Questions 3: Summoners and the Summoned

Digimon

We’ll see how this goes.  I couldn’t think of another way to end this topic since it’s fairly simple until you get into specific details.  Let’s try to answer questions from both sides of the coin here.

  1. How would you feel if you were summoned to a fantasy world to go on an adventure?
  2. What would make you useful if you were summoned for an adventure?
  3. What type of person or creature would you summon and why?

The title says it all.  Enjoy these funnies while you either celebrate the holiday or wonder why Americans need a holiday to overeat.  To be fair, we also need this holiday to maintain our traditions of family tensions and mental illness.  Enjoy.  (All taken from Google Image Search.)

7 Tips to Using Summoned Characters

The Shield Hero

Summons can fall into two categories.  One is filled with beasts that follow orders and usually appear for a specific, temporary purpose.  They are summoned multiple times as they are needed.  The other category is where you would find characters who have been called from another location or dimension.  They take a role as either as the main hero or support.  Both are very different from each other with the first being easier to do than the second.  After all, beasts tend to not require as much depth, especially if they go away within a few pages of appearing.

So, these tips are primarily for the second group.  Only brought up the first to make sure people knew what I was thinking of here.

  1. If your summons is a main character, you need to have a clear idea of why they have been called.  This doesn’t mean telling the reader and characters the reason, but to have a general idea of why they are in their situation.  Even if they were an accidental summons, there had to be a reason for the ritual to go off in the first place.  This helps give the characters some urgency and focus.  Otherwise, they’re just wandering around without any path.
  2. If the character is summoned from another dimension, they shouldn’t know exactly what is going on.  A current trend is for a hero to be pulled into a video game or story that they know about.  This gives them an advantage, but it also erases all sense of tension if they are 100% right.  Having them know nothing or some of their knowledge be wrong helps in making them the avatar for the audience.  Otherwise, there’s very little sense of exploration in a new world, which is something that fantasy stories highly benefit from.
  3. A summoned character doesn’t always have to want to go home.  If they came from a boring or painful life, they may be more inclined to stay.  The idea of being sent home after their adventure could be a source of fear.  Considering if they want to stay or go from the beginning of their adventure.  This will guide all of their actions and establish how close they get to people.  Why be friends with people if you’re planning on leaving as soon as possible?
  4. The summoner and summoned do not always have to get along at first.  Remember, this character has been yanked from their life to follow orders.  There could be some resistance if the summoner isn’t polite or nice.  It could result in a spell being put on the summoned figure to keep them in line.  That adds to their shaky relationship, which can either improve, degrade, or stay the same depending on where you want them to go.  Much of this part will decided on the reason for the summoning.  Save the world?  Maybe they’ll be okay.  Needing a person who can do their chores? Not a good start.
  5. A person summoned from Earth won’t always know everything about technology.  In fact, most people won’t be able to recreate things without the help of prior training or the Internet.  So, a guy summoned to a world of magic with an Associate’s in medical coding and has only handled a gun in Call of Duty won’t be creating sniper rifles unless magic is involved.  You need to give these characters the right background for these skills.  Otherwise, they have to find ways to copy technology using the magic in the world.
  6. Summoned heroes don’t ALWAYS have to be involved in romances.  Is it because they come from Earth and shower more often than those in fantasy worlds?
  7. Characters who are summoned tend to be special in some fashion.  It could be that they appear with unique gear, special powers, or have knowledge that give them an edge.  If they are completely normal and no better than the locals then readers might not thing there is any reason for them to be involved.  Whether it be at the start or down the road, they need to stand out for some reason.  There has to be a justification for why they were called to action.  You can even have people questioning their presence if they aren’t perceived as useful.

Author Month: The Funniest Oops

Google Image Search

This one will be pretty easy.  We all make mistakes.  Some typos are memorable and haunt us for the rest of our lives.  Others are easily forgotten.  Clearly, it’s more fun to talk about the first category.

So, what are some of mine?

  • ‘Clear across the clearing’.  My editor threatened to fly to my house and beat me with her Kindle over this one.
  • ‘Kicked in the grown’ happened a few times.
  • ‘We have to travel across the tomatoes’ . . . I was yelling out groceries while writing.  Stuff like this happened a lot in the past.

There was one that I did a lot in Do I Need to Use a Dragon?, but I can’t remember what it was at this time.  It was a bad one too.  There was a phrase I a few times and I kept spelling a word wrong.  It became dirty.  If I remember it, I’ll add it.

So, what are your funniest typos?

The Tradition of Summoning Servants

Saber from Fate Series

In fantasy, it’s fairly common for servants to be summoned.  It could be for battle, healing, terrorizing, and the list keeps going.  You see it in books, cartoons, and video games with a countless number of systems.  The methods to summoning can range from mundane to pure evil.  It always results in the same thing though.  You get a sentient being to do your bidding.

I was thinking about this concept when I was watching a ‘Fate/Zero’ series.  The story is that there are 7 ‘wizards’ and each one has to summon a servant for a contest to claim the Holy Grail.  There are seven different classes with each wizard getting one of them, which is what made me realize this stems from a video game.  The mechanics aren’t important here because the point is that beings from time were being pulled to be worries.  Each one was granted powers too.  Honestly, I don’t understand it as well as I should, but the series can get confusing.  That’s another reason why I wanted to consider this topic for the entire week.

Summoning shouldn’t be easy to do within the mechanics of the world.  That is unless everyone is able to do it.  If only a handful are going to have this power, it has to be complicated or rare.  Maybe the materials are hard to find or a person has to be born with a gift.  Another option is that summoning is a lost art, which only a few select groups have managed to retain.  Even in a world of magic, there should be some level of amazement and specialness to summoning.  Imagine the power it would take to pull a being from another world or timeline.  It should be immense.

Summoning differs from magic in that you aren’t throwing out a basic attack, but conjuring a being for a certain amount of time.  They have their own thoughts and personality as well as some level of independence.  A summoner can order them around and they may obey without question, but they also have some ability to adapt.  That’s if they aren’t independent and uncontrolled to being with.  Remember the Isekai topic from September?  Many times the protagonist goes to another world because they were summoned.  This is a niche, but it shows the flexibility of the summoning concept and how it can be more than a cool addition to a battle.

From my own experience, I’ve noticed that summoning in video games tends to be a special power given to heroes.  In books and cartoons, you see it more often in the hands of villains.  The biggest use is when the antagonist’s goal is to summon a powerful entity to do their bidding and destroy the world.  It’s usually an ancient evil that they want to bring back, so the summoning doubles as a resurrection.  Having this does open the door for smaller level summons, but it’s still done by villains. I think part of this is because many authors immediately think of demon summoning and don’t branch the practice out to other options.

I guess it makes sense that characters would be evil when summoning servants in most fantasy settings.  This tends to happen with a level of enslavement, so it has dark and controlling undertones.  Can you write a summoning system without it?  It’s been done plenty of times such as when the summoned hero is the main character.  It’s just that people don’t always think of that unless it’s a core point of the story.  If it’s just an ability that can be learned or appears at times, many gravitate towards having it be used for evil instead of good.  At least, in Western fantasy because I can now think of several times in anime/manga where heroes summon things.  Guess it could be a cultural thing too.

So, what are your thoughts on summoning in fiction?  Have any favorite summoning systems?

The Umbrellabirds! (Sounds like a Decent Rock Band)

Been looking for some birds to do, but so many species have tons of subspecies.  So, they seemed to massive to tackle.  Then, I found these guys who were named by Sir Alfred Wallace in the 1800’s.

Umbrellabirds get their names from their distinctive hoods.  There are only three species and two are endangered due to habitat loss.  These solitary birds are found in the rainforests of Central and South America.  Umbrellabirds aren’t great fliers and can really only go for short distances.  This is due to their larger size, which forces them to usually bounce among the branches.  To be clear, they aren’t huge, but they are big (14-19.5 inches; .77-1.26 lbs; 26-28 in wingspan) for their body structure.

These birds have a wattle, which can inflate to create a booming call.  This has earned them the nickname of ‘Piper-Bird’ from Native Americans.  Umbrellabirds have one of the deepest songs of their genus, which helps them stand out in the wild.  At least, for bird watchers/listeners.

Some other facts:

  • Umbrellabirds are altitudinal migrators, which means they migrate up and down mountains instead of north/south.
  • Females lay a single egg, which takes a month to hatch.  Sometimes, they will have two.
  • They hide their heads and feet while sleeping to make themselves look like a lifeless pile of feathers.
  • They are also called bullbirds.

That’s really it.  Couldn’t find much else that was shocking, so let’s get to the pictures and videos.
