A Poetic Proposal by Julian Froment

A Poetic Proposal

‘A Poetic Proposal’ by debut author Julian Froment is a journey of love. Dedicated to that one special woman.

This is a collection of poems that plumb the very depths of that deepest of emotions, LOVE. Running counter to this is the on-going theme of angst and heartbreak that is present when two beings that are destined to be one are separated by distance, and in this case a rather large, wet ocean.

This collection progresses chronologically from initial meeting to final proposal of marriage, taking the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride of highs and lows. The reality of the author and his intended living half-lives, together, then apart, together, then apart, is clearly evident throughout the course of this collection.

On Gossamer Wings

On gossamer wings,
On gossamer wings,
My heart it flies to you.
To be together,
‘till the end of days,
Is all that’s left to do.

Flying high,
‘cross the ocean blue,
To where it now belongs.
Cradled within,
A soul so true,
Amidst angelic song.

And soon now,
Oh, so very soon,
The body shall be along.
To join the heart,
To fill the void,
Back where I belong.

Review Highlights from Amazon

‘Reading this collection of poems made me feel like I was eavesdropping on the world’s most romantic marriage proposal’ … ‘If you are looking for love poems to share with your own lover, these are just the poems’ … ‘After reading this collection, I was ready to say ‘I do’ myself’ – Pamela Beckford

’The poems in this book are very romantic, emotional, well-written, and thought out well’ … ‘This is romantic poetry at its best’ – Chris McMullen

‘The poet freely admits that this is about his love life and dedicated to his lady, so you know you’re getting an insight into something private. That brings an interesting dimension to the poems because you know there’s a living, breathing story behind them’ – Charles E Yallowitz

A Hero Who Cries

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

This week I’m going to be discussing various themes and emotions that are within the next book Legends of Windemere: Curse of the Dark Wind.  As The Compass Key proved, delays seem to happen and I’d rather be clean than quick when it comes to this.  If anything, this gives people a taste of what’s to come.

A complaint had been made several times over the course of the series.  This was in regards to Luke Callindor and his ‘strength’.  Many people see him as the only central character, so they get annoyed when he is overshadowed by the others in terms of power.  This I’ll touch on in another post, but it leads into another complaint that always seems to turn up alongside it: a crying hero.

Luke demonstrates that he isn’t a cold-hearted warrior and is still rather immature as far as our traditional heroes go.  If he loses a friend or fails, he gets depressed and has even cried on a few occasions.  This seems to be a big ‘no-no’ for some reason, which has me curious as to why.  Nyx and Sari have been brought to tears just as often and nobody bats an eye.  Luke bawls after a heart-breaking event or needs to be consoled and he’s suddenly labeled as a ‘weak hero’.  This has led to him becoming a more emotionally open character, which makes him even more susceptible to getting hurt.

So, what does this have to do with the next book?  Well, Luke isn’t going to be at his emotional best here.  Events will push him to points where he’ll have childish outbursts and the truth is that this seems more natural for him.  He puts on this strong, brave front for most of the series, but imagine how hard it is to maintain that when you’re losing friends and feeling like you’re failing.  Then to get hit with something where you’re made to feel like you’re a burden?

The thing here is that something like this could make Luke come out stronger and that’s what I think people fail to realize.  The fact that he cries isn’t a sign that he’s weak, but that he’s human.  Our hardest moments are what make us grow as long as we don’t let them devour us.  Personally, I think it should be the same for fictional heroes.  Villains are routinely attacking a hero’s emotions because those are so fragile and no amount of armor or powers can really defend them.  That’s why the accusation that Luke is weak because he cries, mopes, whines, and shows that he’s upset is rather strange.  Would he be stronger if he was emotionally numb, perpetually angry, or let everything fester in his heart to explode later?

So, what do you think about heroes who cry and show emotion?  Do you think they’re weak?

EXCERPT:

“You couldn’t sleep either?”

At the whisper, I looked up from struggling to lace my boots with trembling hands. My master stepped into my dormitory room, adding his lamp’s light to my candle.
“Why must I dress as a boy?” I whispered back. Perhaps I was not so buxom, but I doubted I’d fool anyone. “This makes little sense.”
“Patience.” Master Parselev placed his lamp on my writing-table and checked my packed bags. “They’re gathering at the chapel already. None of us got much sleep, it seems.”
The straw mattress creaked when I stood, boots laced and the woolen hose sagging between my thighs. I ran my fingers around my waist, under my layered cotes, to check the drawstring. “Are these right, Master?” I’d strung the hose and braies together as best I could guess and as memory was my Blessing I had no excuse for failing. Men’s underthings weren’t much concern to me — if I saw such, or more, it was while the man lay bleeding on the surgery table.
“If they stay up, it’s right. Good. This too.” He slung a heavy felt cloak across my shoulders and pinned it on. The hood buried my face in shadows; my blonde braid, even wrapped around my head, would give me away.
I asked, “Master, this journey will be long, won’t it?” Parselev had given me more clothes than I’d ever owned to pack in those bags. All heavy winter woolens, too. “Shouldn’t you go, then?”
He looked down at me, mouth quirking to one side. Master was a greybeard, said to be over a hundred years old, but his kir kept his eyes bright and his face lightly creased. I had only been his apprentice two years. Surely I could not be ready for this.
“It must be you, Kate,” was all he said. He carried one of my bags, and I took the other.
Wreathed in breath-clouds, we crossed the Order’s campus. Low on the horizon, the slim, waxing crescent of the Shepherd hung golden, all seven of his Flock scattered in the sky behind him. He gave the only hint that dawn was coming. The cloak kept me marvelously warm, even in the chilly breeze. No frost this morning, not yet, but it was only a few weeks off.
Master un-bolted the side gate and led me to the door of the Grand Chapel. Horses waited on the grass, many horses chewing at their bits and shaking their heads, most of them with knights in the saddles. The knights’ black tabards, worn over suits of mail, had a white horse embroidered on the right shoulder and two gold stars on the left, marking them knights and Prince’s Guard as well. Kite shields and bucket helms hung on their saddles, in easy reach.
Several of the horses stood with empty saddles, collectively held by a couple of pageboys, and that gave me pause. I’d never been on a horse; I was only a peasant girl. But it could not be so awful, I told myself, so I gripped my cloak a little tighter and followed Master Parselev inside.
My new boots rang too loudly in the empty chapel, and when I slowed to lighten my step I fell behind. Only one lamp burned on the high table before the icons, and its light was mostly blocked by those gathered below the two steps. Faces were cast in shadow as they turned toward us — all looming in the dim light, some cloaked like me, others not — and I knew none of them. I kept my head down as I joined my master before them, glad the hood hid my face.
“Not ready, Elect?” one asked, his voice low but strong. “Who’s this?”
“My apprentice will safeguard the travelers,” my master answered. “She has —”
“What?” The man stepped closer, his shoulders blocking out the light.
“Majesty, she’s my finest student.” Parselev put up a hand when the stranger reached for my hood.
My knees trembled as the word echoed in my head. Majesty. I stood before the king of Wodenberg. Wobbling a bit, I dropped to one knee in obeisance, fist pressed to my heart. The king yanked off my hood while I stared at the flagstone floor, pulse pounding.
“This girl?” the king demanded. “You trust a mere disciple with this mission?”

Give the Gift of Indie for the Holidays

Andra Watkins's avatarThe Accidental Cootchie Mama

No, not Indiana Jones (though I’d take him.) Gift indie books by indie authors and help talented people find an audience for their work.

My suggestions:

Pamela Beckford – If you’re looking for great books of poetry, look no further than Pamela’s work. She has three anthologies available at Amazon, all excellent collections you’ll be proud to give and only 99 cents per downlonad. Check them out HERE.

Katie Sullivan – Know someone who loves all things Irish? Katie Sullivan’s Changelings: Into the Mist will be the perfect gift. It’s available in e-book ($3.99) and paperback (under $14) HERE.

Helena Hann-Basquiat – One of the most prolific writers around, Helena pens her memoirs as herself and writes deliciously creepy stories as Jessica B. Bell. Numerous options abound with her work. Purchase them HERE.

John Howell’s My Grl drips with suspense. For the thriller/spy/suspense lovers on your list, his…

Any Volunteers for a Debut Announcement?

The Newsman from The Muppet Show

The Newsman from The Muppet Show

After a successful Cover Reveal, I was content to let things coast until the debut of:

Curse of the Dark Wind on December 12th!

Then I realized, I should probably do something on the day of the debut.  Yet I didn’t want to organize a blog tour because those are a lot of work and haven’t had any payoff the last two times.  Besides, people are coming to the holiday time and that’s when scheduling things enters a realm of ‘hit, miss, and oops’.  So what did I come up with while I was painting, eating pizza, and cursing at my GPS?

First, I really should update the maps on the GPS.

Second, I’m going to make another call for volunteers for a BlOG BLAST!  It’s really simple this time.  Here are the steps:

  1. Say you’ll help.
  2. I post the ‘CURSE OF THE DARK WIND IS LIVE’ post on Friday morning.
  3. I send an HTML of that post to all volunteers.
  4. You post whenever you want.  It could be as soon as you get it, Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday, etc.  Preferably over the weekend.
  5. I say thank you on the post while recovering my energy from the debut excitement.

So feel free to raise your hand and volunteer for this simple event.  Again, I’ll be sending the info out on Friday since I won’t have the Amazon site until then.  So spread the word and I’ll be mentioning this again on Wednesday and possibly Thursday.  Hope everyone had a fun weekend.
