What do you do when you realize nothing in your life is what you’ve believed it to be?

When Arionna Jacobs loses her mother in a tragic accident, her world is turned upside down. She’s forced to leave her old life behind and move in with her father. Dace Matthews, a teaching assistant at her new college, is torn in two, unable to communicate with the feral wolf caged inside him.

When they meet, everything they thought they knew about life unravels. Dace has intimate access to Arionna’s mind, and something deep within her fights to rise to the surface. They don’t understand what’s happening to them or why, and they’re running out of time to sort out the strange occurrences around them.

Their meeting sets an ancient Norse prophesy of destruction in motion, and what destiny has in store for them is bigger than either could have ever imagined. Unless they learn to trust themselves and one another, they may never resolve the mystery surrounding who they are to one another, and what that means for the world.

You Know It’s Really Hard to Make Goal-Based Puns for So Long!

I’m curious how many people actually watch these videos I put on these posts.  They’re just something I like listening too, so they don’t always have anything to do with what I’m writing about.  I don’t know much about music, so it isn’t easy picking something that I haven’t used already.

Business side of things sees the books chugging along.  They’re not breaking any records, but they’re still going.  I’m hoping I can do more promo stuff next month, but schedule is really tight.  I’m doing the editing when I can, but I’m perpetually exhausted.  I’ve been watching a ton of Zero Punctuation videos on YouTube whenever I feel I need a laugh.  I can see that ‘business’ isn’t really a focus on this paragraph.  I’ll close up by saying the Thunderclap campaign is . . . whatever.  I might make a midweek and last day post about it, but I’m so frustrated and burnt out on the whole thing.  I tried and I learned a few things that I’ll write about in a special post next Sunday after the campaign is completed.

Speaking of next weekend . . . I’ll either be a ghost or an irritable beast next Saturday.  It isn’t anything people have done.  It’s Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of fasting.  That means the sun goes down on Friday and I can’t eat until the sun goes down on Saturday.  I will be trying to sleep and play video games for as long as I can to stave off hunger.  It doesn’t help that I’ve been minimizing my snacking the last few months, which has put me in a state of perpetual hunger.  My body thinks I’m starving it, but I’m simply not being a glutton and it’s rough.  I’ll be responding to blog comments and doing some stuff in the morning and night, but I’ll be in my corner during the worst of things.

In writing news, I’m chugging along with the minor edits and cursing that I’m stuck with my outlining projects.  Mostly because my mind won’t let the intergalactic bounty hunter alone.  I still can’t get this character into Windemere without feeling like I’m causing trouble, but the original story is science fiction and I don’t have the scientific knowledge or skill to do that.  I tried in test scenes, but I always treat things like magic.  There will be some ‘tech’ that appears throughout other series such as a magic-powered battle suit and giant robot and I’m working on figuring out how to let Clyde keep his blood-powered chainsaw.  These things work with gnome tech and within the rules that their series create for Windemere.  Yet the bounty hunter is a stranger to the world and functions outside of all the rules.  She’ll have a problem with limited ammo for her gauntlets and not being sure what’s a monster and what’s not.  That’s as far as I get.  I’ve toyed with the idea of her using the last of her power cells to send the criminals she’s capturing back to their jail, but it strands her.  That means she’s working without tech in the second book.  I’m ranting at this point and that’s not a good thing.  I just can’t be sure if I’m doing the right thing, but I refuse to abandon this character.

Goals of the week!

  1. Continue editing books.
  2. Prepare for day of hunger.
  3. Attend first Parent/teacher conference.  This will be interesting.
  4. Toy with Bounty Hunter idea when feeling masochistic.  Maybe put her into the ‘Mylrixians/Project Phoenix’ where the tech and superhumans appear after they’re awakened.
  5. Sleep, eat, and help son do homework.  Also stationary bike.
  6. Keep an eye on Thunderclap campaign and compose thoughts for final verdict post.

Duck Hunt from Nintendo Meme

Duck Hunt from Nintendo Meme

First let me just say that having images of reblogged posts added to one’s media list is a pain.  Finding ANYTHING from older posts is like an epic journey that seems to end when I’m just bored and pick something from whatever is in front of me.  For example, I was going for the close up shot of Nyx’s face from the Prodigy of Rainbow Tower cover.  I never made it and that’s not the point of this post.

I wanted to promote two things of mine that could use some support.  First is the Thunderclap campaign . . . I know this is getting ridiculous.  I’m at 74 of 100 with 7 days to go.  I’m sick of promoting this too since it seems to get a lot of shares, retweets, and reblogs and very few volunteers.  I’m trying hard not to give up the optimism here, but I’m out of ideas on promotion beyond being obnoxious.  Not even sure why I do this again on my blog since everyone I know here has offered a hand, which I say a big THANK YOU for even if I don’t make it.  Anyway,  click on the word below to go to the Thunderclap site and give your support if you haven’t already:

Hippopotamus

(I didn’t say it would be a related word.)

The second item is my Amazon Author Page.  Did you know that you could hit a like button on that page?  This helps promote the author AND all associated books.  There are author rankings that you may see on some of the high profile pages.  The likes and visiting of an author page (I believe) helps with this.  So, I’m asking for people to simply go to my Author Page and hit like.  Just that simple.  Click on the word below for that page and an early thank you:

Defenestration

Again, thank you for any help and support.  I shall finish with a picture of my culinary supervisor:

Trauma and Auras

Magic the Gathering Card- Essence Backlash

Magic the Gathering Card- Essence Backlash

I realized that I’ve explained a lot about how the magic of Windemere works, but I never really went into details with how it can stop working.  There are dead pockets (no magic can work) and cataclysmic regions (magic doesn’t work correctly), which alter spells.  Those are all outward influences, but there is an internal issue that can utterly destroy a caster: TRAUMA.

Remember that aura in Windemere is life energy, so casters are throwing part of themselves when they cast spells.  This leaves them open to negative side-effects that result in trauma.  There are various methods that this can happen.  As seen with Nyx, extremely powerful spells create a connection to targets and you can feel the death of that target if it’s a combat spell.  This caused her to lose access to her magic for a time, which was combined with her losing faith in her own abilities.  A caster can also be struck by backlash if they cast a spell that they don’t fully understand or are too inexperienced to attempt.  Finally, there are a few counterspells that are designed to cause trauma, but they also run the risk of affecting their caster as well.

The affects of trauma on an aura can range from inability to cast magic to simply being reduced in power.  A more powerful caster will suffer a greater affect even though they are less likely to be hit with debilitating trauma.  In other words, Trinity will get hit harder than Sari even though Sari has a higher chance of being traumatized.  Though I will admit that Sari is rather difficult to damage to that extent due to her positive nature and already surviving several hardships.  Anyway, there are several factors that relate to the level of damage.  The degree can be different for every caster and even every time.  Most times it involves a mental block caused by a subconscious fear of being hurt again, so therapy has been known to help.

Now that isn’t to say aura trauma can always be undone.  Aedyn mentions at one point that priests do have spells to revive magic, but there are times where the caster is simply done.  Their aura has been severed and lost to the ether, which means they can never cast a spell again.  Since all living things have an aura, these people have just enough to avoid becoming undead.  If they lost it all then they would become either a zombie or, if evil-natured, a Lich.  So you can see that trauma can create one of the darkest creatures outside of demons.  Tales of these incidents is one of the reasons why not everyone tries to become a caster.

So there you have the downside of magic in Windemere.

Core of the Champions: Delvin Cunningham

Final Fantasy Tactics Knight (CLICK PICTURE FOR THE COMPASS KEY AMAZON SITE)

Final Fantasy Tactics Knight (CLICK PICTURE FOR THE COMPASS KEY AMAZON SITE)

(First, I put a link to THE COMPASS KEY on the above picture because I had the other books linked in the previous posts.  I didn’t have a picture of Delvin by the writing of this post.  Though I guess there’s a chance that I still don’t when this goes live a month from now.)

Delvin is the newest champion and he’s been another tough one to figure out.  Probably harder than Timoran because he didn’t even have an element at the beginning.  He was the Life Hero and originally developed regeneration and . . . basically he was going to become Wolverine in the game.  That’s been changed and put him in limbo for a while.  His personality is laid back with a bit of Luke and Timoran in there.  Delvin is brave, wise, thoughtful, kind, relaxed, and serious.  It was such a mix that I couldn’t pinpoint a specific aspect.  I did try for humanity, intelligence, compassion (a certain villain blew that out of the water pretty quickly), honor (before Timoran), and so many others.  I’m still not 100% certain on what to call this.  So here’s my best shot.

Delvin is very loyal to his friends and takes their hardships personally.  Like the others, he’ll step up really quickly to defend them.  This puts him in a central protector role within the group.  Yet, he also stands up to the others when they bicker.  Similar to how Sari gets involved in the relationships, Delvin will either be the one to talk to an upset friend or tell someone better suited to do it.  He has a problem seeing his friends in pain and he is very good at keeping the peace.  The only other characters who did this before Delvin were Aedyn Karwyn and Timoran, but neither of them took the initiative that he does.

This can relate to his fighting style too.  In battle, Delvin uses a parry/counter style and defends his allies when they need it.  Going back-to-back is a common tactic that he uses when paired off with someone.  Again he finds himself in a protective role when these situations occur and his prowess seems to increase.  The focus on keeping his friends alive and well pushes him to access the abilities that he isn’t really aware of.  To be fair, I’m not really sure what he can do yet either.  I’m getting to that book when I get through all the editing, so it’ll be interesting to see.

So Delvin can probably be called the Hero of Friendship or the Protector Hero if you needed to give him a title.  His virtue/emotion is rather simply for him to access and the potency of it depends a lot on how many people he’s protecting.  For example, protecting his friends gives him decent strength, but protecting an entire city can make him very powerful when his true aura is awakened.

That ends the Champion Core posts.  Guess I’ll do the 6th one when that character makes his/her debut.
