Daughter of Monster Maker Fun: Donated by D. Wallace Peach & N.A. Granger #October #Monsters

Welcome back to another Friday of Monster Maker Fun.  Our first 3 critters come from the words submitted by D. Wallace Peach.

Arcanix

A surprisingly large beast found in the sky, the Arcanix has the form and color of a vivid rainbow.  At its two ends are false clouds, which they hide within real ones to give the illusion of it going to the ground.  Being so high up, only people above the cloud cover tend to notice them.  Your average person won’t be able to tell that something is wrong.  The Arcanix has barely any weight, which allows it to stay aloft, but it lacks the power to fight powerful winds.  The best it can do is fuse its cloud pieces to real ones and let itself be taken along.  Don’t let the beauty fool you though because it is a big hazard.  While it looks like a rainbow, it is actually solid and has been known to place its body in front of flying objects.  This would be like hitting a mountain.  Once its prey makes impact, the Arcanix folds itself to dissolve as much as possible.

Zamarikill

Here we have a murderous undead found in urban areas, which gets its name from the shriek it makes before killing.  It looks like a long-haired human with skeletal arms and rotting legs.  The torso is gaunt, but in better condition than the rest of the body.  As for the head, it dangles because of the heavy teeth jutting out of the mouth.  These teeth are double-edged and able to cut through steel, especially thanks to the Zamarikill’s powerful bite force.  Nobody is sure why it says ‘Zamari’ before attacking or how it picks its victims, who come back as simple skeletons.  It is believed that there is only one per territory and all attempts to draw two into the same area have been met with failure.  The closest one has gotten is getting two Zamarikills within sight of each other, but they refused to turn towards one another.  Eliminating this creature garners a few months of piece before another appears from the nearest graveyard.

Malegodrom

Protected by a plated shell, this lumbering plains beast is peaceful and approachable by humans.  Weighing 4 tons, it is nearly impossible to flip over by any predator, so it has no fear from anything it can see.  It can see through its own shell, which is a mottled gray to those outside.  This allows it to stay fully protected as it grazes and sleeps.  The only way for a Malegodrom to become agitated and attack is if something strikes at its exposed underside.  There is limited protection on this part with the extent being a few flexible plates on the stomach.  Even a mole accidentally emerging and bumping into the soft flesh can cause this animal to charge in a panic.  Once they begin moving, it takes hours for them to stop because their skin continues to feel the pressure.  The reason for this fear is because many predators have evolved abilities that allow them to dig and come up beneath the Malegodrom’s shell to devour them from the inside out.  They have no defenses within beyond trying to kill their attacker through dragging.

The following two beasts come from the submissions of N.A. Granger.

Waterpackaloomer

Needing to go across the Falcraz Desert?  Then, you’re going to need a Waterpackaloomer, which is a local domesticated beast.  It is a strange-looking creature that has no face beyond a pair of eyes that move around the flat body.  They resemble a hooded poncho that their owner wears.  They have tiny, needle-like appendages at the edges of their body, which are routinely adding to their mass when on the move.  A Waterpackaloomer’s body is fairly fragile, so it can break down swiftly when used in the harsh desert.  There is a large hump in their middle, which is where they keep a store of water.  They do not drink this, but give it to their host creature through a natural straw found in the hood section.  The reason for this symbiotic relationship is that Waterpackaloomers cannot move on their own, so they need someone to take them into the desert.  This is where they can release breeding threads, which are carried by the wind.

Dirty Ratzenfratz

This creature is named after the alcoholic drink that it’s discoverer was enjoying during the encounter.  It should be noted that this also resulted in many dismissing the finding as a hallucination.  The truth would come out later when the man went in search of the Dirty Ratzenfratz, while completely hammered, and was subsequently eaten.  Thankfully, he live streamed the whole thing.  Beyond this, nothing much is known beyond it being big, colored to resemble the vine-covered trees of its habitat, and being a carnivore.  At least, it is assumed that it is, but many question if this was done out of self-defense.  Since the incident, many have tried to capture the Dirty Ratzenfratz with three hunters disappearing and the rest coming back with destroyed traps.  It is now being suggested that this creature was an alcohol-induced hallucination at first, but its discoverer believed in it so much that it became real.  Evidence for this is simply that its environment does not show any signs of such a large beast existing.

Immortal Wars: Light, Blood, & Tears Part 33

(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue.  This is a sequel to a previous story.  Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s.  While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years.  I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be.  Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin.  To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language.  Enjoy?)

Twenty boring minutes later, the planet guardians show up and are greeted by Cybro saying, “So, how do you want to work this skirmish, Fate?  An unoriginal battle royal or should we divide into groups.  I personally suggest groups because I want to fight you without any interruptions.  Well?”

“That’s new.  Never heard one of you guys try to put a fight in order before.  I’ll fight you while the rest take whoever, or should I say, whatever they want.  Take the first shot, Cybro.  It might be the only one you get,” replies Fate.  Golden lasers start turning the ground around the Mars guardian to dust.  The guardians charge Cybro and the Clan of Fire in order to square off against the three different aliens.

“Shit.  How did I get stuck with the Maviks?” asks Miracle as the six lizards lumber towards her.  One of them opens its mouth and releases a tornado blast that knocks the guardian through a parked moving van.

“You chose them, tomboy.  I got the Palidors.  Let’s have some fun!” exclaims Hydrana.  She freezes one of the aliens by touching it, but two of its friends manage to slice a chunk out of her back.  A pair of ice lances shoot out of the cut and skewer both of the Palidors.  The four remaining creatures fly into the air at top speed and continually dive down at the grounded immortal.

“Ouch.  I severely didn’t need this,” thinks Miracle before one of the cat-like Grunts pounces on her stomach and bares its slobbering fangs.  She can feel its hot breath on her face and it smells like a garbage heap.  The alien is suddenly lifted off the ground and dropped on a nearby pointed fence.

“These things are mine.  Look, Kelly.  You can’t beat the Maviks with your raw strength.  You just don’t have the muscle for it.  Maybe you can create something to help you.  That is your power,” says Infinity when he helps Miracle to her feet.  A Grunt runs at him from behind, but he swiftly ducks the killing slash.  The claw slices through Miracle’s long, black hair instead.  The Earth guardian flips onto the alien and snaps the creature’s neck with his legs.

“I have an idea.  But I need Fate’s help.  Is he still fighting Cybro?”  She looks over to the museum just in time to see Cybro shoot off Fate’s left hand with a pointblank laser.  The blonde guardian stumbles backwards from the pain before jumping onto the cyborg.

“This action is not going to help you, guardian.  You will faint in a matter of seconds.  From what I have heard and seen, you have pushed your healing capabilities to the limit,” states the robot.  Fate quickly punches a big hole in the robot’s jetpack as the maniac flies higher into the air.

Fate carefully crosses a group of important looking wires and drops from the hovering villain.  With a weak, cunning smirk, he groans, “I’ll probably pass out, but you won’t be around to see it happen.  Bye.”

Cybro’s jetpack suddenly goes off and sends him careening wildly over the horizon.  Fate’s hand starts growing back, but the pints of blood are still missing.  The Mars guardian collapses to the ground, which makes him the perfect prey for the approaching, and famished, Maviks.

“You better go and help him, Kelly.  I’m doing fine here and Hydrana will be okay,” orders the Earth guardian, who is swinging a Grunt by its furry tail.  He throws it into one of the diving Palidors, both of which are slammed through the ground by a boiling water blast.

“This idea had better work.  Never tried anything so complicated and powerful before,” mutters Miracle as she sprints toward her injured boyfriend.  As she moves, a robotic bodysuit appears around her slender body.  Its three-fingered arms and toeless legs are extremely powerful and thick.  The torso is a shiny red metal that matches the limbs, but the helmet is light blue and is armed with a close-range flame cannon.  This suit makes Miracle stand at eight feet tall.

“Nice suit!” yells Hydrana as the last Palidor is sliced into pieces by a barrage of ice knives.  She runs after Miracle and jumps into a nearby tree to get some rest and watch the fight that is about to start.

“Don’t get involved, Delila.  I can handle these beasts on my own.  Besides, I think you and Fate have had enough action during this trip.”  The armored Venus guardian leaps in front of the six lizards, all of which give off a low grunt in mild surprise.  When all of them use their hurricane breath at the same time, Miracle is slowly pushed away and the suit’s legs end up leaving deep grooves in the cement.

“Are you sure you can handle them?  I can easily take at least one of them off your hands.”  In response, Miracle barbecues one of the black lizards with her helmet and grabs the open mouths of two more of the beasts.  She gives them a vicious twist, so that their heads neatly come off like plastic bottle tops.

“I said that I could handle them alone.  How’s Eddie doing?” asks the ebony-haired immortal.  She kicks a hole in one of the lizard’s throats, but she is quickly hit by a hard charge from the last two.  Unfortunately, the impact causes her to lose her concentration and the durable armor vanishes.  She loses the increased strength and durability of the suit, which causes Miracle to get pushed down the sidewalk.

“This is not a good thing for me,”  mutters the Venus guardian as she manages to push one of the bigger Mavik’s horns into the smaller one.  The remaining lizard savagely throws back its head and Miracle gets hurled all the way back to the museum entrance.

“Did you actually plan that landing?” laughs the redhead when her friend bounces onto the ground.  Her butt leaves a huge dent in the sidewalk and she sits there getting her bearings for a second.

“No.  But it worked.  Is the last one coming back or running away?” responds Miracle as she gets off her sore butt.  When she turns her head around, she sees that the Mavik is a short block away.  Even with its large weight, the rampaging beast jumps at the red-clothed guardian and attempts to land on her.  Out of nowhere, the lizard is crushed by two large, metal boxing gloves.  Since the beast was directly above her, Miracle gets covered in a few gallons of blue blood, which smells exactly like expensive perfume.

“More slimy crap on me?  I really hate this trip.  Can you clean me off, Delila?”

A heavy shower of warm rain appears over the Venus guardian, which causes the sweet-smelling blood to run off her body and into a nearby sewer drain.  Hydrana evaporates the remaining water while saying, “You sure cut that one pretty close.  But at least you stopped those things before they tried to eat Eddie.  His hand is back and he’s coming to.  Give him a minute and then he can talk.  Both of us have weakened regenerative abilities thanks to all the fights we had before.”

“I can’t wait that long.  There’s this question he keeps trying to ask me, but something always stops him.  First, your rampage and now the Clan of Fire.”  Without warning, the ground beneath Miracle turns into a giant serpent that grabs her in its coils.  Before Kelly can even shout for help, she is yanked under the ground and quietly dragged away.  All that is left behind is a gaping hole in the ground and a few scraps of golden snakeskin.

“What just happened?” asks Infinity when he runs over to the others.

“I have to tell you?  Some large serpent just took Kelly into the sewers.  Looked like it used to be a bunch of subway cars, so I think Tegam is playing.  Watch over Fate and tell him what just happened when he’s okay.  I’ll go and get her back,” the Neptune guardian says before she jumps into the hole and disappears into the gloom.

“This is terrible,” mentions Fate once he gets to his feet.  He was awake for most of the fight, but there was not enough blood in his body to allow any movement.

“It’s a whole lot worse than you originally thought, guardians.  Catch me if you can, Eddie,” laughs Adriana, who is hanging upside-down in a nearby tree.  She drops to the ground and breaks through the glass museum doors.

“Now, what do we do?” questions Infinity.  Blue and white feathers cover his body as he once again changes into his stronger bird form.

“I’ll go after her by myself.  Our fight is very personal.  Cybro won’t be anymore trouble and the girls have Tegam occupied.  Or is it the other way around?  Anyway, it’s up to you to hold off Draveon,” orders Fate as he rolls to his feet.

“Where is the walking weapon?” caws the Earth guardian.

The blond immortal is already running toward the shattered doorway, but manages to yell, “He’s right behind you!”

“Son of a bitch.  This is going to hurt.”  The fist feels like a titanium battering ram against his soft feathers.  Infinity hears some of his hollow ribs snap before he can manage to get safely airborne.

“I wonder how my powers will twist your alternate form.  Take a shot at me and we’ll both find out, Steven,” bellows Draveon.  The enormous bird dives down at the immortal, so he can take a few pecks at the red-eyed man.  Draveon’s birthright powers don’t do a single thing to stop the sharp beak and long talons.

Monsters of Windemere: Sjotroll

Skogtroll by Theodor Kittelsen

This is a beast from The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.  That’s where it’s going to stay because it’s certainly a ‘one time’ use.  Given its origin and role in Windemere, there’s no other way to do it.

The Sjotroll is two things.  First, it’s a creature whose name I have a lot of trouble saying out loud.  My tongue and teeth declare war on each other.  Second, I designed this to be the original troll species of Windemere.  We’re talking way back when the gods behind creation were fairly deranged and simply didn’t give a damn.  Want a predator?  This giant that merges with the earth, has four arms with six claws each, absorbs wood, and has suction cup tentacles in its mouth.  Oh, and it’s head had dead eyes and a mosquito-like nose just like the modern trolls.  I’m going with horror fuel here, but that might only be because I picture it really well in my eyes.

The reason I made this beast was because Ichabod needed a reason to deal with the yellow ogres.  His stories always have a ‘title first’ creation, so I had to figure out what these other creatures were doing.  I liked the idea of this dangerous beings working towards reviving something even worse.  So, I went with my reliable super predator of the troll and started making it more dangerous.  All of it was made up as I went along because I only had the thought of making something big and powerful.  I switched things in and out until all the pieces I had in my had fit together.  At one point, the Sjotroll was a water creature, but that made no sense with it being a forest adventure.  Sometimes you have to keep the terrain and change the monster.

I should probably discuss the name because that’s rather eye-catching.  It’s something I swore I found while researching all the types of trolls in mythology.  Spent an hour going through sites to find it again, but I think my memory is playing tricks on me.  The closest thing I found was the word ‘sjotrungnis’, which is from a Nordic poem.  It was on the Wikipedia page with the translation of ‘dwelling-Rungnir’, which may be a stone giant defeated by Thor.  Given I made this beast on the fly years ago, I’m assuming I took the ‘sjo’ and slapped it on ‘troll’.  I think I know myself enough to realize I depend on that trick a lot.

The Sjotroll is something that I probably shouldn’t pull out again unless I can find special circumstances.  They’ve all been sealed because they’re massive eating machines that merge with the very earth.  It’s too powerful and would have devoured the earlier ecosystems of Windemere.  I can’t see the gods and goddesses letting those things remain after they lost a bunch of creations to them.  So, they’d be stashed in the earth with the expectation of later use.  Then, the Sjotroll was forgotten to history and only become important when someone wants to cause trouble.  Still, it was nice giving some history to a monster species that I use so much.

October Questions 3: Hiding in Plain Sight

War of Nytefall

Welcome to another Questions 3 revolving around War of Nytefall.

This time we’re going to try to connect to Clyde’s dream.  For this, you have to imagine you’re one of the Dawn Fangs.  His dream is for Dawn Fangs and mortals to exist together without fear and violence.  To do this, he’s had many of his people live in mortal cities and be out in the open.  Not revealing their vampiric nature, but making friends and acting like average citizens.  The plan is that enough time will pass for him to reveal their presence and show they’ve been peacefully living among mortals for years.  This isn’t easy, especially with the war going on.  It also has a big chance of backfiring, but that’s besides the point.

You are a Nytefall vampire and have been placed in a city to blend in.  Please keep in mind that taking actions that risk exposure of the Dawn Fangs is met with being pulled back to Nytefall.  If mortals are killed then there’s a high chance of being executed.

  1. What kind of job would you have to blend in?
  2. How social will you be?
  3. What will you do if someone becomes suspicious?

Goal Post: Pass the Seltzer and Hand Me a Slice

You know it’s been a week and going to be a weekend when I write this up on a Thursday and schedule it.  Sure, something may have happened yesterday, but I’ll add it if it’s anything I can or should announce.

Three day weekend is here and I’m hanging with a friend to goof off for a bit.  Some serious stuff being done, but we both need the time to chill out.  Video games, movies, pizza, and maybe a little alcohol.  Nothing major beyond decompressing and getting ready for next week.  After all, this one was crazy busy and the next one is going to be shorter for school and work, so it’ll be the same.  Amazed that we’re so close to the end of the year too, which has me bugging.

Why am I bugging out so much about this?  I have less than 2 months to finish editing War of Nytefall: Eulogy, write the blurb, give it to a reader, and set up a month of posts for December.  I finished the hand editing this week, so I’ll start putting things into the computer soon.  Not sure how long this will take, but I’m hoping to get it done before the end of October and send the manuscript off.  Then, I’ll work on the blurb.  I can get posts done when I have a little time, but not enough to do editing.  The topics might be a bit flimsy for my taste since I don’t know where to go with this being a major finale with a lot of twists and turns.  We’ll have to see how things go.  The character interview idea already full flat because not many people participated, so I switched it to a weekly promo for the whole series.

Of course, finishing the editing leaves me with no project during my off periods at work.  I could just stare at the ceiling and recover my energy given this week.  Instead, I grabbed a new notebook and decided to tackle ‘Phi Beta Files’. I even found my old notes, which make absolutely no sense.  Is this a 6 book series done in short story style or each volume has a chapter-by-chapter story?  Can I have 4 main characters and a support structure of nearly 12 characters that come and go?  Are there really no women in the hero list for this series?

To explain ‘Phi Beta Files’, this is about a mercenary squad academy and the heroes are a team of 4 instead of the usual 6.  They’re screw-ups, miscreants, and expected to wash out, but they find ways to survive.  It was like a combination of ‘Animal House’ and ‘Starship Troopers’ with a fantasy setting.  This is also based off my college days, so the characters all have a real-world component.  The crew I hang out with was predominantly male since we were doing a mock fraternity shtick.  So, the group ended up being that way in the book, which has me wondering if I should do some gender-swapping here.  Feels kind of insulting to whoever I pick though.  Maybe I’ll figure it out over the weekend since my friend is from that crew.

Time with my son was usually schoolwork because he had to get as much done as possible before Friday.  He got his second Covid shot though, which went smoothly.  He was scared, but made it through and was happy to get it.  Even happier to get a peach Slurpee afterwards.  Not much else happened on this front since we had so much work to do and the weather was good enough for him to play outside with the other kids.  One of the best parts about autumn is my son being able to run around outside with the neighbors without getting overheated, drenched, or frozen.

Television was okay.  I watched the last 12 episodes of ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’, which was kind of sad.  The series got a little messy during Season 4, but I held in there.  The ending felt a bit rushed too, but there was closure.  I moved on to ‘How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord’, which is another anime.  I didn’t expect it to be so perverted.  Season 1 was okay because there was enough action and comedy for the fan-service to be overshadowed in my mind.  Season 2 seemed to depend a lot on fan-service, which had me putting the series to background noise.  Easier to do that than to go through the streaming service to delete all of the episodes.  Not sure what I’ll tackle next though.

I need to find a day to reveal the War of Nytefall: Eulogy cover and ask for more blog tour volunteers.  Doesn’t look like weekend posts hit very well.  So, I might pick a Thursday afternoon to do this.  Not this week since I might be too busy to respond to comments until the evening.  Best to wait a bit since I have time.

Goals of the week:

  1. Have a fun weekend.
  2. Help my son catch up on school work.
  3. Work hard at work.
  4. Start computer editing War of Nytefall: Eulogy
  5. Start making December posts about War of Nytefall: Eulogy.  Any questions?
  6. Get pizza at some point.
  7. Start working on ‘Phi Beta Files’.
  8. Sleep is nice.
  9. Remember what I know what I’m forgetting.
