When I Am Not Enough… Guest Post by Tina Frisco…

Throughout our lives, we hear ourselves say:  ‘I’m not that good!’  ‘I’ll never make it.’  ‘I wish I could write that well.’  ‘If only I had said. . .’

Words are powerful. Energy follows thought. The words we speak to ourselves drive our subconscious minds. Diminishing thoughts tell the subconscious we are not enough.

The subconscious mind is self-serving. Its mission is to fulfill our every desire, and it sets in motion the means by which to do so. It takes our words at face value and strives to manifest what they represent. It assumes that what we think and say is what we hope and dream.

How often have we heard ourselves utter, ‘Did I say that’? Unless we’re channeling spirit, the mouth speaks what the subconscious mind thinks. If thought rests in the conscious mind, we are aware of it and can choose whether or not to give it a…

Luke Connections: So Many Choices

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

This will probably be quick.  Just wanted to get a few opinions on this idea I had to kick off the April posts.  First, I know it’s a ways away, but I’m going to have a busy March and early April.  Not counting the possible release of Legends of Windemere: Ritual of the Lost Lamb.  Family event coming and breaks for the kid all over the place, so I need to prep in advance.  Tuesdays and Thursdays might become rather random too since I never have anything scheduled then.

Anyway, the next Windemere book focuses a lot on Luke’s relationships and how his current situation effects them.  I wanted to make a post highlighting the big ones for each day during that first week.  Of course, Nyx, Sari, and Kira Grasdon would have the big three for Monday/Wednesday/Friday.  I’m just wondering if it’s right to give Fizzle his own and then put the other three champions into a single post.  Should I even include them?  Fizzle I get since he’s been with Luke since the beginning.  The others are close to him, but not like the other four.  So, is there a 5th core relationship that I’m missing from Luke?  Was wondering if anybody had a suggestion or thought that would help me with this little mystery.

Also . . . Eh, that can wait until Tuesday.

The Lifting Lab: Airships to Order

Final Fantasy 7 Highwind

Final Fantasy 7 Highwind

Welcome to . . . what do you mean this is unprecedented?  Look, I’m really busy here since airships are a new technology.  Half of what we make even lasts a month before crashing, bursting into flames, or not working.  In our defense, we have to outsource to other labs when deadlines get tight.  Also in our defense, nobody has died because we take safety extremely seriously.  Teleportation seats, protection bubbles, water spouts, and rescue breezes are all available.  You have to pick at least one to finish the contract.  So, how big do you want your airship?

I assume we’re talking a small family and not extended.  That gives you two choices that aren’t our biggest sellers because most people want huge.  Seriously, I sold an airship that can fit five hundred people to a nobleman that refuses to let anyone else on it.  He crashed it into the ocean on the first flight because he lacked a crew.  Now, the first one is a golem-powered pedal ship that has a control room, one common room, no kitchen, and scattered compartments for storage.  The second is powered by flight crystals and you would control the ship through the sensory orb.  That one has a kitchen and the driver’s spot is more like a closet because you don’t want other people to get in the way.  Storage is more centralized too.  I’m pushing that one more because you mentioned kids and the golems can be a little scary.

Great, so that’s the second and now we have to decide on color.  No, we don’t do weaponry because of contracts and various laws.  You can outfit it if you want, but you will sign a letter that says all alterations made after the sale are not our responsibility.  This is a fairly new technology, so we don’t have a lot of additions.  I guess I could explain more of the inside if you want.  To make room for guests, golems, and the driver, we put all of the mechanical pieces in shielded shafts that run throughout the airship.  This means you don’t have a central engineering room, which does have the downside of making issues more difficult to find.  We can include a scan and repair system that is still in the experimental phase.  That wouldn’t be extra since you can list yourself as a tester and merely report to us at the end of every week.  No problems with it so far beyond one time it mistook the flight gems for foreign entities and ejected them from the ship.  We’ve made sure that can’t happen again . . . in flight.

Now getting back to color.  Yes, we do have a few camouflage systems, which will allow you to blend into the sky.  I don’t recommend any of them though.  Not what you would expect, but I’m a scientist before I’m a salesman.  They work perfectly, but other flying things crash into them.  We need to find a way to keep the airships hidden from sight, sound, and touch.  Ever hear a griffin slam into a fortified window?  Nowhere near as funny as you would think and they get really angry.  Trust me when I say it isn’t worth the risk even for advancement.

“Of course, I’ll send you a copy. My bio doesn’t go over the biology of pixies, and we have you on the phone today, so can you tell us a little bit about Pixies in general?”

7 Tips to Putting Vehicles in Fiction

Someone Made a Wrong Turn

Someone Made a Wrong Turn

  1. Make sure the vehicles fit the world.  Riding a horse through a futuristic utopia that has spaceships everywhere might seem cool, but it could be very impractical.  Then again, you might not consider a horse a vehicle since it’s alive.  Driving a car through the marketplace of a dwarven city is just asking for trouble too.  All of this can be fixed if you establish that the vehicles are viable either through others using them or a story behind them existing.  This means world-building to explain why a civilization would have interplanetary travel and oat-fueled horses.
  2. Speaking of oats, always consider availability of fuel for the chosen vehicles.  If the fuel is rare then it needs to be used sparingly or getting supplies is always high on the priority list.  We all remember those episodes of old sci-fi shows where the ship runs out of juice and they need to find a way to get more.  You can always fix this by having fuel be plentiful, but that also means you’d have a lot of vehicles around since fuel is not a problem.
  3. Always remember that it takes time to start up a vehicle.  Yes, you can have an automatic starter or a spell that gets everything moving as soon as the driver gets behind the wheel.  Make this clear or it comes off that the person manages to sit, close the door, put the key in the ignition, turn the car on, and get it moving instantly.  Not to mention the seat belt suddenly being on.  Maybe time yourself doing this to get an idea of how long it takes.
  4. Cool it with the talking vehicles.  We get it.  They have attitude that usually includes a high level of sass.  You know, we have Siri and talking GPS’s now.  This isn’t as impressive as it once was.  Fine, maybe I just don’t like it because my GPS is a freaking idiot that keeps trying to send me to Canada.
  5. Runways.  Seriously, airplanes need these to get off the ground.
  6. When vehicles are being used in a fight, remember that they can be damaged.  Armor plating is fine, but you still have wheels, windows, and something internal could be shaken loose by an impact.  Think of it like a person going through a battle.  The human body can take some damage and keep moving, but it may become slower and weaker.  There is also a big threat of a lethal blow.  Bullet to the engine is just like a bullet to the brain.
  7. Tanks don’t always win.  They’re big, armored, and have that huge gun, but they still have weaknesses.  A faster vehicle has an advantage and tanks aren’t very good at firing while moving.  Not with the greatest accuracy at least.  Let’s also remember that you usually have more than one person operating a tank.  Reading up on it says 4-5 people with a driver, commander, loader, and gunner.  Yes, the utter destruction that a tank can cause and the way it barrels over things is awesome.  Just try to keep it somewhat believable.
