What I Hope to Do This Week (Goals & Projections & Dreams)

He was proud of this

He was proud of this

Well, the first weekend of 2014 is leading into the first full week of 2014 and I’m really writing this sentence so I get used to writing 2014.  Huzzah!

Sad news first: I never got that haircut.  They were closed the day I tried to go and then the snowstorm made a mess of everything else.  Now it’s too cold to walk and I’m seeing my wild hair as something that keeps my head warm.  I should probably get it cut before we go to Buffalo in 2 weeks.  Yeah, I’ll be a rarity for a few days since I might only have Internet access in early morning and late evening.  I’ll have the tweets and posts scheduled as usual, but not sure how much blog wandering I’m going to do.  Probably very little.

I’m realizing that I have to accept that $2.99 books bound around the Amazon rankings like a hyperactive gazelle.  We’ll never get the full picture of how Amazon creates those numbers and they probably change every month or two.  All I know is that Allure of the Gypsies is still selling and I’ll keep pushing it.  That’s really all I can do.  Besides, I think by the 3rd book I’m only getting people that are either engrossed in the story or hate it to the point where they wish to continue torturing themselves.  Either way, I need to focus on the next book of the series and everything else.

One more note:  This week starts a new Tuesday segment where I analyze the themes of my characters and stories.  I mentioned this earlier since several surprise themes appeared while I was writing.  Maybe this will bring in a little insight to the characters as well.

Goals for the week!

  1. That haircut will be mine!
  2. Finish the first draft of Curse of the Dark Wind.  It’s a long shot that depends on weather, working today, and the success of #1.
  3. Get back on the exercise bike.  Aiming to start this tomorrow when it’s supposed to be a little warmer.  I hear the heat running in the house, but it’s just not reaching this room.  Maybe I should accept that the future holds winters of low activity and weight gain for me.  At least until I live in a house or place where it isn’t an icebox every morning.
  4. Set up posts for the following week.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?
  5. Begin planning stages for ‘War of the Tainted’.  The characters and plot outline for this series will be my project to give me a break before Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue is started.
  6. Plan a few simple dinners, which will probably be Penne with Homemade Vodka Sauce, Honey Chicken Sandwiches, and ordering pizza.

What’s everyone else aspiring (or conspiring) to this week?

Numbers In My Head

This must be revenge
For hating algebra
Claiming letters
Should not be found in math
Now I find numbers in my trade
Rankings and sales
Addicted to simple addition
Or discovering the key
To give these digits sense
Sell one to leap ahead
Sell four to take a dive
Standing still
When six have found new homes
It makes no sense
Yet I cannot look away
Expecting it to guide my path
And pat me on the back
Still a literary child
Who needs numerical assurance
That he is doing the right thing

This is a new goal for 2014:  Get to the point where I no longer care about the rankings and sales.

Fairy Tales

An excellent poem about fairy tales. Enjoy and read more of Pamela’s poetry.

Pamela Beckford's avatarPoetry by Pamela

Fairy tales and magic wands
Princes on majestic steeds
Evil step sisters with hair so blonde
Trolls and gnomes doing good deeds

Fluttering silver gilded wings
Fairies spinning flax into gold
Ball gowns and magic mirrors
Princesses with wishes to behold

Thoughts of happily ever afters
Awakened with the prince’s kisses
Now vanished are those dreams
I’m left with only near misses

Author Pitfalls: You Probably Fell Into Some of Them Already

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

The world of writing is a dense jungle full of poisonous creatures, carnivorous plants, sudden drops, and a stopwatch that changes speed every few seconds.  You may be calm and plan the initial idea, but chaos will appear for most of us at some point.  Those that don’t stumble are either lucky or living in a cabin beyond the reach of human contact.  If it’s the latter then how in the world do you get Wifi out there?

Every author will run into their own set of pitfalls and challenges.  So there are no identical paths, but there are a handful of common dangers that one can slip into without realizing it.  I’m not talking about rejection letters, negative reviews, or computer crashes that devour your work as you’re trying to upload to a thumb drive.  Those are beyond your full control.  Here are a few I thought of from my own experiences that I could have stopped if I had thought about it.

  1. Style Corrosion–  Also can be called ‘Style Overload’ or ‘Failed Mimicry’ or whatever else you  think of.  I’ve mentioned this before on my blog.  Many authors with low confidence or high exhaustion will see the suggestions of others as golden wisdom.  It really comes off this way if presented as a solid fact instead of an opinion.  A young author who is unsure of their style will absorb these suggestions.  At first, it isn’t that bad and you might see improvement.  Then you take on more advice and your style becomes either a cluttered mess or a carbon copy of an established author.  If this goes on for too long, it may take months or years to get back to the style that you’re really comfortable with.
  2. PERFECTION!–  I’ve seen so many authors fall to this ideal.  It results in a constant creation of drafts to the point where a decade will go by and no progress has been made.  It can connect to Style Overload as they adopt a new trick and rewrite the entire story.  There are also times a single typo can cause these authors to make a rewrite or scrap what they have.  It’s kind of scary.  Some of these trapped authors research agents, publishers, and other authors, so they adopt the idea that they’re experts in the field.  You’ll get suggestions on what you should do and they may be right, but these people lack the experience to go along with their own advice.  I know it sounds like I’m badmouthing this type of author, but you can learn something from them.  Maybe you can even convince them to take that scary first step too.
  3. The Universe Will Give Me Time–  I wasted a decade of my life on this one.  I truly believed that I would work my way through another job to the point where I could also do my writing.  Some people can pull this off, but you need the perfect situation for it.  I didn’t have that.  Instead, I found most of my jobs sucked my energy and I was barely able to maintain the house.  This deals a lot with the mentality you need to start writing and I needed to be calm.  Exhaustion led to bad writing.  So you really have to put your foot down and make time for your writing.
  4. Planning Loop–  Much like the writer toiling for a lifetime on the perfect manuscript, you have some authors who don’t even get that far.  They fall in love with the world and character creation, but fail to put it into book form.  It’s a safety zone because planning and creating without structure prevents full-blooded criticism.  You might be told how a few things don’t work, but it’s the comfy planning stage and nothing is written in stone.
  5. Quest for Pure Originality– We’d all love to make a story that is unconnected to anything that has come before it.  Sadly, all of your basic stories have been done and readers can be really creative when it comes to connecting new to old.  An author who is obsessed with originality may scrap all of their good ideas because one aspect has been done.  I’ve met a few of these authors who are at the point where they’ve given up and spend their time turning on others.  They become bitter and angry about their ‘failure’, so they lash out.  I would consider this the most dangerous pitfall because it can be incredibly toxic and hard to break.
  6. Smug Competitor– At every level, you’ll find authors who are so confident that they refuse to accept advice.  This isn’t the bad part though because some people simply don’t see a marketing plan of one person working for them.  This pitfall becomes a problem when the author makes a scene about negative reviews and tries to sabotage fellow authors who are doing better.  It’s this type of author that can do a lot of damage to the overall community. Thankfully, they’re rarer than we believe.

What Do You Think About Pre-Existing Character Connections?

I’ll say it now to get it out of the way:  ‘Luke, I am your father! Let us be the standard of this overused tradition!’  Best if you imagine Darth Vader saying that.  Still, the surprise parent thing happens a lot.  Gets really weird when you read a story where a mother is surprised that someone is their child.  If anything, I would think a mother would be the parent to remember such an event.

Let me define what I mean.  There are two types of connections you can have between characters.  At least for the sake of this post.  One is the story-developed ones that occur within the confines of the story.  For example, two characters have a child in a series or they go through the same traumatic event.  The other is a pre-existing connection that was around prior to the story beginning.  This is useful more in later books of a series or later chapters of a book.  The uses for this are that new characters can be integrated into the group with more ease or there is a thicker plot between hero and villain.

I do find it interesting when there is a connection between characters and not just blood relations.  You can have former students, former friends, neighbors, and a ton of threads to weave.  I’ve been thinking about this lately ever since I realized one of my heroes shares an unexpected thread with one of the villains.  I’m playing with it and it makes sense that strings are being pulled a lot more.  That’s for my story, but it can still be handy outside of a series where destiny vs free will is a subplot.  In fact, I tend to prefer a connection beyond ‘me villain, you hero, we fight’.

You tend to find character connections in a lot of what you read.  Trying to find a non-spoiler example that isn’t in my line of sight is tough.  Anyway, it might not even be between heroes and villains.  One of the connections in my series is that Nyx and Sari were childhood friends for a year or so.  It’s a bridge that helps me fit Sari into the group dynamic and can bring some of young Nyx into the older one.  Their former relationship continuing as adults will be a catalyst for change.  It doesn’t even have to be this solid.  Two characters can bond over learning from the same teacher or enjoying the same beer.

So, what do you think of characters having a history together?  Do you enjoy it?  Is it cliche?  Do you use it yourself?

It also appeared to depict an angel with a rather large sword dressed as a Jester but then, the less said about that the better…for now at least.

There was also an intriguing Pietà, depicting the effect of blasphemy upon the ‘body’ of Christ. The various blasphemers are shown coveting the parts of the Christ’s body which their calumnies have torn asunder… Needless to say there are fourteen such miscreants and if the Doom in some respects reminds us of the Egyptian ‘weighing of the heart’, then this scene cannot but remind us of the dismembered Osiris…

Interesting, when one considers that at the time these walls were painted, to all intents and purposes nobody was supposed to have heard of either the weighing of the heart or the dismemberment of Osiris…
