Pain to the right side
Every time I turn left
I despise stiff necks

This stiff neck hit me out of nowhere yesterday.  Guess I stretched the wrong way and the wrong time while in the shower.  Ibuprofen seems to have no effect, so I’m working with icy hot and a heating pad.  I’m hoping I can work with the heating pad on my shoulder or that my morning shower loosens this up.  This has to be one of the most maddening pains in the world.

And Lo! Another Goal Post Didst Get Posted!

Capybara

Capybara

Two weeks until the debut of Allure of the Gypsies.  So, go buy Beginning of a Hero and Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  Then call in sick to work until you finish.  If you’re too responsible and mature for that, spend the day hanging out with sick toddlers.  Help the community and earn yourself the reward of disease.

I got halfway through Chapter 2 of Curse of the Dark Wind, so I’m hoping to get further this week.  Probably not considering I have ‘parent/teacher’ meeting on Tuesday and planning for the book debut.  I set up all my November posts, so those are no longer a problem.  Hype week is shaping into this:

  • 24th will be Goal Post and announcement of Goodreads Giveaway for first two novels.
  • 25th will be Cover Reveal, post about family theme, and a location poem.
  • 26th will be Sari poems, interview, and gypsy post.
  • 27th will be Kalam & Isaiah poems, interview, and Fireskin post.
  • 28th will be Callindor family poem, interview with Luke’s mom, and brief Callindor history.
  • 29th will be the first scene of Allure of the Gypsies divided into 3 parts over the day.
  • 30th will be a post about the Twubs chat and a character listing to help those who haven’t read the book.

I’ll be scattering some posts about volunteering for the Cover Reveal and Blog Tour as well as reminding people about the Twubs chat.  Hopefully, it isn’t just me sitting there by my lonesome for 2 hours.

So, goals of the week:

  1. Continue writing Curse of the Dark Wind.
  2. Continue asking for volunteers for hype events.
  3. Make sure all advertising sites and materials are prepared.
  4. Get a little more sleep.
  5. Ponder the secret behind ceiling fan hypnosis.
  6. Stop staring at ceiling fans
  7. Maybe write up the promo info for the 4th book if I feel inspired.

I’m hoping this is a low-stress week, so I can rest up for hype week and the debut.  On December 1st, I’m going to have to post my own part of the blog tour, send the email out to everyone with blog tour info and their posting date, and submit to all the promotional sites.  The posts never go up at the same time, so it creates a scattering around the month and gets it off my plate.  Still working toward one of them though, but the involves the first two books for now.  Now, I’m off to slowly wander through this day.

Story Overview

Nicolas Deschanel was betrayed by the only two people who matter to him. Their disloyalty stung and an overwhelming sense of loss lingers. Nicolas has lived the high life professing to not have a care in the world, and now this illusion is calling his bluff.

Determined to take control of an existence now devoid of purpose, he sojourns to his family’s holiday home on the Gulf of Mexico. Resolved more than depressed, he plans to privately say goodbye to a world which no longer needs him. Of questionable fortune, he finds a woman, Mercy, sitting alone on the shore at eventide. Nicolas is conflicted between an obligation to help, and annoyance at her intrusion.

Mercy has many layers of secrets. Deepest of all, she cannot tell this Child of Man she is thousands of years old and very powerful. In her presence, Nicolas’ own dormant powers begin to surface, triggering a sequence of events that cause both of their lives to spiral further out of control. When old friends from both sides come to help, together they all learn a painful truth: new life can only begin once you’ve set free what means the most.

Read Tuesday 20 Questions for . . . RLL

rt-logo-21-22[1]

In honor of Read Tuesday I have participated in a 20 Question exchanged with RLL.  He has posted my answers on his blog and I’m posting his answers here.  He has already answered these questions here…STEPHANIE STAMM and given the same questions different answers here…MISHA BURNETT.  Check out his answers and give a look at the links at the end:

1. Fire rages in your house. Everyone is safe, but you. You decide to smash through the window, shielding your face with a book. What is the book?

It’s a tome grabbed at random, in the hope that I discover that book’s name simply by surviving the fire, the smoke, the smashed window, and the landing. I need a surprise, or a laugh at the inappropriate title, when I stand up.

2. Asleep in your rebuilt house, you dream of meeting a dead author. But not in a creepy stalkerish way, so you shoo Mr Poe out of the kitchen. Instead, you sit down and have cake with which dead author?

For once I accidentally named a living writer. Must try harder. Dorothy Parker. I know she’s dead – her ashes being a source of much discussion.

3. Would you name six essential items for writers? If, you know, cornered and threatened with torture.

Cynicism. Doubt. Negativity. Obsession. Rain against the windows. Persistence.

4. Who’d win in a fight between Count Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster? If, you know, you were writing that scene.

This fight occurs in darkness, and, come sunrise, Dracula is nowhere to be seen. Frankenstein wins on points.

5. It’s the end of a long and tiring day. You are still writing a scene. Do you see it through to the end, even though matchsticks prop your eyelids open, or do you sleep on it and return, refreshed, to slay that literary dragon another day?

If the characters have complex names, it’s time to stop typing and sleep.

6. You must introduce a plot-twist. Evil twin or luggage mix-up?

Luggage mix-up with evil twin in the foreground, but that’s all camouflage for the real plot-twist. Killer Blancmange.

7. Let’s say you write a bunch of books featuring an amazing recurring villain. At the end of your latest story you have definitely absitively posolutely killed off the villain for all time and then some. Did you pepper your narrative with clues hinting at the chance of a villainous return in the next book?

If the villain is capable of existing far beyond time, then killing the villain for all time and then some may not be long enough.

8. You are at sea in a lifeboat, with the barest chance of surviving the raging storm. There’s one opportunity to save a character, drifting by this scene. Do you save the idealistic hero or the tragic villain?

I save Doctor Jekyll. Hang on…

9. It’s time to kill a much-loved character – that pesky plot intrudes. Do you just type it up, heartlessly, or are there any strange rituals to be performed before the deed is done?

I plant a hip-flask in the breast-pocket. A strange place for a hip-flask to rest. Unless a bullet lodges there at the appointed time.

10. Embarrassing typo time. I’m always typing thongs instead of things. One day, that’ll land me in trouble. Care to share any wildly embarrassing typing anecdotes? If, you know, the wrong word suddenly made something so much funnier. (My last crime against typing lay in omitting the u from Superman.)

This relates more to the internet than text files housing chapters. A gremlin lurks on the internet, prepared to strike at will and without fear of retribution. That little bastard takes my well-engineered statement and photocopies it, creating two entries I can never seem to delete.

This relates more to the internet than text files housing chapters. A gremlin lurks on the internet, prepared to strike at will and without fear of retribution. That little bastard takes my well-engineered statement and photocopies it, creating two entries I can never seem to delete.

11. I’ve fallen out of my chair laughing at all sorts of thongs I’ve typed. Have you?

Some of those thongs are only rude in the minds of the crude. For that reason, I cannot exhibit those thongs here.

12. You take a classic literary work and update it by throwing in rocket ships. Dare you name that story? Pride and Prejudice on Mars. That kind of thing.

All Quiet on the Martian Front.

13. Seen the movie. Read the book. And your preference was for?

Vertigo. Hitchock’s movie. Boileau and Narcejac give us a grand tale about an obsessed character in The Living and the Dead. Somehow the transplanting of a French tale to an American setting works wonders for the nature of the obsession.

14. Occupational hazard of being a writer. Has a book ever fallen on your head? This may occasionally happen to non-writers, it must be said.

My head has occasionally fallen on books.

15. Did you ever read a series of books out of sequence?

Some books have little memory. They can be tackled in any order. Doctor Who novels, for example. The first one I read was the first one. Thereafter, my reading of those books was jumbled – though did not suffer for that. Well, the Doctor jumps about in time and space. Don’t expect anything approaching chronological order, in the depiction of a time-traveller’s adventures.

16. You encounter a story just as you are writing the same type of tale. Do you abandon your work, or keep going with the other one to ensure there won’t be endless similarities?

It’s important to state that there’s no copyright in ideas – only in the presentation of those ideas. Otherwise there’d only be one Western. One vampire-werewolf-human love-triangle saga. Hmmm…

17. Have you ever stumbled across a Much-Loved Children’s Classic™ that you’ve never heard of?

Who decides? Can we say no wrong of certain stories? I’ll name no names here.

18. You build a secret passage into your story. Where?

Inside the glove-compartment.

19. Facing the prospect of writing erotica, you decide on a racy pen-name. And that would be…

Studd Manley.

20. On a train a fan praises your work, mistaking you for another author. What happens next?

I point out that I’m busy driving the train.

Origins: Charioteers

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion

I watched a lot of Neon Genesis Evangelion when I was in college and the couple of years after that.  It’s an interesting anime that has a lot of action, humor, a penguin living in a fridge, psychologically traumatized characters, and an acid trip of an ending.  Supposedly, a person once asked the creator about the ending and his response was a ‘Fuck You’.  I will admit that some stuff annoyed me like the main character’s catchphrase ‘I will not run away’.  He did a few times and . . . well, I don’t think we were supposed to have much respect for him.

Anyway, watching that birthed the idea of the Charioteers because I wanted to have a book or series where the main characters were teenagers who could pilot big creatures.  I didn’t go for robots though.  The Chariots were unearthed monsters that had no souls of their own, but the ‘pilot’ could sit in a high-tech throne and transfer their consciousness into the beast.  They were needed to fight these rampaging monsters (Angels in Evangelion) that emerged when the world became too toxic.  Humans believe that destroying the monsters will revive the planet.  The truth was that the monsters were trying to remove humans and heal the Earth, so destroying them actually dooms everyone.  I threw in an ending where the surviving characters become various aspects of the world and the modern day Earth was born, which happens with no foreshadowing or sense.  Still, the Chariots were a nice idea.

Humans are living in bio-domes since most of the planet has gone toxic to them.  The characters were a shy twin, his popular brother, an odd girl found out in the pollution, a bookworm girl, and another girl that has no will of her own.  These characters were interesting and fun to play with.  Sadly, the transfer to Windemere has taken a toll on this one.

This is the one idea that I can’t figure out at all.  It feels like a perfect fit to a world of magic and I designated it to a distant island where this is happening.  Not the global scale of the original, but it holds up.  The issue is that the idea wasn’t really solid in Earth and even now it’s missing something.  I have it set up as a ‘Monster of the Chapter’ thing since they have to fight about 9-13 of these things.  I do need a few of these monsters in order to use the Chariots more than once, so maybe I simply need to drop them down a bit or find other reasons to use them.  Also, the structure is an issue.  Is there anything more than fighting the monsters?  Not really and I’m struggling to find reasons for them.  Honestly, I only like the shy boy and the strange girl out of the heroes.  I could try to rework the series with only them and maybe the popular twin.  It’s just a headache and I don’t know why this idea won’t fall in line.

So, does this idea sound like it sucks or has promise?

It’s Time for Another ‘Volunteer Post’

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

I know people are probably getting tired of this since I might have already gathered as many forces as I can.  Doesn’t hurt to keep asking though.  Need this debut to be big since it’ll be a December release and I’m going for a $2.99 price tag.  I’m toiling away on the hype week blog posts with daily poems, interviews, and an ‘about Windemere’ post for each day.  A lot of stuff happens in Allure of the Gypsies:

  • The Callindor Family
  • Luke’s past
  • First Weapon Dragon appears
  • Isaiah’s past
  • Lich’s past
  • Gypsies
  • Queen Ionia of Windmill
  • A hero gets new abilities
  • Somebody dies
  • New villains are introduced
  • The MAIN plot of the series is finally touched on

It’s where the ball really gets rolling in terms of character destiny and development.  So, here I am again asking for volunteers.

Cover Reveal

This is on November 25th, so I will send the info out as soon as you volunteer.  This is going to kick off the hype week and it is different from the blog tour in that it focuses on making people aware of an upcoming debut.

Blog Tour

Got a lot of volunteers, but I’m greedy and always want more.  I’ll send you the cover, author pic, and a Word file of the information along with a schedule.  You only have to post on your day.  The day you post, I make a ‘Check out these Volunteers’ post on my blog directly people to your blog and any published works you want me to mention.  The information for this will be sent out either November 30th or December 1st in order to include the Amazon site.  The point of this event is to direct people to the released book and the rest of the series.

Twubs Chat

This is going to be a fun event the day before release.  From 8pm to 10pm EST, I will be on Twitter in a Twubs Chat area under the hashtag #windemerespeaks.  Here is where you get to ask characters of Windemere anything you can think of.  I will give instructions on how to get there earlier in the day.  This post will include a list of characters with a brief one or two sentence explanation.  I’ve also been given permission to post this on Readfulthings.  Key point of this event is to have fun.

Those are the big events that I’m gearing up for.  It’s going to be a busy couple of weeks for me, so thank you to everyone who is willing to lend a hand.

The Shape Changing Author

First, I put the above clip in because I feel bad that I forgot to mention Mystique on Wednesday.  Totally slipped my mind, which is shameful.  How can anyone forget a naked blue woman who’s also a redhead?  If that’s her real hair color.

In Beginning of a Hero, Gabriel the God of Destiny states that he is responsible for the good and the bad.  He plays a never-ending chess game with himself where he cannot play favorites.  I think this describes writing perfectly.  Think about it, my fellow authors.  You create your heroes, your villains, your supporting cast, and your monsters.  They are in your head and you have to shift them from mind to paper.  There has to be a connection to your characters instead of them being nothing more than words on a page.  If that’s how you see your own characters then a reader will see them the same way.

One important thing here is to not play favorites, even if it’s a main hero and a bunch of supporting characters.  The reason for this can be explained by imagining you’re watching a play.  Is it more fun to see one with a cast of vibrant characters or one guy talking to some cardboard cutouts?  The supporting cast is supposed to be supporting, so they require effort and some depth.  Same with the villains.  You need to give personality to them and make them an interesting threat.  This is why you need to shift characters while writing and give all of them some attention.

I write a series where there’s an ensemble cast, so I have to jump around and shift my mind a lot.  This doesn’t make me an expert, but I’ve found some tricks to avoid merging characters together.  Mostly importantly, take a break when you have to jump focus.  Not a major break, but a minute or two.  Grab a drink, hit the bathroom, stretch your legs, or any small thing to prepare your mind to jump into a new mentality.  This method is not perfect because stronger personalities stick around.  Combine this with pushing for character depth during an editing run.  Read through focusing solely on characters and making them different.  Add quirks, speaking patterns, dreams, goals, jokes, and anything that might not be main plot related, but flushes them out.  The more you do this, the easier it is to shift from one character to another.

I’ve said this on a lot of stuff and I’ll say it again.  PRACTICE!  Very few people can naturally shift tracks and characters without stumbling.  Write test scenes or short stories with your characters to get a feel for them and bond.  Similar to raising children, you have to get a feel for the temperament and personality of the character.  Yes, you’re in control and these aren’t organic creatures.  Not exactly.  You see, the author is an organic creature and there’s that pesky subconscious working around.  Things will slip out and new ideas for a character will click from that area of your mind that was working on your idea while you were focusing on something else.  Ever hear of letting an idea marinate in your subconscious?  Well, characters are ideas.  Kind of off-topic here.

So, don’t be afraid when dealing with multiple characters in a book or scene.  Learn to flow and shift from one to the other.  This way there’s a sense of depth to every character and not only your leads.  You might even find a supporting character who is more interesting than you ever dreamed.

Tears of Heaven Cover Reveal!

Tears of Heaven Cover Art

Tears of Heaven Cover Art

Tears of Heaven, a new Urban Fantasy novel by R.A. McCandless!!!

In the past, the children of angels and humans, the Nephilim, were allowed to lead their lives as they willed. But they proved too strong, too ambitious, and too cunning for their own good. They became warlords, conquerors and emperors. They caused war and strife until the Throne stepped in and forced them to submit to Its will, or die.

Unlike most of her fellows, Del, one of the first Nephilim, had no interest in conquest and domination. In the ancient past, prior to the Throne’s interdiction, she met and fell in love with Dami, a Mediterranean ship captain and trader. Together, they face down pirates and storms and try to create a future together.

In the present, Del unwillingly works for the Throne, obeying the commands of the angel Ahadiel. She helps to keep the world safe from the horrors of escaped demons. At the same time, she keeps herself in the Throne’s good graces. Whenever a rogue demon breaks free from Hell, she and her partner, Marrin, another Nephilim, work together to banish it.

Thrilling danger, fast-paced adventure, high-seas action, and heart-warming romance fill this novel, with a page-turning story that won’t let you put it down.

Coming in December 2013! Put it on your Goodreads Bookshelf!
