Now, I can hear people saying ‘How do we ask questions to characters if we never read your books?’  First, I frown and wonder why you haven’t read the books.  Then, accepting that people are busy, I put a list of characters with brief descriptions after this sentence:

Luke Callindor–  The young hero of the story who has set out to prove he is as much a hero as his ancestors.  Armed with twin sabers and courage, this half-elf repeatedly finds himself in over his head.

Nyx– The hot-tempered, but kind sorceress that Luke befriends in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  With the ability to cast spells with incantations and gestures, Nyx is incredibly powerful.  She also calls Luke her little brother.

Sari– Debuting in Allure of the Gypsies, Sari is the only surviving gypsy of her clan who were massacred by the Lich.  Whether on the run or contained, she is a cunning woman that one has to always be wary of.  Otherwise, you might find yourself no longer in control of the situation.

Fizzle– A purple-scaled Drite with red dragonfly wings, who guards Visindor Forest. He joins with Luke after taking a liking to the forest tracker.  This tiny dragon has become an important ally to our heroes and an adorable mascot.

Nimby–  The halfling thief who befriended Luke in Hamilton Military Academy and helped him locate the hidden heir of Serab.  Nimby has proven his loyalty several times, but he is a man of many secrets.  Just be careful talking to him because he rarely shuts up.

Fritz Warrenberg– The womanizing, gnomish inventor is the oldest of our heroes, but is not always the most mature.  Armed with a sharp mind that can work on multiple problems at once, he should never be underestimated.  Let’s not forget his loyal riding sheep, Bessaria.

Aedyn Karwyn– The stoic and serious half-elven priest of the Sun God, Durag, is the healer of the time.  Though, he tends to feel like the babysitter with Nimby’s stealing, Fritz’s flirting, and Luke’s reckless behavior.

The Lich–  A dark and sinister villain from the Caster Swamp, this undead spellcaster has been after Luke from the beginning.  His ultimate goals are still unknown, but it seems he has a master.

The Hellfire Elf– The demonic assassin that the Lich summons to capture the heir of Serab and kill Luke Callindor.  He has been given the deadly Chaoswind Blade, which causes extreme pain to those of good natures.  With his shape-shifting ability and demonic strength, Luke is still afraid of this menace.

Queen Trinity–  She is the ruler of the chaos elves and her magic rivals that of Nyx, making them perfect enemies.  More laid back and calm than the Lich, she is always up for a challenge or looking into a mystery.  Hints of a deeper reason for her allegiance to the evil forces of Windemere have begun appearing as well.

Kira Grasdon–  Heir to the Grasdon Merchant Company, Luke runs into her at Hamilton Military Academy.  Eventually, winning our young hero over, she is out to master her own chain and sickle weapon.  A master of changing her mood and behavior to suit any situation, she can come off as two-faced.

Kellia– The school bully that becomes a good friend of Luke and the others.  She still has issues with Fritz hitting on her.

Selenia Hamilton–  The half-elven headmistress of Hamilton Military Academy, this former mercenary dealt with Luke during his first mission.  She’s still angry that he arrived at her school under false papers, but she’s willing to take her fury out on him with detention.

Kevin Masterson– The administrative head of Hamilton Military Academy. This grizzled, crotchety warrior sports a bum leg and shoulder after losing a fight to three ogres.  To be fair, they’re dead and he’s still around to curse at annoying students.

Daniel Skyblade– This noble from the city of Gaia is a former employee of Selenia.  A legend among warriors, he takes great interest in the unfolding events.

Captain Higgs– The sea elf captain of The River Scout, who has the task of escorting the heir of Serab’s entourage down the L’dandrin River.  Very protective of his crew, he is quick to yell at any of his guests if they get in the way.

Cyril & Willow– The masters of Rainbow Tower and Nyx’s adoptive parents.  Cyril is a dark, stern man while his wife is a smiling, happy woman.  Polar opposites that eternally get along.

Isaiah– A powerful Fireskin (dragon man) and the mysterious caster that rescued Nyx from her burning village.  He has already hinted that he knows about the prophecy that Nyx and Luke are involved in.  His only goal is to keep them alive long enough to see their destiny to the end.

Kalam– The vampiric brother of Isaiah, he is the former mentor of the Lich.  He has agreed to help his old student attack Luke and friends in return for a chance to battle his elusive brother.  He also takes Sari as payment, which might be more than he bargained for.

Talos ‘Doubleblade’ Callindor– The grandfather of Luke and his teacher in the ways of combat and the forest.  He gets his special name from his mastery of the Whirlwind of Uli style, which Luke uses as well.  This old elf is retired and spends his days relaxing in the town of Haven.

Vixen & Ilan Callindor–  Luke’s parents.  Ilan is an elven blacksmith with a bad leg from his adventuring days and he hates that he son has left to be an adventurer.  Vixen is a jewel maker and has spent far too much of her time apologizing for the trouble her son causes.

Gabriel– The God of Destiny and Lord of Hell.  Controlling the fates of the evil and the good, he is the most powerful god in the Windemere pantheon.

Zaria–  The Goddess of Purity and Gabriel’s ally/rival.  Kind and compassionate, she acts as an opposite force to Gabriel’s demeanor.

Uli–  The Goddess of Elven Warriors and the Forest.  She is the patron goddess of Luke and is exceptionally worried about him being under Gabriel’s hands.

“May I interject?” asks a naked woman. She lets go of Vile and shakes his sweat from her palm. Her bare skin is a chaotic swirl of black and white. Her light green hair is pleated and runs down to her knees.

“Feel free, Yola Biggs. It is not my place to deny the Goddess of Chaos,” Vile replies. He shakes his hand, which has gone numb from the woman’s cold touch.

“I must be brief,” Yola whispers, scanning the carnage around them. “The other gods might find me and take me to be sealed. The punishment for breaking the law of influence is harsh. So, I must be brief.” She stands and smiles before the halfling, who waits for her to continue speaking.

“And?” he finally inquires.

“And what?”

“Why will you not let me kill the boy?”

“I already told you.”

“You said you would have to be brief.”

“I was brief.”

“My apologies, Queen of Chaos,” Vile says in mock politeness. “Your . . . beauty distracted me. Could you please explain it to me again?”

“Well, I do have that effect on you,” Yola claims with a flirty flip of her hair. “You must not kill this boy. He is very skilled for a mortal of his age, which is why our master believes he is one of the chosen champions. We must take this boy alive and study him. To this end, I have been sent to escort the captive back to our master.”

“I see. Then, he is all yours,” agrees Vile, sheathing his blade. “Do I have any other orders?”

“You are to remain here in the area and continue killing the gypsies until all of them are dead. We have taken all that we need from these nomads, but we do not want them interfering with our plans,” Yola replies, easily hoisting Kayn over her shoulder. “Nyder and the others will be arriving in an hour to discuss our next set of actions against the Callindor and Nyx. Those two weigh heavily on our master’s mind.”

“I understand,” Vile says with a firm salute.

Yola beams a sweet and sour smile at Vile. The halfling blinks and the goddess is gone without a trace. He takes a deep breath and pulls out a glowing sling as he wanders toward the delicious screams of the dying gypsies.

Allure of the Gypsies: Massacre Part 2

Part 2 of the Opening Scene of Allure of the Gypsies:

“Halfling fiend! Call off your monsters!” demands the gypsy.

The halfling eyes the gypsy as one would look at a yelping puppy. “Who might you be, boy?”

Kayn grits his teeth and stares proudly at his enemy. “I am the champion of this clan. We have done nothing to you. I demand that you leave us alone.”

“Well now, the champion stands before me,” the halfling says, amused by the youth. “Honor forces me to introduce myself to my opponent. I am General Vile and I am afraid I cannot leave.”

“Then, I will have to kill you,” Kayn growls.

Vile lets his grin fade into a stern expression. “Correction. You will have to try to kill me. I am an old and seasoned halfling, boy. A whelp of a gypsy like you could not handle my abilities.”

“You will have to kill me to get to the rest of the clan,” the young gypsy announces. He dashes at the halfling with amazing speed, but a metallic blur blocks the slash of his cutlass. Kayn steps back to see that the halfling’s shortsword is still sheathed at his side, the only sign of the enemy’s movement is a footprint of matted grass.

“Care to try again? I will go slower this time,” promises the halfling.

Kayn juggles his sword from one hand to the other. “You mock me.”

“I merely want to extend my entertainment. I get very few challenges at my age,” Vile admits with a sigh. “Now, please attack me again. Try to make your moves faster and less predictable.”

Kayn quickly slashes at Vile’s stomach, but an armored gauntlet effortlessly deflects the cutlass with an echoing ping. The gypsy uses every maneuver he can imagine against the halfling, but all of his attacks are blocked. The wind changes and he can hear the dying screams from the camp while the halfling continues to toy with him. The wails from his people help to fuel Kayn’s rage as he attempts a final attack on Vile. Kayn presses the dull edge of his cutlass against his forearm. The gypsy roars before he makes a running slash at his opponent with as much strength as he can muster. Flicking his wrist at the last second, Kayn flips the curved edge of the cutlass toward Vile’s throat.

“Impressive,” states the halfling, ducking under the attack and rolling between Kayn’s legs. The gypsy drops his weapon in defeat when he feels the tip of Vile’s shortsword against his back.

“Go ahead and kill me. I have failed to protect my clan,” Kayn announces, his tired arms hanging at his side.

“You fought better than I had expected. Be thankful that you die with honor,” Vile says with a soft voice. A searing pain in the halfling’s shoulder stops him from executing the gypsy. Vile and Kayn turn to see a gypsy girl with flowing, dark blue hair standing at the edge of the clearing. Breathing heavy and looking scared, she stands ready to throw another knife at Vile.

“Sari! Run!” Kayn screams as he tackles the soldier. An armored fist knocks the young man to the ground. A shuddering breath is the only sign that Kayn is still alive as a bleeding bump grows on his forehead.

“Very stupid, boy,” grunts the halfling. “You may have saved that girl, but you should have been more concerned with your own hide.” He lifts his sword to stab Kayn in the head when a delicate, icy hand grips his wrist.

Allure of the Gypsies: Massacre Part 1

Part 1 of the Opening Scene of Allure of the Gypsies:

Dawn has barely emerged when the deadly Weapon Dragons swoop from the sky and wake the gypsy caravan with their steely roars. The smoky, metallic hides of these beasts drip fresh dew upon their prey as they attack. Gusts of wind from their immense wings flip over wagons and smash tents against the trees as the two dragons circle the caravan. The monsters wait for panic to set in before landing and lazily slaughtering the gypsies with their mouths and claws. Within minutes, the gypsy wagons are nothing more than shattered wreckage. Bodies of small children and the elderly, who were hiding inside the wagons, are scattered across the devastation. The warriors of the caravan are beginning to organize when a quake passes through the battlefield. Women scream as zombies rise from the moist earth. The undead horde shambles toward those who were lucky enough to escape the dragons. Over half of the gypsies are dead before the sun finishes pulling free of the horizon.

“Sari!” shouts a young gypsy, running amid the chaos. A blood-soaked cutlass is in his hand, which he uses to cut his way through the zombies.

“Kayn! What are you doing?” an older man asks. The man is using a crude spear to fend off a pack of zombies. Kayn rushes to his aid and beheads the zombies with quick slashes of his cutlass.

“I am sorry, elder, but I am looking for my partner,” Kayn admits. His green eyes constantly scan the area from beneath his mop of brown hair. “She was with me when the attacks began, but I lost her in the crowd.”

“I have not seen her, but you should not worry. Sari can take care of herself and you have a greater responsibility,” says the elder with a dry cough. “You are our greatest warrior, Kayn. Please remember that there are those in our clan who cannot defend themselves. Sari would understand if you chose to protect the entire clan instead of her alone.”

A deafening roar erupts from a woody outcropping before the razor-edged wings of an Axe Dragon cuts the trees down. The bulky beast of metal and wood rampages, spewing a cluster of spinning blades from its mouth. The blades roll along the ground and chop up everyone in their path before they disappear into the woods.

“I understand, elder. Please give me your spear,” Kayn requests. The young man swiftly hurls the simple weapon toward the lumbering dragon. The spear strikes and pierces a piece of amber in the dragon’s head, causing the monster to stop in mid-thrash and crash to the ground.

“These false dragons are nothing if you know how to defeat them,” the smiling elder laughs.

“Again, I give you my deepest apologies, elder. I forgot my place and clan during this chaos,” Kayn whispers, placing a hand on the old man’s shoulder.

“You are forgiven,” the elder says with warmth in his eyes. “I forget that you are still a youth because of all the hard times you have seen us through. I trust that you can see us through this one.”

“I will find those who lead these monsters,” Kayn swears. “May you live to dance another night.”

Kayn turns away from the elder and sprints toward the sound of the second dragon. A few zombies feebly attempt to stop him, but they are quickly cut down as the gypsy rushes past them. Kayn keeps an eye out for his missing partner among the dead. Every second that passes without seeing any sign of her drives him mad with anger and desperation. He is barely able to control his rage by the time he reaches the clearing where a short figure in mottled chainmail yells at the narrow-bodied Sword Dragon. Kayn hisses a sigh of relief through his gritted teeth when the gold-winged beast rises into the air and leaves the field of battle.

“You can fight me now,” the grinning soldier announces. He turns in Kayn’s direction with a wicked gleam in his brown eyes.

Away Day

So, I’m going to away from the laptop and only working by phone if I happen to find a Wifi connection.  More likely, I’ll only be Tweeting and responding to blog comments.  I’m going to get a day of rest before the chaos of the weekend.  Though, the Hype Week hasn’t been that exciting.  The interviews kind of bombed and not much else caught attention.  Today is the first section of Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies throughout the day and excerpts rarely go over well.

Twubs Chat on Saturday 8 PM, November 30th!  Ask any character a question that is on your mind.  Instructions on how to get to the Chat and a long list of characters will be posted tomorrow.

Brief History of the Callindors

Black Family Tree from Harry Potter

Black Family Tree from Harry Potter

Ever since the first book of Legends of Windemere, the Callindor name has been mentioned as legendary.  Unfortunately, readers have only had Luke to go by on the prowess of the family, which isn’t the greatest advertisement.  So, this is going to be a little history lesson of this heroic bloodline.

The ‘first’ of the heroic line was Gavin Callindor, an elf who was chosen by the gods to defeat an evil warlord.  He journeyed with other heroes and rumor has it he was close friends with Gabriel prior to the latter ascending to be the new God of Destiny.  Gavin was the only hero to survive the final battle after the warlord gained the power of a god and threatened everything. The reward for destroying the warlord was fame and the blessing of the gods for his descendents.

Many monsters and enemies of the gods fell to the Callindors.  The only period where the name fell into the shadows was for a century after the Great Cataclysm.  Windemere had physically changed within minutes, causing many towns and species to be destroyed in the shifting Earth.  At the time, the Callindor family was composed of 70 members. Nobody knew where the family had gone and there were no stories of any of them until a young man arrived out of the Cerascent Islands with the surname.  His story was that the family manor had fallen into a chasm, half of the family dying in the tragedy.  Others died trying to stop areas from falling into chaos, but there were a few who were hiding to take stock of the situation.  It took many casters a year to prove he was a surviving Callindor.  Once everything was sorted out, the famous family was back.

Over the years, many other Callindors have risen to fame and enhanced the family reputation. Most of them have been elf, half-elf, and human after the various forks in the family line.  There have also been some who failed miserably to remind people that they’re still mortal.  Some of the noted ones:

Marsis Callindor– A towering warrior who was chosen to defeat the invading Ursines, who were unleashed by an insane caster.  He succeeded and lived out the last of his days helping the surviving beasts acclimate to an island.

Haylee Callindor–  This mousy woman was not a warrior, but an alchemist.  She cured many diseases with her knowledge.  Her final gift to the world was the mixture for a cure all potion that takes a decade to brew one dose.  Many temples keep a draft of this potion on hand in case of emergencies.

Lovo Callindor–  Destined to face a Named One, this member of the family is not looked at very fondly.  He fought the demon with very little preparation and no magical gear.  He died during the battle and half a village burned down.

Alversys Callindor– For years, he was the black sheep of his generation and became a bandit.  People believed he would be one of the few failures of the family until the Callindors were attacked and captured by several strong enemies.  Alversys was the only one left free and he set out to free the others.  He survived the great battle, but lost his arms.  Retiring, he returned to the family estate and founded the village of Haven.

Today, there are only a handful of Callindors left and Luke is the only one of his generation.  Most of his father’s generation have either died in battle or refused to have children.  So, Luke could very well be the last of the Callindors if he dies during his adventures.  Something he has yet to think about.

Character Interview: Vixen Callindor

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Within the pages of Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies, you get to meet the Callindor family.  It wasn’t easy to choose who to pull for this interview.  Talos Callindor is a legend and trained his grandson Luke to be a warrior.  His wife, Magella Callindor, is a powerful caster, but she stays out of the fighting and is rather enigmatic. Ilan Callindor would be a fun interview since he is entirely against his son’s decision to runaway from home and become an adventurer.  He would prefer Luke followed in his footsteps and became a blacksmith. All good choices, but one is more entertaining than the others.

Vixen Callindor married Ilan Callindor after his adventuring party had a disastrous adventure. Many of his friends died and he took solace in Vixen’s arms.  Ilan retired, they married, and Luke Callindor was born.  So, if you’re going to get any juicy stories about our young hero, it’s best to ask his mother.

While not a Callindor by blood, Vixen is an expert jewelry maker and gem-worker.  She is responsible for embedding jewels in Ilan’s works.  A very calm and polite person, she has never been a warrior.  A loving mother and wife, she can be stern with her husband and son.  Though, she tends to spend more time apologizing for Luke than keeping him in line.  Vixen gets her revenge by freely sharing embarrassing stories of our young hero.

So, step on up and ask her whatever you want.  Learn about the city of Haven, stories about Luke’s childhood, or her thoughts on anything.

The Callindor Bloodline

The Incredibles by Pixar

The Incredibles by Pixar

Legacy of heroism
Dating back before the change
When the first one set off
To face the darkest foe
Beginning the bloodline
Where great ones rise from birth

Not every one has won
Many fail and fall
Crushed beneath the legacy
Their ancestors forged in pain
Shedding blood and tears
To be blessed by all the gods

Some have called them cursed
Stricken with a wanderlust
Urging them to roam
In search of challenges and death
Never knowing
If they are the next to rise or fall

Do not weep for the Callindor line
Or believe them to be blessed
Each one marked
Hated by those with evil hearts
Who wish to wipe them out
And end a legacy of legends
