Curse of the Dark Wind Coming December 12th!!!

Got a big week here!  Two big events are coming!

Read TuesdayThat’s right.  Read Tuesday is coming this week, which means a day of amazing deals on books.  You’ll have FREE, KINDLE COUNTDOWNS, and DISCOUNT COUPONS!  It’s the perfect time to get gifts for your friends and bulk up your library for 2015.  Keep on eye on the site and join in the fun on Tuesday.

I will be making one post a day about this event and how Legends of Windemere will be involved.  I will admit to being a little hesitant about doing this so early because there’s always that one person who missed the word ‘TUESDAY’.  People get excited and they jump the gun.  Not sure if that’s off-sides or neutral zone infraction or if that’s the same thing since I’m too exhausted to think.  I’ve also just learned that I got left in charge of the kid and didn’t get a full warning.

THE OTHER BIG EVENT!

Yup.  LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE: CURSE OF THE DARK WIND will be going live on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th!  That means you’ll be seeing a lot of book-based posts this week and I’ll be prepping the promo stuff that will hopefully carry me into February.  I’m curious to see how this combined with Read Tuesday will affect my books since THE COMPASS KEY didn’t make it beyond the 50’s in Sword & Sorcery.  I think there’s a lot more competition and I’m hitting a mental burn out on the marketing.  Only so many times I can be excited about promoting the same book on FB (not even sure this has an affect) and Twitter (at least I get retweets).  So DARK WIND will certainly re-energize me in that arena.  All I know is that leaving them alone for a while resulted in the books sitting like warts on the Internet toad.  Not even the visible ones.

I won’t be around too much today because I’m helping a friend with something.  This means I’ll be quiet like I was yesterday.  Not sure when I’ll get back this time and I plan on being exhausted.  Whatever energy I have will be directed toward editing because I have the last 3 chapters of Book 8 to finish.  After that, I’ll be doing another low key week with a few outlines, notebook work, and preparing for the debut.  If it goes like last time then I won’t have to worry too much because I got everything done by lunch.  The biggest headache will be the tweets since I won’t be able to schedule them the day before.  It’s for the best and I need time to think about my future anyway.

So, what are the goals?

  1. Promote and make sure my books are ready for Read Tuesday.
  2. Finish editing Book 8.
  3. Prepare and promote CURSE OF THE DARK WIND.
  4. Get a hair cut . . . maybe.
  5. Challenge the mall for a certain movie that comes out on Tuesday.
  6. Notebook work.
  7. Send book summary to Jason for Book 7.
  8. Double check outline for Book 9, which I plan on starting the week before my son’s 2 week break.  That way I get a little head start since I’ll be tackling the special project in February.  It’s a secret and I’m still a little nervous about it.
  9. Sleep.

Free Children’s Book: Runaway Smile

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

I woke up this morning and I had lost my smile and it wasn’t my fault and I looked everywhere and it was gone. Then I met a workman and a king and the best salesman in the world and a clown and no-one wanted to give me theirs. At school, I asked Miss to give me hers, but she gave us a pop quiz instead, and then no-one was smiling and…

3 Questions that Require Some Thought

The following are questions posed by Nicholas Rossis.  Check out his blog and books!

  • Have you noticed any changes in the publishing industry and in the way people treat Indie authors in your short time as an author?

It’s hard to say because I spent my first year getting a feel for everything.  Things do seem to be slower and I’ve seen a lot of Indie Authors quit in 2014 because sales dried up or things stopped being fun.  Yet, I couldn’t say for sure if this is a real change or simply part of a cycle.  I have seen people take it differently.  Some scramble after the current trend in writing, others stick to their guns, and some just walk away.  It’s really been a trying year in terms of holding onto positive thoughts.  At least for me since I’m no longer the new kid who can get readers through ‘hey a fresh face’ curiosity.

In regards to the way people treat Indie Authors, I have seen more people accept the path as a viable author option.  There’s more of an understanding that it’s a risk, books might not be 100% perfect in terms of editing, and you have to sift through junk to find the gems.  Yet there is a growing idea that the independent circuit is where you’ll find some off the beaten path ideas and you could be seeing a future big name in the making.  All that being said, there’s still a lot of snobbishness when it comes to books and you’ll always have people who see Indie Authors as losers that couldn’t cut it in the ‘real publishing world’.

  • What directions do you think things will take in the near future?

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start.

Seriously though, I think we’re going to see a shift and change of the entire industry.  I keep hearing how sales across the board are sluggish, pricing is being debated everywhere, mainstream authors are going indie, and everyone is wondering what the future will hold.  I can’t be sure of where it will go because I only have influence over my own path.  For example, the finale of the Amazon/Hachette fight that has been in the news could change the landscape.  No idea of the impact this change will have on me until it occurs, so I won’t really guess.

I think I’ve started falling into the mindset that I just want to write, publish, and promote my books.  That’s where my interest lies and I have my head in Windemere so much that I couldn’t make any clear future predictions.  Besides, I’m starting to believe that the future is entirely fluid and all one can do is hope they go up.  It does seem to be things will eventually head in that direction, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an upheaval that knocks over the entire checkerboard.

  • Where have you found it’s best to advertise your books?

I always say that this comes down to personal preference.  I use WordPress, Twitter, and Facebook more than anything else.  Out of those, I get more reactions from the first two than the third.  Facebook seems to have a lot of people who see you post in a promo group and they’ll message you asking to promote your book to all their friends.  I got two of those from two different people and they were verbatim, so I really have no idea what’s up with that.

Beyond social media, I have a list of advertising sites that I use.  I always recommend checking them and looking through some entries to get a feel for the site.  For example, AskDavid.com and Goodkindles require personalized blurbs.  Some people find this too much work and others will enjoy it.  Something else to consider is how many books on a site share your genre.  You might think it’s good to go for a site where there aren’t many in your field, but I’ve been finding that it pays to be in an area that has a modest amount of similar genres.  A reason for this is because the more there are, the higher the chance of those genre fans coming to the site.  I mean, if you’re the lone fantasy story on a romance site then you could stand out, but most people will be there for romance.

Here is a link to my page with advertising sites.

Thank you to Nicholas for the fun questions.

Heading into a Busy Weekend

Well that was a successful cover reveal and now it’s all about waiting for the debut on Friday.  Building hype throughout the week and making sure everything is in place.  I’m editing Book 8 and I’ll be hitting the first of the ‘recovered’ chapters.  These are the 3 that were wiped out by a hard drive crash and I had to rewrite.  I’m nervous about what I’ll find in there since part of me thinks I rushed it.  Still I have all weekend to edit . . . wait.  Oops.

Yeah, I’m going to busy most of the weekend.  I have a family birthday party tomorrow and that’s in the dead center of the day.  After that is laundry and maybe some editing.  Sunday is another dead center of the day event, but this is a volunteer thing.  My friends made a call for house painting help and I’m going to lend a hand.  So I’ll finish the editing on Monday and then . . .

Dean Winchester (Just got Seasons 6 and 8 from Cyber Monday!)

Dean Winchester (Just got Seasons 6 and 8 from Cyber Monday!)

Yeah.  I have no idea.  I won’t start writing Book 9 until after CURSE OF THE DARK WIND is out.  Then I’ll have the 2 weeks of son time, so that’ll slow down.  I have some ideas to toy with throughout the week.  I’ll be outlining the future website on Saturday so my friend can tell me what he thinks on Sunday.  That won’t be built until maybe February since I’m still trying to find a host and wrap my head around things.  At least my new author bio is done.  Now I’m rambling.  Off to do other stuff.  Have a fun weekend.

Excerpt 6 from ‘A Poetic Proposal’

Julian Froment's avatarJulian Froment's Blog

So, here we are at the end. The end you say? The end of this weeks featured poems from, ‘A Poetic Proposal’, my collection of poetry dedicated to Ionia. Finally, I hear some of you gasp. Finally the end of reading poems that we have all seen on this blog before. Well of course. Did you think I was going to include those special ones that haven’t appeared here? Of course you didn’t. Those are reserved for readers of the book. Still, I hope that you have enjoyed the poems that have appeared here this week. Remember there are more of the same, and even some that haven’t appeared on the blog, in the book.

This poem appeared previously on the blog not so long ago in July 2014. As a bonus for your patience in reading these posts I have prepared a reading of this poem, one of my…
