Homer Simpson (Also Giants and Jets)
First, I should be honest that I’ve been drinking tonight. I’m also home, watching the game, and not going anywhere. Except to bed when this is over. I’m typing this up during commercials. That way I can still watch the game and can uncross my fingers.
This actually has nothing to do with NY Giants specifically. This has to do with a question that I was asked:
“How can you be a fan of the Giants when they’re losing?”
This was asked by someone who doesn’t like sports. In fact, they love to mock those who enjoy sports. I answered with a long explanation though. My dad has been a Giants fan since the 50’s. I was never that into football as a kid since I thought it was Dad’s Time. I watched it sometimes, but never really got into the meat of the game. I knew the basics and enjoyed the fun of watching with people (SWEET PASS TO RANDLE!). There was an atmosphere about it that I grew up with and it became focused on Giants specifically. I guess I liked how they weren’t always dominating and there was a sense that they were always trying their best. At least from my perspective. This was a team that kept fans on their toes and that always brought a sense of excitement to the game for me. Yet, I was only a casual watcher depending on what I was doing and the mood of my dad. Then I moved to Florida and realized I missed watching Giants games. I got my fix when they went against the Patriots for the Superbowl in 2007. It was then that I realized how much I missed them and there was something that I took from their games that I didn’t get with the Florida teams. Anyway, that’s a drunken ramble. Time for a distraction:

The Lich by Jason Pedersen
What? Nobody said it had to be football related.
Back on track, I get really annoyed by people who are behind a team and then abandon them when they start to lose. That’s not loyalty and it’s frustrating because it means these people will turn on (GO, DONNELL!) those they were cheering alongside. I know I might be overreacting, but that does irk me. This is why I respect anyone that remains a fan of a losing team. So, how does this relate to non-sports?
Well, the person who asked the question is a massive Firefly fan. So, I pointed out that the show was butchered and cancelled before their season even finished. 3 episodes weren’t even aired. Yet, the people who fell in love with the show have remained loyal all of these years later. It’s been 12 years since it aired and it has one of the most potent fanbases I’ve ever seen. That’s dedication akin to those that keep cheering for a team that’s losing a game or having a terrible season. This is why I can’t figure out why fans of such things are so confused by sports fans. Is it really that hard to understand somebody being into something so much when you’re the same way with something else?
Yeah. I think the beer derailed me near the end. I guess my point is that everyone is a fan of something through thick and thin, so why mock someone for being the same about something you’re simply not into?
