Life is Scary

October is a scary month. There is Halloween of course. But it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence is a frightening thing. It seems to permeate our society. We think it is only happening to other people. Other as in “poor, other races or cultures, or lower ‘class’ people. Certainly not our middle class friends or family.

WRONG!

Domestic violence does not discriminate.

I was a young bride from a well known solid middle class white church going family. Then the unthinkable happened. My husband shoved me. I hit my head and it bled as head wounds bleed. What had I done? I thought it had to have been my fault. I would be a better wife. He apologized and said he would never do that again. He told me how much…

Return of Monster Maker Fun!

Back in April, I did something that I called the ‘Monster Maker Fun’.  I asked people to give a list of nonsense words and I turned them into monsters, items, and fictional rituals for a week. Here’s an example that was given to me by John W. Howell last time:

Meagain

“A majestic horse that roams the prairie of Southliver.  Most of them are white and brown, but there have been sightings of black, red, and purple colors.  Unlike other horses, the Meagain gives off an odd glow that is stronger depending on the purity of the spirit.  They are also much more intelligent.  People have been able to communicate clearly with these animals even without a common language.  Meagains are also good problem solvers and those in captivity have been known to pick locks with their narrow tongues.  Avoid getting kicked because they have barbs on their hooves that can deliver a powerful hallucinogen.”

Well, it’s October and I said I would try it again around this time if it was successful.  The week leading up to Halloween will be filled with posts that have the creations along with a fun music video that is spooky.  I promise not to do Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, and all of the usual suspects . . . except Thriller.  One should ALWAYS listen to Thriller on Halloween.

Anyway,  I hope everyone will participate in the fun and maybe pen your own challenge on your blog.  See what you can do with nonsense words on any topic.  Doesn’t have to be monsters, so just have fun.

Guidelines–

  1. Please only supply 1-4 words.
  2. By nonsense words I mean make them up.  This was some early confusion last time.  Just toss letters together to create coherent, but fictional words.
  3. I’ll be linking to your blog to give you credit for the word.
  4. Have fun

First winner for the #burgersandbooks #giveaway ! Prize: Beginning of a Hero, by Charles Yallowitz

Gwen Bristol's avatarGwen Bristol

Week one of the October #burgersandbooks #giveaway is down. The winner of Charles Yallowitz’s Beginning of a Hero is Kathy R. Congratulations, Kathy! I will send you your electronic copy tonight. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Beginning of a Hero, by Charles Yallowitz--book one in the Legends of Windemere seriesBeginning of a Hero, by Charles Yallowitz–book one in the Legends of Windemere series

The first time I read Beginning of a Hero I was struck with the action. The fast-paced writing drew me in, and my mind created great and immediate images around Charles’ Yallowizt’s story.

It was one of those reading escapes in which I felt like I really was inside the book—climbing the stone walls, trudging through the swamp, and going through the training exercises.

If I had to pick a favorite reason why I enjoy this book now, I would have to say it’s the characters.

First Day of Kindergarten

First Day of Kindergarten

The first day of Kindergarten was an adventure for both of us.  Probably me more than him because I was told that I had to attend a parent meeting where I handed him off to the teacher.  So I had to confirm that the bus wasn’t showing up (it did anyway because of course it did) and I had to make sure I had my act together to get him to school in time.  It was a challenge explaining why daddy was going too.  Though it was nice being there for his first day.  People wanted pictures, but this was the only one that I was able to get since I had a trash bag of supplies that he couldn’t carry.

The trip there involved going through a school zone by the high school, which is now watched by a very serious camera.  Of course the jerk behind me tailed me through the zone, raced into oncoming traffic to get around me, nearly took out the front of my car and the car next to me, and almost took out the car in front of me.  Did I mention the county jail is a few yards away from the school on the other side of the street?  Guy even blew through the red light in front of the jail with cops standing there.  They looked as stunned as the rest of us considering what we just saw.  This leads to the part of the story where the rest of the drive was me explaining the rules of the road to my son and getting him to realize that we were not in an accident.

Anyway, got to the school and was walking to the front when he teacher and the school psychologist saw us coming.  They were a little confused because my son wasn’t on the bus and children of Special Ed students got the tour instead of the optional meeting.  Yup.  I had to drop off an Epipen anyway, so it wasn’t that bad.  One of my son’s new classmates was there and they were talking about the shark on his lunchbox, his TMNT shirt, and that he had the Bad Guy (Darth Vader) on his backpack.  It was cute and his classmate took his hand to lead him into the school and to the classroom.

You might notice something was skipped.  My son didn’t remember me until he was halfway done the hallway and I said good-bye.  Here’s the response:

“Bye, Daddy!  I will see you later!”

That was it.  I was a little confused there because I expected a hug or something more than a ‘oops forgot to say good-bye’.  Keep in mind that he was hot and cold about his new school all week, so this wasn’t even in the top 5 possibilities.  Anyway, that was how Kindergarten started for him and myself.  At least he looks forward to homework when he gets home.

Voicing His Opinion From the Womb

Monster Baby! This is one of my favorite stories about my son because it happened before he was even born and gives me a strange defense about not seeing the Transformers movies.  Yeah.  It’s that odd a story here.

Now, Transformers 2 came out in late June of 2009 and my son came out in late July of 2009.  So we went to see the movie with a friend around the time ‘early labor’ could be a possibility.  With daddy being a preemie, we thought it was also a chance.  Still we wanted to get more of our summer blockbuster fix and we had good luck with other movies.  He behaved for the new Star Trek until he started dancing during ending credit song.  He was quiet for Terminator 4, which made us think noise wasn’t a big factor for him.  You think strange things with an unborn child and wonder if they’re reacting to the outside world.  It never made us more curious than when we went to see Transformers 2.

I wasn’t too into the movie to begin with.  Then my wife went to get some air and ended up being gone for a lot longer than usual.  I found her sitting outside the theater holding her stomach and I got her some water.  The little guy was still thrashing and seemed to get worse whenever we stepped back into the theater.  A group of older women saw us and suggested going to the hospital to be safe.  I ran back in to tell my friend that he had to walk home and, as a single father of two, he fully understood.  So, I watched Optimus Prime get unceremoniously dumped on the tarmac as I ran back to get my wife to the hospital.  Hours later we were leaving the hospital being told that it was nothing more than false labor.  This is the ONLY time that happened.

Many people would say that Transformers 2 had nothing to do with and I would agree if this wasn’t such a funny story.  Also he got upset (in and out of the womb) whenever a commercial for the movie or the associated Linkin Park song turned on.  Something is really screwy when Linkin Park upsets a kid and you find that he gets calmed down by ‘Just Lose It’ by Eminem.  That was a strange car ride for me.

tbfofunding

Don’t worry, I have not forgotten about my blog project. I will release the introduction next week, as I do not want to crowd my blog with too many posts.

Now, you might be asking why; why did I push back the exciting blog project I have been talking so much about? Well, it’s because of The Battle For Oz.

If you did not read my last post, this will seem new to you, but if you did, I hope this post will nudge you to check out the project. I honestly do not like to repeat the topic of my posts, but I have to be certain I did my best to raise funds for my book.

So, what’s going on with The Battle For Oz?

I have put the novel up on a crowd-funding publishing website.

What is crowd-funding?

Crowd-funding is when you and everyone else decides to…

Sneaky Munchkin

Towel TimeTypically, the little guy is about as sneaky as an elephant in a living room.  Trust me when I say that makes sense in my head.  So he’ll come running down a hallway yelling about how he’s going to hug you.  He tends to announce his actions or walk into a room screaming a greeting.  So when he does sneak off somewhere, it’s pretty nerve-rattling for me.  I always expect him to pop right up behind me since he’s been my little shadow for years.  Here are the four best heart attack moments with him ‘vanishing’:

The Bounce House Place

My wife and I took the little guy to a Bouncy Castle Place over the summer.  He ran around with the horde of kids as they enjoyed the 5-6 bouncy areas and a tube structure.  At one point, he was the lone kid on a bouncy Pirate Ship.  I looked around and saw that there was only one way in and out.  As a few more kids went in, my wife told me she had to stop out for a second.  She was explaining something and I thought I was keeping an eye on my son since I was standing next to the ONLY entrance/exit to this thing.  The wife went off and I took a peek inside the Pirate Ship to find that someone wasn’t in there.  Took a minute (felt like 5 minutes) to make sure he wasn’t hiding.  I went walking up and down the play area in search of him, including asking a few of the workers if they saw a blonde-haired moppet running around.  I found him asking other adults where his mommy and daddy went.  He scrambled out for the half a second my back was turned, but I thought my wife (who was facing him) would notice.  Nope.  Tend to forget she isn’t the most alert person due to her ADD.  Anyway, I found him and we had a discuss about making sure we know where he is.  Then he gave me the same lecture because I admitted that I wandered off too.

I Know He’s In This House!

It’s rare that I don’t know where my son is in the house.  I can usually hear him or swiftly check his usual haunts.  Well, he found a new one when he was 3.  Now I wasn’t there when he disappeared because I went to take a shower.  Again the wife was distracted and my wife didn’t have her ears in, which my son takes full advantage of when he picks up on the fact.  I came down asking where he was and nobody knew.  The search was on and we had no idea.  Then I went into my parents’ room and noticed a bit of blankie sticking out from behind the bed.  He crawled into the space beneath the headboard and curled up for a nap.  Not the easiest place to get him out of because nobody could fit in there and every piece of ‘bait’ was snatched and pulled back into his new lair.

Our One Attempt at a Movie Night

One day in 2012, my wife and I did something we hadn’t done for a while.  We went to an evening movie while my parents watched the little guy.  This was back when we still used a baby monitor and he was used to sleeping in a bed instead of a crib.  Well, we came back from the movie and my wife went to ask my parents how things went.  They said things were great and he was asleep.  I had gone upstairs, but about halfway up I saw a shadow dart across the hallway and into my son’s room.  He was ‘asleep’ in his bed with the blanket over him.  In our room, I found a stack of DVD’s in the middle of the floor and a pile of papers in the dirty laundry.  Also someone had left a pair of shoes by the door.  I think the best part is that I asked him if he was a sleep and he confidently said yes.  We haven’t tried a night movie since then because we know he’d do the same stunt, but with more mischief.  Matinees are cheaper anyway.

The BIGGEST Heart Attack

When my son was 3, he demonstrated a strange temperature allergy.  If he went from a hot area to a cold area or vice versa then he broke out into hives.  You can already tell where this is going and it was during a very chilly November.  In fact, I believe it was on Thanksgiving.  Everyone was running around and I had rushed to the basement to do a little laundry.  It was one of those moments where everyone thought someone else had the kid.  I walked upstairs and didn’t hear him.  I wandered around asking if anyone had seen him and then I heard him singing.  I was searching for around 10 minutes and add the 5 that I spent in the basement.  Where was he?  We have a Sun Room, which is connected to the kitchen by a door that had remained closed.  He wandered out there, closed the door behind him, and sat at the table in 30-40 degree weather.  He had stripped down to his t-shirt and diaper too.  Normally it’s the mother that screams the kid’s name and runs for him, but it was me.  He was freezing when I grabbed him and complaining that I was ruining his fun as I rushed him back into the house.  Though he thought the ‘tickling’ was entertaining even though it was me warming him up.
