Ask a Character: Gabriel, God of Destiny

Today, I’m pulling out one of my gods for an interview.  Gabriel is the God of Destiny and the Lord of Hell.  In Windemere, Hell is only the plane of fire, but there are demons and anyone killed by fire spends a little time there before being picked up by their chosen deity.  He also has the power to cast magic by singing, tamed the black unicorn, and wears armor forged from the extinct Phantom Dragon.  He’s one of the most powerful beings in Windemere.

So, ask your questions and see what the pompous, arrogant bastard says.

The Crying Demon

A demon with a tear

An emotionless mask

My mask

If I am this mask

Why does my heart decide?

It is an organ of caring

But that should not push me

Do not misunderstand

I do care

I want to help

Yet my heart

Is always crushed

And I still think with it

Feel with it

Only to be hurt again

Is that what my mask is

An emotionless face of a demon

With a heart

Too stubborn to die

This is another ‘From Israel’ poem and I’m seeing a big theme of heartbreak in them.  This specific poem came after a weird sculpting lesson during one of the middle weeks.  We were told to make masks that shows our inner being, but think very little about it.  At least that’s what I think it was because at the time I was in a dark place.  So, I made a demon mask and then I added tears to it.  Sadly, the mask didn’t make it through the flight back from Israel.

Guest Blog: Mood, Characters, & Chaos

Check out my guest post on The D/A Dialogues. A fun and insightful conversation between some of my characters. Goodbye, fourth wall.

Charles Yallowitz's avatarThe D/A Dialogues

While A is away, the blog is still going to play – enjoy this guest post from Charles Yallowitz, from Legends of Windemere. Please, visit his blog and enjoy!

So, I’ve been asked to do a little guest blog for D and A.  The topic is on how I interact with characters and how that alters or develops the story.  Now, I believe our interactions with our characters are one of the driving forces of our writing.  I’ve been ask by D and A to bring some friends to help explain this point.  I decided to bring Luke Callindor and Sari from Legends of Windemere, Clyde the vampire from a future project, and Sin the adventurous thief from another future project.

Darwin Slepsnor: I’m here too!

Me: This illustrates my point.  I didn’t want to bring Darwin, but he came here any way.  So, where should we…

Feeling Helpless

Like a screaming child
I feel lost and scared
As I hear your plight
Too far to give a hand
And barely lend an ear

I can only sit and wait
For flitting chances
To be the friend you need
The friend I am
Even through a screen

I feel helpless
A feeble spectator
With a heavy heart
Only able to cheerAcross our great divide

Every morning I wake
Hoping for a sign
That you are happy
And smiling
All those miles away

Summer Slump & Goals

I haven’t done a post on how Beginning of a Hero is doing for a long time.  The reason is because it isn’t doing much.  The summer slump and delay on the sequel have taken their toll.  I’ve yet to appear on the eReader News Today newsletter, which isn’t surprising since I’m sure it’s a long list.  So, I don’t know how effective that is going to be.

I keep wondering if I should hunt down another interview or guest blog.  Part of me thinks I should save some for the release of the sequel because I do think that will help me and patience is key.

Still, I see other indie authors are already at multiple books even during a period that is supposedly a rough time to be an indie author.  It gets oddly frustrating to feel like I’m being left behind.  Will I return stronger than before?  Very good chance of that since the first book was so popular.  It’s just very difficult to see all of the momentum I gained go into dormancy.

What to do?  Keep writing The Compass Key and working toward the final edit of Family of the Tri-Rune.  Stop looking at the Amazon ranking too.  At least until I get a notification from eReader News Today to see what happens.  Also, figure out a few decent posts to make.

Goals of the week?

  1. Finish another chapter of The Compass Key.
  2. Outline more of Curse of the Dark Wind.
  3. Read.
  4. Blog.
  5. Possibly do a little character designing on The Slumber Wars.
  6. Continue dealing with that personal problem that has me off my mental game.
  7. Continue working on special project.
