Five Ways to Contact Your Favorite Author – Guest Post by John W. Howell…

Since I have been asked a number of times by readers how to contact authors, I thought it would be good to provide a little reminder information about what you can do if you enjoy a book or author’s work and you want to get to know that author better.

We all have the times when a book or series of books talk to us as if the author wrote the text for us alone. I remember reading the short stories of John Cheever many years ago. It was almost as if John had entered my life and was telling tales about me as a person. As a result, I wanted to make contact with him but had no idea how. In those days, most authors used their publisher as a shield from their readers. You could pen a note and hope it somehow got through. I did compose…

Always with the Bugs!

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

I’m guilty of this myself, but there’s something about bugs being used as obstacles and monsters that goes through the ages.  Flesh-eating beetles, giant spiders, worms of various terrains, so many flies, and other creepy crawlies simply litter fiction.  You have them on other planets and invading Earth.  Not all of them are alien in nature since humans have been responsible for some.  The list of origins and creatures are so vast that you’ll inevitably miss a lot.

I have to wonder why we gravitate so much towards bugs as threats.  At first, I thought it was our aversion to slimy things, but not everybody has that.  On the other hand, we could focus on the fact that humans are animals and we all have instincts.  Those habits that are locked into our nature can hold some clue.  Specifically, a fear of getting stung and swarmed.  I’ve been bitten by ants and leaped on by spiders, which sent me flailing about like an idiot.  Then there are times flies get into the house and drive me nuts by buzzing into my face when the lights are off.  Don’t even get me started on mosquitoes that seem to hit both issues.

The probably stems from phobias and bugs, specifically spiders and yes I know they’re arachnids, tend to be the big ones.  Snakes are pretty common threats too, but I think bugs take the championship.  If you consider that every monster stems from a primal fear then I guess it makes sense.  Keep imagining what ancient man would think if they came across a pit of worms after a rainstorm or were chased by a swarm of locusts. It would have been unnerving, especially if you were barefoot on that first one.  Not to mention the fear that would happen after a person was bitten and died.  I doubt anyone knew right off the bat that some bugs could kill a human, so there would be a lot of ideas in regards to what happened.

The more I write about this, the more I wonder if this is a personal preference.  I used to gather bugs in a pail with dirt when I was a kid.  Mostly pill bugs, snails, centipedes, millipedes and ants.  Tried earthworms for a bit, but they weren’t very interesting to watch.  Flying bugs were out of the question since the most common ones were wasps and gnats.  Don’t even get me started on my attempts to catch spiders, which usually resulted in me getting jumped on.  Fed them ants though because I had a fascination with watching them hunt.  Not a big fan of spiders these days, but their love of getting on my face might have something to do with that.  Anyway, I wonder if this early interest is why I gravitate toward bugs when making monsters and other threats.  That doesn’t explain why they show up in other people’s fictions though.

I’m going to open up the floor and see what people think.  Why do you think bugs are so common in fiction when it comes to threats?

Swift Six Author Interview- TM Lakomy- Fantasy

eranamage's avatarLibrary of Erana

Name: T. M. Lakomy (Tamara Lakomy)

What attracts you to the genre in which you write? I was always attracted to the darker aspects of fantasy, the fabric of our dreams and nightmares, where our wildest imaginations often have free rein. I find that this genre allows the story to be raw and cutting to the bone, with a realistic touch, lending fantasy a feel of authenticity. It makes it easier to believe as it reflects the darker aspects of human nature and existence.

What piece of writing advice do you wish you’d known when you started your writing adventures? That the amount of rejection has nothing to do with the quality of your work but rather a reflection on whether someone thinks they can sell and market it, it is nothing personal but rather a business transaction. So basically, keep pushing and don’t be discouraged, write for yourself, pour…

Danny Confesses…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Good morning, gentle souls; I am Daniel J. Daniels, Dog Extraordinaire. Most of you will know me by my nom de plume, Danny the Dog. As another great writer (but not as good as me) once said, “A rose by any other name . . .”

danny-xxx
Today I have a smorgasbord of tales to tell. So sit back and relax. Put your feet up, light your favorite pipe, have a glass of wine, or dig into that box of chocolates that has been calling to you—for you are in for a rare treat. Today I am going to confess a few (just a few) of my sins. At least Andrew, my human, refers to them as sins. I say they are only idiosyncrasies. But I’ll let you kind, empathetic, thoughtful, and intelligent folks be the judge.

I think I’ll start off with the longest-running complaint Andrew has about me…

Luke Callindor’s Tips to Adventuring

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

Well, others have had a chance to do a 7 tip list, so I guess it’s my turn.  Not really sure what I can talk about though since I’m still figuring stuff out on my own.  Everyone else has had experience with adventuring or at least traveling.  I know I’ve gone through a lot, but they have too.  Guess I still feel like an amateur among veterans, but at least I’m still alive.  Maybe that’s what I can talk about and see where it goes. I have learned a few things about adventuring.

  1. Confidence in the field can keep you alive.  It can also get you into trouble.  People are less likely to pick a fight if they think you’re stronger than you are.  At the very least, they’ll underestimate you.  I’ve been told that I had too much confidence when I started, so I try to be more humble these days.  Not sure how well I’m doing because winning a fight still feels pretty good.
  2. Mouthing off is a double-edge sword, especially during combat.  It takes practice to talk and fight at the same time.  Even if you’ve done it for years, you need to shut up when things start getting really dicey.  That doesn’t mean you can’t throw out an insult or some type of barb.  Warriors get pretty heated when a fight draws on for more than a few blows.  Many don’t get phased by insults, but others do.  It’s easier when you go against an enemy that isn’t trained or you know personally.
  3. Speaking of angering people, try not to do it too much to your allies.  That is unless you can cast magic, sword fight, steal, heal, track, cook, sew, and do everything else a person could possibly need on an adventure.  Even Dariana can’t do all of that and she’s been around for centuries.  This is easier to follow when you’re working with friends that trust and respect you.  The point is that you live longer when you’re not alone.
  4. Find a mentor and actually listen.  I speak this from experience of doing the opposite for a while. Drove my grandfather and Selenia crazy when they were trying to teach me how to survive.  The lessons still stuck, but it’s much easier to do when you’re working with them.  Not to mention they’re happier when you come back and don’t start making plans to repair stuff after your visit.  In Selenia’s defense, trouble does have a habit of following me to her doorstep.
  5. Gear maintenance is very important.  Keep your blades sharp, your waterskins full, food edible, and armor intact.  I don’t really use armor, but you get the point.  Last thing you want is to be on the road and have something break.  This doesn’t only go for weapons.  Cheap rope can dry out, fray, and snap when you really need it, so always check the more mundane supplies before you leave a town.
  6. Never scoff at any job because adventuring doesn’t pay very well.  Honestly, I don’t know where people got the idea that every monster has money on them.  Most of them don’t even have pockets and it isn’t like they swallow gold coins in the morning.  You can loot ruins or be a hunter of some kind, but heroic adventures for the good of the world don’t have a salary.  I know I probably shouldn’t talk since I’m a champion and every temple has a treasure vault.  Not really sure what to do about that.  Seems pointless to have more than I can carry without weighing myself down.
  7. This might not seem like a good way to survive, but it’s very important to have fun.  If you don’t enjoy the adventure then you might get sloppy.  This doesn’t mean run in wild and put fun above all else.  All I’m saying is that you have to enjoy what you do and that goes double for adventuring, which can take a toll on your body, mind, and soul.  Honestly, if I stopped having fun and had to keep going down this path then I’d probably go insane.

Almost Quiet

The week is done
With no work to show
Though memories have been forged

Rough awakenings
And no time to rest
Much yawning in my future

Most plans were met
Since the weather held
I would have liked a day of rain

Endless questions
Replaced by near silence
Leaving a ringing in my ears

Now back to school
And back to work
Flimsy deadlines are ahead
