Dracula
(This one is rather self-explanatory. For a long time, I’ve been fascinated by immortality and the mental/emotional impact it would have on a person. It really does come off as a curse unless one cuts off their ability to make connections.)
*****
He will live forever
To see the end of time
No disease can end his life
And every wound will heal
For his immortality is pure
With a never-ending pain
He will see his loved ones die
Knowing they have gone to dust
He will yearn to have a friend
Who lives as long as he
It is a wish the gods won’t grant
As he travels time alone
Well done, Charles! When I read your poem, I thought of “The Wanderings of Oisin,” which also captures the ennui of immortality.

But I especially think of the Eternals. I didn’t see the movie, but I read Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel.

Forgot about the Eternals. Never knew Gaiman worked on them either.

Has to be better than the movie.

We might be mixing up the Endless (Neil Gaiman’s creation) with the Eternals (Marvel Comics/Jack Kirby’s creation). Of the two, Gaiman definitely got the better film treatment.

It looks like Gaiman and John Romita Jr did an Eternals comic in 2008. Not sure how long the run went for.

Wonderful poem, Charles. The other side of the curse I see is being stuck with people who grate on your nerves for all eternity! This concept has always fascinated me too 💕🙂

Never thought of that side. Although, I guess it’s easy to just walk away from them. Immortal or not, the world is a big enough place to allow avoidance.

The trade-off for immortality sounds like a high price, indeed.

I’ve kind of taken this approach with my witches. They live a long time if not forever. I’ve been purposely vague about this. Eventually they get a little crusty about some things and tend to withdraw from society.

Happens to people who live into their golden years. Not surprised it would happen to immortals. You eventually stop being able to keep up with changes.

Makes a better impact when one of them gets murdered, too. Kind of like Tolkien’s elves.

Murdered immortals is always a fun story.
