An Interesting Story with Despicable Characters

Jobless Reincarnation

A while back, I watched this anime called ‘Jobless Reincarnation’.  I’d seen people mention it online and it seemed to have a following.  Sounded like a standard Isekai (person transported to another dimension) and I didn’t dig deep enough to found out that it was controversial.  That happened after I watched the first few episodes . . . Then, I got really confused.

Now, the story is about a jobless asshole who dies in our world and is reborn in a fantasy world.  Even as a baby, his 40-year-old past life mind is inside his brain, so you get to hear his thoughts.  They sure are some thoughts.  He’s a pervert and not the kind that gets his comeuppance because nobody can hear his thoughts.  The few times he seems to get caught spying on bathing women, stealing panties, and being a horrible letch come with no consequences.  I can see why people hated this series and that was before I got to the grooming part.  Keep in mind that this show only comes newborn until eleven or something.  Some other characters are just as bad as him too like his adulterous father, who has a baby with their maid.  There’s no consequence for that either.  It truly was a mesmerizingly horrific display of characters with maybe the murder who goes after anyone who even threatens a child as the most moral of the group.

Yet, I watched it all because I just couldn’t look away. Why?

First, the characters weren’t terribly written.  They were just horrible people and written well enough to make me despise many of them.  This was included with a story that was fairly interesting.  This newborn grows up with great magical power and is learning about this world.  He goes to school and gets stronger, but not enough to be unbeatable since he screws up and gets pummeled a lot.  A disaster happens and throws the entire world into chaos, so now he has to survive alongside one of the girls he was with.  They want to return home with the help of an infamous killer who is trying to soften his reputation since he is not really evil.  They also try to find out if their loved ones survived the disaster and how they can find them.  So, there is a lot of heart in the story, but it battles the despicable personalities of the characters.

As someone who loves to connect to characters and enjoys good stories, I found myself in conflict.  I couldn’t connect to anyone and sometimes hoped for a few characters to die, which never happened.  The story and world kept me going along with a desire to see consequences.  Maybe that kind of happened at the end, but not enough for me to think the scales have been balanced.  There really wasn’t a sense of redemption even if some characters took a first step.  Not that I trusted the step because I can’t remember if any of them actually accepted their past mistakes and apologized.

I can totally see why so many people on forums said ‘It is a great anime/manga with a great story, but I really can’t recommend it.’  This thing can be fairly triggering to certain people.  Some of the manipulations done gave me shivers because I remember being on the receiving end of that kind of bullshit.  Really made me question why such a story existed.

My curiosity did lead me to look up why this thing was written and if there was a point to the despicable characters.  Supposedly, the author wanted to have these characters be terrible and heavily flawed.  He wanted to see if they could eventually be redeemed after their actions.  So, the perverted main hero would probably reach a point where he saw women as humans instead of options to lose his virginity.  At least, that’s what it sounded like and many people don’t seem to have the patience or desire to redeem.  After all, these are sexual transgressions and not violent ones.  The former tends to be harder for people to forgive than the latter.

That brings me to the big question: Can a despicable character gain redemption in the eyes of readers?  Is it possible after they’ve been terrible for so long?  I can’t figure out an answer for myself.  Not enough happened in the series to earn forgiveness and I’m aware that the story keeps going.  So, I can’t take a stance since I haven’t, and probably won’t, get back into it.  Doesn’t give me the urge to try the experiment either because I’d hate the backlash. What does everyone else think?

Poetry Day: Curse of the Immortal

Dracula

(This one is rather self-explanatory.  For a long time, I’ve been fascinated by immortality and the mental/emotional impact it would have on a person.  It really does come off as a curse unless one cuts off their ability to make connections.)

*****

He will live forever

To see the end of time

No disease can end his life

And every wound will heal

For his immortality is pure

With a never-ending pain

He will see his loved ones die

Knowing they have gone to dust

He will yearn to have a friend

Who lives as long as he

It is a wish the gods won’t grant

As he travels time alone

The Coming of Age Story

Breakfast Club

The above is probably one of the biggest examples from my generation.  ‘The Breakfast Club’ was always a big ‘coming of age’ story.  It had a group of high schoolers in detention where they got to know each other.  They grew up a bit over the course of the movie and changed.  This is what a ‘coming of age’ story tends to be.

At least, that’s what I think it is.

The truth is that I’ve never been clear on this type of story.  Growing up, it was all about real-world teenagers maturing and getting closer to adulthood.  I’ve heard other people use the phrase to describe movies where a character loses their innocence and find out how harsh the world is.  Others simply use it when a story has a teenage protagonist because they assume growth will take place.  It makes it rather confusing to figure out the exact definition.

I guess the common thread is that a character will change in a way that they become more of an adult.  This can be different from person to person because we don’t always see adulting as the same thing.  One may view it as growing up and making mature decisions while casting away childish things.  Others define it as losing their sense of wonder and accepting they have to stop playing around.  Guess it’s an optimistic or pessimistic view of growing up, which can sway a person into using the ‘coming of age’ term.  No wonder it isn’t a stable genre.

This brings me to ‘coming of age’ stories in fantasy.  I’d been told that Legends of Windemere counted, so I have it as an Amazon keyword/phrase.  Yet, I never really thought about it until now.  Luke Callindor does start as an arrogant, immature teenager and grows into adulthood over the course of the adventure.  He does this through a series of victories, losses, traumas, and other experiences.  Same goes for Nyx and Sari, who are in the same age bracket.  Delvin, Timoran, and Dariana are older or more experienced, so they don’t really fall into this category.  Yet, I do think ‘coming of age’ could work for a series that has its heroes mature.

Maturation and change is the key here.  ‘Coming of age’ can’t work with static characters because they end where they started.  For a teenager that means staying immature and not learning from their experiences.  To be fair, we all know at least one adult that would fit this description.  Yet, that is not the type of character one wants as a protagonist.  For this kind of story to work, there needs to be change and they have to be less childish than when they started.  It doesn’t mean throwing away their hobbies, but to see the world in a more adult way . . . No, I don’t know how that works either.

Every time I write one idea about this concept, I come up with more questions and scenarios.  ‘Coming of age’ differs in people thanks to their own experiences, upbringing, worldview, and aspirations.  A story where the person matures to leave the dreams of running a business behind to work on their art wouldn’t be seen as an adult decision to some people.  Others would have the same issues with the opposite journey.  So, you aren’t going to hit the target with every reader.  Those who would mature in that way or at least understand why it’s appealing may see it as a ‘coming of age’ story.  Since those tend to be uplifting and positive, you really need readers to think the change is for the better on some level.  Can’t really predict that all the time.

So, what do other people think of ‘coming of age’ stories?  Do you have a good idea of what they are supposed to be about?

Author Month: The Dreaded Advice

Google Image Search

We all know about authors giving advice to other authors.  Some tips have been uttered by people so famous that you’d think they are unbreakable laws.  Others get tossed around so much that they’re simply empty or have multiple meanings.  The truth is that advice in the world of writing is really ‘take it or not’.  Yet, people grab onto an insight and run with it to the extreme.  It can get silly.

So, what am I getting at?

I’m wondering where the lesser heard advice is hiding.  Not the adages and things that we’ve heard ad nauseum.  The tips that authors have discovered on their own through experience.  For example, I don’t see many people saying:

‘What works for one author, won’t always work for another.  Follow your own path and do what feels right for your style and story.’

I say this a lot and it’s usually when I’m faced with someone telling me that I should do something that worked for them.  It could be changing my style to past tense or sending out a newsletter every 3 days.  Sometimes I try their suggestions and other times I don’t feel like they’re going to work for me.  Many times I’ve done something that worked great for one author and it does nothing for me.  So, the tools and styles we come up with have to be unique.

Anyway, what’s a piece of advice that you’ve come up with?

Matilda’s Magical Millinery

Google Image Search

Welcome to our magical millinery!  We have every type of hat you can imagine.  If it isn’t in stock, we’ll get it to you in a few business days.  Depends on how tired the crafting kobolds are in the back.  Now, here is a partial list made up of our most common requests and what they do.  Also, please stay in designated areas.  Some of our products can get a little nippy around this time of day.

  • Beanie–  Grants a 360 degree view of the world.  Your mind is subconsciously aware of it, which means it acts as a danger sense.  It can also tell you when someone you recognize is nearby.  May cause motion sickness in crowds.
  • Fedora– Wearers can travel through the dreams of others.  Downside is that you will turn these dreams into nightmares and have the urge to kill.
  • Pillbox–  Possesses a dimensional pocket for item storage.  A quarter of the stored objects’ weight is added to the hat.
  • Sun Hat– Aside from its natural shading ability, the wearer’s skin is kept at a comfortable temperature.  Taking the hat off in the heat will result in a shock to your system.
  • Top Hat– Power to communicate with rabbits and doves.  Downside is that they rarely have anything interesting to say beyond food, mating, and perfecting their plan to overthrow the human race.  (It’s been years and they haven’t gotten very far, so don’t worry.)
  • Bowler– Can be thrown like a boomerang to attack things or, if tape is added, bring small objects back.  No promise on your ability to catch the hat upon its return.
  • Beret– Able to summon raspberries in berry or jam form.  No downsides.
  • Baseball Cap– Grants the ability to precisely hit balls with sticks and catch balls that have been struck.  Does not guarantee an interest in actually playing or watching baseball.
  • Fez– The tassel can spin and allow the wearer to fly for short distances.  Will not stay attached to head, so you have to hold it in place.
  • Pith Helmet– Wearer gains enhanced senses, but they only work while in the wilderness.  Jungle-like heat and humidity will be constantly felt.
  • Wizard Hat–  No powers, but people demand that we have it in stock.  Maybe it helps you roll better during Dungeons & Dragons games.  We don’t really know.
  • Tricorne– Each corner is capable of firing a laser with varying intensity.  One is like a laser sight, another is for heating things up, and the third will disintegrate whatever it touches.  No way to know which is which until you test and mark accordingly.
  • Stetson– Natural horse riding ability.  Your legs will remain bowed until you spend 30 minutes without the hat.
  • Sombrero– While not bestowing powers, it can be enlarged for the wearer to hide inside when threatened.  This hat is heavily armored and can even hold off a nuclear explosion.
  • Dunce Cap– Only ordered by teachers who have stopped giving a shit.  Power is given to the person who gives the hat.  That power is increased apathy.
  • Mitre–  Grants the wearer high charisma and low level telepathy.  Downside is person will eventually believe they are speaking with God.  Unnerved by how popular this hat is.

Goal Post: Thanksgiving Past and Present

The holiday is almost over.  I say almost because we’re doing Thanksgiving today since this is my year with my son.  It’s okay.  As long as family gets together for food.  This has always been an average holiday for me anyway.  I enjoy most of the sides and desserts, but I really don’t like turkey.  So, the feast doesn’t have the same appeal as Hanukkah latke day or Halloween candy.

I’m also burnt out on the feast concept.  The short work/school week was filled with preparing food for a feast.  This is always a challenge because you inevitably get a ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ situation.  I’m not much of a chef with this holiday, so I’m practically useless.  It also comes with a sense of tension that you find in preparing for any big event.  You want it to be memorable and a success, but you wear yourself down to the point where you might not enjoy the outcome.  Plus side, I got to see several graduated students, which was a great end to the work week.

Honestly, I’ve been exhausted all week.  A big factor is that I haven’t been sleeping the best and the weather shifting to rain set off my sinuses.  Starting to think I have asthma too, which seems to be another parting gift of Covid.  Breathing always gets tougher when the weather turns rainy and frigid.  Makes me worry about when it comes time to shovel the snow.  Only time will tell there.

Another reason I’m tired is that I spent all of last weekend finishing a project:

ALL PAPERBACKS AVAILABLE!

That link should go to my Amazon author page where you can click on the paperback option.  I did it for Legends of WindemereWar of NytefallLife & Times of Ichabod BrooksQuest of the Brokenhearted, and Bedlam.  I announced this on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram already.  You wouldn’t believe the response I’ve gotten since people were asking for this . . .

That would be absolutely nothing.  I know this is something that had to be done, but I still feel a little scammed here.  There have been plenty of times I’ve provided a version of a book or done something highly recommended with no payoff.  It’s up there with people praising characters and stories while admitting that they haven’t even bought a copy of the book.  This is a big reason I’ve lost some of my ambition and keep questioning why I still bother.  Empty lip service doesn’t give a person hope or push them ahead.  It does the opposite because the words have no actions behind them.  In the end, a person who keeps running into this type of support won’t be able to accept real support because they’ll think it’s fake.  Just something to think about here.

The rest of the weekly goals weren’t too bad.  I finished the January posts once I finally got the energy.  Only managed to use the bike once due to errands and having to clean for the weekend.  Homework and meetings limited the father/son time until now.  Black Friday shopping went somewhat smoothly, but it got pricier than I expected.  Think I gave the credit card company a freak out because I had to explain that it was indeed me making the purchases.  At least they’re watching out for me.  We’ll see if I get to sleep in tomorrow since we have a full house, including a munchkin who wakes up with the sun.

I managed to go over the outline for Darwin & the Demon Game, but I wasn’t able to rewrite it.  The weather changing made me feel like I had been hit by a bus and my sinuses were killing me.  Took me all day to simply read through the three pages since I kept needing a nap.  I covered the original in notes of where I can shore up the plot and expand on some characters.  One was important, but got killed off too early.  Not sure if I’ll work on it throughout the week or save it for next weekend.  Depends on how I’m feeling and what else I want to tackle.

Only other accomplishment was touching the Phi Beta Files notebook.  It was only one character and I struggled because I couldn’t remember what I wanted to do with this group of rivals.  Freaking out a bit that I took too long to get back to this idea and I can’t remember enough to continue.  Might have to use next weekend to make progress and get it back on track.  Doesn’t help that I went hunting for another story idea and the notebook is nowhere to be found.  It was the Keys of Ether monsters, which I can’t find anywhere in my room.  That means I lost 100 monsters and every piece of plot information I had on this one.  Got a bad feeling that it went missing during the move from Florida, which means it’s been gone for about 13 years.  Then again, I vaguely recall working on it when I was up here, but it’s missing now.

Not sure how much planning I should make for this week.  It’s the first of four where I don’t have a day off.  That’s going to leave me fairly tired.  Add in the inevitable rush of tests and assignments leading to the Holiday Break, which I’ll be juggling as a TA and a parent.  This is why I’m not going to tackle Darwin & the Demon Game until that long break starts.  Maybe I should only aim for the February posts and making progress on notebook work.  That sounds more doable, especially since my anxiety has been giving me some issues.  It’s only rearing up at night and first thing in the morning, but it’s definitely making an impact. Sleep has been broken some nights and I’m paying for it.

Television-wise . . . I finished ‘Warrior Nun’ Season 2, which was fun.  Decided to try an anime called ‘Overlord’ again.  Think I made a post where I used it as an example of how not to do an OP main character.  Figured I’d give it a shot and look at it as a story where there is no real tension.  Just a blunt power fantasy.  I’m a little further than I made it last time and I’m enjoying it a bit more.  Guess I was taking it too seriously or looking at it the wrong way last time.

Goals of the week:

  1. Thanksgiving feast today
  2. Try to sleep when I can.
  3. Homework with son.
  4. Outline for Darwin & the Demon Game.
  5. Touch on Phi Beta Files.
  6. Bike at least twice this week.
  7. Get a haircut.
  8. Make sloppy joe’s on Thursday.
  9. Try to get anxiety under more control, especially at night.
