Women of Windemere: Kellia Poetry

I Am Kellia

I am strength
Show no weakness
Shed no tears
I must be the pillar
That others need

I will never play the fool
Or call such one a friend
My allies shall be true
Serious and strong
To suit my rules

I let no one in
My truth is mine
To keep within my breast
Though I feel a thawing
From one so noble

Forced to Grow

A harsh birth
Met with mother’s death
Raised by a fearful father
Protected
Shielded from the world
By walls of every kind

She found ways
To slip outside and play
A greater strength
Than her father knew
Allowing her freedom
Behind his fretful back

Still she grew
More among adults
Than those she could call friend
She matured
At a rapid pace
Leaving childishness behind

Women of Windemere: Kellia

A few weeks ago, Kayla Matt contacted me about drawing the female characters of Windemere.  She did an amazing job.  Today, I’m showcasing her drawings of Kellia along with poems, videos, and an excerpt.

Kellia is the tough girl at Hamilton Military Academy, who Luke Callindor continuously runs into.  Stronger than average and very stubborn, Kellia makes for interesting interactions with our heroes.  Whether she’s really tough, putting up an act, or the Hellfire Elf in disguise, you have to read to find out.

An IM/CY Production: Arrow in the Butt

In association with Ionia Martin.

You feel something . . . like an arrow in the butt?

You feel something . . . like an arrow in the butt?

Ionia:  Hey, Charles. So I was walking through Windemere the other day and saw the weirdest thing.

Charles:  A troll dancing with a teddy bear?  I keep meaning to lock him up.

Ionia:  Well, yeah. I saw that too. But no. It was even weirder than that. There Luke was, just kind of hanging out, reading your book and smiling and then ZING! There was an arrow in his butt.

Charles:  That had to hurt.  Wonder what part he was reading?  Wait . . . arrow in butt more important.

Ionia:  I have heard that some reviewers can be trolls, but I didn’t realise they meant it so literally. I don’t know which part, but I’m thinking it must have had something to do with Kira. He had that dreamy look again . . . until the arrow in the butt.

Charles:  Unless he was reading ahead.  I should probably get Aedyn to help him that arrow.  Who shot him?

Ionia:  That makes me wonder. How would Windemere heroes handle a troll who drinks all the ale and then leaves 1 star?

Charles:  Such a terrible tipper.  I think Nyx would set them on fire.  Then she’d get mad.

Ionia:  In the Five Kingdoms we send them to the Murky Bog. Smells like farts and has swamp rats the size of a double-decker bus. Then we encourage them to try the mushrooms.

Charles:  Interesting.  For Windemere, it would depend on the hero.  Although, I can see the Lich being sent after them.  He’d have soooo much fun.

Ionia:  I have to hand it to Luke though. He kept his cool. He looked around for a moment, finished the chapter and then went on his way. I watched the arrow bounce up and down until he faded into the distance. He didn’t even swear.  I heard him mutter something about, “Did you even read this butt before you let that arrow fly?” He may have said book.  It sounded like butt.

Charles:  Sounds like he was drinking while reading. Then again, he’s learning how to take bad news and let it roll off his back.

Ionia:  Only to get himself through the parts with the Lich, surely.

Charles:  Or that demon.  Still a great scene that he will never live down.

Ionia:  I have heard that having cosmic-sized meltdowns in front of an audience can be bad. Hey, do you think he ever got the arrow out?  Ah, the demon. Yes. Well, perhaps the demon had an arrow in his butt too.

Charles:  If he didn’t then I have a list of people that would yank it out when he wasn’t looking.  Most likely Nimby.

Ionia:  I was thinking Fizzle might distract him with an apple.

Charles:  It’s a large butt.  Would the demon ever notice it?

Ionia:  He has the cute factor.

Fizzle:  Fizzle no know how to share apples!

Ionia:  Fizzle, not the demon arse.  Hey Fizzle! You always seem to show up when we talk about you.

Charles:  I wouldn’t say that out loud to the demon.  He’s sensitive about his backside.

Ionia:  *What do you mean apple perfume?  A demon with a complex about his arse? I like big butts. Look at my header.

Charles:  It’s an excellent header.  Love the red dress and cupcake.

Ionia:  Hey Charles, uhm…you might want to look behind you, I just saw movement behind one of those…ZING!!!!!!!!!!!

Charles:  Dang it!  I needed that cheek.

Ionia:  Hey Fizzle?

Charles:  Who keeps shooting at me?

Ionia:  There’s an arrow in Charles’ butt.

Fizzle:  Fizzle here!  Fizzle think that look painful.

Charles:  At least it isn’t in the bone.  Just the butt flesh.

Ionia:  Uhm…Bradley….we saw that. Nine out of Ten he’s going to try and blame the Lich.

Charles:  I wondered where he wandered off to.  Which Lich would he blame?

Ionia:  His or yours? Oh, that reminds me…pretty soon there is going to be another Lich released on the world. Have you heard about this?

Charles:  This is news to me.  I’m all ears and wounded rump.

Ionia:  Your bum is swelling. Here, take one of these…”Perfectly safe mushrooms” and have a rest against that tree. You can find out more shortly about this other Lich by keeping an eye on http://greenembers.wordpress.com

Charles:  I’ve heard rumors of that Lich moving into the spotlight.  Guess he got tired of the lonely shadows.

Ionia:  Until then, we should really do something about that butt… You are looking a bit like J-Lo and it’s wiggling like Jell-o

Charles:  That would be shivers of pain.  I need more mushrooms.

Ionia:  🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄  You owe me twenty Rubilets—is there a currency exchange around here?

Charles:  Behind the tavern and next to the other tavern.

Ionia:  but that says “outhouse”

Charles:  I have a few diamond spheres though.  It does say that.  That tavern owner isn’t great at making names . . . or cooking.

Ionia:  I’m out of here. Digger was left alone. It can’t be good.

Charles:  Yeah that . . . where’s Fritz and Nimby?  I think Sari wandered off too.  Maybe we should just hide under the bed until they all calm down.

Ionia:  No one else wants an arrow in their butt. Let’s. No one accused us of being heroes.

Charles:  Ladies first.

Ionia:  Be careful not to snag your arse on the duvet. Okay, then go first.

Charles:  I promise not to . . . what’s a duvet?

Ionia:  B L A N K E T!  D U H!

Charles:  Oh!  You meant my night fort. It’s warm and safe under there.

Ionia:  We all know you night fart. Now stop talking.

Charles:  Yes, ma’am.

Ionia:  Stop wriggling, I’ve almost got it out.

Charles:  Just yank it out and get it over with.  Keep the arrow though because I want to return to sender.

Ionia:  Oops, broke off the tip.  You are right. Call Aedyn.

Charles:  Good idea.  Keep Fritz and his inventions away from me.

Ionia:  You know you came to the right place if you want me to entertain a short guy. Well, good luck.

Charles:  Thanks.  Enjoy the gnome.

Ionia:  “OOOOH FRITZ!” * Bats eyelashes. “Charles had an arrow in his butt and now I broke his arse and he said he wants us to invent something to help him see the future…. Why thank you, I rather like this tunic as well…”

Excerpt: The Mercenary Queen Returns

By Kayla Matt

Selenia is quiet as she thinks about what is heading toward her students. She slowly unsheathes her longsword and coldly stares at its flawless shine. Kevin nods without her having to say a word and makes his way to the south wall. Duggan is already yelling orders to the students as Selenia climbs the stairs to the top of the wall.

“About time you showed up, Selenia. It looks like your old friend remembers you fondly,” Duggan mentions, casually pointing his gauntleted hand toward Visindor. “I did the best I could with the weapons. Being rushed doesn’t help a smithy make a stockpile of any kind. Now, we can only pray that the Holy One is smiling on my work because we are going to need it.”

Selenia looks out over the killing field to see a swarm of dark crimson flowing through the forest from the direction of the Caster Swamp. The red figures resemble hairless, muscular humans until one dares to look below their waist. The students shy away from the wall as they see the horrid body of a scorpion with curved barbs along its skin and a seven-foot, stinger-tipped tail curled behind them. Two giant pincers jut out from the monsters’ waists, snapping at anything that comes near. Occasionally, one of the smaller spadix gets too close to one of its bigger brethren and gets viciously snapped in two by a pincer.

“Those spadix get uglier every time I see them,” Duggan mutters. Selenia forces a smile as she notices larger figures pushing their way to the killing field. Standing over twenty-five feet tall, the ten cyclopes begin their thundering advance. Another cyclops stands in the back and Selenia can see that it is much bigger than the others.

“Damn Kevin and his vision sword. That’s more than one cyclops and the one in the back looks to be almost forty feet tall. I’ve met giants smaller than him. That Lich must have magically altered that bastard,” she angrily says as the monster army swarms into the killing field. “Well, I’m not one to wait for our guests to knock on the door, Duggan. Let’s be the ones to kick off this battle. Everyone prepare for battle! Archers and catapults! Prepare to fire on the northern side! Wait for my signal!”

Selenia raises her longsword above her head and it begins to crackle with magical electricity. Duggan has his crab-shell shield aimed at the monster army and nods to Selenia after a quick prayer. He concentrates on the shield, causing a jet of water to erupt from the front of the magical item. Selenia quickly lowers her sword to release a screeching lightning bolt along the water blast. It strikes one of the cyclopes in the face and the monster collapses in a twitching, burning heap on top of several of the spadix.

The moment the dead cyclops strikes the ground, the archers and catapults begin firing into the oncoming army. At first, the barrage manages to keep the shrieking monsters at bay. Three more cyclopes are killed before many of the spadix begin pulling out longbows and fire barbed arrows over the wall. One of the cyclopes hurls a tree into the academy, crushing two of the catapults along with five students. Selenia looks down at the bodies before stepping onto the edge of the wall and dropping into the killing field. She is a whirlwind of polished steel as soon as she lands in front of the startled spadix horde. Limbs, heads, and stingers fly everywhere as she cuts a path through her swarming enemies.

“Now this is my kind of strategy!” Duggan shouts.

The dwarf leaps from the wall, his armored body landing with a crash on top of a spadix. He can feel the monster’s body crumple and gush underneath his feet. With an echoing roar, Duggan begins knocking monsters away with his warhammer. He barely notices the squads led by Thomas and Kevin as they come around the corners to intercept the monsters that are within a few feet of the wall. The two forces meet with a terrifying clash of battle and screams that are both human and bestial.

The forty-foot cyclops finally gets to the battlefield and charges at Selenia, waving a massive club. She gets her sword up quickly, but she is still knocked over the academy wall by the monster. The half-elven warrior grabs the edge of the wall and does a mid-air flip to land on the walkway. From above the action, she can see her students being skewered by tail stingers or shredded by snapping pincers. Another cyclops is killed by a boulder that gets embedded in its chest and the dying behemoth starts to pitch forward. Selenia watches a group of archers leap out of the way as the body smashes into the wall, creating a gaping hole that becomes the new target of the spadix.

“Everybody fall back into the academy! Use your knowledge of the area to your advantage!” Selenia shouts as she drops from the walkway. She darts past a group of axe fighters and dives into the sea of monsters. They continually try to stab her with their stingers, but they end up hitting each other if they manage to hit anything at all. Selenia gracefully moves among them as she slashes through bodies, enjoying the feel of their crude swords harmlessly bouncing off her body. Every unnatural weapon is deflected by an invisible coating of magic until one of the stinger tails pierces her leg.

“Son of a bitch!” she screams, yanking the stinger out and jamming it into the face of another spadix. She stumbles back and immediately starts to feel faint. It isn’t long before she can feel her blood boiling, but a sudden pain in her side quickly clears the poison’s effects. Kevin and Duggan are immediately flanking her, giving her time to recover. Duggan happily bashes the surrounding spadix into the ground while Kevin stands his ground, swiftly attacking any that come near him. Even with his limited mobility, Kevin is impossible to hit as he expertly blocks and counterattacks the spadix.

“Did one of you do this?” she asks as she blocks a pincer and points at the fresh cut on her side. Both men shake their head and start to move away from her to clear away more of the monsters.

“More are coming!” shouts one of the archers from the wall.

All of the students are desperately fighting and struggling to keep their bearings. Selenia sees one of the dwarven students get stabbed in the shoulder by a stinger. The student lops off the tail with his axe and savagely cleaves the monster’s face in two. Selenia smiles with pride until the student begins to stumble from the poison in his body. She is about to run over to him when a curved blade on a chain flies into view, cuts him, and disappears into the crowd again. The steady wind changes, allowing Selenia to catch the brief scent of the magic anti-toxin they keep in the infirmary. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that the mystery weapon was covered in the potent liquid.

“Someone is using their head,” Selenia whispers as the next wave enters the academy. A cyclops approaches her, but it is swiftly killed by another thundering blast of lightning from her sword.

Women of Windemere: Selenia Hamilton Poetry

I Am Selenia Hamilton

I have earned this
By my own hand
Respect
Reputation
Influence
All mine by right
Not by gift

I walk anew
No longer warrior
But teacher and mentor
My honor is law
My charges my children
To protect and nurture
At every cost

I will keep them safe
This I swear
Upon my honor
My life has been lived
Their life has begun
Never again
Will I let a young one die

Warrior Child

Raised by the sword
Because magic
Was not her gift
Wildest of her generation
Untamed at birth
Getting into scrapes
Among the woodland beasts

On the day she left
Her family said good-bye
She shed her older form
To earn her fame
And be known by all
Sword held high
The Mercenary Queen ruled

A few weeks ago, Kayla Matt contacted me about drawing the female characters of Windemere.  She did an amazing job.  Today, I’m showcasing her drawings of Selenia Hamilton along with poems, videos, and an excerpt.

Selenia Hamilton is the hardened headmistress of Hamilton Military Academy.  She is tough, stern, and wondering why she hasn’t thrown Luke Callindor out of her academy.  Even though she is very strict, Selenia is a caring teacher who will protect her students like they are her own children.  Here is the ex-mercenary turned mentor:

Origins: Angel of Tears

Glacier

Glacier

The top of Windemere
Impenetrable ice crown
There since the beginning
Unchanged and unclimbable
Walls to slick for hands or gear
Those that fly
Will never find the top
And spells are eaten by the ice
Even the gods are blind
To what lurks upon the other side
They have long since forgotten
The mystery of the world
Leaving mortals to wonder
What the Ice Crown hides

This is the poem that I wrote today about this story idea.  Long ago, Angel of Tears was a stand-alone world that I came up with at an odd moment.  At a party that involved a strip club and this idea dawned on me while getting a lap-dance.  Some friends still think I miss the point of strip clubs because I think up ideas and hold conversations with the women.  If I’m giving away money then I want something more out of the deal.  Anyway, this idea is what came from it.

The concept was a simple one, I think.  There once was an angel who was the only being on a planet of mostly water.  She had the ability to look into other worlds and one day learned how to pull people into her world.  She grabbed people from every time period, world, and dimension that caught her interest.  One day, she found a world that intrigued her and she stepped through.  The angel lost her memory and became a mortal in our world while her world was cursed.  Every being turns into a half-demon under certain circumstances until she is returned.  At the age of 40, the change is permanent and they’re bestial, so they’re put on a heavily guarded island.

The overall story involved a group of ‘pirates’ led by a rather bumbling captain with a sword that can cut through to dimensions.  He wasn’t really bumbling, but I gave him terrible direction sense.  His crew consisted of a cowboy, magical paladin, caveman with smilodon, robot, Egyptian priestess, alien bounty hunter, and a sickly Apocalypse survivor.  They find the angel making money as a stripper because she wants to keep her apartment and eat.  Chasing them is a set of rival pirates and a Demon Queen that was created to stand in for the angel.  Obviously, the Demon Queen didn’t remove the curse and took over, but she wants the angel and the pirate captain for her harem.  I thought that was more interesting than a kill them or retain power motivation.

When I transferred the idea to Windemere, I needed a place to put it where the rest of the world wouldn’t get involved.  This is where the Ice Crown came from.  This ‘world’ is isolated and doesn’t realize it’s part of a bigger place.  Only on person has ever escaped, which is why there is a small samurai culture in one area.  I’m still wondering if I should ever have this area merge with the rest of the world.  I already have a lost continent doing that schtick.  Maybe have a hero go to it during the final battle of Windemere.

Another problem is that I can’t figure out what triggers the half-demon change.  I kept thinking rage, but that’s been done to death.  Maybe I can pick a deadly sin for each character that he or she can succumb to and change.  It’s really tough to figure out because I don’t want to the change to be fully controlled.  They have control when in the form, but they can’t control the change.  Otherwise, it isn’t much of a curse.
