Luther Grathan: Calm of Mind and Step

Abel Nightroad from Trinity Blood

The third member of the Vengeance Hounds is Luther Grathan who started from nearly nothing.  I was actually surprised how often I used him and where he was heading because I didn’t see much to him in the planning stages.  He filled the role of straight man to Bob’s antics, guarding Titus’s back, and handling part of the information gathering for Clyde’s gang.  Unlike Kai and next week’s character, Luther specialized in disguises and wandering the wilderness for news.  He certainly started as a more nature-based character, which is why he spent early versions as a rarity.  A few stories, he only had one scene to deliver a message and that was it.  Thankfully, that’s already started to change.

Like most of the cast, Luther was a game character and he came from the crew of Titus, Bob, and my dead author.  His name wasn’t Luther and I don’t remember the original since we were only in one session together.  Unlike the others, he was designed entirely on surviving and would go it alone a lot.  It wasn’t that he would leave everyone to die, but there was a big divide and meet up later mentality.  This guy was a master of that and wasn’t much for words.  His desire to NOT be killed meant he stayed away from the more destructive incidents.

This turned Luther into another blank slate character, but his initial build appeared fairly quickly.  I think the survivor mentality mixed perfectly with both adventure fantasy and vampires.  It became a clearer identity when I made him a forest tracker and gave him a few tricks to help with his spying.  He remained cautious and extended his desire to survive to those around him, which helped him be a foil to Titus and Bob.  He is the wisdom and clear words for Titus when things are getting personal.  He is the foil to Bob’s craziness and will join in at times to keep the elf in check.  Luther even got along with Kai who didn’t seem to be getting along with anyone.  Kind of proud of how far he’s come since his original creation.

Now, all of this came about in the actual writing instead of the profile.  In fact, one could say Luther is the most likable of the characters.  This is more by the other characters where only one person seemed to have issues with him.  It was situational too.  Even more surprising, Luther has connected with next week’s character.  I don’t want to spoil anything about her, but I can’t really call it a romance.  There’s this strange level of respect between them where they obviously have a soft spot for each other.  It came out of nowhere and I ran with it, so I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes.  Guess the main point of Luther is that he’s going to be an enigma for a while and will continue to surprise people.

I already mentioned Bob hurling a shopping cart at Luther in the game, but I have another story that I was told about.  It’s another Bob and Luther job where they ended up being on the run from the mafia.  How they got involved was not mentioned, but there was supposedly a helicopter involved.  Not them flying it, but falling from it while it was above the city.  Luther was hurt the most and had to be carried, which made things worse when they ended up trapped in an alley with a spiked fence in their path.  People might be realizing where this is going.  Luther healed himself enough to help with the tactic of Bob throwing him over . . . Well, it was supposed to be over.  Poor guy landed on the spikes and slid down as they were getting surrounded.  Bob still managed to get him off and the pair escaped to cause mayhem another day.  I think this is why I have the two characters interact so much in the books and take on a best friend relationship.

War of Nytefall, on #LisaBurtonRadio

Lisa Burton

Welcome all you night stalkers and day walkers. You’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio. The only show that brings you characters from the books you love. We’re in for a real treat today, because my guest is the harbinger of a new race. Okay, it’s a race of vampires, but still evolution at work and all that. “Let’s give a big welcome to Clyde.”

“Thanks for having me. Though, it’s kind of strange having people outside of my gang giving me a warm welcome. Vampires aren’t really loved and neither are thieves, so the combination doesn’t make me many friends.”

“Glad to have you on. My notes say that you were once a regular vampire, but something happened during the Great Cataclysm. What can you tell me about that?”

“First, I’m going to admit up front that it wasn’t my finest moment. I wanted to really mess with the Duragians…

Enemies of the Dawn Fangs: The Hunters

Van Helsing

The most common adversary for vampires are the hunters.  Regardless of the world that vampires show up in, there are those who have trained to kill them.  Some use magic and others use technology, but they share the same goal.  They want the utter destruction of vampires with no exceptions.  Well, sometimes they make exceptions, but you get the point.  So, what are the types of hunters that the Dawn Fangs can run into?

Trap Hunters

These are people who depend a lot on knowledge and scouting an area.  They will spend weeks studying their targets to find the best time and place for a strike.  Even then, they will do their best to avoid full confrontations until the vampires have been crippled.  Many of them specialize in specific terrain to help them master their gear, but others use more general items.  Casters tend to be in this category a lot as well because they are not known for being very good in a head-to-head fight.

Single Tool Hunters

Typically warriors, they have chosen one weapon or item that can kill a vampire.  After years of training, they have become a master and need nothing else to help them in a hunt.  Because of their focus, these hunters tend to be very aggressive and rarely give up to enemies or logic.  Vampires tend to prefer these enemies because they are the easiest to handle as long as you know they’re coming.  The biggest problem here is that they are helpless if they lose their weapon.  Most only survive a few years while the rest either join a group or branch out to another category.

Multiple Tool Hunters

While not full masters like the previous type, the versatility of these hunters allows them to live longer even on their own.  Similar to how Dawn Fangs are unpredictable because of their powers, these people can change tactics and tools in mid-battle.  They are still at a disadvantage since their weapons can usually be seen, so they only get the element of surprise if they remain unseen.  Still, they can adjust for different situations, which is very important when fighting vampires.

Long Range Hunter

Distance can keep you alive against a vampire even though they move almost faster than the eye can see.  Unfortunately, regular projectiles aren’t very useful, so these hunters use magical gear.  They can also be casters, but they’re more commonly archers with enchanted bows and quivers.  Similar to the Single Tool Hunter, they use one weapon, but they gradually form a collection that they can pick from.  This requires some planning and guesswork to make sure they take the right equipment.

Muscular Hunter

There isn’t much to say about these guys, but they can be surprisingly more effective than you would think.  With or without weapons, they prove to be a danger because they have enhanced their bodies for strength and durability.  Their tactics are simple: Get in close to tear the vampire apart with their bare hands.  Hunters in this category tend to be driven entirely by revenge and bloodlust.  Few of them last more than year too.

Technology Hunters

Specific to gnomes, these are exactly what you think they would be.  Hunters who develop unique tools, which means vampires never know what they’re getting into when they tangle with them.  Well, it’s always safe to assume something will explode even if it isn’t meant to.  Unique among the hunters, some of these gnomes try to get nothing more than samples or entire live samples to discover more about vampires.  These are people who think of it only as a condition and wish to find a cure.

Strength in Numbers

There are many that cross categories or stand out, but one thing that most hunters will agree on is that it is better to work together.  You can find them working with adventurers who have no interest in vampires specifically.  Other times, multiple hunters team up to take on a large number of vampires.  This is when they are extremely dangerous even to beings as strong as Dawn Fangs.

This Week in Indie Publishing

Don’t believe everything you read – e-books are on the rise

With e-books recently being deemed ‘stupid’ by Arnoud Nourry, chief executive of Hachette Livre, and many articles in the last year claiming a ‘plunge’ in e-book sales and a resurgent in print, I think it is time to question exactly where the data for those articles comes from, and to question how much truth there is behind those statements.

It is fantastic that print publishing is seeing a resurgence, but why does it have to be at the expense of e-book publishing? Why are both formats not celebrated together? Surely every sale of a book should be celebrated, as should a general increase in reading on all formats. It seems that some publishers, particularly some of those working at the heads of the larger publishing houses are still eager to see e-books fail, and seem almost gleeful when they…

Enemies of the Dawn Fangs: Priests and Paladins

Yahoo Image Search

Many consider vampires, especially the Dawn Fangs, to be the top of the food chain among the civilized species.  They aren’t as obvious as dragons and not as bestial as trolls, which is why they really stand out.  For all you know, you’re neighbor can be a vampire and you’re being used as a cover to keep them hidden for suspicion.  What would they hide from if they’re considered an ultimate predator?  There are three major dangers for the vampires of Windemere and we’re looking at them this week.

The strangest thing about this topic is that we’re going to be discussing those who would be considered the good guys in most stories.  This is clearest when you start talking about priests and paladins, especially the Duragians.  For those who have been following the blog for a few years or read Legends of Windemere, one of the bigger supporting cast characters was Aedyn Karwyn.  He is a priest of Durag the Sun God, which locks that group into the hero side.  Yet, in War of Nytefall, they appear as enemies to the main characters and take on the role of ‘villains’.  Paladins in general are going to be a continuing problem for Clyde and his friends since those holy warriors aren’t known for restraint or nuance.  People will see these characters threaten the ‘heroes’, die like henchmen, and do things that come off as villainous, but only because we’re seeing it from the target’s side.  Oddly enough, this wasn’t much of a challenge when writing the story, so I hope it isn’t that bad for readers.

While the Duragians are the most common holy enemies of vampires, most priests, priestesses, and paladins go after these creatures.  On the other side, vampires will sometimes go out of their way to hurt these people.  That is rare though because holy magic is one of the biggest banes of the undead.  Their energy is the antithesis to the vampires, so getting struck by their spells is seen as worse than even a high level lightning bolt.  Unclear the power of a caster that hurts the body, the holy magic of a priest or paladin tears at the spirit.  This makes it more difficult to regenerate the damage without a lot of fresh blood.  That’s only with the basic spells.  Duragians have designed hundreds of special spells to handle vampires that range from sun-infused blood that will hurt from the inside to an iron maiden of light.  Some temples even require that their trainees design a new spell for vampire eradication.

For vampires, the favored tactic to surviving holy warriors is to avoid them, especially the paladins.  If you have to fight then do it with the intent to create a chance to escape unless you’re strong enough to win.  Older vampires with more control of their powers will be the ones to fight, but even they are leery about messing the priests and paladins.  All these enemies need is one opening to deliver a powerful spell and that’s if they’re alone.  When in a group of adventurers or fellow holy warriors, the danger is multiplied tenfold.  The vampire would have to get through everyone else to reach the priest before any spells are cast and that’s if they even know the person is there.  The only advantage that vampires have here is that they are about to catch the scent of a priest or paladin.  They won’t know the specific god association, but they’ll know there is danger.

A big question here is if this remains true for Dawn Fangs.  They are alive now, which means they shouldn’t have the same weakness as undead.  Well, this is a yes and no situation.  Their immunity to sunlight gives them a big resistance of Duragian spells, but they can still be hurt by holy magic that isn’t sun-related.  Some Dawn Fangs will have the power to stand against their power, but it won’t be a common ability.  That doesn’t mean spells to take them down won’t be created at some point either.  One thing that will stay true is that healing magic will hurt vampires of all types.  Since this type of magic focuses on repairing damage and removing curses, it would identifier the infection as something that needs to be destroyed.  This damage won’t be anything like the holy attack spells, but it will be a more dependable method of pain that priests can unleash.

I will say that there are some priests who don’t hunt vampires.  They’re more interested in other things and believe everything has a place in natural.  On the other hand, all paladins are out to destroy anything they perceive as evil.  That’s pretty much a requirement for the job, which is why Clyde will always have his hands full with them.
