As I mentioned yesterday, immortals typically don’t pay much attention to the passage of time. In fact, many stories tend to show this off by having the immortal be confused about time periods or flat out say it. They’re designed to be creatures outside of time who have, quite often, ascended to a psychological point where they no longer care about the limited concerns of mortals. It’s kind of sad and makes for a difficult character if you’re going for a connection.
Thankfully, the Dawn Fangs aren’t usually like this, which comes out pretty clearly in War of Nytefall: Anarchy.
To be fair, there’s been a sense of this from the beginning and much of that was because of how this series works. It isn’t a vampire story where you have one or a band of mortals facing off against blood-sucking monsters. You don’t have mortals as the central characters at all here, which has caused some issues. People see vampire and they focus entirely on the fangs, violence, blood, and powers. The personalities don’t always get noticed by readers, which is where you would see their gradually changing thoughts on immortality.
The Dawn Fangs are really hard to kill even compared to other vampires, but they have this sense of things being finite. Sure, they fight with little care for their bodies due to regeneration, but they still avoid taking fatal blows. You don’t see these characters standing before an enemy and acting like they’re never going to die. Even Clyde, who destroys people with ease, dodges and acts like he could be taken out. Honestly, I think more mortals have done the ‘I will not die’ shtick than vampires in this series, which is strange.
You may also note that the Dawn Fangs are starting to make families, dreams, and long-term plans that are similar to what a mortal would make. Best examples here are Chastity Sullivan and Desirae Duvall. Both women have created businesses and are continually trying to expand. They’ve talked about branching out and where they want to go, but it’s spoken of in stages. While they have eternity, they know that time is a factor and they need to pay attention to it. Letting the years shoot by as they build slowly means the world will change faster than their businesses, which could fail due to lack of adaptation.
All of this may seem minor and easily missed in the series, which always focus more on the action adventure side. It really gets overlooked when it comes in discussion, which is what you will see in War of Nytefall: Anarchy. Dawn Fangs are starting to want the war to end because they wish to live in the light. They are tired of hiding in plain sight, which is normally a favorite hobby of immortals. You can tell that their mentality on living forever has changed because they’re developing connections. This would usually be an issue because a person will have to disappear after a certain amount of years to avoid suspicion and then government probing. Clearly, it’s not the case here since the Dawn Fangs are pushing to become known to mortals, so they won’t have to rebuild their lives after a few decades.
I always found it strange how immortals who have been around for hundreds of years are still sane or willing to be near humans. Not to mention how they’ve never been found out, especially when populations were smaller. The toll on the mind has to be immense and immortals show enough emotion to make you believe they could have mental illnesses and trauma too. So, how can they keep disappearing and rebuilding their life throughout history without snapping? Technology changing makes the feat more difficult, so greater actions need to be taken to pull it off. That’s more stress, which should drive an immortal to just go away from civilization.
My hope is that War of Nytefall: Anarchy really pushes the idea that the Dawn Fangs have a sense of time and belonging. This way, it makes more sense for them to want to be known and accepted by their neighbors.

There are times when it felt like the Vampire Civil War wasn’t going on, but War of Nytefall: Anarchy has it as the backdrop. I needed to do this because there were only two books left, so I needed to remind the audience of the situation. Jewelz, Leo Kandrel, Desirae Duvall, and Alastyre acted as distractions since they were third party enemies with no allegiance to Nyte or Nytefall. That’s 4 of the 8 books focusing on something other than the war. 5 if you want to say Lost’s debut didn’t have enough of it. So, Anarchy is really going to stand out here.
That being said, I didn’t start writing battle after battle because I knew that would get boring. You know they’re going on, but you don’t have to see them. This is still an action adventure series instead of a strict war one. Peppering a few here and there made the setting clear. Beyond that, I found reports and discussions about their progress worked better. This also allowed for the noncombatants like Chastity and Gregorio to stay in the story. If you’re only looking at battles then the support characters are going to be left out of the spotlight.
Also doesn’t help that Clyde was staying away from the battlefield and I had to follow him for the most part. Instead, I had people talk to him about the war and the future. I liked how this went because it brought the focus on something people tend to forget in stories of war:
Why are these characters fighting?
I’ve mentioned Clyde’s dream throughout the whole series, but this is when he really began thinking about it. His doubts and fears were showing, which made this incredibly powerful monster come off as human. It’s hard to make a war come off correctly if everyone involved is a vicious monster, so I put a lot of work into making the Dawn Fangs on both sides show their humanity. In my mind, this made the weight of their actions and decisions stronger than if I had them battling it out.
You even see how this extended war is wearing on the Dawn Fangs, which can be strange considering they’re immortal. These beings have eternity to do whatever they want unless they’re killed in battle or by a hunter. Normally, immortals don’t pay attention to the passage of time, so a war going on for over a decade is a blip in their existence. Here, they want to stop fighting and living in fear, so they’re getting increasingly more focused on finishing the war. You get a sense that things are going to get messy if Clyde and Xavier don’t put an end to the fighting soon. Maybe they do in Anarchy? Check it out and find out.
Since I don’t watch or read war stories, I might have inadvertently done what those in the genre typically do. The war is there and important to the story, but there’s more of a character focus. You’re seeing a smaller picture within the bigger one because the grander scope is too difficult to encompass in a single tale. By zooming in on those who are involved and affected by the war, you get a sense of the overall impact. For example, the pressure of leadership has been a constant subplot for Clyde and it gets deeper with every story. Through him, you can see how much of a challenge it is to wage a war in the shadows while figuring out how your people can live freely in the light.
So, what do you think of using war as a backdrop? Do you think it’s better to just show the battles?
Nothing flashy. Just a simple fact:
So, dive into this fantasy vampire action adventure for less $1 and relax this Labor Day. If you’re Jewish like me then enjoy it with some apples and honey while tossing bread into the nearest body of water. Happy Rosh Hashana!
Thanks to Those Who Mentioned My Book So Far:
As you can see above, War of Nytefall: Anarchy is available for 99 cents!
I’m genuinely surprised and happy that I pulled off releasing this book. I had all of the pieces together, but the week was crazy. So, I nearly forgot to hit publish and ended up doing it in the midst of getting ready for work. Thankfully, I had set everything up on Kindle prior to Friday. Of course, I’m not 100% certain I remembered all of the promo ideas. Think I got everything. Oh well, I’m kind of burnt out, so I’ll go over it again once I recover.
Speaking of promos, I totally forgot about Thursdays. Typically, this would be ‘Immortal Wars’, but I wanted to push Anarchy for the whole month. So, I didn’t put any promos on there alongside the ‘Immortal Wars’ stuff. Oops. Think I’m going to do faction poems during the 5 day weekend when I have time. There are 4 groups involved in this story and I have 4 days to cover. This also makes me wonder what I should do with Thursdays once ‘Immortal Wars’ is done in December. I’m leaning towards making it a poetry day, but it’s tough thinking of good poem topics. At least I have time to figure it out.
School started for me on Monday and on Thursday for my son. He did great with no issues like previous years. It’s going to be a lot of work, so we’re hoping to get a good system down for homework and getting rest. He’s taking American Sign Language too and has already absorbed a lot in just 2 days. My schedule is going to be fun, but not really worth posting about. As before, most of what I do will involve students and I won’t post about their lives here. All I can say is that I’m looking forward to this year. Well, I’m still trying to get used to waking up and getting started at 5:30 AM. That might take a few weeks since all the Jewish holidays are showing up to give us partial weeks.
Writing did get a little progress, which was surprising. I wanted to get some work done during my free periods, but I can’t bring my laptop. The casing is broken, so I can’t close it without things popping. Can’t afford a new one for a while. The only other option was to print out War of Nytefall: Eulogy and edit by hand. Forgot how quickly and thoroughly this is when compared to computer work. I managed to get a chapter section done in a 40 minute period instead of my usual 2-3 hours on a computer. No distractions at all. I might have to do this more often, but the home printer is small and black ink goes quickly. It turns into 2 editing runs too. I’ll be checking the manuscript as I add my changes. Don’t remember the last time I edited like this either. Think it was 2012 or 2013 when I started publishing.
With Rosh Hashana, I have my son and that means fun this weekend. At least if we can muster the energy after school started. Still have some Lego sets to do and I promised one day of video games. Hoping to see family too. Beyond that, it might just be resting and getting whatever else we need for school. Maybe we’ll do an art/editing day where we work on our projects. Should probably do a movie too since we have so much time. I showed him ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ last weekend and had him close his eyes at the scary parts. I don’t know ‘Temple of Doom’ by memory, so we’ll skip that to watch ‘Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade’. One day, we’ll get to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies, but I still don’t think he can make it beyond a 2 hour film.
Speaking of movies and TV, I did watch a bunch since I was exhausted by the end of the day. ‘Rurouni Kenshin: The Final’ was a movie adaptation of the last story arc in the manga. It was good, but I got lost a little with characters not always being named. Still the action was fun. I watched an anime called ‘Samurai Warriors’, which is based off the game and didn’t hold my interest very well. Took me a day to watch 13 episodes, but I don’t remember much. Think it’s a big sacrificial show period for me while I get back into the swing of things. ‘Wise Man’s Grandchild’ is the newest anime I’m watching and it has my interest. So, I’m not touching it when I’m exhausted. Trying to give it a chance. I might watch a classic after this such as ‘Cowboy Bebop’, ‘Outlaw Star’, or ‘Trigun’. Guessing I lost a bunch of people.
Goals of the week?
Cover Art by Alison HuntThe paladins of Windemere have had enough!
As the Vampire Civil War heats up, mysterious murders are being committed against members of every holy order. All signs point to the culprits being vampires, which has resulted in the creation of a unified paladin army. To protect his people, Clyde must find the killers before the holy warriors unleash their purifying crusade. It is a battle against frustrating obstacles as the war inches closer to mortal civilization and ambitious new allies join Nytefall.
One slip is all that is needed for the secret of the Dawn Fangs to be revealed.
The urge to move faster nearly overtakes Lost’s common sense, but she reminds herself that adults are supposed to be patient. As if her mind is trying to undermine her actions, she is on the verge of whistling the first tune that slips into her thoughts. Sucking in her lips, the Dawn Fang pierces them with her fangs to stop them from causing trouble. The pain makes her eyes water and she squishes mud in her hands to hold back a scream. Reaching out with her telepathy, she tries to locate her targets while she lets her unfocused thoughts run their course. A distant prayer to Ram the War God causes her to change her direction and she takes a deep breath to regain her composure. With the paladins so far away, Lost moves a little faster, but stops short of giving in to her silly, impatient urges. Seeing the edge of the tall grass, she drops again and uses her elbows to pull herself along like she remembers seeing Titus do on several missions. As she comes out of her cover, the bright sun blinds her, so she is unable to stop herself from banging into something metal, which falls onto her back.
“Get off of me!” Lost shouts before telekinetically hurling the object into the river. She scrambles to her feet and freezes at the sight of six paladins standing in her path. “Such shiny and pretty armors, you have here. I really like the guy with the big helmet. Is that an ostrich feather? I keep meaning to ride one of those again. So, nice day for a walk. This is bunny who is totally unable to fly. That’s why he’s on my head. Your friend seems okay, so there’s absolutely no reason for us to spend any more time together. Bye!”
“You must be Lost,” Lord Adam says through his great helm. He takes a step forward and holds out a diamond fused to a bronze chain. “We are well aware of you and your abilities, monster. That is why I travel with this. None of your mind tricks will work on those who stand in my presence. Even your keen senses are tricked by the spells designed specifically to thwart your actions. Be honored that we went to so much trouble to design items with you in mind. No other Dawn Fang has earned so much individual attention.”
“That’s kind of creepy,” she replies as she steps back. Seeing weapons getting drawn, she stops retreating and playfully slaps at the mud with her bare feet. “Needed to wash some gunk out from between my toesies. Well, this is awkward. You brought me such a pretty present and I don’t have anything for you. Bunny says that I need to work on my manners. There’s really no need for violence. Dawn Fangs are mostly good. Just like mortals, we have some bad ones, but we’re all individuals like all of you. I mean, we all eat soup the same way, right? I really hope you all use spoons for that comparison to work.”
“Abominations such as you-” the paladin begins to announce.
“Look at the naked heretic!” she shouts while pointing into the distance.
All of the holy warriors, except for Lord Adam, turn to see what Lost is gesturing at, so she flings mud at their leader’s helmet grating. The man coughs and hacks as the Dawn Fang sprints back to the river and launches herself to the other side. A quake meets her as she lands and she nearly topples onto her side, but manages to stumble along. Glancing over her shoulder, she does not see any of the paladins in pursuit and considers slowing down to get her bearings. Lost’s eyes go wide when she sees the powerful steeds rise into the air, arch over the river, and land in a perfect line that immediately charges ahead. The open plains allow the warriors to move at full speed, which is only slightly slower than the sprinting Dawn Fang. They hurl spells and glowing weapons, which return to their hands, but the attacks never hit their mark. Those that come close are deflected by a telekinetic shield, which repeatedly shatters upon impact thanks to Lord Adam’s diamond weakening her even from a distance. With the relic defending the paladins’ minds and muffling their hoofbeats, she has to repeatedly look over her shoulder to make sure none of them have disappeared. To her relief, they never break formation and she gets a sense of their attack pattern, which never falters.

Alucard from Hellsing (Best I could find)
Having to get the book ready to be released soon and starting school, I need a small break from the blog. I can’t do that at the beginning of a month of promo posts (minus Thursdays), so I’m handing it off to Clyde today.
Clyde– Wait. Just like that?
Interviewer– He made me to ask you questions with the hope people ask more in the comments.
Clyde– They never do, but we’ll see what happens. Hit me.
Interviewer– That doesn’t seem safe.
Clyde– Ask a question. Do your job.
Interviewer– I was made a few minutes ago. Fine. How do you feel about this being your second to last book?
Clyde– It feels weird. I mean, I spent nearly two decades in this guy’s head waiting for my chance to shine. The Legends crew was being used that whole time because they were the starting point. Now, I’m nearing the end of my story in the span of five years. So, I’m kind of sad that I can’t go any longer.
Interviewer– Would you like to?
Clyde– Of course, but I know an ending needs to appear. Gotta make room for the next guy and look back fondly at my time. This sounds like we’re talking more about the finale than this one.
Interviewer– Good point. How’s married life treating you?
Clyde– Nice way to reveal that Mab and I took the final step. It’s good, but I haven’t noticed any differences. We still act the same way. I think we did it mostly to get people to stop asking us about it. We were happy being a couple and partners, so the official thing never felt urgent.
Interviewer– I thought it was a sign the war is ending.
Clyde– No. Although, I can see how that would happen. Maybe it will prompt me to put more effort into ending this mess. We’re trying really hard, but the battles are getting tricky. They keep coming very close to drawing mortals into the action. Chastity and Lost have been busy covering our tracks. It’s strange because Xavier didn’t want to be noticed either. He might be getting impatient and sloppy.
Interviewer– Wouldn’t revealing yourself help get assistance with the war?
Clyde– I doubt it. Mortals are going to see monsters battling each other. They won’t be able to tell the difference between the sides because we’ll all come off as violent vampires. You have to remember that my kind were always seen as predators and that’s not going to change with a simple hello in broad daylight. It’s easier to reveal ourselves to the mortals once we’re done with Nyte.
Interviewer– I hear you’re getting some new recruits.
Clyde– Got a few who are interesting. Not much I can say about them because they have to prove themselves. I like their energy . . . Most of the time. The younger Dawn Fangs are beginning to idolize me a wee bit too much for my liking. It can make things awkward, which is why I don’t leave Nytefall that often.
Interviewer– Well, this has been fun, but I want to open the floor to the audience. Are you willing to stay for questions?
Clyde– I don’t have a choice here.
Interviewer– True.
Ciao, SEers! Last time, we talked about clichés in horror and how to fix them. This time, we’re going to look at stereotypes in two more genres and …
More Genre Clichés
(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue. This is a sequel to a previous story. Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s. While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years. I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be. Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin. To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language. Enjoy?)

Nothing makes a noise or even moves in the space skimmer for over two hours. Fate and Hydrana are lying in a barely breathing heap near the crackling telepathic scanner. Artificial brain juice is running down the console and making a pool around the two guardians. The first sign of any life is when they suddenly jump to their feet in shock. Thousands of joint cramps and a few sleeping body parts greet the guardians return to consciousness. It is a greeting that makes both of them want to go back to the painless darkness.
“What the hell happened to us? And, why do you keep saying that I better be sane? Well I am, so don’t worry. Your nasty trick worked just like you planned it and this Neptune guardian is back to normal. Well, as close to normal as I can get. Let’s just say I’m back to perfection and leave it at that. Thanks, Slane,” Hydrana says while she massages her numb legs.
“Your welcome. But I wasn’t talking. I was repeatedly thinking that you better be sane. I take it that you were reading my mind. Guess this is one of those side effects of the cure, which is a lot worse than the disease. The last thing I want is you picking up on my thoughts. Can you still hear them?” asks Fate. He straps the sword of light to his back before sitting onto a large box.
“Not right now. I do have something that can scan us and find out what exactly happened here. The telepathic bond could have only been for a few seconds. God I really hope it was only for a few seconds. There are some private thoughts I don’t want you picking up on.”
“Hold on. I have to ask this before anything else happens, Delila. Do you have any grief about any of the things that you did while you were a raving lunatic? No offense,” mentions Fate.
“Why would I take offense at the truth? Look, I’m really sorry about all of the cops that I hurt and what I did to you and the others. But I am not sorry for what I did to my father. In my mind, he was more sadistic than any of Adriana’s friends. The things he did to me earned him the punishment of life long paralysis. Now he’s as helpless as I was. I told you about the verbal abuse and hinted at the . . . other thing. Miracle knows the basic problem, but I don’t know if she mentioned it to anyone. So, here comes the painful truth of my life. My father sexually abused me every day since I was eight-years-old. Mom and Rose were forced to keep their mouths shut or he beat them up. Hey! I thought about it and nothing happened. I might be cured of the rage and cowering attacks,” explains Hydrana as she gets to her feet. She does a very long stretch to get the kinks out of her shoulders and spine.
“Good for you. Of course, I don’t want this whole problem to happen again. None of us like what you did to your father because it was still wrong. You should have told one of us or you should have gone to the police before you even agreed to become a guardian. Take care of your own problems before you try to fix those of the universe. That’s the best and safest thing to do. If you have to talk to anyone about this or anything else, I’ll listen.”
“I know. Miracle and Infinity are probably going to give me the same tear-jerking speech after we find them. But I swear on my eternal soul that there will be no repeats of the past few days. I promise. Now, where is that lead box that I took with me? Ah, here it is.” She yanks the large box out from under Fate and opens it before the Mars guardian can get off his backside. Hydrana pulls out a large, black diamond, which she places on a clean shelf. She carefully attaches some wires from the damaged scanner and tries to put a charge into it.
“You stole a containment diamond? SEAS is not going to like this stunt. You’ll be lucky if you’re let back on the sun base at all. Those things are beyond impossible to find in this galaxy,” states Fate as the diamond slowly starts to turn red.
“They are also indestructible, which means we can’t destroy them if we tried. I took this one awhile ago in order to put it into one of the space skimmers. That way we could immediately find out about anything new that we run into outside of the sun base. We still don’t know enough to investigate things without the computer’s help. Are you in there, SEAS?”
“Yes. I have already done a brain scan and I have found two side effects. You can read each other’s thought during extreme mental trauma, which I sincerely hope, happens rarely. The other effect is that both of you can track each other by locating brain patterns. I can get rid of these effects once one of you returns to the sun base. That is, if you want me to. What will you two do now?” inquires SEAS. The diamond abruptly goes black again.
“I guess he can’t be out of the sun base’s system for too long. I think we should get rid of these recent improvements, but that will have to wait until we finish everything here. Infinity and Miracle are somewhere in this city along with Adriana’s group, so let’s go find them. Hurry up,” orders Fate.
“Am I your second-in-command?”
“What? We don’t have any time for this. I mean, can’t this question wait for a couple of hours?”
“No. I want to know your decision right this minute. After all I went through, I deserve an answer to the question that helped push me over the edge. You owe me that much, Slane.” Hydrana blocks all the exits with walls of ice and stands directly in front of Fate.
“Fine. The answer is yes. It would have been that answer no matter what you went through. Miracle talked me into it a couple of hours before you decided to attack Infinity.”
“Seriously? Then I just wasted everyone’s time for something I was going to get anyway. I feel like an idiot.”
“Can you feel like an idiot while we move? Steve and Kelly need our help if they managed to run into all four of the evil immortals.” Hydrana gives a quick nod before letting the ice walls down. Both of them leave the inside of the space skimmer in time to see a ball of light shoot into the sky.
