Death by Pumpkin: Rhe Brewster Mystery by N.A. Granger #mystery #thriller
Available on Amazon!
At the annual Pumpkin Festival in the coastal town of Pequod, Maine, Rhe Brewster, an ER nurse and Police Department consultant, responds to screams at the site of the Pumpkin Drop. Racing to the scene, where a one-ton pumpkin was dropped from a crane to crush an old car, Rhe and her brother-in-law, Sam, Pequod’s Chief of Police, discover the car contains the smashed remains of a man’s body. After the police confirm the death as a homicide, Rhe embarks on a statewide search to identify the victim and find the killer. During the course of the emotional investigation, she survives an attempt on her life at 10,000 feet, endures the trauma of witnessing the murder of an old flame, and escapes an arson attack on her family’s home. There is clearly a sociopath on the loose who is gunning for Rhe and leaving bodies behind. With Sam unable to offer his usual support due to an election recall and a needy new girlfriend, Rhe realizes that the only way to stop the insanity is to risk it all and play the killer’s game.

Maine’s most tenacious sleuth is back, this time to confront a menace that threatens to destroy her life and those closest to her. The latest installment of the Rhe Brewster Mystery Series, Death by Pumpkin, is a murder mystery and thriller that tests the limits of Rhe’s strength and resolve like never before.
Excerpt:
When I returned to the house to wait, I left the French doors to the pool area unlocked, as I had for the two nights previous, and sat with my own coffee at the kitchen table. Only the light on the stove lit the room. This night, I didn’t have to wait long. One of the doors opened silently and a small figure slipped in.
“Nice of you to leave the door open. I believe you were expecting me?” asked Bitsy, walking towards the kitchen.
I might have been expecting her, but hearing her voice was still a shock. “Yes. I just want to get whatever this is – a vendetta? revenge? – over with. Took you long enough. Have some coffee?” I pulled a chair away from the table and offered her a mug with coffee I’d already poured. This cup contained three of the sleeping pills I’d been given after Bob’s death, dissolved in its depths.
Bitsy hesitated for a minute. I knew the aroma of the fresh coffee would entice her because based on what I could see of her, she’d been living rough. Her black coat was filthy and stained with large spots of something dark, and stringy, unwashed hair stuck out of her watch cap. Her face wasn’t any cleaner, with smudges of dirt here and there, and a rank smell assaulted my nose.
“No thanks. No time and it’s probably spiked with something. Tricky Rhe. Come on, get up.”
Author Bio
N.A. GRANGER is a Professor Emerita at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. After forty years of research and teaching undergraduates and medical students, she decided to turn her knowledge of human anatomy to the craft of mystery writing. In addition to the Rhe Brewster mystery series, she has written for Death South and Sea Level magazines and the Bella Online Literary Review. She lives with her husband, a cat who blogs, and a hyperactive dog in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and spends a portion of every summer in Maine.

How Can a Week Feel Long and Short?
This week was a head spinner for some reason. The heat and humidity definitely did an energy drain. So, I didn’t get as much done as I wanted in terms of writing. It’s a weird sensation to think that there weren’t enough hours in the week, but feeling like time just crawled due to stress. Things went off the rails at one point and, if you can believe it, I’m probably more stressed than I was before. Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, I can’t mention it online. All I can say is that it was bad and the fallout is still going on.
Plus side, the little guy turned 7 on Thursday. We didn’t do too much because it was a school day, but his party is today. I think everything is ready and will probably triple check throughout the day. A morning appointment will help me get out there for gas and a few smaller errands. So tired that the extra push is welcomed. The little guy is excited and already playing with the new toys that came in from family. Pretty sure getting him to bed will a challenge depending on the new stuff he gets. That’s the core of the weekend here, so we’ll see what else happens.
Really nothing else to talk about here. My goals are staying the same due to the summer and I’ve been a homebody worker most of the time. With the weather sucking and the kid in a shorter school day, I can’t do much. It really boils down to a choice between writing and errands, which is why I do only 1-2 chapter sections a day. If I’m lucky, I can finish Chasing Bedlam this week and maybe find some beta readers. That will be tricky since it’s a sequel and I’m learning this is a personal taste story. I might put up a teaser for this book on Tuesday since the character bios are done. That does bring up a question:
Should I bring back Questions 3?
The reason I ask is because it wasn’t doing too well near the end. I had trouble coming up with questions and many people simply responded to the topic instead of the actual questions. I was wondering if putting thought into 3 questions was worth it if so many weren’t touching on them. Maybe I’ll just chop it down to one main question and follow up with two minor ones like why, who, what, etc. Guess I could leave Thursday blank too, but I’d like to having something. Anyway, I have . . . no time to really think about this.
Goals of the week?
- Write and possibly finish Chasing Bedlam.
- Cooking, biking, and hating the weather.
- Go over post topics for September.
- Prepare to see Suicide Squad next weekend.
- Pray something goes in my favor and the current disaster doesn’t get worse.
For anyone who missed it, here is the teaser for the Charms of the Feykin cover:

Legends of Windemere: Charms of the Feykin Update
It’s going to be a busy weekend, so I might not get the goal post up tomorrow. So, I’m going to share the rough sketch for the Charms of the Feykin cover.

Art by Jason Pedersen
As you can see it’s a really rough sketch, but I love the look of the spear and the way the champions are being hunted. Now, there was something else I was going to mention in regards to the cover. What was it?
Ah, yes. Jason is back. When he sent me the cover for Tribe of the Snow Tiger, Jason pointed out that there were only 5 books to go. He wants to see this through to the end and I’m thrilled that he’s still on board. His art has been a staple of the Legends of Windemere series since Beginning of a Hero and I’m really glad he is willing to work on the last ones. Judging by the sketch, we’re looking at another amazing cover that will have readers anxious to read the story.

Quirks Are Life
Biting of the lip
Flicking of a lighter
Foot tapping and leg twitching
Hot sauce on shredded wheat
Let the quirks fly
A character without a quirk
Forged of cardboard
A statue in the scene
Lost among the humans
With a tic to call their own
Every reader has one
Unique and partially known
Yet noticed
When seen upon the page
Declaring that they do that too
Addicted to a word
Clumsy feet and social awkwardness
An endless world of quirks
That all of us are members
Which ones do you possess?

This weekend (Friday July 29th and Saturday 30th) My first published novel, Dawning, will be free to download on Kindle.

Heroes of Windemere: Kira Grasdon
Hair– Black
Eyes– Green
Race– Human
Hometown– Bor’daruk
Career– Warrior/Merchant
Weapon(s) of Choice– Kusari-Gama
Debut Book– Legends of Windemere: Beginning of a Hero
Not a champion or a character that appears in every volume, Kira Grasdon still plays a major player for the heroes. Throughout the series, she takes the role of Luke Callindor’s fiancee, Nyx’s childhood rival, Sari’s adult rival, source of transport, and occasional ally in battle.
The oldest child of the Grasdon Merchant Family, she is not able to go on the adventures, but finds herself pulled into the events as the prophecy gets closer to its finale. Starting as another student at Hamilton Military Academy, Kira is not warrior material. She is clumsy, whines, and complains to the point where people wonder why Selenia doesn’t expel her. At least she appears that way since she is a ‘master of masks’. After a rebellious early childhood, Kira learned to read people and become what they wanted. Her most common facade has been that of a spoiled, bratty noble, which worked for the high class world she survived in.
Things change due to her romance with Luke Callindor and Kira changes the most out of every character. No longer wanting to be what others want her to be, she crafts a new persona that feels natural and meshes with her fiancee. Every appearance shows an evolved version and reveals that she has been maturing, which includes accepting the consequences of some of her bigger mistakes.

GUEST POST: IGOR LJUBUNCIC
Today, I am very excited to have Igor Ljubuncic, author of the grimdark fantasy series Woes & Hose and The Lost Words, back to Bookwraiths. Instead of answering all my questions as he did last time, I’ve given Igor the floor to share his thoughts on what drove him to write The Amazing Adventures of Dashing Prince Dietrich. So enjoy!

The Amazing Why
by
Igor Ljubuncic
A question often comes up – well, not that often, but let’s pretend I have friends and fans, mutually inclusive – why did you decide to write The Amazing Adventures of Dashing Prince Dietrich? And then the follow-up question that allows me to elaborate more and actually write an article-worthy response: Why is it so different from your previous series, The Lost Words?
After spending roughly seven years writing the four books (from 2007-2013) that comprise The Lost Words universe…
