Creating Fantasy Food

Oops. Forgot to Put a Title Here when I Hit Publish.

So, here we are.  I haven’t seen a lot of movement on War of Nytefall: Lost, which has me worried that my semi-retirement/long pause has done more damage than I initially thought.  Could be paranoia too, but it feels like I get a lot less blog and book traffic because I’m not going to be as productive as I was.  Dropping from 4 books a year to 2 at most is crushing.  Not to mention people might not want to invest time and money into my stories if they think I’m going to pull a ‘Game of Thrones’.  Authors having long delays or not finishing series is a common complaint and fear in fantasy.  Just hoping there’s another answer because I’m already hurting enough due to feeling like I have to give up what I worked so hard to create.  (By the way, there are things going on that I can’t talk about in public, so there are aspects people don’t know.)

Since I didn’t touch any writing this week and probably won’t next week, I can really only talk about other things.  The job interview I had didn’t go well, but I’m looking at it as getting the rust off.  Haven’t done one in 5-6 years, so it wasn’t like I would be at my best here.  Thankfully, I found another path last Friday that I’m working on.  This is actually more appealing to me because I was interested in the field long ago and it makes me feel good after a hard day.  It could put me on a schedule that matches my son’s too.  Not sure I should jinx things and call it an ideal, but I’m definitely feeling better about stepping even partially away from writing with this as my alternative.

The job is Teaching Assistant, which requires that I take 3 workshops and a certification test.  I finished the 2 online workshops this week and have the 3rd divided between the next 2 Mondays.  I take the test at the end of the month, which makes me hope that I can find a position by early or mid-October.  At the very least, I might be able to sign up as a school monitor, which I’ll look into more on Monday or Tuesday.  That’s a foot in the door and I can do that while looking for a TA position.  I’ve already been told about a few, but I can’t go for them until I have the certification and workshops.  Maybe this will lead to me taking night classes for a Masters in Education, but we’ll take this by steps.

With my son having last Monday and Tuesday off from school, I didn’t really do anything to speak of.  The workshops and errands took up most of my time, so I feel like my life is getting too boring for these posts.  Next week is going to be chaotic with me having to get my son from school twice for appointments and Yom Kippur smack in the middle of the week.  This is the day where Jews fast for the day, so I won’t be online that much.  I think because last year I kept jumping onto my blog and Twitter while in a hunger-induced stupor.  My parents are going to be around this year to watch my son, which means I won’t get worn down that quickly.  Beyond all of that, I’ve got two books full of practice tests that I’ll be diving into.  Probably should have given myself more time to study, but I forgot how messy next week is.  That and all I can find are practice tests that are supposedly much harder than the actual test.  Nerves are still twitching though and I’m promising myself pizza for when I’m done with the test.

Kind of going back to the first topic, I feel really bad that I can’t touch my books for the foreseeable future.  Maybe once I finish the test, but the other things going on make me too anxious to touch them.  I can’t even edit War of Nytefall: Rivalry, which kind of drives me nuts.  Mucking around with some ideas that never get off the ground can take the edge off, but it really does feel like I’m losing a part of myself.  The TA path gives me strength and positiveness because I’d been considering teaching ever since I was in college.  I just wasn’t able to double major or get into the Masters program.  So, maybe the positive energy from TA life will bring me back to writing with enough strength that I can do more than blog.  The abysmal sales aren’t helping though.  As usual, I’ve had a lot of people tell me that they have bought the book, but the Amazon numbers don’t match up and now I’m getting off topic.  Guess I’ll always be left wondering what went wrong until I either get an answer or I find a way to achieve the ultimate dream.

So, what’s the plan for next week?

  1. Practice tests!
  2. Take breaks with ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ anime.
  3. Practice tests!
  4. Yom Kippur on Wednesday, which means ‘Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’ all day.
  5. Start scheduling Derailing Bedlam sections for Thursdays.  These will start in November after Raven’s Wrath is done.  Tempted to change the ending of ‘Bedlam’ since I don’t know if I’ll ever get back to Cassidy and Lloyd.  Yet, it might be best to leave it open just in case.  Does making the whole book blog only mean I’m giving up or is it giving them a chance to get exposure?
  6. Other stuff that comes up.
  7. Come up with December post topics.  FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST THINGS!

The Second Person Point Of View Can Captivate Your Readers – by Derek Haines…

Definitely worth a read.

on Just Publishing Advice:

How, when and why you can use the second person point of view

But first, what is point of view, or POV?

There are three basic points of view that define the type of narration used in literature and writing.

They are the first person, second person and third person.

In the first person POV, the narrator uses the pronoun, I or sometimes, We.

The second person POV uses the pronoun, You.

Lost’s 7 Tips to Using Psychic Bunnies . . . Powers

Legion

Bunny and I get to write a post about having psychic powers.  There was a silver-haired lady that wanted to help me, but I didn’t want to share.  I think she had to take a nap anyway.  So, here is what I, Lost the General Princess, suggest you do if you have any type of mental powers.

  1. Listen to the voices, but always have the final say.  Sometimes, they have good ideas and other times they don’t.  Since you’re the one with the body, you have to decide on if you’re going to put in the effort.  It might help to figure out whose mind you’re accidentally listening in on too.  One time, I ended up cooking a bunt cake, but I didn’t have any bunt.  So, I used some bacon.
  2. Stay away from socks.  They are evil and nasty and . . . Oh, I guess this doesn’t have anything to do with psychic powers.  Still, I stand by this.
  3. When taking over someone’s mind, don’t forget where you parked your own body.  I can control my own and somebody else’s because I don’t go too deep, but you could accidentally do an astral jump.  Best to be prepared for the worst.  This is very important for anyone who does possessions.
  4. Always be ready for adults to have naughty thoughts.  These can make you either laugh or feel icky depending on your own naughtiness.  I enjoy stopping these thoughts because it’s rude to think such things when you have company.  Most times, they don’t even notice.  Unless you read their minds during sex and don’t realize it, so then you kill the mood and cause a fight.
  5. Memory wipes are a great way to get out of trouble.  Steal some food?  Memory wipe.  Put a public fountain in the tavern?  Memory wipe.  Accidentally anger an entire temple full of Duragians?  Very big memory wipe.  Just make sure you don’t go back too far or you make a city full of babies.  That’s hard to explain . . . Unless you use more memory wipes.
  6. Telepathy isn’t as one way as you think.  There’s always the chance that your target will catch your thoughts.  It could be caused by a strong will, their own powers, or you got sloppy with the connection.  You don’t have to worry about them taking over your mind unless they’re a powerful psychic, but you might reveal a few embarrassing secrets before you’re done.
  7. I don’t like this number.  Looks like an upside down sock.
  8. Telekinesis is fun!  You can be so lazy with this power.  Grab stuff from across the room or casually throw bad guys around without much effort.  You also can use it on yourself like with making you stronger and tougher.  If you focus enough, you can even fly.  As long as you can move it, your power will work on it.  By the way, be very careful with the flying part because if you don’t lift your entire body, you’ll tear yourself apart.
  9. So, I’ve been told that #2 doesn’t count . . . It’s easier to use your powers on somebody who is sleeping.  They won’t see you coming and they have dreams that you can sneak into.  Just watch out for naughty dreams.  Those are worse than the thoughts.

Leave Your Questions for Lost the Princess General

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Well, Lost has just debuted in War of Nytefall: Lost and people are already asking for more.  She actually tied with Chastity Sullivan for the top spot of the interview requests, but I put her in second only to give the book time to come out.  Still, it’s going to be tough to put out some information here without doing spoilers.  I’m going to try my best, so here we go.

Lost is the newest Dawn Fang to show up and she leaves chaos in her wake.  It isn’t really her fault because she has some trouble focusing and tends to listen to the decrepit bunny that follows her.  Her origin is a mystery to the other Dawn Fangs, but readers will know from the blurbs that Lost is a womb born.  This is a vampire who was born through sex instead of by fang or Clyde’s blood.  How did this happen?  Well, you need to read the book for that information.

The big quest for Lost is that she is looking for her father.  She doesn’t like talking about her mother, but she hints that she know who it is.  As far as her father, she doesn’t quite understand how to figure out who or where he is, so she’s wandering.  With no knowledge of the Dawn Fang culture of secrecy that Clyde has created, Lost is a big threat to Nytefall even though she doesn’t mean to be.  After all, she is very friendly and tries to help when she feels like it.  Sure, she’s terrified of socks and doesn’t hide that she’s a vampire that retains her powers in the sun.  There’s also at least two groups searching for her for various reasons.  Needless to say, Lost is a magnet for trouble even though she tries to behave.

So, leave questions in the comments and she’ll answer them in an October post.  You can ask about growing up as a vampire, her bunny, her thoughts on different subjects, or whatever you think she’ll talk about.  Just be ready for anything because she is known for her tangents.

Lisa Burton

Welcome all you basement alchemists out there. Take a seat you members of secret societies. Have we got a show for you today. You’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio, the only show that brings you the characters from the books you love. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and I have a doozie for you today. “Welcome to the show, Michelangelo.”

“Good day, Lisa Burton.”

“I’ve wanted to get you on the show for a while now.”

“That is my understanding, yes. Carmina Orsini—I believe she has asked you, as well as everyone she likes, to call her Nonna—has been asking me to talk with you. As I have told her repeatedly, I do not have the time. Alas, I also do not have the time to continue arguing with her. So, here I am. Against my better judgment. Because the woman is just… such a difficult woman to…

Paprika’s Poison Provider: No Residue Guaranteed

D&D Plague Doctor

Welcome to our little hole in the wall and here is your complimentary antidote. What does it go to? Well, that’s something you have to figure out on your own. We don’t bother labeling the extras or returns, so enjoy the suspense.  Don’t complain because we aren’t in the business of curing things. We have toxins, poisons, man-made diseases, peanuts, venom, and radioactive substances.  Only one thing on that list requires a waiver for handling and disposal. Now, what are you looking for?

Well, we have packages that range from a single product to a new flavor for every day of the week.  Due to various international laws, we aren’t allowed to sell you more than seven.  The only way to get around this is through fake identities or coming back a year later for more.  I recommend the second option because we have a very serious bouncer and accountant.  They’re the same creature, which is a two-headed dragon that also provides us with our top of the line flesh-eating gas.  Okay, I’ll put that down for one of your choices.

If you’re getting a package, we recommend a good variety.  There are poisons that attack flesh, blood, specific organs, bones, nerves, and muscles.  Some are fast-acting and others take a few days to make sure you can’t be tracked.  By the way, we do request a DNA sample to add to your product.  This means any accidents that result in it being traced to source will only get you in trouble.  Really? We sell poisons and you expect us to be willing to take a hit for our clients?  Now, we can develop a toxin that imitates any disease of your choice.  The common cold isn’t a very popular one, but we can do it.  I’d recommend combining it with something lethal unless the plain is to incapacitate, which we don’t get a lot of these days.

You can pick the other types later . . . Okay, a fiery poison will be discussed later.  I want to talk about delivery system.  Some products can’t be used in all forms, so we need to narrow things down this way.  Needles and grenades are the most common, but you may be interested in the gauntlet.  This is a little on the heavy side, but it has a compartment for each of your chosen toxins.  It fires darts that come out bathed in whatever you have in the main chamber.  We provide a 24-hour customer service call center with no extra charge as well as a quarterly maintenance check.  There’s a weekend class to help you learn how to use it as well.  Okay, it was worth a shot.  Test tubes are the cheapest transport and delivery system.

It looks like you need some extra time to go over the catalog.  Please sit over here . . . Wait . . . Okay, this chair is clean.  If someone comes around asking if you want something to drink then call me over.  You never know when one of our scientists is wandering around looking for a test subject.  The muffins are safe.  Nobody here is evil enough to poison pastries.
