Young, I set out to have a life of adventure and discovery, not one of security and comfort – although those things can certainly can seem appealing when caught in one of life’s more distressing moments. Alone, I’ve crossed much of Europe on foot, I’ve travelled, by bus, train, car or truck throughout North and Central America, Europe and the Sahara. I’ve also lived in unique places — a Hungarian mud house, a Bavarian castle, a Turkish cave dwelling, on a Dutch canal, in a lonely, very haunted stone house on the English moors. I’m presently in a 400-year-old former inn in a small French village.

The Voices in My Head

Yahoo Image Search

Way back in October, I was a guest on Annette Rochelle Aben’s podcast called ‘Tell Me a Story‘.  During the fun and festivities, it was pointed out that I talk about my characters as if they can walk into a room any minute.  This got me thinking about me as an author.  I can’t say this category falls into my process because it isn’t something that always leads to writing.  All I can say is that this is me and always has been.

Explaining this is the hardest part because I always get people who jump in to interrupt for one reason or another.  Some try to logic it to the point where it doesn’t feel special and others try to turn the conversation to their own voices.  It kind of irks me because I really haven’t met anyone who fully captures what goes on in my head.  Then again, I can’t say that I can find the correct words to bring the proper life to the idea.  Saying that I have long conversations with my characters in my head, that I imagine being them, or they act up during writing isn’t unique.  All authors get that.  Yet, I feel that there is more to that like these beings are living in my mind and keep poking their head into my space to see if I need anything.  Every now and again, they’re a physical presence on my senses or an influence on my behavior.  Almost like there’s a symbiosis where I give them life and they give me comfort or strength?

This post isn’t going well at all because I can’t fully explain how I feel.  Part of it could stem from me being rather solitary when I was younger.  I had friends that I hung out with, but I spent a lot of time sitting in my room with my characters.  During the years that I was working non-writing jobs, I’d take every opportunity to outline or jot down ideas.  This might have caused me to maintain some connection to my imagination, which created an open channel to that part of my mind.  Still, it doesn’t really explain why I default to talking about Luke Callindor like he’s my trouble-making friend instead of a character in my stories.  Could it be that I’ve given him so many facets that he pretty much is alive to me?  Is it possible for an author to dream something up in such personal detail that they create a ‘ghost’ that haunts them to some extent?

Another reason for me wondering about this is because of my recent stress and life upheaval.  I’ve tried to talk about this before and got a lot of well wishes and support in that I’ll be back to writing.  Yet, one key point keeps getting missed.  I don’t really hear the voices like I used to.  It isn’t like a wall has come up because I can’t even sense that they are still in my head.  I’ve poked around to find specters and shadows, but it’s become rare that they turn up.  (Writing this in November, so maybe this will change by the time it goes live, but work with me.)  Cassidy and Lloyd became more vivid when I was editing Derailing Bedlam, but there was a sense that I was reading something written by someone else.  They would fade away almost as soon as I stopped instead of sticking around for an hour to chat.  It was like an automatic off switch that I never had before because I never feared having an imagination running wild until I needed it to become a honed tool.

Part of me fears that by packing away the notebooks, announcing a semi-retirement, and putting a stake in what little momentum I had has been perceived as betrayal.  My characters were always comfort zones, but some people have pointed at them as the causes of my life being ‘bad’.  Perhaps they’ve gone away out of guilt for causing me trouble even though they really didn’t do anything wrong.  It doesn’t help that very few people around this side of the computer really try to understand how I work.  Everyone thinks I can just turn the author side back on whenever I want or that I can hang out with my characters regardless of my mood.  Honestly, I’m getting really worn down trying to explain myself to people who don’t seem interested in understanding.  Unlike the voices in my head, they don’t really like what I am and work to make sure I never think I’m special or talented like I was beginning to feel a few years back.  Eh, this is getting off topic, but this is another reasons my internal friends might be silent.

I’m just going to open the floor with a few questions.  Do other authors talk about their characters like they’re physical beings?  What do you do when those close to you seem to minimize your identity as an author?  Have you ever had a time where the voices disappeared and you feared that they would never return?

2018 Top 5: #4- The Art of Bantering: Not as Easy as You Think

This post originally went up on January 15th, 2018.

What exactly is banter these days?  I know the official definition is a ‘playful or friendly exchange of teasing remarks’.  Not exactly like what you see in one of the above examples, but I keep seeing examples of banter that ignores the playful or friendly part.  Since comedy/humor is subjective, this is going to be a tough topic to write about.  I know what I believe might not be shared by others, so I’m going to try my best to keep it within the mechanic of banter and what I always thought it was.

Keep in mind that I grew up with The Marx Brothers, who excelled at cutting remarks and comedic banter.  That tends to be my baseline, which was expanded by me reading older Spider-Man comics where he flung insults.  Now, the superhero stuff tends to be labeled as banter even if there’s no back and forth.  I keep running into people saying that they love Deadpool’s banter . . . He’s usually just cracking jokes and insulting enemies.  It’s more antagonizing a foe in a similar vein to Spider-Man, but that doesn’t always fall into the banter category.  So, what do I think you need for banter?

As stated in the definition, there’s supposed to be a friendly and playful aspect to banter.  You don’t typically get this between enemies.  Savage insults getting hurled faster than bullets isn’t really banter due to the emotions.  The audience might be having fun, but it’s the participants that denote banter.  They have to be the playful and friendly ones.  For example, Fritz Warrenberg and Nimby would get into back-and-forth insults at times and that would be banter because they were being playful.  Luke Callindor and the Lich doing the same isn’t the same because they’re trying to hurt each other.  Banter is supposed to be something that friends do and is easily shrugged off because it was ‘done in good fun’.

I’ve seen a lot of people mistake puns for banter as well.  That can be part of it, but a character spitting out jokes isn’t bantering.  Not really sure of the term, but it’s missing an important aspect to be banter.  That would be somebody replying.  This is a two or more person comedy because you need responses to keep the whole thing going.  If a person is flinging insults and jokes without anything going back to them then they’re probably the comic relief.  Hey, I think I remember the term I was thinking of.  Anyway, you can have back-and-forth puns, but it’s that first part that’s necessary for true banter.

This is why I mentioned in the title that banter is harder than people think.  Not everything funny falls into this category, especially when you consider that comedy is as varied as music and movies.  There are genres of comedy just like every other type of entertainment.  Banter is a style and technique that can be used in any of them, but that doesn’t mean it’s always the answer.  In fact, it shouldn’t be the only one used or it loses it’s appeal.  Kind of like how horror movies and video games overdid jump scares a while back, you can eliminate the appeal of banter by overusing it or extending the definition to ridiculous lengths.  This is the challenge: You need to know what a technique really is before you try to use it or say you’re using it.

If I had to give a tip to how to use or learn about banter, I would suggest looking at older comedies.  Not as far back as the Marx Brothers, but I remember a lot of good banter from Eddie Murphy, Gene Wilder, and Robin Williams movies.  Many times, a sharp and quick wit leads to banter because you need to be fast with the responses.  There’s that comfort level between participants that allows banter to move at a fast pace to give it a the natural playfulness.  This also requires that you have a deep understanding of the characters and their relationship when you do it in your own works.  Are they close friends that can get away with such comments?  Do they have enough knowledge of each other to bounce off each other?  Are they really friends or merely coworkers/partners with nothing more than a working relationship?  Weird question at the end, but I’ve seen plenty of ‘banter’ that comes from two characters that show no sign of friendship and the exchange ends up being out of place.  Comedy can’t be forced.

What do you think of banter?  Do you think it’s being either overused or simply being used to define witty comedy in general?  Do you have a favorite banter example?

Bookful, an AR Book App

Augmented Reality (AR) is probably best known from Pokemon GO, a popular game that had millions of players walking the streets staring at their phones, looking for elusive, virtual beasts. Since these beasts could appear pretty much anywhere, from the White House gym to hospital delivery rooms, this generated much publicity and blasted AR into the forefront of new technologies.

So, it’s nice to see people using AR for something less distracting. In fact, I recently came across Bookful, a book app that shows the direction books may take in the near future. Even though I still have to take the plunge into the world of audiobooks, I’m already drooling at the prospect of converting books like Musiville and Runaway Smile into an app like this!

Bookful uses AR to enhance the real-life environment by adding computer-generated objects into your existing surroundings. In simpler terms…

Goal Post: Trying to Get Back Into the Writing Saddle

Do you know when the last time I wrote anything new was?

Raven’s Dawn in July.

I don’t even know if I can truly count that since it was the finale of a blog story that I never had that much faith in.  The last time I wrote anything new and central to my heart was War of Nytefall: Rivalry in June.  That’s 2018 and I haven’t been able to muster the time and ability to do anything since then.  For someone who hasn’t had crippling writer’s block before, this is disconcerting.  I’ve had challenges that I would be able to think through, but this is the first time I’ve hit a point where I can only stare at the page or became too anxious to even get that far.  I’m going to change from disconcerting to frustrating.  It’s like I’m stuck in a body that won’t work or I’ve got an ice pick in my brain that I can’t get out.

Many people have given advice, which usually boils down to ‘give it time and this shall pass’.  The thing is that the situations that have caused this are still going on and might not finish until the summer if even then.  Since I plan on working during the summer too, I wouldn’t get another shot to write until the Fall.  Besides, I’ve given this issue 6 months of waiting and I’ve shed plenty of tears about it.  Working as a TA has helped immensely with my confidence and making me feel alive.  I love this job and keep looking for ways to reach the next level.  One year of a experience and I can be a TA Level 3.  There might be a pathway to a teacher’s certificate using the Educator Preparation program I completed in Florida, which means I can be a substitute as well.  At the very least, it can help me find an online only Masters program that I can do throughout the next 2-4 years.  All of this takes work, but I’ll admit that I miss writing.  A lot even if it’s not going to be the career.  So, where has waiting gotten me?

Nowhere.  Sorry to everyone who told me to be patient, but it feels like waiting is only going to make this worse.  My situation hasn’t improved outside of working, but I need to get that other side of me back.  Been keeping a notebook in my satchel that I haven’t been able to pull out more than once and I didn’t get very far.  That means I need to hook my imagination up to a car battery and give it some violent jolts.  It might be a clunky start and editing War of Nytefall: Rivalry took some rust off, but not enough to shake everything loose.  I have that project moving along with the blurbs done and cover art getting started.  All of the hype blurbs going up to April 5th have been scheduled as well.  That means I need to look at the future the same way I’m doing with teaching. It doesn’t matter if my books take off like a rocket anymore.  I just want to write them and put them out there.  Well, I still want to make enough money to pay the cellphone bill every month, which is going to be a strange transition.

NORMAL LIFE STUFF AHEAD!  My week began with my phone dying and forcing me to get another one.  This thing is bigger than my last one and can’t fit in the side pockets of my messenger bag/satchel.  I don’t know where to get another one too because this was bought at an anime store.  Yeah, I’m a teacher, but I’d like to get one that has some type of character or image on it.  The problem is that there are no stores that I can think of that would sell such a thing.  Amazon is a risk because I can’t get a good idea of the size to carry all the things I have.  Rather not go for a backpack since that makes me look far too much like a student and I can’t access it on the move.  Tried ‘Hot Topic’ and ‘Spencers Gifts’ at the mall on a whim, but got nowhere.  Maybe Barnes & Nobles since they have manga there?  Anybody know of a place?

This coming week should be a little easier than the previous one, but then comes a 3-day weekend and midterms week.  I have to find out what I’m going to do during those days since my lack of a teaching certificate might mean that I can’t proctor tests.  Although, I don’t know if TA’s do that anyway. This is another big reason I want that certification because I want to help out more.  Once the student I help is done with the test and heading home, I need to be somewhere.  I’m sure to find out next week since I plan on asking.  Guess I got back to the teaching thing.

Unfortunately, my blog wandering has really stalled out.  I have 30 minutes in the morning to get blog, twitter, and email done or I won’t get to it again until maybe noon or, most likely, 3PM.  That’s if I don’t have anything else.  So, I’ve been trying to do my best and share promos that I find.  Have to admit that I’m drawn more to catchy titles and posts that aren’t reblogs.  I’m on my phone too, so it’s hard to read long posts . . . He says while writing one.  Let’s get on to the goals:

  1. Start watching ‘Daredevil’ on Netflix.  Had 5 people tell me that I really should, so I can take the universal hint.  My main goal got a little wrecked anyway.
  2. Write an outline for War of Nytefall: Eradication.  I was going to start writing this book, but then I read the outline.  Not sure what I was thinking and I can’t figure out where all of the extra notes go.  This requires a rewrite, which will take at least today once I finish errands.
  3. Relax a bit more and try to get more sleep.
  4. Settle into an evening biking schedule.
  5. Possibly write a few scenes of War of Nytefall: Eradication
  6. Need to buy some more work shoes.
  7. Stop writing this post and get ready for my son’s gymnastics show in an hour.

Ode to the Collecting Hero

Perseus

A quest from long ago
Search the world
To find the weapons
That will save the day
And bring peace to all
*
Never that simple
With pieces lost
And monsters on the path
Strength is gained
From such a simple hunt
*
The story has remained
Becoming more hands on
The plot of many games
And episodes of toons
Where repetition is allowed
*
Do we collect in real life?
Achieve the degrees
To get the proper job
To gain the house and life
That will stabilize our world

(Okay, this really isn’t an ode.  I think.  Really shouldn’t have made the title before writing the poem.  Oops.)
