W.I.P.- Brian Hunter

Character from Ragnarok

Character from Ragnarok

So, I did the restructuring and have those few ideas that are still clattering around.  I’m going to save the worst for this weekend.  The one I’m bringing up now revolves around another character from my high school years, Brian Hunter.

I got into James Bond and designed a spy.  His original adventures were ridiculously over the top and he had appearances in a lot of the Super Earth stories.  When I moved everything to Windemere, he came along and a lot of his stories fell away.  They were very high-tech based and required Earth locations, so I needed new plans for him.  Ironically, the title ‘Project Phoenix’ was the name of one of his books and revolved around the return of a deadly assassin who frames him.  Cloning was involved too.

A few issues have come up with Brian Hunter, the worst of which is that he was very gun-oriented.  Guns don’t go over well in fantasy and I know very little about them.  I considered a magic crossbow, but Sin does that.  Then, I decided to spend a week ‘researching’ guns in Windemere.  This is where the Piecekeepers came from.

The Piecekeepers are the secret organization that protects the stability of the governments of the Ralian continent.  They have been given guns due to an oath to Vawn Moran the Gnome God.  Each weapon is protected by spells.  Only the designated Piecekeeper can touch the weapon or it explodes.  I’m talking take at least a hand off.  The only way to touch a Piecekeeper’s weapon is if they’re holding it too.  Also, copying magic and other spells that can steal items cause it to teleport to the caster and explode.  This time it goes for the face.  The bullets are protected too.  If fired, they dissolve within a minute.  If tampered with they . . . explode.  Look, gnomes made these things and they dream of blowing stuff up.  The whole point here is that this guns (all Six Shooters) are highly controlled and defended.  Oh and the gods are able to take these away if they are abused to an extreme level or pose a threat.  Final note: rogue Piecekeepers are hunted down by their former allies and whatever mercenaries can be rounded up.  A certain hot-tempered caster has even gone after one of them and let’s just say it didn’t end well for the guy.

With that hurdle handled, I’m now left wondering about what kind of adventure to put Brian Hunter into.  I might keep his first one as the introductory and use the plot of investigating an old girlfriend dealing in illegal weapons.  After that, I’m not sure if I should make it a trilogy with a single plot or try to revamp some of his old stories to work in Windemere.  I had a cyberterrorist story, a ‘Moonraker’ type story (destroy all but the chosen people), someone hunting undercover agents, and a few others.  I guess I just wonder what this secret agent can really do in a world of magic and monster.

Ask A Character: Queen Ionia

The Simbul from D&D

The Simbul from D&D

I guess since I introduced her over the weekend, I should celebrate the return of ‘Ask a Character’ with Queen Ionia of Darkmill.

A simple recap of how this works:

  1. Ask anything you want of the character.  Spoilers will be avoided.
  2. Character will respond to your comment as quickly as possible.
  3. Have fun.

So, Queen Ionia is the ruler of Darkmill, which is a magical city created from the ruler.  This means that the city is born from Queen Ionia’s aura and will disappear when she passes away.  She is not the first ruler of Darkmill and that’s not even the original name of the city.  The ruling caster tends to change the name and the structure every time, so the citizens tend to not get very attached to street names and buildings.  For the most part, the rules keep things the same, but each one has his or her own twist.

Queen Ionia is close friends with Cyril and Willow of Gaia.  This means she has known Nyx since the latter was adopted at the age of two.  Ionia is like the fun aunt to Nyx because they share the habit of playing with their magic.  Most of Nyx’s tricks and pranks were taught to her by Queen Ionia, which Cyril is still not happy about.

So, ask away and see what you learn.  Just have fun and we’ll see how this return of a classic blog post goes.

Progress of the Day . . . Brain Ache Level 10

Before

This is a day’s work.  I think.  On the left is what I started with.  On the right is what I have now.  Progress?  Not sure.  I chopped it down from 40+ series to 33 series of varying lengths, but a lot of 1-3 book ideas.  Overall there’s only six ideas that are really eluding me.  Some worse than others.  Ever have that issue where you know the idea is rattling around in your skull, but you can’t snag it?

I did run the web a little thicker between some books and fed a few to Sin’s series because he has 2 books with no supporting cast.  I also discovered some series that work better together instead of apart.  Without a sounding board, I can’t do much else today.  And I mean someone with most of a day free to sit down and help me hash things out.  Not really an option here.  The toddler doesn’t understand and the wife . . . she tries and tends to short circuit.

Maybe I’ll toss the troublesome ones up as time goes on and see if anyone can help jog my think-y organ.  I think that list might be closer to 10 though.

What Do You Look For in Magical Beasts?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

One of the staples of the fantasy genre are the magical beasts from mythology and the recesses of the author’s imagination.  Yes, I’m aware that some people feel that such things are overused and no longer have a place in the genre.  In fact, I’ve gotten into that debate several times.  Seriously, how can someone say dragons are fine, but they get angry about unicorns, griffins, mermaids, and the rest of the menagerie?  I digress and now I will repress the anger.

Balrog from Street Fighter

Balrog from Street Fighter

Magical worlds are filled with unique creatures ranging from large versions of regular animals to off the wall critters.  Look at Middle Earth for this.  You have beasts that range from giant spiders to sentient trees to the terrifying Balrog (as seen to the right).  They roam the wilds and attack cities.  They appear to the pure of heart or obey the darkest of wills.  Most of them tend to be living in the ruins of ancient civilizations that were destroyed by the citizens’ own hubris.  The point here is that nearly every fantasy series has at least one creature that is not from the real world.

The challenge with including such beasts is the ‘HOW’.  The Hobbit (book!) had Smaug the dragon as the main enemy and other creatures were smaller obstacles.  This is before the time where people got bored with the adventure tale.  This type of story allows for the unique flora and fauna of a world to be displayed at relatively random intervals.  D&D and video games would call these random encounters because they were typically not main plot essential.  They were more for character evolution and world building.  For example, the Hobbit would have gone the same without the giant spiders of Mirkwood, but Bilbo Baggins found his courage and Sting’s power there.  Also, any creature could have been used for the effect, which seems to be another sign of how beasts are used.

Most of the new fantasy that I’ve read doesn’t touch on magical creatures unless the story focuses on them.  Bears and wolves have taken the place of ogres and pegasi. Yet, dragons still show up and you see magical beasts on emblems.  I’m not sure if this is a push to make fantasy more realistic or it’s just part of a cycle where the focus is more on human enemies than monsters.  Personally, I like a balance, but I will admit that it’s difficult to put a monster into a story without it feeling like a random encounter or a dungeon crawl.  The Compass Key has tons of battles against unique creatures, so I do worry about this.  The first act has the heroes wandering a swamp, the second act involves a lost tomb for a chapter, and the third act is in a place I can’t talk about.  Monsters are everywhere in these relatively untouched regions of Windemere, so it makes sense to me that they would be there.  To a reader though, it might not be seen that way.  Yes, I know the adage ‘you can’t please everyone’.

So, what do people think of the use of magical beasts in literature?  Are the days of anything that isn’t a dragon over?  Seriously, why do dragons get a pass when they’re the most overdone critter?  People get angry over a hobgoblin being used, but swoon over another red dragon.  I just don’t get it.

Restructuring Day

Homer Simpson- The Man, The Myth, The Cartoon

Homer Simpson- The Man, The Myth, The Cartoon

Well, I learned one thing this morning.  A guy who has a mild case of arachnophobia and is half-asleep should not look up ‘WEBS’ on a yahoo image search.  There are some majorly nasty looking spiders out there.  What demented deity would create something with freaky eyes, 8 legs, hair, venom, and just all around yuck?  The eyes are the worst because their soulless and creepy like *insert celebrity of choice*.

On to what I really wanted to talk about . . . uh . . . I think it was the restructuring, which I’ve mentioned before.  That sounds right.

I have about 40 series and one-shot books in various stages of planning.  The reason is because while trying to publish Beginning of a Hero the traditional way, I spent my free time bounding after every creative idea that appeared.  Like a ball-chasing dog in a tennis ball factory, I went wild.  This became difficult to keep up because I had different worlds and things would get mixed up.  Clyde showed up in Windemere when he shouldn’t, Sin popped into Super Earth, and all sorts of illegal cameos.  So, I took time last year to integrate everything into Windemere.  Sealed up a lot of plot issues and brought some twists to a few iffy series.

One thing I didn’t do was see if every idea was viable or if some could be merged.  Project Phoenix is a big umbrella without a real plot, so it can absorb a few.  Some ideas are rather stagnant and others might be smaller than they originally appeared.  For example, Gearhead Princess was a character originally in Project Phoenix who I gave a series too because I liked her.  Switch over and her series is revealed to not make much sense.  So, she’s going back into Project Phoenix.  You’ll find that this is going to be common.

So, today will be dedicated to fixing this.  I once to bounce these ideas off a friend in emails, but he’s busy and this is like rebuilding a car engine.  So, I’m going to have to do this alone and praying I figure stuff out.

Final note: I will admit that part of this restructuring is due to a sense of my own mortality.  Sounds weird, but I want to publish or write or outline all of my ideas before I go.  I’m 33 and my plan was to get published by 25.  This is childish thinking, but I do fear I’ll leave without all of my characters getting a chance at existence.  So, I need to see if I can find homes for all of them.  I’ve already lost a lot over the years and I sense there are going to be some that disappear in this run.  Unless . . . there are two Sin books that are lacking new characters.  I think the Mappers and the feuding sorceress sisters might have found a home.

Editing Accomplished!

It is done!  The editing of the books is done for now.  That means a week of relaxing and other low key projects.  First on the list-

The Restructuring . . . kind of wish I had a human sounding board for this one.  It’s low key, but will be the equivalent of examining every individual thread of a tapestry.  What can be merged?  What can be dropped?  What connects to what?  It should be a fun project for the day.

Plan for the Week- Hopefully Relaxation

Capybara

Capybara

So, I’m hoping to relax this week since I finished typing in the edits to Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune.  By relaxing, I mean focusing on projects that don’t require full focus and aren’t time sensitive.  I’m hoping for a week of this.  I’ll still be on the blog and doing the promotional stuff though.  Only I’ll be doing it with the television on and still under the covers.  Or sprawled on the couch with my notebooks around me.

Here’s the plan:

  1. Finish editing Beginning of a Hero and upload new version to Amazon.
  2. Work on characters and plots for The Slumber War.
  3. Restructuring the ideas.
  4. If those two are done then begin characters, plots, and events for War of the Tainted.
  5. Drink a little.
  6. Tuesday with toddler in park and frozen yogurt.
  7. Promo books.

I do have one question that I’ve been struggling with:

Which character do I use for the return of Ask A Character on Tuesday?

I Speak of Trade, Fellow Authors!

So, I called for volunteers to help with a December blog tour for my upcoming release, Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies.  Another idea came to me in regards to this to make it more worth your while.

I will be doing daily ‘Check out these Blogs’ on the days that people are going to be posting.  If you are an indie author with a Published Book then tell me the book titles and I will include it in the Daily.  So you get a little advertising out of this too during a month where every little bit helps.  If you have something else you want me to promote such as an event (Read Tuesday) or an art commission page then let me know.

Thanks.
