Ionia has asked me to write a guest blog on what Epic Fantasy is since it is thrown around so much.  I use it for my series Legends of Windemere and I will go into that in a little bit.  Much of this will be opinion and you’ll see why.

Epic Fantasy is more commonly known as High Fantasy.  The term is thrown around a lot without a lot of people knowing exactly what it is.  The quintessential Epic Fantasy is Lord of the Rings.  Originally, Epic Fantasy required that the setting by in a world distinct from Earth or have larger than life characters, themes, and plots.  Much of this stemmed from the ‘Good Vs. Evil’ standard that was a cornerstone of Tolkien’s tales.  I know a lot of people call this cliché, but this is how it all started and it’s really just another way of saying…

20 Days of Donations Campaign

Donate even a dollar to help a loving women with a heart condition. Goal is only $300.

C.N. Faust's avatarC.N. Faust

Hello my darlings,

I’m running what is essentially a 20 day blitz donation campaign for Jennie Fox (Formerly Smith, I had that mixed up). Jennie is a great woman who has always been supportive of others and ever willing to help a friend in need. She has been in-and-out of the hospital for most of her life, but now her problems with her heart are getting more severe and the hospital bills are piling up. It is to the point where the next hospital trip can only happen if there is just a little bit of help. So that is what this campaign is for! For the next 20 days, I want to help Jennie gather donations for her next hospital visit, just to get her closer to taking care of this issue with her heart once and for all. Any donation size helps, even if it just $1.00.

Meeting of the Planning Protectors

Today’s Writing Prompt from Community Storyboard.

Superhero logos

People rushed through the streets as the mutated rhinoceros stomped down the city streets. Standing taller than the skyscrapers, this two-legged monster snorts while bashing down the buildings. Only one person can stop the rampaging beast and save the city once again.

“Should we flip a coin or draw straws?” asks Sergeant Commander while he watches the destruction. His hand rests on the grip of his gun, which he proudly calls the Decapitator.

“I went last time,” states Baby Kong from the corner. The short and hairy gorilla yawns and scratches his butt. “I keep telling you that we have to make a schedule or split the city into zones. It would be much easier.”

“That is a horrible idea,” Princess Matilda declares, crossing her arms across her ample chest. She shivers when a gust of cold air from the air conditioner hits her barely clothed body. “Some people would have more action than others. Villains and monster rarely attack on Tuesdays and they avoid the projects. Also, where does that leave Cometus and The Jade Marlin? The latter isn’t even here because he can’t breathe on land.”

A sparkling humanoid with seven arms and wearing only a thong nods his head in agreement. “Yes. Cometus can only fight in space or planet be destroyed.”

“The monster just ate the mayor,” announces a young man in a leather jacket. He revs his motorcycle, which spits lightning from its tailpipe. “And it eat the starting line-up of the Crusaders, so I guess the city’s baseball season is over. Why do these large monsters always eat people? A rhino is a herbivore.”

“Some mysteries will never be explained, Theus,” Sergeant Commander sighs, patting the young man on the shoulder.

“Couldn’t one of the scientist heroes study them?” Theus curiously asks. He cringes when his leader rudely smacks him upside the head.

The arrogant hero shakes his head and laughs. “You’re fairly new to superheroing, young man. Don’t you know that any hero who investigates a monster or a villain’s technology will have turn evil themselves? It’s in the rulebook. Now, we really need to send someone out there to stop it. Put your hand down, Theus. You’re still in your probation period, so we can’t send you into a fight without supervision.”

“Then lets all go!” Theus impatiently yells, casting a glance around the crowded room. “There are over one hundred superheroes in this one city. Why can we only work together when our specific enemies team up or if the villain has been planning for at least a few years? I nearly died trying to take my archenemy last week while Skullchest was thwarting a bank robbery two doors down from me. I fucking saw him waving at me while I was fighting.”

“It would be chaos and destruction if we worked together like that,” Princess Matilda angrily declares as she adjusts her uncomfortable corset. Her stiletto heels clack on the floor as she approaches Theus. “This group has rules, boy. If we worked together all the time on every job then people wouldn’t know which hero was feuding with which villain. We would have to share reporters because it wouldn’t make much sense for each of us to have our own reporter at that point. Not to mention some of us are too powerful to bother with street crime.”

The room shakes as the mutant rhino knocks down a skyscraper and fires a purple beam from its mouth. The beam disintegrates a nearby library, the brief sound of screaming heard before the end.

“This has gone on long enough,” Sergeant Commander declares, reaching into his desk. He pulls out a deck of cards and shuffles them. “Everyone take a card and the lowest number has to go out there. The highest number gets to swoop in at the last second to save the day and take credit.”

A sonic boom shatters the windows and startles the gathering of heroes. They look outside in time to see a glowing man punch the rhino monster in the face, sending it soaring over the buildings. It lands in the nearby ocean and rises with an angry snort. The glowing man unfurls six wings of pure energy before swooping in. He grabs the monster by the horn and easily lifts him out of the water. With a brief spin, the mysterious hero hurls the rampaging beast into the sun.

“He can’t do that!” Sergeant Commander shouts while feebly pointing. “A hero can’t just show up in this city and start saving the day. He needs to join us and follow the strict rules. That is entirely unacceptable!”

Everyone cringes when Sergeant Commander is knocked out by Theus’s electrified punch to his face. The young hero starts up his motorcycle and takes a final, pitying look at the gathered heroes. “I think I’m going to be a sidekick. Later, jackasses.”

Pinterest and Trading

untitledThe above is what you see on an Amazon page to help spread the word.  E-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.  The first one is relatively useless these days.  Facebook is useful for some and horrible for others and the same can be said of Twitter.  Still, those two have a bigger public image than the one that I want to talk about.

Pinterest is supposed to be one of the hottest social media sites and it requires little effort on an author’s part.  Make an account, walk away, and pin off the sites without having to return.  Maybe you go back to make sure you aren’t pinning something for the 5th time like I did with Beginning of a Hero.  It’s a rather odd platform and I’m not certain how useful it is.  Yet many artists have a Pinterest account and I see my friends all over it at times.  So, maybe we should try to consciously use it like we do with blog posts.

Here is what I’m suggesting in steps:

  1. I make a pin on my account for each author’s book or an artist’s chosen work.
  2. They make a pin on their account for each of my books,  Beginning of a Hero and Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.

Maybe we can start a trend here and get a Pinterest trade going like old baseball cards.  It has no risk to it, so what do we have to lose.  Just make a comment with your book’s title and I’ll pin it before the end of the day.  If you want to wander the comments later and pin people yourself then go right ahead.  Let’s give this social media site a test run.

On this same vein, anybody want to swap guest posts?

What Do You Look for in a Romance?

Romance HumorThis is not my genre and I barely get it to function in my own books.  I think.  I’ve glossed over romance, but I think I gravitate toward lust or awkward beginnings.  Not the smoothest romantic plotlines, but it’s better than nothing.

There are so many varieties of romance that you can put into your story and it seems some kind of romance turns up in every series.  Even a one-night stand needs something behind it like lust, loneliness, or spite.  You’re writing characters to be believable, so you need to factor in their social relationships.  Again, this is not my area of expertise or knowledge, so I’ll get to the point.

I like romances to be natural, which is probably why the awkward stumbling romance appeals to me.  That feels like how most relationships begin and move on until the wrinkles are ironed out.  Sure, you have your smooth James Bond characters, but I don’t really believe many of those exist.  I’ve met one or two smooth operators, but even they would come across a ‘target’ that they couldn’t sweep into the bedroom.  I have to admit that watching people like that fail is highly entertaining.

Now, I can get behind a love at first sight story or one that runs surprisingly smoothly at the beginning.  Those exist and they can work for a series as long as the author challenges the relationship.  Throw in doubt, loss, betrayal, and whatever you can think of to test the characters.  Make them work for the happy ending even if they got a happy beginning.

So, what do you look for in a romantic plotline?  Do you stay away from them entirely?  Is erotica the best kind of romantic plotline?

Rise of the Sequel and a Free Weekend

Legends of Windemere: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower is doing good as it nears the weekend.  It showed up on Goodkindles, but nothing on Novelspot and AskDavid.com.  So, some of the advertising is kicking in.  Hopefully the free weekend for Legends of Windemere: Beginning of a Hero helps.

I found that most sites for free book promotions require a week to 48 hours notice and a lot of them don’t guarantee perfect timing on your book’s ad release.  That is unless you pay money to push yourself to the front of the line.  So, I went with the following site for it because they have you set it up the day you’re free and you go up immediately:

Snickslist.com

So, it’s going to be interesting to see how the free weekend goes for my book and how Prodigy of Rainbow Tower does.  Now back to my regularly scheduled morning of cursing the alarm clock.

To Hear that Song in My Heart

I played a lot of videogames in my youth and many of them were platformers and rpgs.  That’s not really important.  One thing that always struck me was the music in a lot of these games.  The video above is from Illusion of Gaia, which was one of my favorites and it still brings a tear to my eye when I hear it.  I think I remember all the fun and the adventure and just everything about this game.

Here’s another song that I always pause to hear all the way through when it comes on:

I’ll freely admit that I’m kind of dancing to this music and fighting the urge pretend to wield a magical whip against evil creatures.  Anyway, I guess my nostalgia amped up since I put Castlevania: Symphony of the Night into my Pandora station.  I’ve heard that, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Chrono Trigger, and so many others.  It’s amazing how these songs pull me back in time.

So, anybody have odd theme songs from shows and games that pull the back in time?  Maybe I’ll do a montage post later in the week for everyone.
