Progress and Goals: What Could Go Wrong?

There’s been something eating at me for a while and I needed to get it off my chest.  That will be tomorrow.  Wrote up the post to get the rant and frustration out of my system before I wrote this one.  Really hoping I don’t have to deal with a lot of fallout from tomorrow’s post, but I figure it had to be said.  While it isn’t the topic of that post, I do mention what the ‘unpublishable’ project is.  We’ll see how all that goes over, but I’ll try to be positive here.

So . . . positive . . . happiness . . . pizza . . . Uh . . . Give me a minute.

Okay, things are still a little chaotic around here and looking to stay that way until mid-April.  That’s not negative.  Just a fact that is preventing me from seeing ‘Logan’ and ‘King Kong’ unless one of them stays in theaters long enough for my April 9th birthday visit.  Fingers crossed there.  For everyone’s amusement, I go from family event to birthday to Ritual of the Lost Lamb release to my son’s Spring Break in the span of 2 weeks.  I’m going to be a basket case by the time May comes around. Good thing I’m getting the time sensitive projects done now.

I managed to write 2.5 stories for Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.  This covers Jester Flute, Orphan’s Shadow, and half of Zaria’s Kiss.  I’m hoping to finish Zaria’s Kiss by the end of Monday.  That leaves me the rest of the week to write the finale, which I’ve slated to be the longest of the short stories.  I’m looking at 11 stories hitting 240-250 pages. I’m hoping people see the story amount and realize that you can read one, walk away, and then come back for another.  Even though they’re short stories, I still wanted to give some development and decent action.  It is strange doing a brief intro and scattered description for Ichabod in every story.  I’m treating this in a way that I could present any one story and people won’t be lost as to who this man is.  Almost like I’m starting a new project every time I hit a new story, which throws me off a bit.  With any luck, I’ll ask about beta readers in a week.

I have made a decision about the next project.  Since I’ll only have 3 weeks before the chaos mentioned above, I can’t tackle the next Bedlam book, the Legends of Windemere spinoff solo, or the first War of Nightfall.  Two of those would require 4-5 weeks of writing and the other I’m not emotionally ready for.  Writing that spinoff certainly feels like true finality for my first series.  I’m thinking I can write the next Dawn Addison story for October and then do prep work for whatever I do next.  Tomorrow’s post will hint why I’m hesitant to put some projects at the top of the list.  I’ll probably spend April editing the last two Legends of Windemere books while promoting Ritual of the Lost Lamb.  Maybe that will get me ready to write the spinoff in May and I’ll use the summer for something else.

Next week is going to be iffy as far as reaching a true deadline.  I’m hoping to get 2-3 sections done over the weekend to make up for losing Tuesday at least.  My son is supposedly doing a story reading and then they have a book sale at night, so we’re going to get a few.  I have a feeling he’ll want DC Superhero Girl books.  You read that right.  He saw the picture of teenage Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Supergirl when I was scrolling through kid shows.  Now he keeps asking for the mini-episodes in the morning.  Can’t really complain.  It’s entertaining to talk to him about characters like Katana, Star Sapphire, Killer Frost, and others that aren’t the more common heroes.  Although, I’m having trouble explaining Mad Harriet:

Mad Harriet (DC Superhero Girls)

Mad Harriet (DC Superhero Girls)

She asked to ‘scratch’ a character named Cheetah and my son kept asking why she wanted to do that.  He still hasn’t figured out when a bad guy is making a creative threat.

Goals of the week:

  1. Finish Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks
  2. Parenting
  3. Biking and resistance bands
  4. Double check Dawn Addison 3 outline.  The fact that I forgot the title is a little worrisome.
  5. Look over Ritual of the Lost Lamb blurbs.  Might test those next Sunday, but I haven’t had any luck getting responses on weekends.
  6. Possibly bring car in for a tune up.
  7. Repeatedly beg laptop not to die and remind it that I can’t afford a replacement.

Curse of Poetry 101

I have to confess to something.  I had another post planned about Odd Obstacles in adventures, but I couldn’t figure what I was talking about.  Instead, I wandered around my files and found this poem from 2011.  It was part of a personal challenge to post a poem every day for a year and I believe this one came from being criticized about not following various rules.  God only knows what I did to the English language, but I’m tossing it up without editing or checking.  Let’s take some risks.  Right, Zoidberg?

zoidberg-meme

I hear it
I see it
The question
What is a poem?
It is an opening
A call
To shred
And maim
A defenseless expression
Born of heart
And soul

Does it truly matter
If we fail
To rhyme the words
When the emotions
Are so strong
Many
Say yes
These are the ones
That wait
In a stationary circle
Drooling
In anticipation
To tear
Into a work of soul
With no remorse
And a hint
Of smarmy pride

I tired of this
Long ago
Trying to put
Reason
To my madness
Always
The say ending
I would present
Reading loud
And clear
Only to find
That my words
Were empty
Rotted by my logic
And dependence
On the rules

No more
I play by rules
No more
Take your rhymes
Your meters
And choke on them
I let my fingers
Fly without true purpose
Following images
That dance
Behind closed eyes
Dictating
For unknown voices
I am at the whim
Of my imagination
And I feel peace

Knights of Old

Julian Froment's avatarJulian Froment's Blog

knightsKnights of Old

In days of yore
Of damsels and maids
Of women most fair
When battle was made

A mighty steed
A rampant charger
Dazzling armour
A knight sat proud

A lance in his hand
Spurs on his feet
He threw down the gauntlet
Cast his gage

Of rage and fury
On battlefield bleak
Judge and jury
And justice did reek

Gods will be done
Trial by combat
A test of arms
Running the lists

A lance in his hand
An axe, A sword
Maybe a mace
The weapons of a lord

Shield bedecked
With scarlet eagle
A griffin rearing
The three lion device

The sanctity of arms
The benediction of might
The blessing of arms
The glory of battle

The power of might
The right of power
Razing villages to the ground
E’en the flower filled bower

Men without charms
To the slaughter like cattle
Serfs and peasants

Review Revisited: My Grl by John Howell #thriller #ASMSG #99cents

My GRL

To celebrate John W. Howell’s re-release of his first novel, I’m reposting my review.  First, let me say the following:

GET MY GRL for 99 cents!

Now for the review that originally went live in 2014:

This was my first time reading a mystery/thriller and I expected there to be tons of action and intrigue.  Instead, I found a lot of suspense and colorful characters that kept me wanting to read more.  The pacing is fast at most points and there’s very little lingering on scenes.  A plot point is hit, suspicions are raised, twists occur, and then off to the next leg of the adventure.

I know from that description it sounds like I’m saying this is rushed, but it’s the opposite.  The speed of the story is one that tickles your nerves because you’re always wondering what something means.  A few times you even wonder if there’s a hidden significance to an event, so your mind keeps going back to it for reference.  Thankfully, My GRL is written in a way that you tend to remember everything.

One thing that took a little getting used to is the author’s habit of going into extreme descriptive detail.  His knowledge of boats, cars, and several other things is extensive and he lets you know that.  There are also points where it is a play-by-play of events.  It is a little jarring at first, but the first person narrative helped me adapt.  I figured the main character is a nervous talker and he sure has a lot to be nervous about in this story.  A few chapters in, I barely noticed because I got the feeling that every word could hold a clue as to what would happen.  It also managed to extend the suspense because I never knew when the description would lead to an ‘ah-ha!’ moment.

One of the only issue I had with the book was that the main character was overshadowed by most of the several characters.  I can’t really go into detail without spoilers, but John Cannon seems like a fish out of water for most of the book.  He is routinely overwhelmed even though he shows signs that he could probably talk or smile his way out of trouble.  It’s just that he never really pushes this ability to an effective level, so the more capable and skilled characters appear to be doing most of the legwork.  I really enjoyed Police Chief Ned and a later character that helps John.  In fact, I’d love to see them get their own books because I found them more interesting.  Maybe a sequel will occur since there is a good set up for the characters that make it to the end.

The other issue I had is more of a personal pet peeve.  One of the main villains had a really bizarre reason for getting John involved.  I kind of understand the rationale (or insanity), but I really couldn’t connect with it after having characters with such depth.  The other main villains came off as more dangerous and cunning.  This guy was intimidating and gave off a sense of being powerful, but his reasoning for hating John made him oddly petty and out of place among the terrorist villains.  Then again, he did set up a few impressive scenarios, so maybe it’s simply a case of the man behind the curtain should have stayed there.

Overall, I loved this story and hope the author has another planned.  This is his debut novel and it’s very impressive with high levels of suspense, which is what I think a thriller should have.  I highly recommend this book.  Also, I ask the author if we could get a Ned book.  I really liked Ned.

Rarity From the Hollow, on Lisa Burton Radio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Hey there all you androids and extra terrestrials, you’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio, the only show out there that interviews the characters you love from the books you have to read. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and with me in the studio today is Lacy Dawn. “Welcome to the show, Lacy.”

“Thanks for having me, Lisa. I hope that you’re not disappointed ‘cause I’m not a very important person like Harry Potter or Steve Harvey or someone famous.”

“I think you’re very important, Lacy. My bio says you are not a chosen one, like so many characters. You’re actually a designed one, using DNA manipulation. That’s pretty interesting. What can you tell our listeners about that?”

“Yeah, I know that it’s hard to believe. I didn’t believe it myself except Bucky would never lie to me. He’s this guy who lives in a spaceship hidden in a…
