Test Scene: It Had to Come Down to This

I came up with an idea for a much later book.  It’s part of the final battle between Nyx and Trinity, which isn’t a spoiler because it’s made very clear that they are going to have a fight like this.  My question has always been the how.  They are incredibly powerful spellcasters, which usually leads to a draw.  So, I came up with the following.  It is more the middle of their battle and I would change it to include some spoiler-level info.

The smoke from the magical explosion clears as Nyx and Trinity get to their feet. Gentle tinkling of broken crystal draws Trinity’s attention to her palms and forehead. Her enhancer gems are shattered and falling to the ground, their destruction bringing tears to her eyes. With a primal growl, she lashes out at Nyx with a spell that sputters on her fingertips. She looks up to see Nyx arrogantly smile and try to throw her own spell, but only a trail of smoke wafts off her palms.

“You locked my magic,” they say together.

They stare at each other in silence until Trinity draws her stiletto from her boot. She flips it in the air a few times before tossing it over a nearby boulder. An approving smile crosses her face when she watches Nyx throw her mourning star and crossbow away.

“I can’t walk away from this fight, Nyx,” Trinity announces, sliding into a martial arts stance. The muscles in her long legs flex as she prepares to move. “If you don’t want to finish this fight then leave.”

“Stop tal-” begins Nyx before Trinity sprints at her. She is unable to block or retreat as the quick chaos elf hits her with a kick to the head.

Nyx stumbles to the side and gets her arms up to block another kick. She pushes the leg away and dives in to punch Trinity in the stomach, feeling an explosion of breath hit her neck. A knee strikes Nyx in the shoulder before her enemy flips over her. The solid kick to her shoulders sends her flying forward, landing on her hands and knees. Nyx immediately flips onto her back and swings her legs, catching the pouncing chaos elf in the chin.

“Bar fighting won’t help you,” Trinity mutters through her aching jaw. “I’ve been training to fight without magic since childhood.”

“I’ve been sparring with my friends,” Nyx declares, rolling to her feet and charging. She tackles Trinity, receiving a painful elbow strike to the shoulder. “Try having daily bouts with a barbarian and trying to keep up with a forest tracker and a gypsy. I think I’m more than a match to handle you.”

Trinity throws Nyx against a boulder and swings for a chop to the throat. Nyx manages to block her arm and grab the wrist, but she is gracefully pulled in for a choke hold. She can feel Trinity trying to snap her neck, but the struggling makes it difficult. Out of desperation, Nyx turns her head to bite into the soft flesh of Trinity’s hand. The chaos elf curses as she lets go while Nyx hold her bite to twist Trinity’s arm behind her back. Releasing her enemy’s hand, Nyx grabs Trinity around the waist and hurls her over her head.  Trinity lands back first against a slab of rock and groans as she gets to her feet.

“What kind of move was that?” she asks, examining her bleeding hand. “You fight like a rabid beast.”

“I may be better trained, but I’ll always be a bar brawler,” Nyx proudly answers.

They charge at each other and crash like a pair of raging bulls. Nyx catches Trinity and slams her into the ground only to have her legs taken out from underneath her by a kick to her knees. Trinity pounces on Nyx’s back and begins beating on her head until Nyx flips her over and gets on her chest. The half-elf continuously slams her fist into her enemy’s face while knees strike her lower back. Trinity uses her legs to hook Nyx’s shoulders and they flip again with Trinity pinning the half-elf’s arms down. The beating is just as brutal as the one Nyx performed and Trinity grins as she feels blood on her knuckles. Nyx grabs a small stone and expertly flicks it into Trinity’s eye.

“You little-” Trinity starts to shriek.

Nyx grabs her by the hair and slams her face first into a boulder, letting the chaos elf collapse at her feet. Spitting blood on the grass, Nyx takes a few steps back and tries to get her aching head to clear.

“Get up!” she shouts at Trinity. “Get the hell up!”

Trinity fluidly rolls and flips at Nyx, driving her legs into the half-elf’s chest. As Trinity lands on her feet, Nyx trips over a boulder and falls on her side. The crack of broken ribs is like a siren song to the chaos elf, who leaps at the grimacing half-elf. Nyx gets her knees up to catch Trinity and grabs her by the wrists as they roll to their feet. With a shout, Nyx pulls on Trinity’s arms and slams her forehead against the chaos elf’s face.

“Savage brute!” Trinity yells, stumbling back.

“Losing your composure, your highness?” Nyx mockingly asks as she reaches out to grab Trinity again.

Spinning her around, Nyx attempts to smash Trinity’s head against a boulder. A tight fist grabs the back of her head and pushes her forward. The two woman slam each other’s head into the solid stone, leaving matching blood marks on its surface. They collapse to their knees, but find the energy to drag themselves away from each other. Using the boulders, they get to their feet and stare at each other.

“You know how this is going to end, Nyx,” Trinity gasps, pushing away to walk forward.

“To the death,” Nyx says with a cruel smile. “That’s how it was always going to end.”

Keep Poking the Tiger. I Dare You.

Ever have a day
Where people poked and prodded?
Not caring of your mood
Deciding you’re too docile
To act beyond a snarl
Breathing comes in heavy bursts
Red edges all you see
Still they carry on
Verbal sticks upon your fur
Coaxing you into a rage
Growling goes unheared
So you slink away to hide
Curling up and waiting
Silently daring them to poke again
Incurring your predatory wrath

Generations of Immaturity

You scoff at our decisions
Because they are not the ones you like

You criticize our choices
Because you believe you know best

You crow about your experience
Because you refuse to be told no

You swear that you took no help with us
Because your parents were always underfoot

You remind us of the damage that we do
Because you never made mistakes

You tell us about the horrid future that we build
Because you are the parental prophet

You pout and curse when refuse your path
Because you are the most mature around

We tell you thank you, but please go away
Because we are not as stupid as you think

Beginning of a Hero Goodreads Quiz

I’ve been eying the quizzes on Goodreads and wondering if I should make one for Beginning of a Hero.  I’m just having trouble making 25-30 questions.  I’d be happy if anyone has suggestions or feedback on what I already have:

  1. What is Fizzle’s favorite food?
  2. What is the name of Fritz Warrenberg’s riding sheep?
  3. What can the Hellfire Elf’s sword do?
  4. Who is Luke working for?
  5. What subject does Nimby teach?
  6. What game does Nimby and Theresa Marley play for information?
  7. What was Selenia Hamilton’s profession before founding the academy?
  8. What are Kevin Masterson’s injuries?
  9. How does Betty cook the nutritional mush that the students eat?
  10. What kind of contest are Fritz and Nimby involved in?
  11. What is the name and area of Aedyn Karwyn’s god?
  12. What does Theresa Marley do when she first meets Luke?
  13. Why is Daniel Skyblade important to his dragon, Cyphon?
  14. How did Fizzle learn speak ‘English’?
  15. What kind of trophy is behind Selenia’s desk?
  16. What kind of dog is Stiletto?
  17. Where does Luke first meet Kellia?
  18. What happens to Kira when she is sparring with Luke?
  19. How does Duggan know Luke’s father?

That’s all I have.  I can’t think of any good Lich questions.  Any ideas?

Unlimited Ammo and One-Handed Greatswords? (Part 1 of a Series)

Cloud from Final Fantasy 7

We’ve all seen or read about it.  An 8-shot revolver having 10 bullets?  An enormous sword being wielded by a slender warrior?  Standing a few feet away from an explosion and not getting touched?  These can be great scenes and effects to use, but you trade believability for this.  The only way to pull it off is to make it a standard for the world and that only works with melee weapons.  Take Cloud for example.  He’s an enhanced human and in a world where other people are wielding gigantic butter knives, so he can get away with it.  If your guy is the only one who can do such an act without any explanation then you’re probably being lazy.

The next few Wednesdays I’m going to post about this topic and hit the three major combat categories.  Range, melee, and bare-handed each have their own rules and research requirements.  I’m still thinking about one on explosions/lasers/magic, so we’ll see how that one goes.  For today, I’m going to do an overall.  I’ll end this entire series on a ‘How to Write Action Scenes’ list.

This might be me nit-picking or being paranoid about my own writing, but you how to know your weapons if you plan on using them.  Not down to the final part unless you’re having a character take a gun apart and explain it.  You need to know how they work, their strengths, their weaknesses, and their maintenance.  For example, The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe had it right.  You have to clean off your sword.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read a book or seen a movie where somebody sheathes a bloody blade.  It’s horrible maintenance, at least that’s how I see it.  The blood would dry in the sheathe and the blade can rust.  As for magic blades, show some respect for them.

The key to solving this issue is research.  I’m not talking about reading fiction books and watching movies to see what has been done.  You’ll get an idea of what you can get away with like the jumping through air while firing two guns cliche.  Another favorite is the precision hurling of full-sized swords, which weren’t designed to be thrown.  A hilt is not aerodynamic.  I’m rambling, but my point here is that you should know what you’re doing with weapons and combat to make it clear and somewhat believable.  A reader/viewer might be willing to give you some leeway on a few issues, but don’t push it.

Here is what I do for my weapon research.  Remember that I work in fantasy, so this is mostly for melee weapons and bows:

  1. Research the specific blade or bow that I want to use.  By research, I mean read about their use and analyze pictures of the weapon.  Get it in your mind.  For example, I looked for sabers to get a better idea of Luke’s fighting style.
  2. See if you can find videos that show the weapon being used.  It’s not easy for melee weapons when you get to the obscure, but it really helps you get an idea of the limitations of a weapon.  For guns, it can help you see how it is held and the power of the kickback.  Is that the term?
  3. When writing an action scene and putting in the moves, feel free to stop.  Then stand up and slowly try to imitate the actions.  Go for a few moves to see where they will lead because many times you will write into a trap.  For example, your hero swings and misses, leaving his side open with no hope of recovery.  Oops.
  4. Learn it yourself.  If you have the opportunity to get some hands-on practice then you should take it.  Try archery for your bowmen and fencing for your swordsmen.  Visit a firing range if you wish.  One thing that I’ve done at times is friendly sparring with fake weapons.  There are groups for this kind of stuff and I’m sure they would let you in if you asked them to help.

Those are the big rules of mine when it comes to combat research.  As with most things, research is key.  Hopefully this series of informative posts helps people with their action scene writing.

Review: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower by Charles Yallowitz

Review of my upcoming sequel, Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.

C.N. Faust's avatarC.N. Faust

prodigy  Rating: 5 Stars

Once again, I am impressed with Charles Yallowitz’s storytelling as well as his ability to bring something new   to the table with each turn of the page. Prodigy of a Rainbow tower surpasses its predecessor, Beginning of a Hero, and lures the reader into a lush world of adventure and magic.

I am not often a fan of sequels (in a series, I usually jump favorites from book 1 to 3) but Prodigy is an exception. Aside from characters and plot, I just love seeing the writing style develop. Rather than lose his voice halfway through, as tends to happen with some authors, Yallowitz remains strong until the end. Prodigy is definitely not an “in between” booklet. It is definitely a must-read.

This series is very enticing to the active reader who is seeking to get lost in a story. I find myself even enjoying Luke…

Carob Tree

It grew from nowhere

To help

Two starving men

A brightening miracle

In a cave

Of darkness

For twelve years

It nourished them

And when it thought it was done

Another year must pass

The men studied

Prayed

And ate

Oh, how they ate

Without even a

Simple

Thank you

In Israel, I was told about the Carob tree.  I was told the following (taken from Wikipedia for summing up):

The Jewish Talmud features a parable of altruism, commonly known as “Honi and the Carob Tree”, which mentions that a carob tree takes 70 years to bear fruit; meaning that the planter will not benefit from his work, but works in the interest of future generations.

Send Me An Angel by Scorpions

While listening to my Pandora mix, I started to wonder about bands of today.  One is that I nothing about them because I’ve hit that age.  The other is that I don’t hear a lot of bands doing mixing styles like this.  Listen to ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’ and then jump into this.  An interesting switch.  Does anyone do the rock ballad any more?  Seriously, let me know of any bands that have the versatility of the older groups.

Also, I love this song.

Ask a Character: Gabriel, God of Destiny

Today, I’m pulling out one of my gods for an interview.  Gabriel is the God of Destiny and the Lord of Hell.  In Windemere, Hell is only the plane of fire, but there are demons and anyone killed by fire spends a little time there before being picked up by their chosen deity.  He also has the power to cast magic by singing, tamed the black unicorn, and wears armor forged from the extinct Phantom Dragon.  He’s one of the most powerful beings in Windemere.

So, ask your questions and see what the pompous, arrogant bastard says.
