Completions, Computers, and Confusion, but at least I’m Still Standing

This was definitely a week of highs and lows.  Head is still spinning, so I’ll start off with the good news.  I finished writing Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.  Maybe I should put a ‘THE’ at the beginning of that.  Beta readers have been sent the files and I need to locate/talk to a cover artist.  Really want this one to do well even though money is a little tight.  Any other authors out there having a really tough time getting attention for their books?  Feels like people simply don’t want to read or try new authors these days.  I mean, last year was bad, but this one is starting off on a foot that’s stuck in a rusty bear trap.

Anyway, completing the project didn’t come without a casualty.  My laptop decided to die in the middle of writing, which is something I say a lot.  Usually, it’s the hard drive trying to go for a walk.  So, I took out the battery, held the power button for 30 seconds, flipped it over, and went about fixing that.  Only problem is that the hard drive was in place.  I turned the laptop on again and it promptly said ‘Hi . . . Bye!!’.  It was apparently on, but not on and refused to be turned off.  A few hours later it came back to life, but with a new wrinkle.  I can only have Internet or Word open.  Try both (three if you consider I have Chrome and Firefox open) and it turns off again.  Oh yeah, the battery can’t charge more than 52% now.  Finished the projects and working on the desktop now.  I risk the laptop at night and use the phone for email, but night might be notebook work for now.

Talked with the family and a new laptop might be my birthday present from everyone.  I’m very thankful since I also had to get my car fixed up.  Tires, wipers, some hoses, and a fuel filter, which is in the friggin’ engine and required taking parts off.  Honestly, this has been a long time coming and it’s cheaper than getting a new car.  Poor thing is really ugly instead with part of the inner door cracked and the ceiling lining coming off.  It’s kind of been like that ever since Florida, which can be murder on cars.  Mine doesn’t have tinted windows, which probably did it.

Parenting-wise things were busy too.  My son was reading a story about the person he is lucky to have in his life.  My mom and I went and he was happy to see us.  Then, he read a story about mommy making granola bars, which stemmed from a promise she made on Sunday.  So, my wife got the story and paper flower when she got home from work.  I got to tease her about how it’s okay even though I make his lunch, breakfast, dinner, help with homework, bathe him, wake up early with him, blah, blah, blah.  He gets a kick out of me doing the dramatics because he knows it’ll end with a tickle fight.  We also went to a book fair and got him some new ones, including a comic about DC Superhero Girls.  Still working on the structure there.  We’re lucky Starfire and Raven make small appearances too because they’re the ones he abruptly wanted to see.

Now I must look to the future.  I’ll be testing out blurbs for Ritual of the Lost Lamb tomorrow, so I hope people swing by for those.  It’s a tough one with small spoilers that couldn’t be avoided without altering the blurb structure.  Not something I should do when I’m on Book 13.  For the weekend, I’ll be prepping May posts, but I’m running out of stuff to do on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The whimsy is getting drowned since so much is going on.  There’s the big event in early April and then the 1.5 week Spring Break for my son soon after.  Only a week between those two things, which doesn’t give me much time for full writing.  Next Monday, I’m planning to start working on the next Dawn Addison story for October and get stuff ready for Conquering Bedlam.  This is going to be a Bedlam story that will hopefully be posted Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday from June to September.

I say hope because I’m lost on what to do.  I mentioned this idea on Sunday and people seemed to like the idea.  Mentioned it again on Thursday and got the opposite reaction in my emails and messages.  This is the Lloyd & Cassidy vs ‘Trump’ thing.  I’m changing names, but lampooning all of the political figures in this kind of story does require that I make things a little obvious.  My goal is always to make them interesting and, at times, humorous.  I don’t even know if I’ll really be insulting here aside from making one or two pretty friggin’ dumb.  Something I noticed is that people who have an aversion to politics are giving me warnings.  Makes me wonder if I should have just done it and feigned ignorance about who the characters are like.  Not that anybody would believe me.  I’ve been looking at various villains and political figures that would be decent bad guys, but Bedlam typically has ‘over the top’ ones.  Hoping that helps me here.  Unfortunately, the title also means that Derailing Bedlam doesn’t fit the theme.

Goals for the week:

  1. Finish May posts.
  2. Work on Raven’s Dream
  3. Quick character designs for Conquering Bedlam
  4. Indulge in pizza celebration tradition at some point.  Snow stopped me yesterday.  It was in the 60’s on Thursday too.
  5. Talk to sister about computer since she has a discount.
  6. Possibly see ‘Logan’ tomorrow.
  7. Wash out my mouth with brandy.  No reason necessary.
  8. Continue using bike and resistance bands.  Those things really cause a burn in the muscles.  To be fair, I have the upper body strength of a Muppet.
  9. Set up new laptop when it arrives and get used to Windows 10.  So many passwords will be reset and then there’s the favorites/bookmark list.

Plans may change due to friggin’ snowstorm coming Tuesday.  I expect the kid to be home and my energy to be sapped.

A Time to Nap

 Muscles ache
And thoughts limp along
The week has not been kind
Brutal in its hours
With deadlines at your heels

A break comes within sight
Glistening on the horizon
Blocked by papers
appointments
And traffic forged from Hell

Even as your workload cries
Thoughts of sleep appear
The fun to be had
With even a day of peace
The sky may be the limit

So file your forms
And flip off the printer
No more jams until next week
For off to home you go
To reunite with life

Beta Readers for Ichabod Brooks & Thoughts for Bedlam

I’m not going to waste time on pictures here since I’m hoping to make this quick.  Part of it is also because my computer time is limited for a while.  I’ll explain more about that on Saturday because I have two important things to announce:

The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks

I just finished the short story collection.  It’s 11 tales at 250 pages, which I’m hoping to publish for $3.99 in the summer.  Need to find a cover artist for this and I want to be picky this time.  That computer problem also took out a file that had some suggestions made previously . . . ANYWAY!

I’m hoping to get some beta readers who can give me some feedback by May 15th.  I haven’t read through it myself beyond checking over the sections I wrote the previous day.  I do have one person here that will do some editing, but it doesn’t hurt to have more.

One thing to keep in mind is that each story is made to stand by itself, so there may be a little repetition in describing Ichabod.  I wanted to make it that a person could skip to any story and not be lost.  So, leave me a comment and I’ll send you the file in whatever format you prefer.  Right now I only have the Word file.

Conquering Bedlam?

On Sunday, I mentioned an idea that was kind of like ‘Lloyd & Cassidy vs Trump’.  I only say this because the villain I designed can be mistaken for him.  Tried changing it around, but the arrogance and refusal to admit defeat was too great a foil for my confident and psychotic heroes.  The character only shows up in the beginning and end while they go about taking on his minions.  Those would become fairly apparent too even with the changes to name and exaggerations to personality.  I’d be going for all side too if that’s what you were wondering.  So, what to do with this idea that is pestering me, but I don’t want to publish?

If people are interested, I will write it and then post the sections on Tuesdays and Thursday while promoting Crossing Bedlam and Chasing Bedlam.  Maybe something this risky can get them some sales if I end every post saying it’s $2 for the other stories.  This still poses some issues:

  1. Again I find a ‘C’ word before Bedlam.  Derailing Bedlam is seeming out of place now, which means I should go back to finding a ‘C’ word for that title.
  2. I might lose some people because I won’t tone down the violence, language, and innuendo here.  If I want to promote the books that are published then I want people to know what they’re getting.  Again, we’re looking at risk, which is why I’m hoping for some opinions here.
  3. There’s that political issue that I prefer to stay away from.  Yet, I think I’m overreacting here.  People will realize who I’m lampooning.  The thing is that people really don’t have a sense of humor about this stuff nowadays.
  4. Even taking over Tuesdays and Thursdays, I won’t get this written until the end of May.  That’s if I start it right after my son’s break.  Now, I was going to do another Dawn Addison story throughout October.  This would be a major overlap and mean that there would be days with two large posts.  I could pause Conquering Bedlam for that month, but that’s a momentum issue.  The other option is to leave Dawn for next year when I’ll either still be writing or be a ghost here.

So there’s a lot to think about with this second one.  I’d appreciate all suggestions and advice.  Seems this year is turning out to be just as chaotic as 2016.

Questions 3: Where Do You Go for a Laugh?

I always enjoy putting comedy into my books.  The categories tend to be sight gags, attempts at wit, and slapstick.  At least those are the ones I can recognize since I’m not an expert on comedy.  I like to laugh and grew up on a ton of comedies like Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, Three Stooges, Abbott & Costello, Mel Brooks, Lucille Ball, Bugs Bunny, and the list goes on.  Seriously, I probably should stop myself there or we’ll be here all day . . . Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy.  Okay, I’ll behave myself now.  (George Carlin)  So, let’s try a few questions about comedy:

  1. What is your favorite type of comedy?
  2. Who is one of your favorite comedians?
  3. Do you have a favorite joke, gag, etc.?

My quick answers:

  1. I always enjoy wit and wordplay.  Almost like a verbal sleight of hand.
  2. So many to choose from.  Robin Williams has always been a big favorite.
  3. One of the first jokes I ever understood was:  “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas.  How he got in my pajamas I’ll never know.”

Galactic Cruise Lines, on Lisa Burton Radio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Hold on to your hats everyone. You’ve found Lisa Burton Radio, the only show in the universe that interviews the characters from the books you love. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and with me in the studio today is Henri, the Executive Chef on Galactic Cruise Lines’ ship the SS Malpais.

What you can’t see, is that Henri is an Alturan. He’s nearly seven feet tall, and is a cephalopod type lifeform. I’m talking tentacles all over the place, and three eye-stalks. We’ve been enjoying a cup of Alturan tea before the broadcast, and he’s really an interesting person. “Welcome to the show, Henri.”

“Hello, Lisa. It’s good to be here. I hope you enjoyed the Bascula tea I brought. It can cause hallucinations in some species, but not Alturans. I hope it doesn’t affect you adversely.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I don’t think robot girls can…

7 Tips to Maintaining Your Break: Like I Should Talk?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

One of the toughest things about getting a break is that you don’t always know what to do with it.  I’m not talking a vacation where everything is planned out.  Those have a schedule and act like a reward at the end of a long road.  I’m talking about when you get a day or two to stay at home and recover your energy.  What can you do?

  1. Read a book.  It might take a little time to get used to sentences since you spent the week reading the bottles in the bathroom.  Maybe you can start slow with a take-out menu or the descriptions of whatever TV show you want to watch.  You’ll get to the book once that episode over.
  2. Watch some TV.  This is so much easier to do with DVR, streaming, and On-Demand stuff.  It can be something new or something you’ve had saved for a while.  Your brain doesn’t even have to be working on all thrusters, so you can use this to ease into the break.  Just turn on the TV, make sure there are snacks in reach, and curl up in bed for an hour or two.
  3. Go out for a walk and enjoy the fresh . . . you insane bastard.  I mean, have you seen the size of the bugs out there?  I’m talking bigger than a pinhead.  Take your life into your own hands if you like.
  4. Visit the zoo or museum because it’s been a long time.  This does mean you have to interact with people or at least see them.  Also, don’t do the outdoor one in bad weather and the indoor one in good weather.  That’s just getting your wires crossed and proving you have no idea how to relax any more.  Says the person who would be using both locations for story and monster ideas, so screw me.
  5. Do something artistic that counts as a hobby.  Origami books are out there on various topics like Pokemon and superheroes.  You can do painting, coloring, or make enough bird houses for the block.  I hear cross-stitching and photography can be good too.  This can roll out of control though.  Just yarn or pen drives all over the place.
  6. Test out some new recipes.  I’m sure you have a folder out there with things you desperately want to try.  With nothing else on your schedule, you can experiment and risk your stomach.  If you do get food poisoning then congratulations on the three or four day weekend.  Aim for the bucket.
  7. Whatever you do, wear comfy pants.

Writing Speculative Fiction – Guest Post by Craig Boyack…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

I write what I call speculative fiction. Many of the definitions out there never really give a crystal clear idea of what the genres mean, so I picked this name and made my own definition. To me, speculative fiction involves at least one unreal element.

Speculative fiction is a big enough field to keep me happy. It includes paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, horror, super heroes, and everything similar. I think I’ve dabbled in all of it to one degree or another.

One of the things I try to do is enough research to make it digestible. I’ve always said, “I don’t have to be perfect, I just have to be plausible.” The plausible parts make it easier for the reader to take that leap of faith when I need them to.

I did an extensive amount of research for my novel, Panama. I set this during the…
