Are Dawn Fangs Alive, Dead, or Undead?

Yahoo Image Search

Check out War of Nytefall: Rivalry!  It doesn’t have the answer to this question, but you will learn more about Dawn Fangs.  So, the question is fairly straightforward.  Are they alive, dead, or undead?  That’s actually not as easy to answer as I thought, but it might just be semantics.  Let me touch on each of the three categories:

Dead?

No.  They are still walking around.  Not even sure why people ask this, but I guess they mean undead.  Some Dawn Fangs are dead though.  Mostly because Clyde killed them rather brutally.

Alive

We’ll jump to the other side of the fence here.  Dawn Fangs do possess many qualities of being alive.  They eat, have pulses, and can produce sexually.  It’s mostly the first two that are important in defining them as alive.  Yet, they can still survive without breathing and holy magic hurts them.  They can go without much sleep too.  While I am starting to turn away from this idea, I do know that they are very close.  One could say they are immortals like Dariana in Legends of Windemere. She is still considered alive regardless of how hard it is to kill her.  Unfortunately, there is another factor that can put them into the third category.

Undead

For those that don’t know the term, undead is a category of monsters where they have died and been reanimated.  Zombies, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, ghouls, and every other rotting corpse creature falls into this group.  Dawn Fangs are decaying beasts and they have pulses, but they do have something in common with these examples.  They have died and been reanimated.  Even those who were born start out as a corpse and need blood to come back to life.  This short part of a Dawn Fang’s creation does make them a walking corpse, which means they shouldn’t be considered ‘Alive’.  At least not by fantasy standards since one would then have to wonder about real people who died for any length of time.  Let’s stick with fiction here.

My Personal Take

I know people might categorize my creations differently, so I can only say what I tend to see them as.  Dawn Fangs, to me, are a bridge between the Living and the Undead.  They possess traits of both categories such as pulses and being reanimated.  They can eat food and blood.  They can create new members through sex or biting.  So, I think they can be in the middle, which works for Clyde’s goals.  He wants to prove that Dawn Fangs can live among mortals, which means he wants these undead-like beings to prove that they are similar to the true living.  Again, we’re probably looking at semantics and personal opinions here.  Definitely not an easy question for me to answer.

How to use IFTTT (If This, Then That) with Twitter

Harmony Kent's avatarStory Empire

Hello SErs! Harmony here. With all the recent changes to Twitter’s tweeting and auto-tweet rules, I thought it might be useful to talk about how we can use the IFTTT platform to help us out a little.

I used to subscribe to Roundteam, which took care of a lot of my retweets for me, and the monthly fee was reasonable. Sadly, they are shutting their doors and cite Twitter for this. I had paid until August this year, and lost my subscription late last year with no refund, so I’m not too pleased about that. The other issue, of course, was still wanting to retweet people without having to spend 24/7 at the computer.

All the other retweet services I have found are both limited and expensive. Basically, twitter doesn’t want us to automate anything, and this is limiting any company/platform offering such a service.

So, what to do?

While…

Teaser Tuesday: Master Criminals in Action #vampires #fantasy

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Here’s a fun excerpt from War of Nytefall: Rivalry, which is available on Amazon.  I was originally going to do this the other way around, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity for humor.  I don’t think Clyde would either, which is why this makes sense to me.  He enjoys getting rises out of people, especially since he can’t find a good fight.  Enjoy and get your own copy for the whole story.

Tuesday – Anything Possible – A Story

John W. Howell's avatarFiction Favorites

Boss

Since Keith Channing is off buying a house in England and does not have a prompt this week, I thought I would tell you a story. I hope you like it.

The wish by John W. Howell © 2019

This is a fable of sorts. Yes, it begins with once upon a time but is a little different from most. You see the time was yesterday. Here’s what happened. This guy whose name was Mortimer was walking on the beach.  He was taking in the salt air and enjoying the sand between his toes. Mort did not have a care in the world. He had long ago made peace with the fact that he was an ordinary man. He no longer made any pretense about working hard and getting rewarded for doing so. You see, old Mort had worked hard his whole life and in his mind never got a thing…

Why Do Dawn Fangs Eat Food?

Yahoo Image Search

War of Nytefall: Rivalry has a bunch of celebrations and feasts.  That isn’t really a spoiler since I’m not say the who, why, and finale to those events.  Yet, it opens the door for a question that I’ve been asked a few times.  People expect vampires to drink blood, but you tend to throw many off when those same vampires are having a slice of pizza or a mug of beer.  The concept of these monsters eating human food and not getting sick gets a fairly strong reaction.  Probably see some in the comments.  So, why and how did I give this ability to Dawn Fangs?

First, I will make it clear that only Dawn Fangs can eat mortal food.  Old-world vampires can only ingest and get energy from blood.  They can get slightly around that by adding blood to a recipe, but that really only works with drinks.  Eating a steak with blood on it will still cause digestive issues that can really only be solved by slitting open their bellies and removing the meal.  Dawn Fangs don’t have to worry about that. In fact, they tend to overindulge since they have insane metabolisms when it comes to non-blood food.  Many newly turned Dawn Fangs will stuff themselves silly in an attempt to see how much they can it before they get sick.  That or they’re thrown out of the tavern.  So, eating has become a big part of Dawn Fang life because it’s a joyous activity that the older ones thought they would never be able to do again.

I was on the fence about if I would grant any benefits to this beyond me being able to write eating scenes.  For some reason, I have my characters eat and drink a lot, especially when they’re talking in a group.  Anyway, I wasn’t sure how complicated I wanted to get with the blood vs food issue.  Blood became less important when I decided that Dawn Fangs have working hearts, which means they can create and pump their own blood.  There are times where it feels like they drink it out of habit, but it definitely gives them a bigger power boost.  This way, they don’t run out of it when fighting or doing anything extraneous.  So, blood is still the main fuel of the Dawn Fangs.

Food is different because it gives them energy that they can burn through faster and more often.  The nourishment that they get from food goes primarily to their brains.  It creates pleasure that keeps them calm, but also gives them a subconscious sense of being more than monsters.  Dawn Fangs have strong emotions that can get out of hand, especially if they are struggling to figure out their place in the world.  Only drinking blood makes them feel like a monster, but food has a big cultural impact.  Friends talk over meals, families cook together, a favorite drink after a hard day, and so many other things revolve around even a snack.  The psychological impact is probably bigger and more important than the energy they gain.

So, that’s how it works, so why did I do it besides my love of eating scenes?  That’s really it . . . buy a copy of War of Nytefall: Rivalry . . . Oh, I guess that’s not a good enough answer.  Seriously, I’ve actually had the Dawn Fangs eating food thing since their earliest incarnation.  This is back when Clyde and his friends operated off of Earth with no connection to other series.  Originally, it was just a quirk that I gave to him and his friends because they were always hanging around mortals.  The scenes I tested them with felt strange with them hanging around a restaurant and not having food.  Then, Titus drank a beer when I wasn’t looking and that was basically it.  Figured that it was better to add this quirk instead of risking more screw ups when I was writing hungry.  Not the most amazing answers, but it led to an important decision later on.

Once Clyde and the other Dawn Fangs came over to Windemere, I looked at what I had and focused a bit more on the eating part.  Immunity to sunlight and eating were the only two non-vampire abilities that they really had.  The second one is what drew me to the idea of Dawn Fangs being more like mortals with heartbeats and later the ability to sexually reproduce.  After that, I came up with the idea of Clyde wanting his people to integrate with mortal society.  They had the skills and abilities to blend in with their neighbors, so why wouldn’t they do it?  Of course, it could be seen as a predatory trick, but I liked the idea of them showing they could be peaceful.  It ran very contrary to Clyde’s violent nature and demonstrated how much he’s fighting against it.  And the idea started with the eating of food.

By the way, I’ve found out that vampires eating food either for energy or with no effect has been done before.  So, there is a history to it.  What do you think about this quirk?  What food would be your first one if you were a vampire who could suddenly eat again?

Toying with Twitter: A Week of Testing

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

First, check out War of Nytefall: Rivalry.  Now on to the topic at hand.

Last weekend, I mentioned that I was getting frustrated with Twitter.  There doesn’t seem to be any payoff to using it.  So, I did a little goofing off this week when I could.  Some was even on purpose.  I’m just going to put up my points:

  1. Twitter feeds are so clogged that it is hard to find promos.  Within seconds, I would see something I wanted to retweet has disappeared and I’m looking at either porn, politics, gibberish, or a trending comment.  You have to check constantly or specifically go to a person’s page to check them out.  This means only doing 1 unpinned tweet a day won’t get you very far.  Your own retweets to get attention will drown the tweet.
  2. My War of Nytefall: Rivalry tweets ended up not having an Amazon page preview.  I put the picture on the first one after I noticed, but I did the second through Hootsuite and rushed it.  So, I didn’t see where the picture went.  I decided to see how this one does with no image.  It was terrible.  Think it got into the 40’s by the next morning and I’m usually looking at 90’s and low 100’s.  Images are essential!
  3. Changing out the pinned post every day helps give regulars something to share and revives you in the feed.  Yet, it’s not easy to figure out what to do to keep things fresh if you’re promoting a book.  I left a pinned post up and saw things trickle in.  The initial day was busy and then it was a constant 5-6 every few years.  It would go up when I had time to retweet other authors.
  4. This means that shares are mostly coming from authors who are either returning the favor or wanting you to return the favor.  Nobody seems to really be buying if they don’t know the other author.  This is why blogging is a better platform because you can have better interactions.
  5. Too many people want to have public conversations that border on an argument.  I’m not saying this happened to me.  Just something I saw.

I didn’t get to test out the ‘Twitter question’ idea.  That will be for next weekend when I have more time.  What I’m going to try this week is set up one pinned post on Sunday and let it ride for the week.  Doubt this will get sales, but it will keep me active enough to retain some presence.  You never know when Twitter will come in handy.  Other authors get a lot out of it, so you don’t want to cut them off.

People talked about it last Saturday, but I’ll ask again.  What do you think of Twitter lately?  What kind of questions should be asked?  (I’m thinking author and silly.)

Goal Post: Heading Towards Spring Break

First, check out War of Nytefall: Rivalry if you haven’t already and are interested in a fantasy vampire tale.  There’s action, adventure, monsters, love, anger, flying bunnies, and tons of gemstones.  Just look at the cover:

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

This week was really busy.  Spring Break starts on Thursday, so a lot of gearing up for that has been going on.  My birthday was Tuesday, which involved going out with my family to Red Robin.  That was really the only relaxing point beyond going to a bar with a friend last night for a late birthday outing.  We watched the NY Islanders win their game, which was really cool.  Not that into hockey, but it’s nice to see a local team winning, especially the Islanders.  I’m really just plopping the events in one paragraph here.  Is there any way to stretch this stuff out?

Not really because this week saw me racing at breakneck speeds.  I barely had any time to think and write beyond a few blog posts for May.  I managed to make a list of June topics at least, which might be a focus for a bit.  It’s really hard to do book writing during the week because there’s always something going on at night.  By the time I get home and my son to bed, it’s late and I’m tired.  The blog posts are all I can manage, especially since I’m in the midst of a point where a lot of the shows I watch are on.  Many of them are ending, so I feel like sticking with them.  That really isn’t much of an excuse.  Well, it isn’t because it’s the tiredness.  Having only 2-2.5 hours to write a chapter section makes me feel rushed and sloppy.

The chaos of my life is still going strong too.  That life event has taken up a lot of my time this week and will probably do so for the rest of the month.  Depends on how if things reach a stability point.  This thing is also making it hard to write.  To create characters with strength and optimism and love is difficult when you feel like you’ve been stomped into the mud.  The action and humor is still possible, but War of Nytefall: Eradication is going to take a while.  My hope is to finish it before the summer starts because my summer job goes 9-5 with a lot of preparations.  I’m only going to be able to work on the special project since that has small sections and isn’t exactly fiction.  Maybe Spring Break will help and get me closer to my goal.  I have 10 chapters to go and might be able to get 3 done during that period.  4 if I’m lucky.

Really wish I had more to talk about, but I’ve just been busy.  The job is going great and I’m having fun there.  Hoping to introduce my son to the original ‘Ghostbusters’ movie today.  If he can get through that one without a problem then that opens the door for other movies like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Shazam’.  I was younger than him when I watched ‘Ghostbusters’ on TV, so I have faith in him.  The weather is pretty gross too, so we can’t do anything outside.  Going to try for some book writing tonight since I can sleep in tomorrow.

The only other thing I’m doing is making my way through the Netflix Marvel shows.  A friend gave me the order to watch them and I just finished season 1 of ‘Luke Cage’.  I’m up to ‘Iron Fist’ now and I’m hoping it’s better than some friends have said.  Guess we’ll see about that since I might start it tonight.  Time will tell.

So, what are the goals for the week?

  1. Make it to Spring Break.
  2. Work a little on War of Nytefall: Eradication
  3. Continue scheduling blog posts.
  4. Get back on the exercise bike at some point.
  5. Watch ‘Ghostbusters’.
  6. Sleep, eat, and laundry.
  7. Organize the special project.
  8. Handle more of the life event.
  9. Start watching ‘Iron Fist’.

Taming the Void Monsters: A Few Tips from Mab

Final Fantasy Bahamut

Hi . . . I’m Mab and I’ve been asked to explain why the monsters of the darkness don’t make a meal out of me.  They tried at first, but now most of them leave me alone.  Those that approach are looking for food or attention, so they’ve become my pets.  Nothing like a dog or hamster, but like a stray cat that wanders over for a snack before heading back into the wild.  So, what are my secrets?  Guess there’s no harm in sharing since none of you can get in here.

  1. When I first arrived, I went rushing about to avoid getting eaten.  This is the natural reaction one should have to be in a realm where there’s no ground, thousands of hungry monsters, and you can see clearly regardless of it being a world of shadows.  It’s disorienting and you need to survive for a bit to calm down.  Once you get your bearings, I suggest killing the most aggressive monster.  This demonstrates that you’re a threat and, if the beast is a big one, creates enough food to distract the others and give you time to find a way out.  You might have to kill a monster every time you show up for a few weeks, but that’s only if you spend a lot of time in there.
  2. After you’ve mastered the basics of moving around in The Void, you need to spend extra time in there.  This makes you part of the environment and the monsters get used to seeing you there.  More importantly, you get an idea of which ones are friendly and which ones need some roughing up to keep in line.  Eventually, you will develop some kind of pack of loyal creatures that can follow orders and keep others in line.  This tip is simply making yourself the alpha of the world.  It takes time and patience and probably more killing, but you can also make due with some fights that only result in a light maiming.  You can win points with these monsters if you tend to their wounds too.
  3. Once you’re no longer on the menu, it helps to serve up a few dishes.  You don’t have to show up and present the meals that often.  These monsters are pretty smart and can catch your scent on whatever you send into The Void.  They become pretty good at knowing who is a friend and who is food too.  Oh, I probably should explain that I simply grab some enemies and toss them into the shadows or I drag them in or I shove them in.  The point is that I feed people who attack or annoy me to my pets without having to go into The Void myself.  Like any living thing, they enjoy getting an easy meal and will stick to the source.  Sometimes being very protective, which can cause some issues when I need to travel fast.
  4. I mentioned these monsters knowing who is friend and who is food.  The way I make them aware of who not to eat is by maintaining physical contact with my guests.  If I’m holding onto the person or they are holding onto me with no signs of struggling then they’re safe.  After a while, I can let my companions float a little on their own, but I have to stay nearby.  It takes a long time and it’s perfect because not every monster sees you during every visit.  The only person they’ve never considered taking a bite out of is Clyde, but he’s a special case.  Like an animal, they can sense when something is too dangerous to mess with.
  5. Check out my adventure in War of Nytefall: Rivalry.  This isn’t a way to tame the Void monsters, but it can show you some of my tricks in action.  Also, it would make them very happy.
