Find Your Philosophy & You Find Your Writers Voice

Sacha Black's avatarSacha Black

VoiceI’m grappling. Not the fun, half-naked, sweat soaked, rough and tumble kind of grapple. The unwillingly blindfolded, crashing into table corners while searching for something as immutably difficult to find as the holy grail.
My writers ‘voice’.
I know. Collective sigh. Honestly I’ve lost count of the number of posts, quotes and motivational spiels I’ve read on finding your writers voice.
And did any of them help? Nope. But not because they weren’t right, or helpful. But because I was the blind leading the blind in a one-legged donkey race for Quills R’ Us. I didn’t know what I was looking for.  In fact, I hadn’t found so much as a single proverbial needle from an entire field of haystacks.

Fancy an Afternoon Away?

Some interesting questions. To be honest, I have no idea what I would do with free time. Probably waste it being paranoid about it going to waste or getting disturbed.

Julian Froment's avatarJulian Froment's Blog

So what do you like to do when you get a little free time? I know that many people have busy lives and don’t get a lot of free time, but just imagine that you get an unexpected break.

What would you do with that time?

Answers on a postcard, please. Oh, sorry, that was back in the 80’s, how about you just leave a comment. Drag me back into this technological age in which we now live.

Would you spend the afternoon with a friend? Alone? Take a walk? Go out for coffee? Let me know.

How about enjoying a coloring book dedicated to those activities that many of us would do if we got that free time. That Afternoon Away.

About the Author

Craig Boyack 02I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I’m not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.

I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century, and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.

I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Here it is – Coming in April

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

In April, I will be releasing the fourth book in my Frank Rozzani Detective Series. In anticipation of that, I wanted to tell you a little bit about the book and reveal the cover.

Here is a synopsis:

Frank Rozzani, a transplant to Jacksonville, Florida from Syracuse, New York, has left his tragic past as a police officer behind for life as a private detective. Frank and his partner Clifford “Jonesy” Jones work with the local police to solve crimes that are virtually unsolvable.

In Frankly My Dear, the fourth in the Frank Rozzani Detective Series of novels, Frank and Jonesy are at it again and this time the case is one of the most bizarre that they have faced. Their latest client, arrested for domestic abuse, swears that he is the victim of one of the most vengeful women on the face of the earth.

This Post May Have Gotten Away From Me

I had to wake up at 4 AM to drive some people to the airport.  This is going on top of a few long times to minimize the damage caused by lots of delays and errands.  Probably should have stuck to sleep.  Anyway, I did come home with enough time to crawl back into bed and make up the difference.  Just kidding.  I only crawled back into bed and did my usual 40-60 minutes of tossing and turning before passing out.  Not much help since there’s a reason I can’t sleep in:

The face of mischief

The face of mischief

He didn’t have the lightsaber, but I was woken up by him crawling into the bed.  It wasn’t the movement that really got me to stir.  It was my wife talking at full volume about how they have to be quiet because daddy was up early and needed to get more sleep.  Heart was in the right place, I guess.  Still, you don’t have a lengthy, loud discussion about letting someone sleep while the person in question is a foot away and currently being used as a seat by one of the debaters.  Needless to say, I’m off what little game I have.

Not that this week was a good one.  I’m actually cautious about posting about it.  As some people know, I’ve been trying to shrug off ‘the blues’ since last October.  Maybe even earlier.  I hate to call it a depression since I’ve never been diagnosed.  It does run in the family, so it wouldn’t be surprising.  Stress hits and I fall into this pit where I can’t drag myself out.  When I do, I get struck down again by another setback that’s beyond my control.  I try to use what little good cheer I have for my characters, but Legends of Windemere has hit the dark patch.  I’ll get more into that later.  This might be why I’m so resistant to give up on Crossing Bedlam even though it isn’t selling.  The books are fun to write with characters that tend to be upbeat and make me smile.  Tossing it aside feels like it would be the equivalent of murdering one of the few rainbows I have in a dark life.

Here is where people may rush to the comments to give a pep talk or tell me why I should be happy.  I’m actually going to ask that you not do that.  Please comment, but the pep talks have a funny reaction.  I’m going to see if I can explain this well.  The advice actually frustrates me because I’ve heard stuff like it before.  Many times, people will tell me why I should be happy in a way that makes me think they weren’t really listening.  That’s part of it though.  Somebody simply listening and then talking about another aspect of the post or showing interest in something I do works better.  Sounds strange, but I think I’ve gotten so used to people mistaking my funks for immaturity or a cry for pity that I can’t see certain reactions as anything more than condensation.  That’s probably not the intent, but ‘the blues’ that I find myself in don’t really work off rational thinking.  Half the time, I can’t even pinpoint the exact cause of it.  For example, a common thing with me is that I’ll feel blue when grocery shopping alone.  Just hits me without warning and doesn’t go away until I get home.

Honestly, people who suffer from depression are very misunderstood.  One reason is because the term is used with such casualness that it’s lost its weight.  This is why I’m always resistant to use it.  People will say they’re depressed when they’re simply sad, so a person who truly suffers from depression will be seen in the same light.  It also garners the same reactions that can make them feel worse.  Never tell a person who is depressed about those who are in worse positions because it minimizes their suffering and makes them feel worse.  Again, it could be as easy as listening to them talk about it or showing interest in something they love.  I’m not a psychologist, so don’t take what I’m saying as fact.  I only know what works for me.

So . . . That took up more words than I expected.  I have the house to myself during the day for most of the week, but I’m also the only cook here.  Supposed to snow tomorrow too, which means shoveling.  I don’t think I’ll finish Book 13 before my son starts his Easter Break on Thursday.  I might be given a day to write or have to use night to get the final chapter or two done.  This book is rough because it has a really high body count and list of returning characters.  Basically, the Baron’s remaining agents have declared full war on the champions and have put targets on all of their friends and family.  It’s all about pain, suffering, and holding onto that spark of hope to see you through to the end.  So all of that probably isn’t helping me.  Because of a big loss at the end of Book 12, the characters are rather jumpy too.  They hit highs and lows pretty easily because their foundation has been broken.

So, what are my goals?

  1. At least come close to finishing Ritual of the Lost Lamb.
  2. Examine character list for Chasing Bedlam.  Plan on outlining all of April since the kid has the last week off.  Not enough time to write a full book.
  3. Activities for his break.  Zoos, Easter eggs, movies, etc.
  4. Cook dinners.
  5. Vacuum house.
  6. Pick up people at airport when they get in.
  7. Start thinking of the May release of Tribe of the Snow Tiger.  Jason and I have been discussing the cover idea.  He has something really cool planned.
  8. Biking if I feel up to it.  The blues have made that more difficult.

Now the music video that nobody will listen to because TRADITION!  (Really, Pandora?)

What’s Fun to Do in Windemere?

Tidus playing Blitzball in FFX

Tidus playing Blitzball in FFX

John W. Howell asked if there were any entertainment activities in Windemere aside from the eating and drinking places that the champions find.  There are plenty of things to do, but it’s hard to bring them into the stories.  Part of the problem is that Legends of Windemere is a quest adventure, so these types of things become extraneous unless something happens around the event.  Aside from the arena fight in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and the Rodil Darts in Beginning of a Hero, there hasn’t been much else in the realm of entertainment.

There are a lot of things you would expect that I don’t have to go into detail about.  Plays, circuses, gaming parlors, and simple sports exist when some being at the professional level.  In regards to sports, you do have versions of soccer and basketball that are found within the kingdom of Serab.  The barbarians have wrestling and some of your more classical Olympic events like javelin throwing and shot putting.  Yagervan has a sport that is an elaborate capture the flag race while Bor’daruk is similar to Serab.  The latter is in a desert, so they can’t do much because sand isn’t easy to work with.  To be honest, there are various sports scattered about the world.

People might be wondering what some of the more elaborate and unique things are or if there’s anything at all.  Well, I have 2 that are in the notebooks, but I’m not sure how to fit them into the stories.

Lords of Hyperscape

You might be wondering why this sounds like the name of a video game.  Well, it is a type of video game that the gnomes invented or will invent after Legends of Windemere.  It involves plunging the players into a detailed illusion world that they can interact with and other people can watch through scrying pools.  Due to the magical power needed for this entertainment, it’s closer to a sport and there is no home version.  Imagine the lawsuits on that disaster since you need a lot of precautions.

The way the game works is that each player is covered in an illusion that moves with their body and is altered as they progress.  The reason this is a popular activity is because not everyone can go on adventures or become a soldier, so this is a way for some people to safely experience it.  So there is a casual gaming parlor located in Nevra Coil that you can use for an hour or two.  Yet the real fun is watching the league that has turned up around this technology.  Teams compete in various matches and landscapes while the fans watch through the portals.  I was planning a story that revolved around a new team appearing to reclaim the game, which had become tedious and dull.  Not sure if this is still going to happen, but you never know.

Clutch Ball

Long ago, a friend and I were talking about video games and thought Legends of Windemere would be a fun RPG.  I began designing various parts of it such as character abilities, magic system, battle system, and side quests.  I only made it as far as Timoran before I decided I should focus more on the books.  Still, one of the side quests came up because I’d been playing FFX, which had Blitz Ball.  I designed a sport for Windemere called Clutch Ball.

There are two teams and each one has a nest full of ‘egg’s that they have to protect.  Extra eggs are around the arena that they have to capture before time runs out.  The team with the most eggs at the end win.  Stealing is allowed as is using the non-lethal weapons to stun opponents.  This sounds rather simple, right?

Well, this is done with flying mounts, which means all of this is happening far above the ground with an arena that is both huge and filled with obstacles.  The mounts I had were griffins, pegasi, wyverns, hippogriffs, nightmares (winged skeletal horses), giant bats, and Gnomish flying machines.  There are enchanted items given to players to avoid falling to their death and the beasts are tamed.  Usually every team has the same type of mount, but some of the species get along with each other, so mixed groups have appeared from time to time.  Nearly every big city on Windemere has a team and there is a yearly competition that takes place in Cerascent due to their various islands.

So those are the forms of entertainment in Windemere.  There’s also a competition between the Sister Cities of Serab, which resembles the Olympics.  Various events and the winner gets gloating rights and respect.  Also a really big trophy that has the blessing of Cessia the Luck Goddess on it.  Any effect the trophy has on prosperity is accidental because the blessing is really for the oversized cup to never be destroyed and always find its way back to its home if lost.

Questions 3: Animal, Vegetable, and Mineral

No idea about this one

No idea about this one

I’m working hard on a book and this week has been horrific in terms of distractions and all around suckage.  So I didn’t really know where to go with this.  The last couple of ‘Questions 3’ were author based, but I couldn’t think of a topic from that arena.  Decided to go with the classics and just see what ensues.  Seems the questions go from normal to wacky here.

  1. If you could have one animal power, what would it be and why?
  2. Why do you think vegetables get such a bad rap?
  3. What is your opinion on rocks?

Lisa Burton Radio with John Cannon #RRBC

Another fun character interview.

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa the Robot Girl, and this is the show all about characters. I understand more than anyone, that characters make the stories complete. Where would our authors be without them?

Today’s sponsor is the John J. Cannon Trilogy by John W. Howell. The main character of these stories is John J. Cannon. He’s waiting on the line, so let’s welcome him to the show.

“Hi, John. Welcome to Lisa Burton Radio. It’s an honor to have a genuine hero on the show.”

“Hello Lisa. I am very pleased to be on your show. I have been seeing a number of your posters and I have to admit you are certainly getting around these days.”

“Well aren’t you sweet, thank you. You’re a litigation attorney, taking a leave of absence from your firm at the time of these stories. It…
