Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 29

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

While Fate and Hydrana were waking up and talking, their friends were in the middle of a fresh warzone.  Burning vehicles and shattered bodies cover Times Square like snowflakes after a blizzard.  Most of the surrounding buildings have gaping holes from either rockets or thrown police cars.  The captured guardians are strapped into large, metal pods with Draveon happily watching over them.

A deafening sonic boom is heard when Cybro shows up.  His head is on upside-down and it has seaweed wrapped around it.  When his skull is flipped right side up, the cyborg spits out a few gallons of seawater.  Draveon just stares up at the sky while an octopus is yanked out of one of the robot’s stomach compartment.

“It’s about time you showed your ugly, removable face.  While you were fooling around in the water, I got some important work done.  Take a long and jealous look, Cybro,” gloats the large man.  Miracle is the only conscious guardian and she is struggling to get free.  Infinity is slumped over in a metal pod with a small bone jutting out of his side and he occasionally takes in a short breath.

“My head fell off again!  Mindtrigger refuses to fix that little problem.  And so what if I was gone.  You did not do anything that I could not accomplish myself.  If you had Fate and Hydrana, I would have been slightly impressed.  These two are nothing more than cannon fodder in this battle.  The real threat comes from the two guardians that you could not capture,” Cybro retorts.

“Hey!  I’m in earshot, microwave!  If you think you can take me down on your own then let me out of this thing.  We’ll see how tough you are after I use your head as a volleyball!” yells Miracle from the capture pod.

“She is still as vicious and tough as when she first crossed our path on Pluto.  I might actually kill her quickly for being so damn entertaining.  Any news from the others?” asks Draveon.  He leans toward Infinity and puts some pressure on the bone sticking out of his side.  The boy tries to scream, but his mouth is covered by Draveon’s large hand.

“Yes.  Adriana is looking for Tegam and needs one of us to tell the backup ship to leave Pluto at full speed.  But there is no rush, so we can take our time.  She did want to know if we have run across either Fate or Hydrana.  She said something about an incident at the zoo and a bridge.  Did I miss something?”

“Oh, that.  I fought Hydrana at the zoo after you flew off.  She fell into the polar bears’ enclosure and was eaten.  Of course, she has to be fully healed by this time.  As for Fate, he was busy trying to play hero on a bridge.  I haven’t seen him since I left him there.  I hope he didn’t get himself killed.  That would ruin my fun.”

“Adriana said that he would go after the Neptune guardian.  He must have tracked her down after you ran away like a scared rodent.  Is your boyfriend going to find the rogue guardian, Ms. Tavinowsky?  I would really like to hear that we are not making a wrong assumption.”

“Yeah.  He knows how to help her and I’m betting that both of them are on their way here as we speak.  When they show up, the two of you are going to be worse than dead.  Still feeling high and mighty, Cybro?  Or have you finally realized that you’re nothing more than an overrated, mechanical chicken?” taunts Miracle, who starts making clucking noises in order to annoy the robot.

“That does it!  Let her out of the capture pod.  She is going to beg me for death.  Come on, Draveon!  Let her out and do not even consider interfering!” hollers Cybro as he jumps up and down.  His lasers and other weapons of pain sprout from his body while his ally lets the raven-haired guardian out.

“Okay.  It’s your funeral, cyborg.  Again,” mutters Draveon from behind Infinity’s heavily shielded capture pod.

“Prepare to die,” laughs the metallic villain.  Suddenly, a large, purple elephant falls on him and disappears.  This crushes most of his weapons and leaves a deep crater in the middle of the street.

“What was that, jackass?  I couldn’t hear you,” says the Venus guardian as she blindly jumps into the crater.  Once she lands, Cybro grabs her from behind with a titanium claw that comes out of his stomach.  A hammer rises out of his face and hits her over the head. After the first blow, her head is shielded by a solid illusion helmet that keeps disappearing.

“This is just like old times, Miracle.  Do you still think I am a mechanical chicken?”  He releases the titanium claw before moving in front of her.  To his surprise, and horror, the guardian backflips and kicks the cyborg’s head off while she’s still in midair.

“Now, you’re a headless, mechanical chicken.  Look, I have to ask this out of curiosity.  Doesn’t that hurt?”  Miracle uses all of her strength to shatter the titanium claw that tries to catch her again.  For fun, she picks up Cybro’s head and spins it on her finger like a basketball.  She tries to dribble it a few times, but it is too heavy to bounce.  So she tosses it around while the body tries to catch her.

“I have had all of my neck’s pain receptors turned off for decades.  Would you stop tossing my head?  It is making me feel nauseous, which I have never felt since I received this new body.  And I have no idea what might come out of me.”  The body makes another lunge at Miracle, but she gives it a snap kick to the torso.  This knocks it into the side of the crater and stuns it for a few seconds.

“I really didn’t have to hear that last part.  Still, I do have some use for you.  Your head is going to become a flare, Cybro,” mentions the green-eyed immortal while she makes several bright lightbulbs appear on the metal skull.  A cunning smirk crosses her face as she places it into a red, solid illusion cannon and fires it into the sky.  The rest of Cybro follows it into the atmosphere.

“Please come back later, Cybro.  I’ll miss you.  He is such a metal moron.  Who’s next?”  A flight of steps appear under Miracle’s feet as she walks out of the large hole.  Draveon is currently leaning against Infinity, who is starting to wake up.  He lets out a few snickers at Cybro’s defeat while the bone goes back under the skin.

“Very interesting.  I think you may have actually found a good use for Cybro’s head.  That is besides using it as a gaudy doorstop or paperweight.  Maybe you can find a use for Adriana’s skull next,” Draveon says.

“Do I sense some negative feelings toward your great leader?  Either open your mouth or put up your fists, big boy,” responds the guardian.

“We’ll talk first since you heroes are very good at these kinds of conversations.”

“Thanks.  I think.”

“You’re very welcome.  And you are right about what I feel toward our foolish nympho.  Over the past year our leader has become, I think the best word is, soft.  Too soft for my liking.”

“I thought all of the guys liked her for being soft.  Or am I just thinking the wrong way.  It must be from hanging around the Earth guardian too much.”

“Funny.  Although, what you’ve said is true about Adriana.  But her emotions have begun to cloud her evil judgement since our return to this universe.  I am not one to talk because I let some of my more . . . decent emotions control my actions at times.  Of course, I have never shown compassion toward my enemies.  Just ask your friends since all of them have faced off against me at some point.”

“Oh.  I get it.  Very clever, muscles.  You’re going to kill Adriana while you guys are on Earth.  Then you go back to your friends and say that it was Hydrana or Fate that did it.  They’re already thought to be insane, so our in-house problem gives you the perfect cover.  Well, I won’t get in your way.”

“Good.  Because I plan to kill Fate along with Adriana.  It’s a relief to see that I won’t be pestered during the final confrontation.”

“Okay!  Now, I’m going to get in your way.”  The two immortals charge at each other at full speed.  A few seconds before what would be a painful impact, Miracle slides under Draveon’s outstretched arms.  She swiftly takes his legs out from under him and watches the ultimate weapon fall on his face.

“I always expected you to be faster than that, Draveon.  You’re either getting slow in your old age or holding back.  I hope it’s neither of those because I’ve never had the chance to fight you.  Getting up already?  Well, I’m very impressed,” mentions the younger immortal.  A big sledgehammer appears in her hand just as Cybro flies back to the fight.

“Stay back, cyborg.  You lost your chance with her.  She is mine until I decide to kill her.  I have always wondered what would happen when our powers came into conflict.  So go ahead and hit me, Kelly.  I dare you,” the red-eyed man challenges.  The Venus guardian calmly walks toward Draveon and swings the large hammer.  Once the heavy object smashes into the large man’s grinning face the weapon disappears.  But the blow seems to hit Miracle because she suddenly collapses with a big bump on her forehead and a broken nose.

“I really love my birthright power.  Well, it looks like the Earth guardian is fully awake.  So, let’s finish off Miracle and then start to kill him slowly.  Goodnight, sweet princess,” whispers Draveon as he picks the groaning Venus guardian up by her long, black hair.

“Put her down!” yells a loud voice before Fate drops onto Draveon’s head.  At the same time, Infinity breaks free and telekinetically blasts the hovering robot.  Cybro falls to the ground, but uses his boosters to land on his feet.  He jumps at the pale-eyed guardian and gets a tight hold of Infinity’s cape.  Unfortunately, the guardian uses the black cape to tie Cybro up.

“Get the hell off of me, runt!  So, it looks like you’re back to normal.  No more insane tactics from you I guess.  Then again you are fighting with me and that is not a sane idea.  Where’s the redhead?” asks Draveon.  He grabs Fate by the shirt and hurls him into the undamaged capture pod.  It closes around the Mars guardian while Draveon kicks Infinity into a burning car.

“I’m right here, boys.  And I use that last term extremely loosely.  Do you remember what I said to you, Draveon?  I promised that I would kill you when we met again.  Well, it’s time, steroid breath,” announces Hydrana, who is cautiously crouched nearby with her hand gently placed to the ground.

“You look so good without teeth and claw marks.  I take it that you’re back to normal as well.  Now, you wouldn’t be trying to hit me with one of your favorite hot geysers.  Of course not, because you are far too cunning and wise to do such an idiotic trick.  Aren’t I right, water sprite?”

“Be careful.  She’s up to something,” Cybro cautions as he rips off the cape and dives behind an overturned truck.

“Don’t worry.  She can’t possibly hurt me, much less kill me.  I should just leave this place and let you fight her, Cybro.”

“You never had a choice about leaving or not.  Don’t forget to flap your arms, Draveon,” Hydrana says as a loud rumbling fills the air.  A second later, the piece of asphalt that Draveon is standing on is launched high into the air by a high-pressure geyser.  He doesn’t even know what has happened until the top of a skyscraper is seen below his feet.  The cursing villain sails over the buildings and only a loud splash is heard from very far away.

“Hope he swims as well as he boasts.  Is there anybody that I missed?” she asks while the other guardians start to get up.

“You forgot me.  I want only you, water sprite.  The others can wait their turn like good little boys and girl,” mentions Cybro.  His body rapidly grows sharp razors and his tri-laser turns into a very nasty looking sword.  When he leaps at the redhead, she has to jump onto a traffic light with all of her strength.

“Nice try.  But you’re far too slow to catch me.”  The Neptune guardian drops back to the ground as the immortal robot slices the traffic light in half.  Sparks shower onto Hydrana and almost blind her.  Some poison arrows shoot out of Cybro’s back, but they get stuck in a quickly built ice shield.

“You cannot jump and defend forever.  Either fight back or surrender.  I would really prefer my first suggestion.”

“So would I,” mutters Hydrana.  She starts throwing spears of freezing cold water at Cybro until he weaves his way too close for range attacks and she has to use high impact water blasts.  An aura of raw heat comes out of his sword’s tip, which evaporates all of the attacks and covers the area in a light, choking steam.

“That is so unfair.  There has to be some galactic rule against that move,” the guardian thinks before she kicks Cybro in his back.  All this accomplishes is Hydrana getting her right foot sliced off by a large razor.  She pathetically hops over the cyborg and right in front of him while standing on her hands.  The sword swishes past as she rolls to the side.

“Good-bye, water sprite.  You were never as strong and tough as you pretended to be,” laughs Cybro while a diamond drill slowly comes out of his chest.  The redhead quickly covers her hands with ice axes and chops through both of Cybro’s arm with all her strength.  Before the sword and Cybro’s only human hand hit the ground, a blast of ice and steam sends the robot into an electric billboard.  The entire rooftop explodes into sparks and light.  Cybro is trapped under the rubble and none of the guardians can see any sign of him.

“Nice shot.  I hope this means that the team is back to normal,” Miracle says while she picks herself up and brushes ash off of her bare stomach.  The other two guardians are already on their feet, but Infinity looks like a barbecue reject.

“Sort of.  Let’s pick up the primal ring and go somewhere relatively safe.  Delila and I have some explaining to do and you should really be sitting down for it.  Trust me on this,” Fate announces.  Hydrana grabs the severed hand with a slight cringe and yanks off the silver ring with the black liquid gem.  Soon they are all resting in a nearby, condemned building, listening to a very weird, yet true, story.

Immortals and the Passage of Time

Yahoo Image Search

As I mentioned yesterday, immortals typically don’t pay much attention to the passage of time.  In fact, many stories tend to show this off by having the immortal be confused about time periods or flat out say it.  They’re designed to be creatures outside of time who have, quite often, ascended to a psychological point where they no longer care about the limited concerns of mortals.  It’s kind of sad and makes for a difficult character if you’re going for a connection.

Thankfully, the Dawn Fangs aren’t usually like this, which comes out pretty clearly in War of Nytefall: Anarchy.

To be fair, there’s been a sense of this from the beginning and much of that was because of how this series works.  It isn’t a vampire story where you have one or a band of mortals facing off against blood-sucking monsters.  You don’t have mortals as the central characters at all here, which has caused some issues.  People see vampire and they focus entirely on the fangs, violence, blood, and powers.  The personalities don’t always get noticed by readers, which is where you would see their gradually changing thoughts on immortality.

The Dawn Fangs are really hard to kill even compared to other vampires, but they have this sense of things being finite.  Sure, they fight with little care for their bodies due to regeneration, but they still avoid taking fatal blows.  You don’t see these characters standing before an enemy and acting like they’re never going to die.  Even Clyde, who destroys people with ease, dodges and acts like he could be taken out.  Honestly, I think more mortals have done the ‘I will not die’ shtick than vampires in this series, which is strange.

You may also note that the Dawn Fangs are starting to make families, dreams, and long-term plans that are similar to what a mortal would make.  Best examples here are Chastity Sullivan and Desirae Duvall.  Both women have created businesses and are continually trying to expand.  They’ve talked about branching out and where they want to go, but it’s spoken of in stages.  While they have eternity, they know that time is a factor and they need to pay attention to it.  Letting the years shoot by as they build slowly means the world will change faster than their businesses, which could fail due to lack of adaptation.

All of this may seem minor and easily missed in the series, which always focus more on the action adventure side.  It really gets overlooked when it comes in discussion, which is what you will see in War of Nytefall: Anarchy.  Dawn Fangs are starting to want the war to end because they wish to live in the light.  They are tired of hiding in plain sight, which is normally a favorite hobby of immortals.  You can tell that their mentality on living forever has changed because they’re developing connections.  This would usually be an issue because a person will have to disappear after a certain amount of years to avoid suspicion and then government probing.  Clearly, it’s not the case here since the Dawn Fangs are pushing to become known to mortals, so they won’t have to rebuild their lives after a few decades.

I always found it strange how immortals who have been around for hundreds of years are still sane or willing to be near humans.  Not to mention how they’ve never been found out, especially when populations were smaller.  The toll on the mind has to be immense and immortals show enough emotion to make you believe they could have mental illnesses and trauma too.  So, how can they keep disappearing and rebuilding their life throughout history without snapping?  Technology changing makes the feat more difficult, so greater actions need to be taken to pull it off.  That’s more stress, which should drive an immortal to just go away from civilization.

My hope is that War of Nytefall: Anarchy really pushes the idea that the Dawn Fangs have a sense of time and belonging.  This way, it makes more sense for them to want to be known and accepted by their neighbors.

Using War as a Backdrop

Yahoo Image Search

There are times when it felt like the Vampire Civil War wasn’t going on, but War of Nytefall: Anarchy has it as the backdrop.  I needed to do this because there were only two books left, so I needed to remind the audience of the situation.  Jewelz, Leo Kandrel, Desirae Duvall, and Alastyre acted as distractions since they were third party enemies with no allegiance to Nyte or Nytefall.  That’s 4 of the 8 books focusing on something other than the war.  5 if you want to say Lost’s debut didn’t have enough of it.  So, Anarchy is really going to stand out here.

That being said, I didn’t start writing battle after battle because I knew that would get boring.  You know they’re going on, but you don’t have to see them.  This is still an action adventure series instead of a strict war one.  Peppering a few here and there made the setting clear.  Beyond that, I found reports and discussions about their progress worked better.  This also allowed for the noncombatants like Chastity and Gregorio to stay in the story.  If you’re only looking at battles then the support characters are going to be left out of the spotlight.

Also doesn’t help that Clyde was staying away from the battlefield and I had to follow him for the most part.  Instead, I had people talk to him about the war and the future.  I liked how this went because it brought the focus on something people tend to forget in stories of war:

Why are these characters fighting?

I’ve mentioned Clyde’s dream throughout the whole series, but this is when he really began thinking about it.  His doubts and fears were showing, which made this incredibly powerful monster come off as human.  It’s hard to make a war come off correctly if everyone involved is a vicious monster, so I put a lot of work into making the Dawn Fangs on both sides show their humanity.  In my mind, this made the weight of their actions and decisions stronger than if I had them battling it out.

You even see how this extended war is wearing on the Dawn Fangs, which can be strange considering they’re immortal.  These beings have eternity to do whatever they want unless they’re killed in battle or by a hunter.  Normally, immortals don’t pay attention to the passage of time, so a war going on for over a decade is a blip in their existence.  Here, they want to stop fighting and living in fear, so they’re getting increasingly more focused on finishing the war.  You get a sense that things are going to get messy if Clyde and Xavier don’t put an end to the fighting soon.  Maybe they do in Anarchy?  Check it out and find out.

Since I don’t watch or read war stories, I might have inadvertently done what those in the genre typically do.  The war is there and important to the story, but there’s more of a character focus.  You’re seeing a smaller picture within the bigger one because the grander scope is too difficult to encompass in a single tale.  By zooming in on those who are involved and affected by the war, you get a sense of the overall impact.  For example, the pressure of leadership has been a constant subplot for Clyde and it gets deeper with every story.  Through him, you can see how much of a challenge it is to wage a war in the shadows while figuring out how your people can live freely in the light.

So, what do you think of using war as a backdrop?  Do you think it’s better to just show the battles?

Goal Post: New Book Release and First Week of School Done

As you can see above, War of Nytefall: Anarchy is available for 99 cents!

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

I’m genuinely surprised and happy that I pulled off releasing this book.  I had all of the pieces together, but the week was crazy.  So, I nearly forgot to hit publish and ended up doing it in the midst of getting ready for work.  Thankfully, I had set everything up on Kindle prior to Friday.  Of course, I’m not 100% certain I remembered all of the promo ideas.  Think I got everything.  Oh well, I’m kind of burnt out, so I’ll go over it again once I recover.

Speaking of promos, I totally forgot about Thursdays.  Typically, this would be ‘Immortal Wars’, but I wanted to push Anarchy for the whole month.  So, I didn’t put any promos on there alongside the ‘Immortal Wars’ stuff.  Oops.  Think I’m going to do faction poems during the 5 day weekend when I have time.  There are 4 groups involved in this story and I have 4 days to cover.  This also makes me wonder what I should do with Thursdays once ‘Immortal Wars’ is done in December.  I’m leaning towards making it a poetry day, but it’s tough thinking of good poem topics.  At least I have time to figure it out.

School started for me on Monday and on Thursday for my son.  He did great with no issues like previous years.  It’s going to be a lot of work, so we’re hoping to get a good system down for homework and getting rest.  He’s taking American Sign Language too and has already absorbed a lot in just 2 days.  My schedule is going to be fun, but not really worth posting about.  As before, most of what I do will involve students and I won’t post about their lives here.  All I can say is that I’m looking forward to this year.  Well, I’m still trying to get used to waking up and getting started at 5:30 AM.  That might take a few weeks since all the Jewish holidays are showing up to give us partial weeks.

Writing did get a little progress, which was surprising.  I wanted to get some work done during my free periods, but I can’t bring my laptop.  The casing is broken, so I can’t close it without things popping.  Can’t afford a new one for a while.  The only other option was to print out War of Nytefall: Eulogy and edit by hand.  Forgot how quickly and thoroughly this is when compared to computer work.  I managed to get a chapter section done in a 40 minute period instead of my usual 2-3 hours on a computer.  No distractions at all.  I might have to do this more often, but the home printer is small and black ink goes quickly.  It turns into 2 editing runs too.  I’ll be checking the manuscript as I add my changes.  Don’t remember the last time I edited like this either.  Think it was 2012 or 2013 when I started publishing.

With Rosh Hashana, I have my son and that means fun this weekend.  At least if we can muster the energy after school started.  Still have some Lego sets to do and I promised one day of video games.  Hoping to see family too.  Beyond that, it might just be resting and getting whatever else we need for school.  Maybe we’ll do an art/editing day where we work on our projects.  Should probably do a movie too since we have so much time.  I showed him ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ last weekend and had him close his eyes at the scary parts.  I don’t know ‘Temple of Doom’ by memory, so we’ll skip that to watch ‘Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade’.  One day, we’ll get to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies, but I still don’t think he can make it beyond a 2 hour film.

Speaking of movies and TV, I did watch a bunch since I was exhausted by the end of the day.  ‘Rurouni Kenshin: The Final’ was a movie adaptation of the last story arc in the manga.  It was good, but I got lost a little with characters not always being named.  Still the action was fun.  I watched an anime called ‘Samurai Warriors’, which is based off the game and didn’t hold my interest very well.  Took me a day to watch 13 episodes, but I don’t remember much.  Think it’s a big sacrificial show period for me while I get back into the swing of things.  ‘Wise Man’s Grandchild’ is the newest anime I’m watching and it has my interest.  So, I’m not touching it when I’m exhausted.  Trying to give it a chance.  I might watch a classic after this such as ‘Cowboy Bebop’, ‘Outlaw Star’, or ‘Trigun’.  Guessing I lost a bunch of people.

Goals of the week?

  1. Sell War of Nytefall: Anarchy copies.  99 cents each!
  2. Son and Family time!
  3. Work time!
  4. Sleep time!
  5. Edit time!
  6. Finish the poems for promos.
  7. Really should pay some bills.
  8. Puzzle time!
  9. Pizza time?

‘War of Nytefall: Anarchy’ Available on Amazon for #99cents! #vampires #fantasy

As the vampires battle in the shadows, a new enemy appears to drag them into the light!

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

The paladins of Windemere have had enough!

As the Vampire Civil War heats up, mysterious murders are being committed against members of every holy order.  All signs point to the culprits being vampires, which has resulted in the creation of a unified paladin army. To protect his people, Clyde must find the killers before the holy warriors unleash their purifying crusade. It is a battle against frustrating obstacles as the war inches closer to mortal civilization and ambitious new allies join Nytefall.

One slip is all that is needed for the secret of the Dawn Fangs to be revealed.

Curiosity piqued? Check out this teaser!

The urge to move faster nearly overtakes Lost’s common sense, but she reminds herself that adults are supposed to be patient. As if her mind is trying to undermine her actions, she is on the verge of whistling the first tune that slips into her thoughts. Sucking in her lips, the Dawn Fang pierces them with her fangs to stop them from causing trouble. The pain makes her eyes water and she squishes mud in her hands to hold back a scream. Reaching out with her telepathy, she tries to locate her targets while she lets her unfocused thoughts run their course. A distant prayer to Ram the War God causes her to change her direction and she takes a deep breath to regain her composure. With the paladins so far away, Lost moves a little faster, but stops short of giving in to her silly, impatient urges. Seeing the edge of the tall grass, she drops again and uses her elbows to pull herself along like she remembers seeing Titus do on several missions. As she comes out of her cover, the bright sun blinds her, so she is unable to stop herself from banging into something metal, which falls onto her back.

“Get off of me!” Lost shouts before telekinetically hurling the object into the river. She scrambles to her feet and freezes at the sight of six paladins standing in her path. “Such shiny and pretty armors, you have here. I really like the guy with the big helmet. Is that an ostrich feather? I keep meaning to ride one of those again. So, nice day for a walk. This is bunny who is totally unable to fly. That’s why he’s on my head. Your friend seems okay, so there’s absolutely no reason for us to spend any more time together. Bye!”

“You must be Lost,” Lord Adam says through his great helm. He takes a step forward and holds out a diamond fused to a bronze chain. “We are well aware of you and your abilities, monster. That is why I travel with this. None of your mind tricks will work on those who stand in my presence. Even your keen senses are tricked by the spells designed specifically to thwart your actions. Be honored that we went to so much trouble to design items with you in mind. No other Dawn Fang has earned so much individual attention.”

“That’s kind of creepy,” she replies as she steps back. Seeing weapons getting drawn, she stops retreating and playfully slaps at the mud with her bare feet. “Needed to wash some gunk out from between my toesies. Well, this is awkward. You brought me such a pretty present and I don’t have anything for you. Bunny says that I need to work on my manners. There’s really no need for violence. Dawn Fangs are mostly good. Just like mortals, we have some bad ones, but we’re all individuals like all of you. I mean, we all eat soup the same way, right? I really hope you all use spoons for that comparison to work.”

“Abominations such as you-” the paladin begins to announce.

“Look at the naked heretic!” she shouts while pointing into the distance.

All of the holy warriors, except for Lord Adam, turn to see what Lost is gesturing at, so she flings mud at their leader’s helmet grating. The man coughs and hacks as the Dawn Fang sprints back to the river and launches herself to the other side. A quake meets her as she lands and she nearly topples onto her side, but manages to stumble along. Glancing over her shoulder, she does not see any of the paladins in pursuit and considers slowing down to get her bearings. Lost’s eyes go wide when she sees the powerful steeds rise into the air, arch over the river, and land in a perfect line that immediately charges ahead. The open plains allow the warriors to move at full speed, which is only slightly slower than the sprinting Dawn Fang. They hurl spells and glowing weapons, which return to their hands, but the attacks never hit their mark. Those that come close are deflected by a telekinetic shield, which repeatedly shatters upon impact thanks to Lord Adam’s diamond weakening her even from a distance. With the relic defending the paladins’ minds and muffling their hoofbeats, she has to repeatedly look over her shoulder to make sure none of them have disappeared. To her relief, they never break formation and she gets a sense of their attack pattern, which never falters.

Clyde in the Hot Seat: Because This Never Goes Well

Alucard from Hellsing (Best I could find)

Having to get the book ready to be released soon and starting school, I need a small break from the blog.  I can’t do that at the beginning of a month of promo posts (minus Thursdays), so I’m handing it off to Clyde today.

Clyde–  Wait.  Just like that?

Interviewer–  He made me to ask you questions with the hope people ask more in the comments.

Clyde–  They never do, but we’ll see what happens. Hit me.

Interviewer–  That doesn’t seem safe.

Clyde– Ask a question.  Do your job.

Interviewer–  I was made a few minutes ago.  Fine.  How do you feel about this being your second to last book?

Clyde–  It feels weird.  I mean, I spent nearly two decades in this guy’s head waiting for my chance to shine.  The Legends crew was being used that whole time because they were the starting point.  Now, I’m nearing the end of my story in the span of five years.  So, I’m kind of sad that I can’t go any longer.

Interviewer–  Would you like to?

Clyde–  Of course, but I know an ending needs to appear.  Gotta make room for the next guy and look back fondly at my time.  This sounds like we’re talking more about the finale than this one.

Interviewer–  Good point.  How’s married life treating you?

Clyde–  Nice way to reveal that Mab and I took the final step.  It’s good, but I haven’t noticed any differences.  We still act the same way.  I think we did it mostly to get people to stop asking us about it.  We were happy being a couple and partners, so the official thing never felt urgent.

Interviewer–  I thought it was a sign the war is ending.

Clyde–  No.  Although, I can see how that would happen.  Maybe it will prompt me to put more effort into ending this mess.  We’re trying really hard, but the battles are getting tricky.  They keep coming very close to drawing mortals into the action.  Chastity and Lost have been busy covering our tracks.  It’s strange because Xavier didn’t want to be noticed either.  He might be getting impatient and sloppy.

Interviewer– Wouldn’t revealing yourself help get assistance with the war?

Clyde–  I doubt it.  Mortals are going to see monsters battling each other.  They won’t be able to tell the difference between the sides because we’ll all come off as violent vampires.  You have to remember that my kind were always seen as predators and that’s not going to change with a simple hello in broad daylight.  It’s easier to reveal ourselves to the mortals once we’re done with Nyte.

Interviewer–  I hear you’re getting some new recruits.

Clyde– Got a few who are interesting.  Not much I can say about them because they have to prove themselves.  I like their energy . . . Most of the time.  The younger Dawn Fangs are beginning to idolize me a wee bit too much for my liking.  It can make things awkward, which is why I don’t leave Nytefall that often.

Interviewer–  Well, this has been fun, but I want to open the floor to the audience.  Are you willing to stay for questions?

Clyde–  I don’t have a choice here.

Interviewer–  True.
