. You’re nothing more than a glorified golem. Bunch of parts and auras cobbled together to turn a weak mortal into a monster. I’m not impressed, Alan Stryker. Still trying to strike fear into the rotting hearts of my kind? At least your name isn’t as stupid as it was before.”

“Wait, do you mean that guy who attacked you outside of Lord Shallis’s castle?” Titus asks with a chuckle. He grunts when his sister is thrown into him, the force sending the siblings crashing against the patio’s railing. “I told you that keeping him alive was a mistake, but I didn’t think it would turn into this. You must be angry that nobody believed your story about vampires that are immune to the sun. Is that what this is about?”

With a casual flick of his finger, Alastyre sends Clyde’s sword and arm flying across the courtyard. “No because it was another hunter who survived and told that tale. Your leader was so distracted with Mab biting him that he failed to notice a second mortal that he failed to kill. I focused on recovery and getting stronger because I refused to follow such a ridiculous plan. The fewer people who knew about the Dawn Fangs, the better my chances were at being the one to succeed. Please know that I only want to destroy your leadership. Originally, I wished to wipe all of you out of existence, but that could prove to be impossible. You monsters are more talented at hiding than anything else I have hunted, so I could never be sure of your extinction. The next best thing is to take over Nyetfall and use it as a jail for your kind. All Dawn Fangs will be contained on this island once they no longer have their precious rulers. Don’t you agree that this is much better than extermination, Clyde?”

“I have no opinion because it’s never going to happen.”

“Do you accept my challenge?”

“You never officially made one.”

“I demand that you fight me to the death.”

“Thank you for being straightforward and not making me hunt you down.”

“We fight in an hour then.”

“Why not now?”

Alastyre points while mentioning, “You are still missing an arm. I want to face you at full strength.”

“Don’t say I didn’t give you a chance,” the Dawn Fang says as he continues healing the injury.

Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 13

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

“Where the hell did you learn how to drive, Cybro!” hollers Adriana as she pushes a heavy computer monitor off her head.  As her skull inflates into its normal shape, the blond picks up her magic staff to heal her more serious injuries.  She looks around at the inside of the shuttle with papers and destroyed computers scattered all over the place.  She slowly rummages around the trash in order to find some papers that she was reading.

“I am one of the best drivers in the Milky Way.  If Tegam had not covered my eyes, we would not have crashed.  Has anyone seen my hand?  It is gone,” replies the dazed cyborg while he screws his head back on.  As soon as he sees the hand, he yanks it off the object that it has gripped onto.

“Yeouch.  I thought you didn’t like women anymore.  After all, you don’t have emotions and the important male body parts.  Unless you’ve had some improvements attached during your last refit.”

“Not those kinds of improvements.  Still, I do not like women.  They are too high maintenance for me.  Why do you ask?”

“Because your severed hand was clamped onto my thigh!  Disgusting!  Is there a lake or an ocean nearby that I clean myself in?  At least find me a bottle acid.”

“I am sorry.”

“Not as sorry as I am.  Where did we land, Draveon?”

The large man is busy working on the computer that had landed on Adriana’s head.  Since her skull left an imprint and dried blood on the monitor, it is hard to read the coordinates.  But after a few minutes of silence, Draveon realizes exactly where they have crashed.  A large smirk slowly crosses his face.

“I don’t believe this,” Draveon chuckles.

“Good or bad?” asks Cybro while he reattaches his human hand.  Once it is on, he picks up a nearby silver ring.  On it are five detailed, crimson pictures of specific body parts.  They are an eye, an ear, a nose, a hand, and a mouth.  This exquisite piece of jewelry also has a black gem that appears to have some kind of liquid in it.

“Well, Draveon.  Is it good or bad?” repeats the robot.

“Depends on how you look at our predicament.  We did arrive in New York City as we planned.  But there is one very small, and rather unusual, problem.  Luckily, we are still invisible thanks to Tegam’s powers being connected to the shuttle’s systems.  Even though he is knocked out, the computers are still processing his powers.  Can you pull us out, Cybro?”

“Pull us out?  Out of what?” interrupts Adriana, whose staff has become a shaft of blue light.  The light is soon shot into a squished body in a jester outfit, which finishes healing itself and stands up.

“What a rush!  Can we do it again?  Where are we anyway?” laughs Tegam.

“We’re in one of the top floors of the Empire State Building.  Please note that I said in and not on.  The bad news is that no one was hurt by our landing,” mentions Draveon as the sound of police sirens and helicopters become audible.  The shuttle starts to leave the area and lands in Central Park within fifty seconds.

“So, let’s go cause some more trouble,” Tegam says while he goes to open the door.  Adriana roughly grabs him by his spiked, red hair and pulls his ear close to her mouth.

“You are undeniably the most idiotic person in this universe.  Even Hellax isn’t dumb enough to pull that stunt while I am around.  I swear, Tegam, if you attempt another prank on us during this trip, you are going to be far worse than dead.  Do I make myself clear?” whispers the seductive immortal.

“No, but I can make myself clear.  See.”  Tegam starts disappearing and reappearing next to Adriana until she violently knees him in the groin.  He stumbles to the ground and spends the next few minutes wheezing.

“You did not tell him to stop with his jokes.  In all honestly, you should have seen that one coming.  Still, I do not understand Tegam’s reason for covering my eyes during our entry.  It could have been dangerous for us,” states Cybro, who is repairing a computer console.

“How many times do I have to tell you this, my old friend?  There is no reason to my pranks.  That is exactly what a good prank should be.  No reasons to think about.  Just comical unpredictability.  So, what’s the plan, babe?” asks Tegam in a high voice.

“Babe?  You’re asking for it!” shouts the blond.

“Calm down, Adriana.  We have to lure the guardians out into the open.  I say some random violence is definitely in order.  Am I right?” Draveon says.  He tosses a long, copper wire whip to Tegam as he kicks open the door.

“Yes, but three things must come first.  Finding out about Fate’s past will be my job.  I’ll do it in a few hours with Tegam because I want to keep him where I can see him . . .” starts Adriana as she climbs out of the ship.  The midday sun hits her face and she takes a short moment to enjoy the fresh, polluted air and warm sunlight.  After taking a deep breath she flips to the ground.

“I’m flattered,” says Tegam, who appears next to her.

“Shut up.  We also have a shopping list from Mindtrigger.  Cybro and Draveon can rob a few electronic stores for this stuff.  Have fun, boys.”  She tosses a list to Cybro, who scans it with an eye laser and then gives it to Draveon.  The robot hits a green button on his chest and his body takes the form of a dark-haired man, who is wearing an expensive-looking suit.

“Nice trick.  So, Cybro and I have to get computers of all kinds, video game systems, miscellaneous electronics, and . . . an archery set?  Why would our resident scientist want a professional bow and arrow set if his powers are to make mental weapons?  I’m a little confused.”

“Oh, that little thing.  It’s almost Christmas and Chanukah, so I have to get Kilanus something.  She also wants some pewter statues of legendary monsters.  That little list is on the back of the electronic list.  And be careful because those statues can break easily.  Can you get some of those fancy chocolates for me while you’re out shopping?  Thanks, guys.”

“Statues, electronics, chocolate, and an archery set?  This is so demeaning for a warrior like me.  Stop laughing, Tegam,” orders Cybro while he watches Adriana go into the ship and come back with a blue, satin purse.

“Have fun, suckers.  I know I will,” Tegam gasps between outbreaks of hyena-like laughter.

“Come on, Tegam.  I need your help with our job.  Remember to put everything in the ship before we cause any trouble and try to remain inconspicuous.  Here are some credit cards and some cash, Draveon.  I don’t think you should rob anything since that would start the party early,” their voluptuous leader warns them.

“What are you two going to do while we are gone?” asks Cybro while they start to leave the park.  A few young joggers pass by and pretend to ignore the four strange looking people.  They only glance at Cybro, but the take the time to stare at Adriana and Draveon.  Tegam is just laughed at by one of the younger joggers.

“You have to be kidding, Cybro.  We’re in New York City and you have to the nerve ask that question.  Hope your muscles are strong enough to lift a lot of bags and boxes, Tegam.  I have a new closet to fill with clothes.”

“Now it is my turn to laugh at you, jester.  Have fun.”

“Zip it, meatgrinder.  Let me go with the guys, Adriana.  Please.  I’ll do anything that you want me to do.  Well, almost anything that you want me to do.  There’s really no point in me going where all men have gone before,” mumbles the blue-eyed jester.  He gets a couple of chuckles out of the two male immortals, but his target audience only glares at him.

“Just for that joke, you don’t get out of this.  Come on, Tegam.  We have hours of shopping to do.  Actually, I have hours of shopping to do while you have hours of waiting, whining, and carrying my new wardrobe.”  Draveon and Cybro break out in laughter while Tegam hangs down his head in defeat.

“Cybro?” Tegam whispers.

“Yes,” he answers when his gear grinding laughter stops.

“Please kill me.”

“Maybe later.”  Adriana drags Tegam off by his arm while the other two fall onto the grass laughing.

Why Do I Use Humor?

Yahoo Image Search

Honestly, I thought this would be a more challenging question with a deeper answer, but I’ve been sitting here for a while.  The question of how to use humor has been asked several times, but I always wanted to touch on the why.  After all, I use it in all of my stories in the form of puns, witticisms, and physical gags.  So . . . why?

Well, it’s because humor helps me relieve tension and stress outside of writing.  I think laughter or at least a positive reaction can help even in dark times.  Yet, I also understand that it’s just me and you can’t always insert comedy to a situation.  That makes it all the more special in my mind.  It’s become a device that demonstrates personalities.  Not only the person making the joke or doing the gag, but those who react to it.  Are they serious or are they silly?  Can they laugh easily or is it a monumental task?  You also get a sense of relationships by who can joke around with each other.  Two characters who can laugh together are seen as closer than those who can’t share such an action.  They can still be friends, but it’s a different flavor of relationship.  So, humor can show things that would otherwise have to be told or blatantly pointed out.  It’s certainly a versatile tool for an author to have, but it doesn’t work for every type of story.

That’s all I could think of in regards to this question.  Kind of messy, but that’s also how I see it because it can be useful in various situations.  So, why do you use humor in your writing?  If you don’t then what would you use it for if given the opportunity?
