How to Write Point of View, Part 6, Common Pitfalls
(Disclaimer: A warning to those who continue. This is a sequel to a previous story. Both of these were written in the mid-1990’s. While the first one was slightly edited and vanity press published, this one has not been touched in over 20 years. I figure I should do something with it and people may get a laugh or fright from how I used to be. Every author comes from somewhere, so this is part of my origin. To that end, I am deeply sorry for whatever nightmares I will inflict on the literary world and the American English language. Enjoy?)

“Stand still!” shouts Infinity as he fires a few lightning blasts at Draveon. The blasts hit the area that Draveon used to be standing in, but he quickly dives out of the way. He has spent the past few minutes trying to stay behind the large bird while his body heals itself. A few slashes are still on the upper torso and they still bleed every now and then.
“Do you actually think I am stupid enough to listen to you? I pride myself at being a warrior of intelligence. You seem to be more a warrior of cowardice,” says Draveon as he jumps on Infinity’s back. He slams both fists into the back of the guardian’s skull and sends him to the ground.
A wing knocks Draveon into the pavement and the muscular man fights against its strength, so he isn’t crushed. He finally rolls over on the ground, which flips the bird onto its back.
“Such a simple child. You can’t even fight with honor. It is shameful for me to lose this fight if you win by cheating,” mentions Draveon as he gets up. He makes a move towards the museum entrance, but Infinity gets in his way again. This time a foot rakes Draveon’s back and pins him to the ground.
“What are you talking about? I’m doing every in my power to defeat you and that isn’t cheating,” says Infinity.
“Of course you are. But all the other guardians stayed in their real forms and fought me with no powers. You are cheating by turning into a mystical form that isn’t even part of your birthright powers. It is more powerful than anything else that you possess and you use it at the slightest provocation. I do not rely on magical or outside forces to defeat my opponents. This fight is nothing more than you flexing your feathers and cheating to beat me. I would not put it past you since you could not possibly beat me with your normal powers. You are the weakest guardian, Steven. This bird form dependency only proves it,” explains Draveon.
Infinity shifts back into his human form and says, “I don’t need to cheat to beat your ass into the pavement.”
Draveon pushes the boy off the ground and gets to his feet. A quick punch gets him in the jaw, but he decides to push Infinity a few feet away. The guardian charges at the large man with a telekinetic shield around his body. He is a few inches away when Draveon’s left arm shoots out at him. The fist hits the shield and sends Infinity sailing across the street.
“Interesting method. Using your powers on yourself. But they do not stop the force of my punches. Shall we finish this? I have a much more important fight ahead of me and I don’t want to waste my time,” says Draveon as he walks across the street. He is caught off-guard when a jagged pipe is launched at him. It passes through his right shoulder and a low growl of pain escapes Draveon’s lips.
“That was a mistake.” Draveon roars before sprinting at Infinity who is just getting to his feet. A blast of telekinesis hits the large immortal, but he backhands it out of the way. Infinity is slammed into a wall by the force of his own shot as soon as Draveon touches the blast.
“You tricked me,” says Infinity as Draveon gets closer. He tries to jump to the side, but he is hurled through a window when Draveon grabs his cloak. He is about to get up when he feels someone jump on his lower back. Fists begin to pound on his body and air fills with cracking bone. Infinity starts coughing up blood after the sixth punch hits one of his kidneys.
“It was so easy to trick you. Looks like you still have a lot of pride. That is what truly makes you a weak warrior. It looks like I get to kill two guardians on this trip instead of one.” Draveon is about to crush Infinity’s skull with a straight punch when the entire area lights up with yellow energy.
“I’m out of here!” yells Infinity before the floor beneath him turns to dust and he falls into a dark basement. Draveon is left kneeling in a daze while a telekinetic floor keeps him from falling. No matter how hard he hits the yellow energy, he can’t get through.
“Interesting escape tactic. I will have to be careful next time I fight the Earth guardian. But it about time this mission hits endgame,” thinks Draveon as he gets back to the street. A thin layer of snow is starting to form on the wreckage and a stray dog is barking somewhere as the immortal enters the museum.

Spiders . . . I’m really uncomfortable around spiders.
This is probably why I toss them in as scary swarming monsters. They’re always big and give the heroes trouble. The thing is that a giant spider gets boring even if you change up the species. Webbing, poison, fangs, stabby legs, jumping, and those creepy eyes can only get you so far. Sometimes, an author needs to take the icky monsters and make them a whole lot worse.
Well, Windemere has a bunch of monstrous spider species and I haven’t even started with those. In fact, I’ve only done two types from what I remember, but I have others planned. Here’s the list:
That’s all I can remember and find in my array of notes. Spider-Kind was one of many that took 4th place, but I wanted to do it because of all the varieties. It really shows how a fantasy author can take one template and get a lot of mileage out of it. This works great for monsters, which are the animals of your world. After all, real animals have a variety depending on environment, so it should be the same here.
Thank you for sticking with me for these monsters.

Welcome to the final Questions 3 revolving around War of Nytefall. I was trying to think of a way to wrap things up. We’ve done powers, living among mortals, and picking a side in the vampire civil war of Windemere. Let’s jump to the other side of the coin.
Yes, Dawn Fangs are not really a threat to mortals. Some are, but it’s the same as there being mortals who are threats to other mortals. All species have their psychopaths. Still, these are vampires, so you have people who will hunt them down. We’re talking hunters, paladins, adventurers, etc. They have a hard time here since Dawn Fangs require destruction of the heart and brain. They’re also faster and stronger and have those powers, so it’s a dangerous gig. Give a try.

Well, we did the ‘Time Warp’ and Devil Songs already. Lets look for some monster tunes that we don’t typically see. I’ll put the classics on next weekend for actual Halloween due to both tradition and laziness. What? I’ve got a lot to do this week and I lack an assistant or familiar to help me out.
Rest might be an understatement here. I have the entire house to myself until Sunday night, which is rare. Tends to be bittersweet too because I miss having my son around to keep me activity. The only real benefit is that I can settle in both days to input all of the edits to War of Nytefall: Eulogy and get that project done. I have chapters 3-16 to go and really only this weekend to do it. So, I’m going to put my nose to the grindstone and barrel through the large stack that’s gathered some dust. It’s what I’ve been looking forward to all week.
This has been a crazy week too. Meetings and usual workday aside, there was something called the ‘Day of Service and Learning’. This is day where all of the students volunteer for a community service outing. It’s a great concept and I love being a part of it. This is only my second time since Covid prevented it last year. Won’t go into details about what my group did, but it was fun. Nice change from being in the school, especially since the weather was great for the outdoor stuff. I’d even say this event gave me a nice boost of energy to make it through the rest of the week. Really needed it too because I ended everything with my shoulders hurting from stress. Seems my bad shoulder only acts up when I’ve pushed myself too far, which doesn’t surprise me.
Work aside, I had excitement on the parenting front. Last weekend, I got my son a cellphone and that’s been rather dramatic. Thankfully, he’s a good kid who won’t go downloading things and is following the phone rules I’ve given him. The only challenge now is that he hasn’t figured out texting nuances. If people text him a lot while he’s doing homework or hanging out with me then he stops everything to answer until I point out that he has other things to do. Guess I should consider myself lucky that this is the biggest issue I’ve gotten from him with the phone. Other drama is surrounding it, but he’s not the cause. Overall, a successful first week with the new tech.
Oh yeah, I also have to teach him that 50% battery isn’t when you panic. At least not until the phone is paid off and the battery starts draining fast as if it knows. I swear, tech always knows when its warranty is up.
With work and parenting, I didn’t do much else. My nights were spent trying to fit in some editing or just resting with television until I fell asleep. The weather was strange this week with it being really cold at the beginning and then warming up halfway through. Probably why I didn’t sleep well near the end. At least I have the weekend to kind of sleep in, but I really don’t want to be lazy. I want War of Nytefall: Eulogy to be done by Sunday night with only the blurb and remaining December posts to go. Be great if I can have most of November to rest and plan. Maybe I’ll do the cover reveal this Thursday.
Going back to television, I don’t have anything that interesting to talk about since I don’t think I have that large an anime audience here. What I’m watching is called ‘Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple’. I like it. The main character is a kid who is always getting bullied until he is introduced to six eccentric martial arts masters. They train him even though he lacks any natural talent and he starts defending himself. The problem is that behind every bully is an even bigger one looking for a fight. There’s a good amount of humor and Kenichi never comes off as strong even if he wins a fight. You see him train and fail, so it drives home the fact that he’s getting by on determination and courage. Nice change from the heroes I see who are gifted from the beginning.
Not much to say about next week. It’s leading into Halloween, which should be fun. I hope that means the week will go a little easier than usual. For some reason, I want to say there’s something going on, but I’m too drained to figure it out.
Final note: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DECEMBER RELEASE OF THE FINAL “WAR OF NTYEFALL” BOOK!
