Probably Made More Progress Than I Realize

The above video shows a character that I just stumbled onto when I randomly picked ‘Magi: Labyrinth of Magic’ to watch this week.  The original choice was ‘Fate/Zero’, but I had a really bad anxiety attack on Sunday.  Watching an anime where one of the bad guys enjoys killing children wasn’t a good idea.  That and I found it was a little too graphic for me.  ‘Magi’ was a lot more fun and light-hearted, but I just really enjoyed the character of Morgiana.  Freed slave from a warrior tribe whose kicks are powerful enough to break stone and is really fast.  There was also an odd innocence and bluntness to her that I found entertaining.  Starting to realize that I gravitate a lot towards female characters being my favorites in anime.  Anyway, that’s just explain the video choice and the gif I’m going to put at the bottom.

I had a lot of life stuff to do and the week began on the wrong foot with an anxiety attack that earned itself a post on Thursday.  So, I didn’t touch War of Nytefall: Temptation and I’m starting to wonder if that title is right.  The story revolves around several of the male characters being kidnapped for a tournament to earn the hand of the ‘Dawn Fang Queen’.  It’s going to be a Mab-heavy book.  I wonder if War of Nytefall: Rivals would be a better one.  Good thing I didn’t jump into the writing then.  All I accomplished was scheduling the M-W-F posts for July and August.  I have a list of topics for September too, but I can work on that after I write the next book.  This is a lot of progress on the social media front, but I think the weak sales and loss of another review has me wishing I could do more.  Feels like indie publishing is becoming a ‘rich man/woman’s’ game these days, which is frustrating.

As I said, this week was a big one in terms of non-author stuff.  Monday is rather blurry due to the anxiety attack, but the other days were errands and blogging set up.  I was starting to fall asleep by 2PM nearly every day.  Tuesday was going to my son’s Invention Convention where he displayed his ‘Fixer Gloves’ and hit the button on the DBZ headset that we told him not too.  Thankfully, he had been playing with it so much that it didn’t have enough juice to be loud.  So nobody really noticed Frieza yelling ‘Impossible’ while my son asked for a wrench.  We also had my son’s recorder concert, which was the big excitement for the week.  He had a blast and did really well from what I could see, but he was in the back and hard to spot all the time.  Mostly, I said a little hand waving high in our direction and a mop of dirty blonde hair bouncing around.  We’re getting close to choosing an instrument for 4th grade too unless he only wants to do chorus.

The weekend is going to be busy too.  Today has martial arts and we’re going to a local comic/anime convention.  My son gets to don his Green Lantern costume again while I’m steeling myself for crowds.  I think we have something else to do this afternoon, but it’s probably just laundry for me.  Sunday is a birthday party followed by a possible Lego set if my son eats without a fight.  Then, I promised to show him the first Pokemon movie and that will be the end for me.  I’m handing most of the evening martial arts classes over to my wife until I finish this next book, so this might be the last chaotic weekend for a while.  Then again, we have festivals all over the place, Memorial Day coming, and then this whole 13th anniversary trip to see ‘Deadpool 2’.  That last one is in June, which means I’ve deviated a lot from the weekend topic.

In other news, I managed to get my Kindle to work again, so I’m thinking of switching between manga and the books I have on there.  The poor thing wasn’t taking a charge for a long time, but I got it working, which means I can try to shrink my ‘To Read’ list.  One of my habits has been getting worse though.  Ever since high school, I’ve dozed off while reading.  It’s because I would read until I fell asleep, so I have this subconscious connection between reading novels and nap time.  Since I’ve been more tired than ever lately, it’s been worse.  Nothing says fun like drooling on your Kindle.  Manga requires a lot more page turning, so that keeps me going.  So, it’s going to be long hauls through the books and I’m going to start with the smaller ones.  There are some hefty tomes on my list that I don’t know if I can tackle with my full attention.  Baby steps here since I’m a notoriously slow reader to begin with.

So, what are the goals of the week?

  1. Start writing War of Nytefall: Temptation (or Rivals). Any preferences?
  2. Watch ‘New Legends of Monkey’ with wife.
  3. Dinners and laundry
  4. Homework with the munchkin
  5. Read Kindle and borrowed manga
  6. Test out blurbs for Quest of the Broken-Hearted. I’d do this Tuesday, so the scheduled post will be pushed to June 5th.  It’s a good one too because it was a requested topic, but putting it closer to the anniversary will probably help me in the long run.
  7. Avoid unexpected chaos.  One could dream.

Morgiana and Sinbad

For context, Sinbad wanted Morgiana to stay behind and not go into danger.  She bluntly denied his chivalrous request.

Lorry’s Lair Rental Bonanza Blitz . . . Every Death Volcano Must Go!

Yahoo Image Search

Welcome to the biggest sale of the year.  Well, it’s our only sale of the year because we’re only open for a week.  Since we only do rentals, there’s no point in staying open and wasting money.  This system keeps most of our clients on the same payment schedule, which our Accountant Ogre prefers.  She’s not really an ogre, but she doesn’t like being reminded that she’s a demon.  We do have a call service for the rest of year, so don’t think we abandon you completely.  So, what are you looking for?

Islands are always popular, which means the best ones tend to go in the first day.  This is our fourth day, so the pickings on that category are a little slim.  We have one with a volcano and a few that still have the indigenous people living there.  Part of the contract for these locations is that you don’t remove, enslave, or hurt them in any way.  We do know that accidents happen in the cause of a battle, but nothing on purpose or done with the knowledge that you will hurt them.  Too much responsibility?  Well, we have some empty islands that range from icy to desert.  There’s this one that has no animals other than emus.

Yes, we can discuss the buildings, which are interchangeable in some instances.  We have a helicopter fleet that can transport these places piece-by-piece. Ancient castles are going out of style, so we rent those for cheap.  The problem with them is that you can only modernize it with permission from the original owners.  We have a seance service in those cases, but most find that to be a headache. Literally because these ghosts like to talk telepathically.  I would recommend the military fortress surrounding a rich manor.  It’s a little on the pricey side, but you have great defenses and excellent comfort.  The manor also comes with a man-made hot spring that doubles as a power source. Don’t ask how it works because our scientists refuse to share their secrets.

You must be thinking of defenses now.  Now, the inside of the buildings are all up to you because you need to have your own mark on it.  Those can be removed if you trade it in anyway.  The rest of your lair can be outfitted by us.  Sadly, we are out of drones until next month because one person took most of our stock.  Calls himself the International Peeper and his check cleared.  Depending on the island type, we can offer various biological creations.  Dinosaurs are still popular and we have scaled and feathered versions.  Can’t go wrong with more common wild animals like bears and tigers, which many heroes work to defeat without killing these days.  There’s a cybernetically enhanced rodent package too that isn’t popular, but we contend is effective.  Squirrels with robotic arms to hurl acorns at high speed, spy mice and rabbits, battle capybara, and . . . laser-shooting otters.  Yes, I know those aren’t rodents, but we don’t have a weasel package.  Not since badgers escaped and sunk all of East Virginia.  Of course, you never heard of that place.  We’d feel rather silly allowing humanity and history to remember that it existed after that fiasco.

Now, I’m going to leave you with Susie to finish the paperwork.  Who is Lorry?  That’s actually a family name.  All of us are Lorry . . . Yes, I meant ‘a Lorry’.  Here’s a crueler to get you moving quicker.

Lisa Burton

Welcome all you veterans and dirt cowboys, you Hog aficionados of all kinds. You’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio, the only show that brings you characters from the books you love. Today, my special guest is Shawna Kretchman, Chief of police on the Pine Creek Indian reservation. “Welcome to the show, Shawna.”

“Aww…thanks, Lisa. I’ve heard a lot about you. (From my other half, the one with the big mouth…) Really looking forward to meeting you.”

“Nice to finally meet you. We had your friend, Fish, on the show last year.”

“Oh, really? What did he say about me? Gotta tell ya, parts of me are afraid to ask…and I love the guy.”

“Nice things, I promise. He said something about a motor home in Twin Falls, and you putting him in jail, twice. But it was all really nice.”

“That’s right, Lisa. Locked him and his two buds up…

A Writer’s Guide to Firearms: Shotguns

Great guide (and series) for those who want their action scenes to have more realism.

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

This is a guest post by my author friend, William R. Bartlett. It continues his discussion of all things firearms. Assault rifles have featured prominently in the horrific events in Florida, Las Vegas and elsewhere, so I wish to repeat that this series is only meant to help writers improve their writing and not to glorify weapons in any way. You can check out the rest of the series on firearms here. Today, Bill explains how rifles work and describes some common writing blunders. Enjoy and bookmark!

Part 5: Shotguns

A shotgun is a long gun with a smooth bore, designed to hit either a moving target or a stationary target while using a less precise aim.

Designing the Vampire Cafe: Nearly to the Point of Nausea

Dracula

One thing that seems to come up a lot in vampire stories is what one could consider a Vampire Bar or Cafe.  It’s a watering hole for these monsters where they can mingle and have a meal without hunting.  Some have humans entranced and handed out like cans of beer while others have the blood in mugs.  Most times, these places take on the form of a S&M club or a noble party with a high level of eeriness.  I always found this a little strange because vampires don’t always go to these lengths for entertainment.  I know they’re seen as the embodiment of decadence and primal instinct, but this does go over the top at times.  So, what are some things to consider if you make a vampire club?

  1. Make sure it’s easy to find for vampires, but not by mortals.  Even the use of vampiric runes and symbols is a bad idea because hunters always figure these out.  You can have new turns be taught to memorize these feeding locations, so it’s an oral tradition instead of anything written down.  Considering how old vampires tend to be, this would make a lot of sense.
  2. Connected to #1: NO NEON SIGNS!  They might not scream vampire, but you’re going to get curious mortals in there.  You can’t eat them all without making people wonder why so many disappear around your establishment.
  3. We get it.  Some vampire types love sex and have a thing for pain.  Not every club has to be filled with more latex than a condom factory.  There can always be a separate place for this because who wants to eat while the couple in the next booth are doing something unsightly with the lit candles.
  4. If you must have mortals mingling with vampires, explain how this doesn’t reveal the whole thing.  After all, these places are a great way to gather information about an always changing world.  For example, the Scrumptious Siren has a spell that prevents mortals from realizing they’re with vampires.  Feeding isn’t allowed on the premises and surrounding area too, which means you don’t have that disappearance issue.
  5. Doesn’t hurt to come up with a few creative menu items.  Sure, vampires are only interested in blood, but they can have fun with it.  After all, they can mix blood types instead of having to stick with one person.  Alcohol being added is another option since that’s something that can get into the bloodstream.  It really depends on how you work the vampire type.
  6. Playing pool can be fun, but those cues are just asking to be used as giant stakes.  Keep that in mind if you add this game because I’m betting the vampires have already considered this without you.
  7. An outdoor eating area might not be a good idea.  Sure, it creates a great amount of ambiance, but there are two flaws.  One is that passing people can see the vampires eating.  The other is that it undoes all attempts at hiding the place’s presence.  You might think sunlight is a problem too, but they can easily scamper inside once a timer goes off.
