 Excerpt:

Bathed in moonlight stood the most beautiful scene Fae had ever laid eyes on. A fountain sat on top of a hill. Stone steps at her feet led up to the structure. Water flowed over the side of it, as if someone had been filling it and left the water running too long. The water continued its flow down the steps and seeped into the mossy ground at her feet.
Sloshing through the water, Fae made her way up the steps. Even though the air around her felt cold, the water warmed her feet. When she got to the top, she gasped at the breadth of the fountain. It was the size of a swimming pool, brimming with water that spilled over the side.
The singing stopped, and then a voice spoke, filling her with inexplicable joy. Fontaine. You’ve returned to me.
She’d heard this voice before, but couldn’t quite place where.
Come join me in the water.
“I’ll drown,” she said.
There was a warm chuckle. You won’t drown, my child. You are born of my waters.
“Who are you?” Fae asked, uncertain whether she should be terrified or not.
I am the Lady of the Fountain.
“Is that kind of like the Lady of the Lake? The one in King Arthur’s legend?”
You speak of Freya, my sister. My name is Ester.
Fae looked around at the forest of the Between and wondered if this was the place she was born, and not the bayou in Florida. Could her mother be buried around here?
This is not my original home, Ester said, as if she could read Fae’s thoughts. I have been moved twice in my lifetime. My first home is in a place you call Ethiopia. I lived happily there for many centuries. But then I was stolen from my home and brought to the Americas. For many years, I was kept safe by my guardians, but then one betrayed me and wished to exploit my powers. I did not allow him to use me to further his evil designs. But then I was left alone—until a man named Conall found me and brought me here.
“Why didn’t he return you to your home in Africa?”
He told me my home has been corrupted. I would not be safe there.
“I’m really sorry.”
Don’t worry over me, child. This place is wholly adequate.
“That’s good to hear.” Fae paused, the question she’d been dying to ask on the tip of her tongue. Finally, she asked, “Do you remember my mother and father? Do you know where I can find them?”
I’m sorry. Where they are, you cannot go. I am truly sorry.
“So they truly are dead?”
“Yes.”
Fae’s heart sank. She hoped that Brigitte had been lying and her parents were alive somewhere. Fae could feel the remorse emanating from the fountain and felt the need to comfort Ester.
“But, you saved me.”
Yes, I did.”
“Thank you,” Fae said.
You are welcome, my child.
Fae reached out her hand and touched the water. Her spirits immediately lightened. The water took on a green glow as a breathtaking face appeared just below the surface, haloed in long, black hair. The Lady smiled at her but remained beneath the water.
“So, you can grant youthfulness?” Fae asked.
Or take it, from anyone that touches my waters.
 “What happens when they drink?”
They are not meant to drink. That is a theft. Youth stolen without permission. For most, the punishment is immediate—madness.
An errant leaf drifted and landed on the surface of the water. Fae expected it would float, but it didn’t. It dropped like a stone. This water wasn’t like any other she’d seen. Fae wondered what those waters had done to her.
The waters did nothing to you. I gave you my power. I saw what was planned from the beginning. I could not stop him from destroying my guardians, but I could keep him from succeeding in his quest for eternal life. So, I gave you my power—leaving me weak and powerless. That act accomplished two things—it kept the power from falling into evil hands, and it saved your life.
“Are you still powerless?”
No, my dear.  I am now fully restored.
“That’s good to know, but I’m sorry to tell you that he found me. He came after me. He got his youth back.”
That is unfortunate. I only meant to protect. Instead, I cursed you.
“I wouldn’t call eternal youth a curse.”
It can be. There is no fear as universal as the fear of death. Men will kill to stop it. They will do the most heinous and terrible things to avoid it. And giving you the power to grant eternal life will make you forever a target. Now, will you please join me in my waters?

The History behind the Mystery:

St. Augustine, Florida is rich in history, murder, intrigue, and ghost stories—making it the perfect setting for this book. You might be interested to know that some of the most outrageous tales in this novel are actually based on true history—including the tale of Captain Abela and Dolores. The tragic end to their love story occurred over two hundred years ago in a secret room located in St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos—a castle-like fort built by the Spanish over three hundred years ago. Tourists are able to sign up for the St. Augustine Ghost Tour to learn more about the ill-fated lovers. The image at the right is the actual room in which they died. You’ll learn more about their story by reading Cursed by the Fountain of Youth.

Another interesting note: The legend of the Fountain of Youth has long been tied with St. Augustine and there is talk of a society that exists to protect the Fountain of Youth from discovery. No one knows if the society truly exists. If it does, it is cloaked in secrecy.

Almost Time to Get My Butt Back to the Grindstone

I didn’t have any goals for last week.  That set the bar pretty low, which is a good thing because I wasn’t doing too hot.  We had a lot of cold and rain early in the week, but then things got warmer.  So my sinuses decided that I needed to know a new definition of pain and my energy was always one step away from drained.  Gave me a good excuse to keep watching ‘Supernatural’ and take my time with things.

Hopefully, the Chasing Bedlam cover is ready to reveal this coming Thursday.  I’ll be doing the release after the Super Bowl because I don’t want to try and promote while watching that.  Attempted it last year and it didn’t work in my favor.  Still plenty of time to volunteer for the blog tour.  One thing that I need to figure out is what to do about the first book here.  We’re hoping to make a new cover for that one, but it won’t be ready in time for the new release.  So I’ll be using the old one.  Part of me considered holding off until both are ready, but my son has a week off in February and March through April is going to be chaos.

That’s a reason why I’m hoping to tackle The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks on Monday.  Part of this depends on if I can finish what I picked up this week.  I went back to ‘Sin’ and his stories to find that I stopped in mid-creation.  The heroes were done, but not the villains, locations, and event list.  I tackled that only to get slowed down by life, so I still have Act 4 to design.  I might be able to do it over the weekend since the final acts of a Sin story aren’t as complicated as the others.  Just tying up the story with final battles and adventures.  If I can’t do this then I’ll use Monday and I’ll start in on the Ichabod Brooks short stories on Tuesday.  My hope is to finish it by the end of February and see if anybody wants to beta read them.

Things may get a little busy around here though.  My son had his gymnastics show today and his last art class for two or three weeks.  We have our Super Bowl party next weekend, which means a lot of cleaning or yelling about cleaning when the cleaning has already been done.  Then the following weekend is the Chasing Bedlam release and Valentine’s Day where we’re doing our usual movie/lunch thing.  Seeing ‘John Wick Chapter 2’ because nothing is more romantic than kick-ass action scenes.  After that comes the kid’s week off and . . . do I really think I’m going to get any work done this year?

I had this problem last year with my son having a lot of days off and events coming in so quickly that I never had a moment to rest.  And people expect me to toss a full-time job onto this trash heap I call time management?  Ugh.  Once I’m done with the Ichabod Brooks stuff, I’ll probably edit the last two Windemere books and that will leave me open for the rest of the year.  Well, I have the third Bedlam book and Dawn’s story to put together.  Part of me is still hesitant to starting the next series, so I might even do the standalone that I can’t publish until Summer 2018.  It feels odd starting a long project when I don’t know what the future will hold.  This is a different feeling than before because I’m working with pessimism now.

Only other news is that an idea popped into my head that brings me back to my superhero dilemma.  Earth or Windemere?  Now, I’m thinking of toying with the Four Horseman mythos.  Mostly, something is going on in the world and the Horsemen are activated because they’re really supposed to save everyone.  Famine is always eating, but likes sharing food.  Pestilence is a healer.  War is still a mad berserker, but only goes after evil hearts.  Haven’t figured out Death yet.  The thing is that this would fit in nicely with the superheroes, but not Windemere.  I also already had a War Horseman story, which puts another character at risk.  Unless I can find some other group of Doom Harbingers that one can go rogue from.  Early stages here, but this could be a tipping point.  Maybe I’ll toy with the superheroes later this year and see if I can get a handle on that.  At the very least, I could reach a point where people are sick of hearing about them.

Goals of the week:

  1. Finish outlining ‘Sin’ storyline.
  2. Start writing The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.
  3. Clean and prep for Super Bowl party.
  4. Continue the biking.
  5. Try to go to bed early at least once this week.
  6. Remember that the final season of Black Sails starts.
  7. Bug the wife about catching up on Windemere.  She’s still back at Charms of the Feykin.  We think.  She doesn’t remember a lot since she mixes up the original ideas with the current stuff.  That and she’s still annoyed that Nyx got a haircut.
  8. Finish watching Supernatural Season 6.

Meet Guest Author A.C. Flory…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

self-portrait“Hi, my name is Andrea, and I’m a writer,” she said, stumbling over her words.

That’s me, A.C. Flory, science fiction writer and introvert extraordinaire. I’m not stereotypically shy, and if you ask me about one of my passions, I’ll happily chew your ear off, but talking about myself and my writing still feels…odd. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t start writing fiction until I was forty-eight.

I may have been a late bloomer when it came to storytelling, but reading was another matter entirely. I began reading for pleasure when I was eight, and by twelve I’d read Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment…and loved it. Before anyone gets too excited, I have to point out that education was very different back then, especially in the Catholic school system. We were expected to be really good at ‘reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic’ by the time we reached the end of primary…

7 Tips to Making Friends with Lloyd Tenay: All Refunds Given in Hugs

Black Mage and Fighter from 8-Bit Theater (Also Final Fantasy)

Black Mage and Fighter from 8-Bit Theater (Also Final Fantasy)

It’s hard to make friends, especially when your an escaped serial killer who lives in a broken world.  Well, not so much broken, but there’s definitely a stab first and share beers later mentality.  Don’t worry because there are plenty of places to stab that will still give you time to pay for drinks and enjoy one.  I think I’m getting off topic.  Also, I’ve been told that I should give advice that might be helpful and not entirely revolve around stabbing people.  Cassidy says I won’t get my machete back if I break that rule, but she should also know that she has to sleep sometime.  Let’s see how bad ass you are with hot sauce in your bra!  Shall we begin?

  1. Don’t threaten to put hot sauce in your potential friend’s bra or underwear until you’ve known them for a while.  At least a year and even then, I highly recommend hiding all their bullets.  Don’t hide the guns because they’ll notice those are missing.  Focus on the bullets and make sure you have an apology card ready in case they go on a job with the empty guns and . . . moving on!
  2. Personality is everything when making friends.  If you don’t have one then you’re going to be one lonely fucker.  In that case, hostages can count . . . what? . . . I’ve just been told that what I was about to say is wrong and out of line.  So if you don’t have a personality . . . read a self-help book and pray a lot.
  3. Find a common interest, which does involve talking to your potential friend.  This can be rather hit or miss because you never know what will happen.  It could be easy or something obscure like a movie that you thought you were the only fan of.  Dammit, I can’t stay mad at anything with Bob Hoskins.  By the way, rapidly throwing out topics makes you seem desperate.  If this is all you can do then drink a lot first to make it seem like the alcohol is the culprit.
  4. Introductions are important, so make sure they tell you their name.  Guess you could give them yours too.  It really depends on if you have any warrants out. For example, one time I thought I made a new friend and gave them my name.  Turns out the guy was a bounty hunter and I had recently done this thing to a guy who I hadn’t gotten around to killing yet.  Much like the window of the penthouse bar we met in, the friendship didn’t hold together.
  5. Compliments are . . . am I trying to make friends or get laid?  Yes, I know that’s a type of friend, but I think I mixed up my notes.  I also have something here about a pizza delivery job that we should have finished a month ago.  Let’s just move on to the next one while I figure out if this is supposed to be a Vegetarian Delight or Meat Worshiper pie.
  6. Nope.  Definitely the second and now I have to finish this quickly.  Invite your potential friend on an activity that you enjoy.  This is usually after the initial meeting, which requires being social in the first place.  You wouldn’t be needing this advice if you never left the house or settled for computer ‘friends’ like some authors who will remain nameless and keep typing because he has no choice.  Where was I?  Yes, invite a new friend on activity.  I recommend working up to murder spree, so start small with something tame like carnival rides, shoplifting, movies, mooning nuns, reading to children, or streaking through the nearest restaurant.
  7. DO NOT stab somebody that you want to be friends with.  Awww, come on!  You said not to make the whole list revolve around stabbing.  This is only the last one.  Fine, I’ll think of something else
    .
    .
    .
Never take advice from a psychopath.  *subtly points at Cassidy*

One Tweet a Day: Good, Bad, or Meh?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

A while back, I stopped doing a promo tweet every 3 hours to having one go live at 12 AM and pinning it once I woke up.  This gave me one tweet a day and the new one was always at the top of the feed.  I haven’t really reported on this since I can never tell if it helps with sales or not.  Yeah, I’m terrible when it comes to this since I focus more on the writing side of things these days.  So, I’m going to do a quick Pro/Con thing here.

Con

  1. Your promo will come and go in other people’s feeds rather quickly.  Unlike the people who tweet multiple times throughout the day (I’ve seen 3, 6, and even 1 hour intervals), you don’t have the flood effect.  So you can’t depend on people stumbling onto it after maybe an hour at most.
  2. You have to put more effort into retweeting to bring attention to your pinned tweet.  This path means you depend a lot on reciprocation and you will have to carve out periods where you tweet by hashtag, your feed, or whatever you want to do.  No sitting on your hands this time.
  3. You need to remember to pin in the morning.  This is one of the first things I do because I have forgotten before.  I’d nearly buried it and it was a pain to scroll in search of it.  Now this really only goes for people using something like Hootsuite.  Those that don’t can easily avoid the trap, but they do have to remember to make a tweet every day.  Imagine forgetting to promote for the entire day?  Oops.
  4. This gives you fewer tweets to cycle through if you begin running out of ideas.  It might just be me here, but I start reusing tweets after a month or two.  It’s been so hard to find my old stuff since I don’t have as much out there.  This is probably just me and could be considered a rather whiny con.

Pro

  1. You don’t have to rush to Twitter every hour or three to make a tweet.  It’s a one and done deal that leaves you free to focus more on other things.  Yes, you have to go to retweet at times, but you can do that on a break and it takes less brain power than coming up with a witty promo.
  2. When I was doing multiple tweets, I got maybe 30 retweets on a good day.  I think many people will retweet you once and leave it at that until the next day.  With a single pinned tweet, you don’t have the retweets spread out.  So I range from 60-120 depending on the quality and day of the tweet.  How is this good?  Ever do a search for a hashtag and notice it goes to ‘Top’ before ‘Latest’?  A lot of retweets means you can be higher up that first search option.
  3. You take your time making the tweet and don’t fell like you have to stretch your ideas.  This allows you to focus on one good tweet instead of many average ones.  Sure, the pinned up could still be meh, but at least you aren’t spending the day with 10 meh tweets and 1 good one that shows up at 3 AM.
  4. This really helps with a sale because it keeps the sale info at the top of your feed.  Even if you decide to throw out a few throughout the day, you have less pressure on you because there’s still the one you began your day with.  Everything else can be if you feel like it or see that traffic can use a little boost.

That’s what I could come up with.  Honestly, the big thing for me is the freeing up time and not having to come up with 6-7 tweets a day.  Some people can do it, but I’m more into the one and done thing.  Time and energy is limited these days, so I’ll use whatever tricks I can to get function in both arenas.

What are your twitter strategies?

John Fioravanti

I want to welcome a friend of mine, John Fioravanti. John and I met at Rave Reviews Book Club and realized we share a number of interests. Also, we are both over 65, so there is that as well. John is a very talented author and has been quite busy since retiring from his teaching responsibilities. John lives in Waterloo, Ontario and has graciously consented to a visit here with me today.

Hi John and welcome. Help yourself to the coffee.

Thank you very much, John. I’m honoured to visit here at “Fiction Favorites”. Mmmm, great coffee!

Thank you. I got the recipe from a friend of mine. Well now if you are comfy why don’t we get to the questions.

Tell us a little about yourself, John. I know you spent your working life as a history teacher but after that what made you decide to become a writer?

New Orleans of the Shattered States

French Quarter

French Quarter

Previously, I stated that the newest Bedlam story got kicked off by the mention of Mardi Gras and New Orleans.  The idea that the party would start and never stop after the collapse was intriguing.  Not enough for a full story, but I liked having it as one of the bigger obstacles.  It also makes New Orleans a place that can be returned to because it stands out amongst the rest of the country.  Future stories can have Cassidy and Lloyd return here if they’re in trouble.  Still, it is out of the way, which is why I had it be part of the journey instead of the starting or final destination.

My knowledge of New Orleans is very limited even after reading up on it.  It’s certainly a city that one has to visit in order to get, which is a luxury I don’t have.  I talked to a few friends who have been there to get insight and run my ideas by them.  There were a lot of interesting stories, which is what I took from this. New Orleans feels like a city of stories, which are either starting or ending there.  Some continue outside the borders while others remain within.  Either way, that’s one of the big takeaways.

I did decide to avoid going too far into the city.  Google Maps helped with basics, but I felt that I couldn’t give this famous city justice.  Especially since the Shattered States tends to be over the top and even teasing in regards to the real world sources.  I still went that route to some extent.  Everything is paid for with beads within the more central part of the city, which has become a constant party.  The outer regions are a mix of slums and suburbs that survive on what they can grow and make.  They will send people in with beads that they either find or can get for supplies they can’t find outside.  Personally, I like the combination and it can lead to other stories if I ever branch out.  Maybe friction between the inner and outer denizens.

This isn’t including the vampire packs that are running around the area.  Each one has their own territories and there is organization, but they really are nothing more than another set of gangs.  Of course, they aren’t really vampires and I had a lot of fun thinking of which system they’re based off of.  In the end, I see them in a similar vein as the Wyoming cannibal tribes.  Each pack follows a different style of vampire, which can make for some comedy.  I didn’t get to investigate this very much because Cassidy and Lloyd are always passing through.  Another potential story for later.  I was going to include it in one idea, but that story had to get scrapped due to current events.

Overall, New Orleans was a curious challenge.  I didn’t have the knowledge or confidence to go very far with it.  Yet, I couldn’t leave it out.  How can you have your heroes travel along the southern coast from Dallas to Miami and skip one of the biggest cities?  I could have had it wiped out or too dangerous to touch on, but that felt like a cop out.  This was an important step since I’m still toying with the idea of making other stories that take place on Earth.  Keeping everything in NYC and the other places that I know doesn’t work very well.  I mean, having every hero and villain in the same city when there’s an entire world to play with?  Gets rather ridiculous after a while.
