The Fall of ‘Footsteps’

X-Babies

As I was looking through my future ideas, I kept running into a set of notes that came at the end of all the big series.  These were called ‘Footsteps’ and stemmed from a point when I was going to have the children of various champions from Legends of Windemere go on an adventure.  I ended up doing this with other stories and it would range from a single book to a trilogy.  Usually, they ended up facing a villain or problem stemming from the original tales.  So, what happened here?

Obviously, I’m asking the question because this concept has become fairly defunct right now.  I still look at it and wonder if it can be done, but then I remember that I create a few problems with it.  During the times when I fell out of sorts with the concept, I did my cannibalism thing, so the following happened:

  1. Children of various champions ended up in other series, which made their debut stories rather moot.
  2. I took adventure ideas I liked and gave them to Sin or Darwin . . . Oops.
  3. I rewrote some heroes in a way that they wouldn’t have kids in the first place.
  4. Began making children for characters simply to give them a connection.  Seriously, I ended up having one hero gain two kids without having any type of love life or interest in such things.  This was a big hint that I may have gone too far.

It is kind of a shame that I can’t or won’t go through this idea.  The possibility of a hero’s child taking up their mantle sounds like a winner.  Acts as a continuation of the series that people loved without harming what came before.  Well, there’s less of a chance since you aren’t mucking around with too much and can’t have the parents be too involved.  That was another issue I struck because I had trouble imagining some of the champions letting their kids run off alone.  They had the power and abilities to haul them back fairly easily, which would be a plot hole in my mind.  Although, I was probably grabbing at excuses not to do this when I considered this problem.

Well, I ever do a ‘Footsteps’ story?  Doubt it because I’ve moved all the juicy parts away like I said.  If anything, I shouldn’t entertain the urge to revisit the past in this way because then I’ll ignore the future.  There are tons of heroes and villains who have yet to be introduced to the world.  It’s not fair to them if I hang around a handful of lineages that have really run their course.

Immortal Wars: The Summoning Part 14 #fiction #throwback

(Previously on Immortal Wars.)

(DEAR GOD!  Why was this section so long!?  I’m so sorry!)

Disclaimer: Immortal Wars was the book I came up with and wrote in high school.  I hadn’t even hit college by the time I wrote the first two books.  That means I hadn’t developed my style yet, wasn’t good at self-editing, and the story was fairly basic. So, you’ve been warned that this is the ultimate author throwback segment for my blog and will show my author origins.  FYI-  I put the first book (The Summoning) through a Print-on-Demand publisher and the second one (Light, Blood, & Tears) never saw the light of day.  Enjoy!

When the three-hour game is finally over the living players have been changed in more ways than one.  Ed is the only one who is wearing the clothes that he had arrived in.  Both Kelly and Delila are wearing weird outfits that SEAS had specially made for them.  These are their guardian uniforms that are made out of a thin, flexible material called Glebnokian steel.  This material is tougher than titanium, but feels like cotton.  It can also absorb any colored water and stay as that color until the material is destroyed.

Kelly returned to the others in a crimson bodysuit that has ivory lines going down the sides and a bare midriff.  A pair of shimmering, black gloves and matching high heel boots perfectly cover both her hands and her feet.  Kelly’s new name is Miracle because she has the power to form objects called solid illusions.  These illusions can be touched as if they were real, but disappear after something hits them very hard.

Delila’s outfit is not as skin-tight as Kelly’s and is a dark forest green.  Her gorgeous bodysuit has a short skirt and a sleeveless top, which has a picture of a churning whirlpool on her chest.  The Neptune guardian’s elbow-length gloves are tipped with small claws and each of her boots has a finger-length, blade on the outer side of each boot.  Delila is now called Hydrana since her birthright power is to create and control water in any of its three phases.  Just like she had always dreamed of when she was a child.

“This is so much fun.  I was born to have this kind of power at my fingertips,” mentions Hydrana as she picks up an empty cup and pours cold water into it.  The odd thing about this very common activity is that the cool water comes from her gloved fingers instead of a sink or a glass pitcher.

“I know exactly what you mean, Hydrana.  My powers can let me do just about anything I want,” claims Miracle as she sits back in a shocking pink chair that had appeared out of nowhere.  Hydrana walks behind Miracle and kicks the chair for no apparent reason.  The chair vanishes and Miracle falls on the hard, carpeted floor with a resounding thud.

“What the hell was that for?” yells Miracle from the floor.

“No reason.”

“Fine.  That’s my excuse for filleting you like a salmon.”  Miracle suddenly creates a long, pink sledgehammer with a cerated edge and is about to hit Hydrana.  Before it hits, an apple hits the hammer and causes it to disappear.  Both of the women turn to see Ed staring at them with another apple in his hand.

“Try to behave yourself, Kelly.  Just ignore the stubborn little brat,” yawns Ed who is sitting alone at the bar.

“No problem.  And the name is Miracle.  Not Kelly.  Okay?”

“Yeah.  Right.  Anything you say, gorgeous.”

“I wonder what you’re going to get, Blondie.  I seriously doubt any of it will be better than my powers.  You can’t possibly defeat one who can control any of the elements,” remarks Hydrana as she leans back in her own chair.

“I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see.”

Suddenly, the game room’s door opens and Solix walks in with Steve, who has an outfit that looks as impressive as the other uniforms.  His uniform is dark blue with orange lightning streaks mimicking his ribcage and a yellow belt around his waist.  He also has a glistening black cloak, which makes him look like a darker, and much cooler, version of Solix.

“The new Earth guardian is now ready for battle.  Steve’s codename is Infinity and his powers are . . . ,” says Solix.

“I can move things with my mind and change into a huge bird.  I might be able to move my own body and send out telekinetic energy blasts.  Nobody’s sure what the bird can do, but doesn’t that sound cool?” interrupts Infinity.

“Thank you for cutting me off.  The thunderbird form is not one of your true birthright powers, but it still showed up on the ability scanner.  SEAS and I will just have to look more into it.  Now, Mr. Slane.  SEAS has taken it upon himself to find out your birthright powers and make your guardian uniform without my knowledge and permission.  In other words, you went behind my back for some reason.”

“As long as it’s done.  What powers do I have?”

“Put on your uniform and I will explain.  There is a small locker room behind that silver door.  Just don’t use the shower because it has been spitting out magma for some reason.  Here is your uniform,” says Solix as he throws a gray box at Ed and points toward a small door next to the bar.  The young man quickly walks into the next room and leaves the others waiting in suspense.

“I can’t wait for him to finish.  Can you tell me what power he has?  Just whisper it to me and I’ll act surprised when you mention it.  I really want to know!” exclaims Miracle after a quick minute of waiting.

“Calm down.   At least let him be here to find out,” whispers Infinity, who has taken off his cloak’s hood.

“How do I look?” asks Ed as he walks back into the room.  His uniform is made of the same material as the others’ glossy outfits.  He has a black pair of pants and a black v-neck shirt that are extremely flexible and skin-tight, so he can do acrobatic maneuvers with super-human ease.  Around his waist is a white belt that has a picture of a silver coin on it and on his head is a dark blue headband that is hidden by his long, blond hair.  Blood red boots, that look like they’re too big for him, cover Ed’s feet.

“Very nice.  But I think the boots are way too big.  They make you look like an evil circus clown.  That ruins the whole cool and threatening effect,” answers Miracle.  A beam of golden energy bursts from a ceiling tile and makes the oversized boots shrink to the right size before anyone else can say anything about it.

“I am terribly sorry about that mistake.  I promise that it will not happen again,” explains the computer.

“It better not.  Now, Fate.  Your birthright powers are both very interesting and very . . . baffling,” says Solix.

“Wait.  Hit the rewind button.  What did you just call me?  Fate?  That sounds rather wimpy to me.  How about the name Stalker or Ace?  Anything, but Fate.”

“Act your age, Mars guardian.  That is the codename you will have for all eternity.  So get used to it.  It was given to you because you have the birthright power to bestow good luck on either yourself or anyone you can see.  This power has even done something very remarkable to your genes.”

“What do you mean by that?  His jeans?” asks Hydrana.

“Please tell me that you’re kidding, Hydrana.  His genetic makeup is what I am talking about.  SEAS has found that he has a natural immunity to some of the magical weapons that our enemies have at their disposal.  I don’t know which of the weapons exactly, but that is a valuable ability for him to have.  Aside from those birthright powers, you are the fastest and most agile of the new recruits.  Hydrana and Infinity are slightly stronger than you are and Miracle will turn into the smartest after a few weeks of personal tutoring with SEAS.”

“I don’t really care.  It isn’t like I wanted to be the best of the new guardians.  But I do like the powers and they help explain the extremely stupid name.  Although I still don’t like the name.  Now, tell us what we have to do,” orders Fate.

“A simple answer for a simple question.  We will start your training in the arena.  I want all of you to go in there and wait for me to program the drones.  They are simple robots that are armed with guns, swords, and lasers.  Their attacks can’t kill any of you, but I doubt that any of you would like to feel the pain at this point in the training.  Just remember to fight back and try to get used to your enhanced physical abilities.  Here we go,” explains Solix.  He hits a red switch that locks the door to the arena and opens some holes in the floor.  About twenty robotic skeletons with weapons crawl out of the floor.

“Damn.  These things are armed to the teeth,” says Infinity as he dodges a punch to his head.  He hits the robot with a telekinetic blast that sends it flying into the far wall.  Nearby, Miracle and Hydrana are stuck in a circle of robots that are firing at them.  Both of the women twist and flip out of the way and occasionally one of the projectiles hits one of the robots.  Finally, Miracle leaps up to the thirty-foot ceiling and ricochets to the farthest corner of the arena.  Most of the robots follow her while five remain behind to keep shooting at the redheaded woman.  After ten minutes of shooting and dodging, one of the lasers passes through Hydrana’s shoulder.  The wound closes almost immediately, but it stops her long enough for the other lasers to riddle her body.

“This is getting boring.  Just go away, tin men,” says Hydrana as she is getting shot.  She stops in the middle of the circle and points her fingers at the robots.  High impact streams of water shoot out of the robots and destroy all that are in the way.

“They are doing better than I had anticipated.  I might have to increase the difficulty of the robots before our next class,” thinks Solix as he watches Fate pick up the sword of a robot he just ripped the head off.  Fate somersaults away from another robot and sweeps kicks the attacker.  While in midair, the robot’s body suddenly has an energy surge and the laser pack on its forearm explodes.

“How’s everyone else doing?”  asks Fate as he backfists a robot that was charging him from behind.  The impact leaves a fist shaped dent in the robot’s face.  The thing just falls backwards and starts to shoot sparks out of its head.

“I think everything is finished up here.  But they’re giving Steve, I mean Infinity, a little bit of a problem,” answers Miracle after she punches her hand through the last robot’s ribcage.  She pulls her hand out and the robot falls on its face, but its hand quickly grabs her by the ankle and yanks her off her feet.  Another robot that is nearby leaves the group that is beating Infinity in a corner and jumps onto Miracle.

“Get off of me!” yells the guardian.  The robot opens its mouth and bites into Miracle’s side.  It grows long claws from its fingertips, but it is knocked away by a pink gorilla that appears behind it.  One slash of its claws causes the gorilla to disappear.  When the robot turns around it sees a very angry Venus guardian walking over to it.

“Surrender or die,” orders the robot.  It sticks out its claws and attempts to slash at Miracle’s face.  Instead it misses her face completely and the red-faced guardian grabs both of its wrists.

“You bit me,” growls Miracle.  She snaps the hands off of the arms and kicks the robot right in the head.  It goes sailing through air and manages to catch a groove in the wall with its feet.  It stays there and a large laser cannon comes out of the top of its head.

“Surrender or die.”  The cannon is about to fire when a sword suddenly hits the nozzle of the cannon.  The sword sticks in and cause the energy to build up before it becomes too much for the weapon.  The robot explodes and flaming shrapnel goes flying around the arena.

“Bet that had to hurt.  You ok, Kelly?” asks Fate as he runs over to her.

“Nice shot.  And I’m fine.  But the name’s. . .”

“Excuse me, guys.  But does it really matter.  My boyfriend is currently stuck under a pile of deadly robots.  You can play Romeo and Juliet later.  Let’s go help me,” says Hydrana as she runs toward the moving pile of robots.

“I’m fine!” shouts Infinity from underneath the pile.  They can all see a bright white light appearing from beneath the robots.  Within seconds the whole area is filled with this light and it explodes.  The robots are turned into mounds of ash and there is only a ten-foot tall bird with blue and white feathers.

“O my god!  Is that you?” inquires Hydrana as she circles the large hawk that is standing where her boyfriend used to be.

“Yep.  This body seems very awkward.  It can’t figure out how to use the wings and there thoughts going through my head that I don’t understand.  Something about lightning blasts from eyes, but I don’t know how to do that.”  Slowly the robot’s remains disappear and the arena turns into a dense jungle.  Mist comes out of the ceiling and a small pool of water appears in the middle of the arena.

“What’s going on, Solix?” asks Miracle.  Behind her, Infinity slowly changes back into his human form.

“You four have shown that you are capable of fighting separately.  But now we shall see how all of you do against one opponent.  This will force you to act as a team and depend on each other for assistance,” explains Solix as he walks into the clearing that appears around them.  Tree stumps and boulders grow out of the ground in the clearing and the mist clears enough to see trees surrounding the area.

“Well, who is this one opponent?”  Solix hits Miracle right in the stomach with a quick punch and picks her up over his head.

“I am the opponent.”  Solix tosses Miracle into the pool of water and teleports out of the way of Hydrana’s water blast.  He appears behind Infinity and grabs the younger immortal by the neck.  Solix puts a chokehold on Infinity, but he is suddenly lifted into the air.

“Hold him there, birdboy.  I’ve got him in my sights!” shouts Hydrana from behind the other two immortals.  She charges up an ice blast in her hands and fires it at Solix.  The Sun guardian teleports out of the way and Infinity gets covered in ice.

“A warrior must be aware of what is going on around them.  And announcing one’s actions does not help during battle,” mentions Solix as he reappears next to Hydrana.  She throws a punch at him, which he catches.  He throws her over his shoulder and she hits Miracle who was trying to get out of the muddy water.

“This is a practice in teamwork.  And all I have seen are four amateurs trying to showoff with their new powers.”

“What do you expect, Solix?  You’re a lot better at all of this than we are.  We don’t even know how to fully control our powers.  Mine haven’t done anything for me,” argues Fate as he stands alone in the clearing.

“Here’s a thought, boy.  Try using them.”  Solix runs at Fate and does a roundhouse kick five feet away from the other guardian.  In mid-kick, Solix teleports in front of Fate and kicks the young man in the face.  The force sends Fate flying across the clearing into a thick tree, which is cracked in two.

“Now, I’m severely pissed off,” mutters Fate as he gets to his feet.  His eyes start to turn gold and bright as he moves toward the older immortal.  Solix makes another charge at Fate, but a root that he hadn’t known was there trips him.  As he falls, Fate runs at him and slides right into his face.  Solix feels his jaw snap and his vision is blurry for a few seconds.  But when he gets up, he sees a leg flying at him.  The jump kick slams Solix into a boulder and cracks his armor.

“End the program and unfreeze Infinity, SEAS.  Very good, Mars guardian.  But anger is not what should be used to win a battle.  All of you have failed this particular lesson.  But you have brought up a very good point, Fate.  We will not do this again until I am sure that you are ready.  I suggest that you all get some much needed sleep for we will be training for most of the next five days.  Follow me to your rooms,” says Solix as he gets up and leads them out of the arena.

The four young immortals leave the game room and follow Solix to their personal quarters.  All of the rooms are the same, except each room has different kinds of pictures and plants.  All four rooms have a computer monitor that can be used as either a TV or a communication linkup system.  There are huge walk-in closets and a floating cylinder-shaped chamber for their guardian uniforms.  The fancy beds take up a fourth of the room and the brilliant light comes from a hovering diamond near the ceiling.

“I hope you enjoy these accommodations.  We will start nice and early with the training tomorrow.  SEAS will wake you up for breakfast,” states Solix.  He walks down the hall and slowly teleports up to one of the higher levels.  The four new guardians are finally left alone in their rooms and their minds are still filled with several questions and problems.

“I hate this.  Solix made it sound like being a planet guardian was going to be fun and exciting.  I don’t want to do all this work.  It hurts,” remarks Hydrana as she opens up the mattress of her bed and starts putting water into it.  On her room’s monitor are Fate, Infinity, and Miracle who are exploring their own rooms.

“Don’t think of it as work, Hydrana.  Just consider it survival training,” replies Miracle as she looks through her closet and picks out a pair of white pants and a tight, black T-shirt to change into.

“Survival training?  What the hell do you mean by that, tomboy?”

“Simple.  If we don’t learn how to use our powers, we don’t survive.  Of course, we don’t know if Solix is telling the truth about those evil immortals.  For all we know, he might be the real bad guy.  That last exercise seemed very dangerous to use with beginners like us,” explains Fate.  He has already changed into a gray pair of sweatpants and a red shirt.

“Who cares if those guys are real or if we’re being tricked?  This is going to be a lot of fun once we learn what to do.  We’re all going to being galactic heroes,” mentions Infinity, who is juggling two stone statues with his telekinetic power.

“I don’t care.  We’re immortals, which means we can’t die of old age or be killed by anything.  Guess that blows your survival training excuse out of the water!” exclaims Hydrana as she finishes making her waterbed.

“Forget about it.  Let’s just get some sleep,” yawns Miracle.  She collapses onto the bed and immediately falls asleep.

One by one all of the computer screens turn off.  There is no sound for a couple of minutes until a loud crash is heard from Infinity’s room.

“Oops.  Sorry about that guys!  Do you have a broom, SEAS?” yells Infinity.

Hector’s Hotel Hoisting Hypermart: No Swinging On Display Chandeliers

Grand Budapest Hotel . . . Obviously

Welcome!  Watch your step as you come out of the narrow pass since there’s a cliff right over here. We had a railing, but it was knocked down by a visiting buffalo imitator convention.  They felt like they had to stampede in to make an entrance and things went downhill from there . . . literally.  I’m sure you wonder why our business works out of this large valley that is only accessible through this pass.  Well, we’re proud that all of our hotels, motels, and inns are organically grown.  You can see them from here, but we’ll start heading down the stairs for a closer look.  Now, what kind of structure are you looking for here?

If you’re looking for a country inn then we should go to our western region where the herd was last seen.  All of them come with cozy fireplaces in every room and your choice of wood or carpet flooring.  It depends on the area you plan on setting up shop.  You can make a variation throughout the building too.  Entryways are best with wood while bedrooms may be better with carpeting.  We do have a collection of dust devouring rugs that give off a faint smell of your choice.  Nothing so strong that it will upset customers, but they double as an air freshener along with removing about 90% of the dust in a single room.  Please keep in mind that we don’t supply much in furniture, but can take orders for our sister store.  It’s on top of a mountain, so it’s probably best that you shop from them here or online.

Let’s talk patios and balconies.  I know the second option isn’t really done for what you want, but you can have a small one set up for a second floor bridal suite.  True, it doesn’t really fit the country inn motif.  In that case, we’ll talk about our patios.  There is wraparound, front, back, sides, raised, sunken, haunted, canopied, jungle, rock garden, and the M.A. 6542.  What’s that?  It stands for the Moose Attractor 6542.  It looks like a normal patio, but it will attract moose even if you live in an area where they aren’t normally found.  We have a bison, rabbit, and red panda version as well.  There used to be a beaver variety, but we had some issues.  No, they didn’t eat the building.  The beavers would dam up the exits and trap everybody inside before somehow setting fire to the whole thing.  They had red eyes, horizontal fangs, and horns.  We assume that something in our design gave them rabies, but they always vanished before we could arrive.  I agree that wraparound patios are perfect.

Here’s a checklist if you want to make things easier.  Steeple roof, double pane windows, pond with the loyal duck promise, two sheds, an emergency outhouse, and a waterwheel for some power.  That’s pretty standard, so how about I make a suggestion to improve the inside?  We have a package that is a little pricey, but will improve the chance of your inn succeeding.  It’s simply putting a small kitchen in every room.  This is done in some places and you see how great they are.  Even better, these kitchens are fully stocked, which you don’t see that often.  I mean, everything you need to cook will be here without you having to supply it yourself.  Okay, we may have come into possession of a cargo plane’s worth of cooking supplies because of a clerical error.  Anyway, I think I see the herd through the trees.  Remember not to make any sudden movements and hold onto this rifle for when you pick your model.  Aim for the upper window where you see the silhouette of a woman playing a violin.

How to Use Colors in your Book Covers

This is a very useful guide. We don’t always consider the color of a cover. Usually get a picture in our head to match the story and go with it.

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

A couple of years ago, I posted an infographic on How Color Can Boost Your Book Sales. Today, I am sharing some tips on color connotations courtesy of Dan Matthews of Avasam. They will help you create the perfect book cover. Yes, I know we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover. But we all do, don’t we? A nice book cover will do wonders for your sales.

Some of the color connotations mentioned below will be obvious to you. Even so, keep them in mind for your next book cover, as color connotations have powerful implications for how readers will see your book.

Red color psychology

Since the color red is also linked with danger – such as in the case of poisonous berries in the wild – red definitely attracts attention. That’s why it is used for traffic lights, calls to action, or…

Teaser Tuesday: Putting on a Show #fantasy #adventure

Here is a fun excerpt from Legends of Windemere: Curse of the Dark Wind that might have a little bit of spoiler.  It’s part of a fight scene, so you get to see Sari in action.

Sari is caught off-guard when the chaos elves charge, her mind reeling from the ghost’s final word. The assassins are nearly upon the gypsy when the snow swirls and rises into a wave that pushes them back. Shaking her head clear, Sari darts to the side and hurls a dagger into an enemy’s chest. The others give chase as she uses the snow and ice to glide out of reach, the gypsy never straying very far from her helpless friend. Ducking under a wide slash of a cutlass, she slips her hand into a snowdrift and flicks her fingers. A lance of ice spirals out of the ground and impales the nearest assassin through the throat. Spinning around the falling body, she throws another dagger at a female chaos elf that is approaching Luke. The weapon hits the swordswoman in the head, dropping her at the base of a tree.

“Leave us alone!” Sari desperately screams, charging the nearest enemy.

The gypsy’s opponent parries her stiletto and strikes her in the head with his shield. He hesitates long enough for Sari to drive the hilt of her weapon into his groin. Feeling groggy and her vision swimming, she stumbles away from the collapsing chaos elf. She awkwardly dodges a hurled spear, the crude head grazing her side. The weaponless assassin rushes forward and leaps to tackle her to the ground. He feels his shoulder dislocate when he hits the immovable gypsy, so he attempts to roll away. Before the warrior can get to his feet, the snow around him turns into a toothy maw and swallows him whole.

“Nice spell,” a female chaos elf says, watching her companion cower from the effects of Sari’s illusion. With a muttered spell, a crackle of lightning dances between the woman’s gloved fingers. “Odd that you’re suddenly going non-lethal after killing three of my friends. Are you already weakened?”

“Heat of the moment has worn off,” the champion answers as she circles the caster. “I’m only going to kill the ones that go after Luke. So it’s best that all of you focus on me if you want to survive this.”

“That’s very kind of you, but you’re the one we’ve been sent after. The warrior is not really our concern.”

“It doesn’t mean we won’t kill him,” General Vile announces. The halfling is kneeling next to Luke with a blood-dripping shortsword held back for an easy killing blow. “Drop your weapon and turn on your special power. Stephen wishes for you to suffer before you die.”

“Don’t torture the girl,” the other caster argues. She bravely approaches Vile, leaning forward to whisper. “You told us she didn’t have to suffer. We should simply kill her and leave because the others could return soon. Besides, my queen has a soft spot for this girl and I would hate to be involved in something that upsets her.”

General Vile sighs and lets his sword arm fall to his side, his eye turning to the nervous gypsy. With a swift flick of his wrist, the halfling’s shortsword slices through the chaos elf’s neck. The Eblem poison works quickly and blood gushes from the wound, the woman’s choking gurgles making some spurt out of her mouth. He moves to the other side of Luke to avoid the pooling mess and aims his shortsword at the slumbering half-elf again.

“Do as I say or the same thing may happen to your friend,” Vile says, his voice cold and steady. “I’ve no idea how the Eblem blood will react to the living curse. It could turn him into a monster or grant him an agonizing death. I suggest you not push me to find out.”

“Okay,” Sari replies in defeat. Her body grows a thick layer of frost, but she stops when the halfling clears his throat. “What? You wanted me to use my powers.”

“Not the naiad abilities,” he states with a cruel grin. He beckons to one of the remaining chaos elves, who nervously walks into the open. “You can prevent yourself from being moved, but you still feel pain. Turn that on and let me find out how much you can take. I promise this will be brief.”

“I’m really getting tired of you people torturing me,” the gypsy mutters, snapping her fingers to give a show of her immovability turning on.

General Vile points his finger at the anxious chaos elf warrior, who draws his longsword and takes careful aim. He strikes her arm with the flat side of his blade, which quivers from the impact. The warrior beats on Sari’s limbs and sides while she patiently waits for Vile to call for the painful assault to stop. At the halfling’s request, the warrior attempts a few stabs to her shoulders and knees. The tip pushes in enough to draw blood, but the weapon is shoved out of the wounds by an invisible force. Feeling brave and hoping to end the display, her tormentor slams the hilt of his sword into her forehead. With a surge of anger, Sari draws her stiletto and stabs the chaos elf in the stomach. Both collapse to the ground, but only the gypsy is able to drag herself to her hands and knees.

“I prefer to be quick, but Stephen wanted a show,” the halfling soldier says as he approaches Sari. He kicks her in the head when he gets close, knocking her onto her back. “Now you’re truly defenseless.”

The One-Time Use Power

Back when I wrote my topic list, I had a bunch of examples for what I’m talking about here, but I forgot them.  Sorry about that.  I did remember one that really brings the general idea to the forefront.  Couldn’t find a video though, so let me example:

In the original ‘Teen Titans’ cartoon, one of the heroes fights the big villain at the end of the season and his body is badly damaged.  Don’t worry because he’s a cyborg . . . named Cyborg.  Not the point.  He’s unable to move until he suddenly realizes the reason the psychic villain can’t control him isn’t because of the tech, but his human will.  So, he suddenly repairs himself by absorbing the surrounding evil, full robot copies of himself and saves the day.  When asked if he’s got new powers, he states that he’s pretty sure it was a one time thing.  In other words, this incredible regeneration ability appeared and will never return.

This is a common trick in stories where the character stumbles onto a power, skill, or tool that is exactly what they need.  It might not be what they use right away, but it comes in handy at a climactic moment.  Once it’s used, the ability or tool disappears.  Sometimes there’s an explanation like it’s a potion or certain environmental factors allowed it to occur this once.  There are also stories where it’s used . . . and nobody ever mentions what happened again.  That guy just unloaded a massive energy wave that turned every zombie into a harmless Go-Go Dancer?  Let’s not talk about such things because then it might have to happen again.

Don’t get me wrong though.  It isn’t always a bad thing and you can make it work if it fits the character.  Being a natural evolution or addition to their already established set of abilities means it’s a possibility.  They could simply not have any idea how to do it again or decide it’s too dangerous.  Again, we find that a reason really should be given.  These are great set pieces to create that ‘awesome’ moment, but some authors tend to forget that things happen afterwards.  Only way to avoid it is if you do this at the finale and never return to the characters.  Totally fair, but it is a shame if there ends up being more that you can tell.

Kind of related is something with video games too.  Ever see a character do something killer attacks in a cut scene or they’re insanely difficult when you fight against them?  Then, you get to use them and they aren’t able to do anything of the things that you either saw or had trouble with.  It’s a major inconsistency and I’m starting to see it in movies recently.  That exhilarating scene in the trailer might not be in the movie, which can be very disappointing.  Sadly, I think many people do focus so much on flash and one-upping the previous big move that they forget to reuse things or carry them over when the situation changes.

So, what do you think about one-time use powers?  Have any examples?

Mini-Reviews of a Bunch of Anime

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been watching a lot of anime.  Some of it I have mentioned like Fairy TailNaruto, and My Hero Academia.  I’ve been watching these series with my son.  They’re fairly big ones too.  By myself, I have tried out a few obscure and smaller ones.  At least, I’d never heard of them before except for one that I don’t think I’ll review.  That one is fairly adult and I went looking out of curiosity because I’d seen so many people say that there was a good story beneath the nudity and sexual innuendos . . . It was okay, but the adult stuff really overshadowed what could have been a fun story.  Oh well.

By the way, I did run into a strange pattern of most of these shows being labeled MA because there was adult themes.  I read the descriptions, which were more adventure and fantasy.  Next thing I know, there’s nudity and harems turning up.  That or nearly every female character was endowed to ridiculous proportions.  Always was that one girl with a small bust too.  Thankfully, most of these spent more time with the story, which overshadowed the adult part.  Still, I know many will have an opinion there, so much of what I’m going to talk about isn’t for them.

Blood Lad

I grabbed this one because it was only 10 episodes long and it mentioned vampires.  The main character ended up have the first name of Charlie, but whatever.  Basically, he is a vampire who runs one of the areas of the Demon World.  A human girl turns up in his territory and he’s attracted to her . . . blood.  Unfortunately, she gets eaten and turned into a ghost before he can do it.  So, he swears that he will bring her back to life . . . in order to have her as a snack.  I liked this series because it had colorful characters that you got a feel for even within the short run time.  Don’t think there will be a second season considering it’s from 2013 though.  Oh, and Charlie is obsessed with manga, especially Dragonball Z.

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

Another one that I grabbed randomly on Hulu.  After getting really bored with Overlord, I was avoiding this one.  It’s another story where a person from Earth gets pulled into a video game to become their avatar.  Diablo is summoned to the world by two girls who try to enslave him as one does with summons.  The spell backfires and they get bound to him through collars, but he doesn’t order them around at all.  Only to be nice to each other because he doesn’t see them as property.  He still publicly claims they are because the guy is playing into his character of Diablo the Demon Lord who is the strongest character around.  This is similar to Overlord where very few things are a threat, but Diablo has two big differences that hooked.  One is that he seems to have genuine trouble with some of the fights.  The other is that his true personality is that of a severe introvert, so his inner voice is constantly freaking out when in public.  He says the wrong things at time and gets visibly awkward.  There was a lot of sex-based stuff (no actual acts or full nudity shown) that I didn’t expect.  It got really silly at times, but the story and main character were enough to get me through the 12 episodes.

Chivalry of a Failed Knight

It’s a world where some people are able to summon weapons and they become warriors known as Blazers.  He is considered the ‘Worst One’ because he has no magic and only a simple strength enhancing ability.  She is a princess with incredible power.  They are made roommates, he walks in on her changing, they duel, and he shows that he is stronger the rating system would lead you to believe.  Big warning here is that he has a little sister that wants to sleep with him, which nearly made me quit.  Her transgender best friend kept me going because it was really nicely done in my opinion.  They make mention of Alice’s identity and then she’s treated like every other character.  Now, the story is divided into a few sections through the 12 episodes.  The romance between the two leads is fairly fast-paced and took more screen time than I expected.  Thought it would be all about the battles, but most of those were really fast.  I can only think of 5 fights that took up most of an episode.  The rest were a minute or two.  The payoff for sticking with this series was also the dark twist near the end.  The male lead’s past comes back with a vengeance and it was fairly brutal.  Not a bad one that I would like to see a sequel to.

Arifureta

This is one that I just finished and it’s another ‘people from Earth being taken to another world’.  This time, a class of kids is summoned to be holy warriors.  Don’t worry.  We don’t really follow that path.  The main character is weak, but tries to help in the big dungeon, but they’re attacked.  During the escape, he is betrayed by a teammate and sent falling to the bottom of the monster-infested labyrinth.  He finds holy water to keep himself alive and eats the monsters to become stronger.  Always makes friends with a vampire girl who he falls in love with . . . I think.  The main character was nice and kind at first, but then he snaps when struggling to survive.  Not crazy, but he goes cold.  All he wants is to return to Earth and doesn’t care about fighting for the gods.  Anyone in his way is an enemy and he’s able to use his original transmutation abilities to create guns, a jeep, a motorcycle, and a vast array of magi-tech items too.  There were times I thought he was too cruel and callous, but that’s because of my own nature.  The writing of a hero who doesn’t give two shits about anyone outside of his circle and being cold-hearted was really good.  Yes, there is the harem side of things and sexual stuff.  I will say that I was happy to see the female lead was the fairly normal proportioned one this time.  Supposed to be a second season of this at some point and I am looking forward to it.  The monster CGI was a little weird and off-putting at times.

Cells at Work

This one isn’t sexual at all.  I watched it all two weeks ago to see if it would work for my son because it’s oddly educational.  Yes, there is a lot of blood when the neutrophils (white blood cells) kill germs and bacteria.  It’s cartoonish levels at times and it doesn’t take away from the story.  Every episode involves a new threat to the body like influenza (episode 3), abrasions (episode 2), and a cancer one.  Here’s the real catch.  None of the characters are named beyond their role.  Red Blood Cell, White Blood Cell, Killer T Cell, Macrophage, and the rest only use their roles as identities.  The narrator and their actions explain their purpose in the body.  Every disease, injury, and effect that is used gets a narrative that tells the audience what is going on.  I read that it’s so good that some colleges put the series on the syllabus for Pre-Med.  My son is enjoying it so far.  A lot isn’t sticking in his head, but he’s getting some of it.

And that’s what I’ve got so far.  Don’t know how many anime fans I have following this blog.  Many aren’t into the stuff that I’m describing too.  Now to figure out what I should watch next.  I only have Netflix and Hulu to work with.  Guess we’ll see what’s on the list.

A Week of Work, Holidays, Birthdays, and Limited Exposure

Another week of schoolwork and housework.  Look, I’ve got very little else going on here since New York is such a mess.  Things were a little easier since our spring break was supposed to start on Thursday and we have holidays.  Next week was said to be a simple week with more fun stuff than strict work.  We’ll see what happens because I think it really depends on teacher.  Many are trying to cut back the workload to give the kids and parents time to focus while others are continuing to barrel forward.  My son has been lucky in that he has been flooded to the point where we can’t do anything fun.  We still get to play time around mid-afternoon, which helps him relax.  That’s what life is now.

Last weekend, I attempted to challenge the stores to get a few things.  I need to figure out a better way to do it.  Liquor store has been the only place I’ve gone to where I don’t feel like I’m going to be infected.  Target had a line because they’re letting a limited amount of people in at a time.  Problem here is that the line goes pretty far and nobody is staying away from each other.  May have begun that way, but people always begin to crowd when patience wears thin.  So, I didn’t even try there.  Ended up at Walmart, which had more than I expected.  Still, there were a lot of people without masks and the aisles are too narrow to always be 6 feet away from others.  That really wasn’t the worst.  Many times, I headed into an aisle and saw someone coughing all over without covering their mouth.  I just turned and got away, so whatever I needed in that area wasn’t grabbed.  Most times it ended up being the same elderly woman too.  In fact, I noticed a lot of elderly here aren’t doing anything to protect themselves.  It’s a little worrisome.  By the time I got home, I was stressed and rethinking my weekend shopping idea.  I might have to do it after I drop my son at his mom’s on Thursday.

I managed to get the first 2 chapters of War of Nytefall: Savagery done last weekend.  I’ve had too much going on Fridays to get anywhere, so it’s really just Saturday and Sunday where I can work.  Thursday is still outlining day since I’m coming down off the workload of the week.  I finished the setup for Do I Need to Use a Dragon? (Tips to Writing Fantasy) and came up with a possible title.  What do you think?  I might make every chapter/entry section a question too.  After all, I’m writing these like blog posts and those tended to be started by someone asking me a question.  I’m going to let it sit for a bit and tinker more this week at night.  My hope is to get 1.5 chapters of Savagery done since I didn’t get my usual time.  There was a lot going on this week.

Passover began and I’m not feeling it.  This is when Jews stop eating leavened (rising) bread, which means no pizza, pasta, cereals, pastries, etc.  It’s difficult enough to do this during normal times, but now we have bigger limitations with the pandemic.  Matzah gets boring really fast and dinners are lacking.  My lunches have usually been rices or soups that include pasta, which get me looks now.  I think I’ll break by Sunday and get pizza just for some sense of normalcy.  On Thursday, I really only had a few pieces of matzah before our cheat dinner for my birthday.  It was Red Robin burgers and an ice cream cake.  That’s not the point.  Before the food arrived, I began getting really dizzy and that kept going until I passed out.  Starting to wonder if I should press my luck this year because it was fairly scary.  Not sleeping well this week probably didn’t help, so I’m going to try to do better next week.

I finished the blog posts for June . . . I’ll start working on July topics when I feel like it.

Got a strange mini-review post for various anime I binged going up tomorrow.

Thinking I’m running to the end of this post.  Getting tired and wanting to curl up for a nap in a bit.  On Friday, I got back to an old project where I made the characters, but not the outline.  This is for the Sin series where I have 2 more core novels and 2 spin-offs to fit into the notebook.  I write these books in 4 Acts because the original concept was heavily influenced by Final Fantasy games that had multiple discs.  So, Sin gets involved in some really big and globe-spanning adventures.  It’s frustrating that I haven’t come up with a good series title and keep calling it ‘Sin’.  Think I made some suggestions to myself last Saturday, but nothing stuck.  Master of Ether or something along those lines may be on the right track.  It is difficult going back to this since it’s been a year.  My hope was to work on it last summer, but that never happened.  Stopped at a crucial point, so I’m relearning the whole thing.  Only thing saving my butt is that this is a rewrite of an older idea, so I have tons of notes to work with.

Goals of the week:

  1. Write a little more of Savagery
  2. Outline more of Song of the Conqueror
  3. Entry titles for Do I Need to Use a Dragon? (Tips to Writing Fantasy)
  4. Schoolwork for me and my son
  5. Fun time
  6. Sleep time
  7. Puzzle time
  8. Brave the outside world for shopping
  9. Okay.  Master of Ether isn’t sitting right.  Dang it.
  10. Watch more anime.

CHAPTER 10: Warehouse

4:53 a.m.

“I was panting too hard for that, wasn’t I?” I gasped. The red…
